Customer Reviews

A very effective way to greatly improve the function of ... A very effective way to greatly improve the function of the ubiquitous flashlight. Combined with the long shelf-life of alkaline batteries, it means that your flashlights will always work when you need them. If you use a flashlight regularly, the savings in battery costs will more than pay for the LED. One caveat: LEDs are polarity sensitive, so be sure that your flashlight connects the positive battery pole to the center connector of the LED. Most do, but flashlights powered by the older 6 volt lantern battery often do not and require a little rewiring. 5To upgrade or buy a whole new light? If you're wondering like I was whether to upgrade with a product like this, or buy a whole new Maglite, here's a comparison of the original Maglite 3D (incandescent bulb), a Maglite 3D with this product (Nite Ize LED Upgrade Bulb C/D High Power), and finally Maglite's own LED 3D flashlight (LED bulb as stock). This comparison was done with a new pack of D cell batteries for all flashlights. Note that due to my lack of photography skills, the difference in brightness doesn't really come through in the photos I've uploaded, so you'll have to trust my assessment below which also included ceiling bounce tests (shine the light at a white ceiling and assess the overall brightness of the room). The original incandescent vs. the Nite Ize High Power LED Upgrade: I would estimate that the LED upgrade is about 50% brighter than the original incandescent. As is obvious from the photos, it's also significantly whiter and clearer than the incandescent.Nite Ize High Power LED Upgrade vs. Maglite LED 3D: The stock Maglite LED light is about 50% brighter than the Nite Ize LED. Worth noting, and rather obvious from the photos, is that the stock Maglite LED not only has a larger and brighter spot, but also a nice bright flood even when the spot is highly focused as it is in the photos - so bright it actually overpowers any flood light from the other two lights. So, does it make more sense to upgrade an old Maglite, or buy a new LED one?First off, if brightness is what you want, it must be noted that these days you can get equivalent or greater brightness from even single AA LED flashlights - and with many of them, variable brightness levels, so you can go from very dim for close-up tasks, to blinding bright for distance viewing. If you need extra long-run times, I guess the Maglites are still a good option, but I think the real advantage is that a 3 or 4 D cell flashlight can also make a decent club, and I assume that's why you're interested in having one (though I'd still recommend a good pocketable AA LED light as well). If you already have an old Maglite and you're thinking of an upgrade, the problem with the Nite Ize LED is that it's not significantly cheaper than the sale price of the Maglite LED 3D and, additionally, not as bright. I think the price of these Nite Ize upgrade LEDs should be more in the 5 to 7 dollar range. $5 would make it a no-brainer. As it is, though, if you're going to spend the current asking price, you should first ask what the condition is of the old Maglite you're upgrading (i.e. is the lens all scratched up?) and whether it wouldn't be worth it to spend $10-$15 more for a new Maglite with LED, which will be brighter and better than an old Maglite with this upgrade.Either way, you should definitely move on from those incandescent bulbs. The brightness and durability of a *good* LED flashlight is a world of difference from old incandescent ones. 4Fantastic LED light upgrade bulb! I have an old Army "L" shaped flashlight I've had for nearly 30 years. I occasionally use it, but the regular bulb wasn't bright enough, plus it kept flickering from low to medium beam, but never too bright. Someone recommended this upgrade LED bulb, so I decided to give it a go. When I first installed it, it didn't turn on at all. After removing the bulb, and inspecting the bronze contact inside the flashlight, I noticed it had tarnished and turn partly black, with a few corrosion spots. I removed it, and cleaned it with white cider vinegar and steel wool. I wiped it dry, reinstalled the LED bulb, and it worked!! It is very bright and throws farther than the regular bulbs. I am very happy with my purchase!! I imagine this bulb would work in any other flashlight as well. 5Great Upgade for my 2 Cell Maglight Flashlight. Used this bulb to upgrade my old 2 cell Mag light flashlight just before Hurricane Irma hit Florida. It was easy to install and bulb works great. It is several times brighter then the old one. We lost power for 7 days and this was my go to flashlight. I never had to change the batteries due to the LED low power usage. The only issue I have noted is there is a black spot in the center of the light beam when you un-focus the beam to increase the beam area. I prefer to beam more focused so this is not an issue from me. 5Didn't work for me. It came as a recommended upgrade for my Hitachi flashlight. It emitted a very narrow "spotlight" beam for 2 minutes and then died. I requested a refund and decided to stick with the original incandescent bulb. This LED is not compatible with the reflectors designed for incandescent bulbs, dispersing too little reflected light to be useful. 1Revived a old 4 D cell Maglite. Like new!!! Excellent light bulb. I put this in an older mag light that I had a standard style bulb in that was casting the older style yellow light. I put this new bulb in the mag light and the difference was amazing. It was like a brand-new flashlight. And the beam goes 10-15 feet farther now and wider!!!And this was on an old Maglite that I was going to throw away.Especially since the newer technology that I have is so much more advanced. I use a L.e.d. stream light that is rechargeable and it has a awesome light blue beam.So I figured I might as well try and see if I can salvage this old mag light and put it on the kitchen fridge. Not only am I now putting this old mag light in my truck but I am looking for any of my other old mag lights to salvage by ordering this LED replacement bulb. The difference is amazing. This is an excellent product. 5Works Well If It Works I had upgraded a couple of Maglights with a similar product and decided to turn my attention to a few older, cheaper flashlights in my house including a couple of antiques I had laying around. It was pretty amazing to see a flashlight that was probably manufactured in the 1960s kicking out a bright, clean, white light compared to the pale yellow it used to emit with it's old incandescent bulb.Even a couple of old $5 flashlights that I had bought at Target years ago had new life breathed into them by these upgrades. I was impressed! They didn't work with all of them, though. Something about the connections just didn't work well with these bulbs and caused them to flicker on then go out again. Not what you would want happening in an emergency.Overall, though, these work great! (When they work) 4So far so good i used this after Hacking my six volt lantern type flashlight to swap the polarity of the bulb contacts. The LED must have center contact positive, but the square six volt batteries have the center contact negative. Tungsten bulbs don't care. Depending on the brand of lantern flashlight, this kind of hack can be Quite difficult, so if you are planning on it, figure out how you are going to do it ( without shorting out the battery ) before you buy the bulb. That said, I now have a very bright, very long lasting 6 volt flashlight. If you are using a normal c or d cell flashlight, this will work with no changes required. I'm going to be retrofitting all our flashlights now. 5Solid Upgrade It's a very bright LED that should last a long time. It does protrude a bit further than the previous incandescent bulb did in my 2D Fulton flashlight. Due to being slightly further forward, the light produced is not ideal, since it does not light the reflector 100%, so beyond 3 or 4 feet, a dark spot in the center appears. Besides that, it's infinitely brighter than the old bulb, and I look forward to using this much more than prior (I shied away from using the old one due to the light output being so weak).I have added a picture of the new LED inside the reflector of the light, where you can see it protrudes more than a typical LED would past the reflector (I will have to try to modify that later), and a picture of the dark spot inside the beam from about 8 feet away. 4A Great Upgrade.. But Be Warned About Polarity This is an excellent upgrade for that old flashlight you have sitting a drawer. I have an old Rayovac 2 D cell rubber coated flashlight with a tilting head that I just love to use. The problem was that the yellow incandescent light just kept getting dim too quickly. I've used LED's before so I knew this would be a good upgrade. When I first put it in the flashlight, nothing happened. I was ready to return it. I then remembered what I had learned from installing LED bulbs in my camper. Some LED's Are polarized and work with the electricity flowing only one way. Fortunately, all I had to do was put the batteries in the reverse direction and it worked wonderfully. For other style lights, the fix may not be that easy. You may have to switch wires. 5
