    Junk!This thing is pure crap. First, and most importantly, the pin that fits into the base is just pressure fitted and will start to turn very quickly. Since this pin supports the rest of the assembly the whole unit becomes wobbly. You not only want something that will hold the items you want to solder, but you want it to hold them still, this unit will not do that. Secondly, the thumb screws are not well machined and the threads are burred. You have to fight the burrs on the screw threads when you are attempting to tighten the unit in place.For a few dollars more than the cost of this unit, you can build your own custom helping hands. Go to YouTube and search for "DIY Helping Hands". And of course you can find most of the material you will need for the project here on Amazon ;) .1Not worth the money. Piece of junk!The product does not fulfill any purpose or task. Poor materials and the assembly is absolutely shoddy. The alligator clips are not securely held in place do not hold even small parts. One clip broke altogether the first time I tried to use the device. Found a better version of this type of tool online. Made sure to choose one in which the alligator clips are solidly held but still easy to loosen and re-position. Note in the photo that the alligator clip is merely crimped onto the small stud meant to rotate in the clamp. This is a definite weak spot. On my sample the clip would spin rendering it useless to hold something steady. It couldn't even be soldered because the metal was plated and the solder wouldn't adhere,The cast iron base on my sample is uneven and rocks on the bench top. Can't even use it as a satisfactory paperweight.Don't waste time and money with this item. I am not even going to bother sending out back for a replacement.1Thumb screw broke immediately Within one minute of unboxing and setting up, one of the thumb screws broke. The quality of this item is extremely poor. The thumb screws either don't budge or they are too loose and if you put any pressure on them, they break. Wing nut or not, the screw is still the same with the thumb tab.Additionally, the base on mine has debris in the iron mold. Maybe wood chips or something else. Basically it's a cosmetic imperfection, but it's worth reporting since it shows sloppy manufacturing for the product in addition to the low quality materials.I didn't expect much for this low price, and it's only for a short run crafting project - I just need something to hold charms up while I paint them. Thankfully it's the slide for the magnifier, which I did not intend on using for this project so I was removing it. I can still use it for my immediate project so I gave 2 stars instead of 1. 1NOT AS SHOWN! Buyer beware - this unit does ...NOT AS SHOWN! Buyer beware - this unit does NOT have thumb screw locks on the alligator clips, it is the cheap crimped on clips that have kept getting loose on previous versions I have used. I bought this specifically to resolve that problem. Clips are loose, rotate under the weight of a wire and fall off after several uses.1Helping Hands is an understatement!Opened this and immediately jumped into soldering. Setup was just unfolding the parts and tightening them. Went from in the box to working in a matter of minutes. Small enough to fit with my wires and other tools for small jobs. Makes a world of difference to have this item, even though I didn't find myself using the magnifying glass. Feels like quality material, not afraid of it falling apart on me. If you feel like you need more than 2 hands to hold wires and solder, get this!5GREAT little tool! Love it for securing circuitry and soldering. Holds pretty much anything exactly where and how you need it, for as long as you need it to. The magnifier is large enough to be useful but the base of the whole thing is a little small if your supporting anything of any weight. I would most definitely add some weight to the base when you get this or add to the footprint to make it sturdier. All in all however I love using this for small detail work and to hold odd parts I am going to solder or glue or whatever. It will adjust and bend into almost any shape and then lock in place. 5Great Value, but If You're an Expert, Will Probably Want Something MoreThe base is really heavy for how big it is, which is good. There are a lot of adjustment points, so you should be able to get your item where you need it. I would say I didn't use the magnifying glass, so I'm not sure how good that is, but it's nice that it is optional.This product is really small, so depending on what/where you are trying to things, you might have better or worse results. I was soldering wires in my car from the radio, and I had to balance it on a bunch of stuff as the center console was too low for it to rest on itself and still reach up to the radio wires. For little figures on a desk though, it should be fine. It definitely did act as an extra pair of "helping hands" for my use. And who knows, if you're confined to a small area, the size may actually be a benefit.I will say, you're definitely gonna wrap the alligator clips in something (I used a combination of elastic medical bandaging, and heat shrimp tubing), otherwise they might damage whatever they're holding.All in all I'd say the best thing about this is the value. it's very affordable, so it's worth it if you're only gonna use it once or twice. If you're a hardcore hobbyist, though, I'd probably invest in something better.3Fantastic Holder This thing is great.-The base is metal and is heavy, so no toppling or sturdiness issues.-It comes already assembled and ready-to-use-It's easily adjustible to hold things close together or far apart.-The alligator clips are very strong. (They were actually a bit too strong for the wires I was soldering, but that was easily solved by wrapping some tape around the clips' teeth--a much better problem to have than weak clips)-I didn't need the magnifying glass, so it was easy to uninstallGreat value! 5Good for small projectsIt is okay, but not great. It will get the job done for simple/small tasks like soldering. Adjustments are difficult, and this device is not large enough for medium to large sized objects. If you only need to work on small PCBs and tiny parts, this will work. Larger projects will require a larger base (I have found that small vices work).- base is cast potmetal, not as sturdy as it could be, had to file it to sit flat- joints do not always hold position- alligator clips are weak at the swivel and could bend/break, also bite into components.- joints require pliers to create enough tension to hold position+ low cost, comes fully assembled+ magnifier is removable+ adjustable to most angles (though not always easy)I ended up removing the magnifier and replacing it with a 4in Tasco magnifier, as it used the same screw to mount it, and it is world's better. The focal angles of the stock magnifier are just too small.The alligator clips were a bit wobbly, so I melted a decent amount of solder into the joint where it is crimped on, and the clips are much sturdier now.3Took a lot of fiddling to get the thing to ...Took a lot of fiddling to get the thing to actually tighten up and stay where I put it for the clips. The metal loop holding the magnifying glass was very poorly constructed in how it connects to it's ball joint. It was impossible to tighten up due to the weak stamped sheet metal and flopped all over the place. I ended up having to inject it full of epoxy to get it to set in place and it works okay as a result. So; it DOES work but can be a little frustrating to deal with. I'm seeking other options for a replacement.3Not as shown in picture. Replaced by cheaper version.Does not come as shown. I bought this unit specifically for the little adjustable pieces that hold on the clips. The unit that I received is not like the picture and just has flimsy little crimp on clips. Same problem as another 1 star reviewer. Unit is not as shown, is very flimsy, and is hard to tighten. I will be returning it.UPDATE: It looks like Amazon or the seller has updated the picture of the clamps. This unit has the crimp on clamps.1Super helpful! butThis has been nothing but helpful for working on electronics I can't believe I ever soldered without one.Now the but, the metal claws are not protected and I ended up scratching a board pretty badly it still works but if you have large enough heat-shrink I recommend throwing some on the claws (the softest you have)OR buy purpose built rubber protectors(I tried heat-shrink and it worked for me)but other than that VERY helpful!5Base should be mounted before use on small boards or wires.I purchased as a low budget option. Would work in a pinch, would not suggest if soldering on a regular basis or larger boards.Base is too small ,will fall over ,unless attached to work surface with screws or clamps.Limited mobility of clip arms, makes it awkward to get a board held where needed.Magnifying glass pointless unless the board is 3 inches or less.Wing nuts sometimes loosen during use.If the arms and base were extended ,I think this would be a useful low budget option.Otherwise spend 40+ for a helping hand or build one.4
