Customer Reviews

Disappointed... Extra screws? Disappointed. The lamp would not extend forward (without modification). What I mean is, the lower springs you see in the product's pictures (nearest the base) are purely decorative. The lamp only allows movement at the "middle" joint to allow the lamp head to move up and down. Of course, there is also a joint near the lamp head that allows movement there. Unfortunately, I thought the lamp could "reach" forward. It could not. Also, it does not pivot. If you want it to pivot, you must pivot the entire base. I thought this was a good deal for what I expected it to do. Because it would not perform as expected, it isn't worth the price for me. However, I was able to get the lamp to "reach" forward by removing two "extra" screws that prevented movement. The lamp seems to be working as I expected now. I will upgrade my rating to three stars. I probably voided a warranty or something. :( 3Cheaply made, incomplete assembly instructions. Cheaply made, not worth $35. You have to assemble it yourself, but there are no instructions, only a drawing of the lamp on a sheet of paper.Nowhere does it tell you that 2 screws must be removed from the lower section for the lamp to flex freely. If you do buy this lamp on sale like I did, you must remove 2 screws, I will attach a picture of the section that has 4 screws and where 2 of them must be removed. If you are not an engineer you will probably never find out. I hope this helps. 2I also needed something that could be moved around easy and was bright This is a review of the Globe Eletric 35 Heavy Base Architect Spring Balanced Swim Arm Desk Lamp.(This review is based on the desk weight mount version and not the clamped light.)Measures 6.8 x 14 x 28 and uses an E26 bulb. (Not the candelabra small socket light bulbs. No bulb is included with this.)Summary With my particular desk setup, I need a light that is much higher than normal to provide light where I need it while working. I also needed something that could be moved around easy and was bright. Lots of led lights were available, however, the height of the lights did not work and the led light was not bright enough. I am using this combined with a 23 watt CFL which is equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent. (Light socket is rated at 60watts. If you are using CFL bulbs, this should never be an issue.)In terms of durability, this is going to your basic standard quality light. The base is a nice weight and is heavy enough to ensure the base does not move when the light is being adjusted. The body is metal, however, the plastic ring to hold the lamp shade is an abs plastic. If you need something heavy duty or heavy elegant, you would not be happy with this.I have a 5 tall CFL inside and only the very lowest part of the bulb is exposed by . Note - y bulb is a 23 watt CFL and if your bulb is 4 1/2 or shorter, it would not extend more than the light shroud. The heat from the bulb I am using is not very much and you would have even less heat using lower wattage CFL bulbs.Having the power switch on top of the light is also a plus as it is close to where you can access it. Many lights have the switch on the power cord or base of the light which is not always convenient.Price seems on par for a light of this quality.ConsOne big issue I had with this light is the base came with extra bolts that had to be removed to allow it to function correctly. There is no reference to this in the description, had no documentation regarding this need and to this day I have no clue as to why they have them installed. If you compare the actual light to the light in the photo, the part in which the extra bolts are is different. (The listing should be showing exact item you will receive.)Only another thing which I wish was better was the rotary power knob on top. While it works, it is cheap feeling and not very durable feeling as it wobbles some when I turn it. Hoping this does not break with continued use.Based on significant bolt issue photo not being of the exact item I received and based on the wobbly rotary switch, I need to give this rating 2 stars. Lots of potential here for higher ratings but some attention is needed to quality check (bolts) and the listing photos. 2Pretty good with a few quirks. Okay, not to be a pessimist but I'm going to start with the negatives.1) Swivel is extremely limited after inserting base screw and you have to lift up the arm part a bit to get the screw in which makes it feel like it's not all the way down sitting firmly on the base, it just doesn't feel fully stable or functional at the piece where the base plate meets the arm. It doesn't greatly detract from the lamp if you're not planning to swivel it though.2) The lamp head is pretty loose even after tightening the screw quite a bit...it holds its place well enough but still droops a few mm's when I let go. I'm afraid to keep tightening as I don't want to break it. Not the biggest deal if you don't plan on adjusting the head a lot.3) When it came it had 2 (seemingly unnecessary) screws in the bottom hinge for some reason, this completely prevented the bottom hinge from moving at all, essentially stripping it's ability to 'swing', which kind of defeats the purpose of the lamp. After removing these two screws you gain the ability to swing the bottom hinge, restoring functionality, as long as you don't tilt it too forward or else it falls over. Not really a fault of the lamp, you can only expect it to go so far forward before physics takes over and tips it. But, yea, why the hell are those screws there? What am I missing?http://imgur.com/rjk3C2nAs you can see if you leave the one screw in it's right in the path of any movement, and the other screw actually goes right into one of the bars.Positives:1) Value of the lamp, it's quite tall and pretty nice looking for 20$.2) Looks nice and functions well enough and feels pretty solid, none of the negatives were really game changing, more like little annoyances.Neutral;1) Kind of wish it came with both a base plate and a desk clamp, I don't imagine that would add much to the price and would be nice to have. Not faulting the product at all for this though given its price. So yea, I'm rating this 4/5. Would consider lowering the rating if any of the negatives mentioned become a serious problem in the future, although that doesn't seem too likely. 4Assembly and Modifications Required (base model) Right to the point - two screws (out of four) at the bottom of the arm that attaches to the base must be removed with a phillips head screwdriver before it will articulate. One side has four screws exposed, the other has three screws exposed. On the side with four exposed and counting counterclockwise from the top, remove screws 2 and 3. Now the bottom arm will articulate. It's odd that these screws are present because the bottom arm is obviously meant to articulate. The springs and joints are fully operational and the base is heavy enough to stabilize the lamp in most positions. But nowhere in the included instructions does it explain this. These two screws are "locking" screws and in no way add to the structural integrity of the arm. It's also interesting to note that in the provided photographs of this lamp the two screws are not only absent but also the screw holes are absent. Perhaps they were added as an afterthought for safety - positioning the arms in an extreme fashion and also using an incandescent A19 bulb might cause the lamp to fall and start a fire? Maybe, but if you are like me and live life recklessly and on the edge, remove the two screws so the lamp arms actually work. There are a couple of other steps in assembling the lamp also, contrary to the claim on the product page. But once the two screws are removed and the lamp assembled, it is a very good value. Any A19 bulb will work, including the LED variety. The lampshade also rotates so that the lamp can point horizontally. The base is very heavy, so the bottom arm can be completely vertical and the top arm extending at a 45 degree angle without risk of the lamp falling over. If the bottom arm is completely vertical and the top arm is at a 90 degree angle, the lamp would be at risk of falling forward, especially with a heavier bulb.So remove the two strange screws from the bottom arm and enjoy this lamp. 4Not as Described: Bottom spring-arm might as well be a fixed solid rod. Aside from the cheap quality of the metal throughout, this lamp may work for you if you don't need much reach. It is pointed in the wrong direction--the bottom arm swings away from you and is rigidly fixed, unable to move at all. Other reviewers tell you to remove the screw that prevents the lower rods from rotating, but the manufacturer has reinforced the screw with a fixed rod that immobilizes the lower arm--its springs are decorative only; they will not move at all. This is obviously done by the lawyers to protect against lawsuits because the lamp tipped over and set something on fire or damaged something with its heat.I bought this because the switch from my old lamp finally wore out after 15 years. After seeing how cheaply made and unlike the deliberately misleading ad it was, 34 inch easy adjustable multi-spring balanced arm allows complete flexibility I returned it. I went to Lowe's, spent $3.50 on a new switch, soldered it in place, and all is well. See photo below of my old lamp to illustrate how this type of spring-loaded desk lamp flexes at both the top and the bottom when properly made and anchored with a large heavy base.JULY 11, 2016: Per customer service suggestion I am resubmitting photo. 2Good light. Needs slight modification to fully articulate. Minus a star because the lower joint does not move. See photo. In retrospect it should have been pretty clear that it does not move based on close examination of the pictures. But then why the springs on the lower joint? If all 3 joints were articulating then this would be a solid 5 stars. All in all this is not a bad light, especially for the price. Still, I'd like to find one just like it that is fully articulating.EDIT: Feb 2018 Up to 5 stars. After reading several reviews of this light on other websites, I discovered that others had gotten the lower joint to move simply by removing two screws. See photo.I suspect the manufacturer added these locking screws as a design "improvement" after several reports of the lamp tipping over. The new LED bulbs are much heavier that the old filament bulbs, and the lamp will tip over with even a modest movement of the lower arm. If you do remove the locking screws, test the lamp stability by giving it the wiggle test (push it slightly and see if the tendency is to return or tip over). 5Ok lamp but NOT fully articulated and NOT really an architect lamp. UPDATE: I was looking further back in the reviews and found the one where someone advised to remove two of the screws at the base of the lamp arm to make the lamp articulate on the bottom hinge. And it worked! Why those two screws are there, I have no idea, but once removed - it moves on both hinges. Very strange design. I still had the box and checked again for instructions that said to do something like that...nope. Still leaving at 3 stars - you shouldn't have to get advice from a stranger and partially disassemble your lamp to make it work correctly. It's okay for the price but it's not fully articulated like most lamps of this type (and the lamp that I replaced this one with). The top hinge moves but the bottom hinge does not - it's fixed. I tried to move it and it looks like from the way it's built that it can't - there's no hinge. Which is strange because why have the springs there if it doesn't move? I guess it's for show? So, really, you can only move the lamp up and down and adjust the shade angle but you can't extend the reach of the lamp beyond how it comes from the factory. Limits its usefulness. So it looks like an architect lamp but it isn't really an architect lamp - which has the full articulation. Otherwise decent quality, attractive design for the shade and the base is sturdy - reason for the 3 stars - but I'll be replacing it sooner rather than later. 3Returned I'm returning this lamp. The lower half of the arm will not move unless two screws are removed from the bottom bracket. Screw removal leaves two open holes with circular scratch marks around them. I do not understand why the lower half of the arm is immobilized by these two screws.Lamps of this general design are normally free to rotate while in the base. This lamp has a thumb screw that prevents the swing arm and bulb/shade assembly from rotating. The base must be rotated to rotate the upper sections. I'm just guessing, but I believe the sheet-metal peg at the bottom of the swing arm and bulb/shade assembly that is inserted into the base is so flimsy that it might collapse after a few rotations. The attached photo shows the two screws that prevent lower arm movement. They are the screws with the Phillips heads showing. 1CAUTION: Lamp with base does not have operational lower folding arms! The lamps I bought were the ones with the metal base. However, the lamps were modified so the lower arms will not fold out. You can only adjust the top arms for height. The bottom arms for horizontal motion will not fold out. I needed this so I removed the screws that held the lower arms fixed. It became obvious why the screws were added. The base is not heavy enough to keep the lamp from falling over if the bottom arms are moved very far. The portion of the lamp with the bulb may only be moved about 1 foot past the center of the base before becoming top heavy and falling over. If you buy a lamp with folding arms, you expect them to fold! There should be a disclaimer in the description about not having functional folding lower arms. To get the full use of the lamp I will have to either add weight to the bottom of the lamp, or clamp it down by some method. 1
