    Reliable and top-notch tester.These Milwaukee are the only testers I buy for my electrical contracting business. When labeling breakers, the guys spread out throughout the customer's home and I flip breakers, until one says "Stop" on the walkie-talkie. They describe what went out and I label the breaker.Cheap, unreliable testers waste time, going off and on. Not to mention that an unreliable tester may be the death of someone.With this tester, you push the button, the forward light comes on (very handy!) and you know your tester is on. We always check on a known, live plug first to make sure it is reading voltage. This is standard practice with any tester. This Milwaukee tester gives us peace of mind, as we test water pipes and gas lines, too, to help prevent being shocked under a home.Forget the home-handyman testers at the big-box stores and get a real Milwaukee tester!5This Tool Won Me Over-Excellent Replacement for My Old Reliables1-28-20I'm reviewing the Milwaukee 2202-20 Voltage Detector with LED. This is used by not piercing the wires, or non contact. You would use this on the outside of Romex or insulated wires, but you can also stick the tip in an outlet to check for voltage.... meaning it must be over 50v to be detected, I think.I LOVE this thing. It's so easy to use. I never thought the LED part was necessary but honestly, I've grown to like that feature. I wanted to get a more modern non-contact tester, as the older ones I have are somewhat falling apart. I have different versions of Greenlee(?), 2 of the same model which is solely for higher voltages (at least 110v), and 1 of a different model whichcan do both lower and high voltages. I intend to post images of those when I get a chance.So my older ones have no working issues, they are accurate. My issue is the model I have 2 of is technically "always on". It has a pen like clip (like for pockets) and this clip must be squeezed into the body for it to be on, and use the tool as you would any other. It beeps/chirps and has a flashing red LED. To shut off, just release the squeeze off the clip, then there's a shield that slides to prevent the clip from contact on the body. Here in lies my issue. That shield is falling apart on the one, and missing on the other, so if traveling in my pocket, I can accidentally run down the batteries.The other style older tool has a side toggle switch, actually a slide. Its settings are OFF, Lo, & Hi. My issues with this tool, is 1. that it's getting too easy to slide the switch on, so again, if traveling in my pocket, it can also accidentally be switched on. Easier than I'd like. 2. The sound can be quite faint on this tool... and it sounds more like a radar detector to best describe along with a flashing green LED. The sound and LED increase with intensity depending on how close you are to the live wire or how high the voltage is. Then there's issue 3. which applies to all 3 of those older tools. The battery size. They all take the tab like batteries, each takes 2 and I think they're a pain to change. They're the smaller L47? I'd like to say, so this now leads me to why I like the Milwaukee.The Milwaukee... I like the ease of use. You can have with or without sound, depending on how long you hold the power button for. The power button, I truly like this design. It's a push button on the end, and it takes "some" push to be able to activate the button. I've had zero issues with keeping this guy in my pocket. It's never turned on while in there, plus when 1st turning it on, there's a definitive audible beep. Unless leaning into the pocket the right way, there's no way to accidentally turn this on. However, if I ever find I need to replace the batteries.... this unit takes 2 AAAs! You can find those anywhere. In the local convenient store even, if you find yourself in a bind on a job. How AWESOME is that?! Easier to replace as well, IMO.Now I've only had this tool about 2 months now, and I don't do electrical work everyday, so for me up until now, I've found it reliable and accurate. I've used it to trace Romex cables, check power to receptacles & switches, extension cords (but you have to follow the twist to have a constant detectection -which I'm OK with. Shows how sensitive this is or not) and I think I've used it on MC -but maybe it was just on the stripped back ends. I'll test that and report back. 110v -120v. The tool feels good in the hand too. I'm not thrilled that it was made in China, but so far I'm happy with this purchase.I know when I searched for a replacement, I went through quite a few brands mostly the well known ones... Fluke, Southwire, Greenlee?, Klein... and the reviews, quality, and costs were all over the board, so I purchased 2 other brands along with this one. This Milwaukee is the clear winner for me. I may do a comparison video on them,as I've kept them all, so you can decide and see for yourself. I've come across sellers with variances in their items, including knockoffs, even if listed as same brand. I'll post an update with a durability review.***UPDATE*** 2-21-20So I want to answer some questions (my own mainly) as to how sensitive the item is. I did test it on live MC conduit and it was not able to detect it through the metal. I find this to be a perfect sensitivity... such as in an extension cord or Romex type of cables, you must be right up against the side that is hot, touching the cable as you go down the line to be as close as you can to the hot leg. If I'm on the neutral side, my unit will not alert. I like that.As I've been doing more jobs, I find the LED super useful! I'm truly extremely happy with this purchase. I will update again as more time passes.5Broke after first useThis is a truly horrible product. I stuck it in a socket. It worked. Said socket was fine. Went to pull it from socket, the sliding cover came off (the battery case), but it seemed fine. Put the case back on. It stopped working. Replaced the battery, still doesn't work. Was difficult to use in even for the first use. If you don't have small hands, you might not be able to press this button (it is recessed to flush with the case).1Product as described. Worked right away. Better than the (different brand) device I had. It's hard to give a comprehensive review since I recently received the product. I can say that it was received ready for use with batteries installed and, although it comes with instructions, it is very intuitive and simple to use. It gives an audible signal on a powered wire and gave no false positives. I had to be careful about false positives with my previous device. I can't comment on durability or useful lifetime, but I see no reason it will not last a long time and continue to give me good service over that time. I could not be more satisfied and thus give a 5 star rating. 5No one has made the perfect tester yet !Pros it has a light on the tip that helps, it s accurate.Cons doesn t sense lower voltage around 12 or 24 volts for control voltage.I have to a klein one that senses lower control voltage , also haas a inferred temp sensor that is pretty accurate for use in the HVAC quick testing, the con : it don t have a light on the tip .No one has made the perfect quick electrical tester yet.Three things are needed fire the perfect tester. 1 high and control voltage sensing, 2 inferred temp sensing, 3 light on the tip.2Excellent Voltage TesterI have four different non contact voltage testers including a Fluke 1AC and 2 different Klein models(NCVT-2 & NCVT-3). They all work reasonably well but this is my favorite. The reason is that this one is a little smaller, has a fairly loud alert and a bright LED. It also seems to be very accurate and good in crowded boxes. The LED is very helpful in dimly lit environments. I highly recommend this one.5I am an electrician Here is the deal OK? I have gone through several NC testers over the years. None last very long with heavy use. But the tool is so valuable for my job, that I have to buy a replacement whenever one breaks down. Here is my experience.Greenlee - the worst. I went through 3 of these and will never buy another again.Klein - sucks too. I have gone through 3 of these as well, they last longer than greenlee, but break down all the same. The red and green light is great, and operation seems smoother, but who cares if it breaks after 6 months?Milwaukee - The best so far. I have gone through about 3 of these as well. They last the longest between these three brands, but they still die after nearly a year of heavy use. The alert sound is louder and the LED light blows the competition out of the water. It is ideal for looking in the boxes, attics, and other dark environments electrical wiring dwells and where the tester will primarily be used.Final tip: If you plan to use this on the job, buy it from home depot and keep the receipt. If it fails within 3 months, return it for a brand new one at any home depot. It also has a 2 or 3 year warranty from the manufacture, which I have not tried using yet. And find a gentle place to store it. My tool bags are most likely the culprit of damage to these delicate electronic sensors. They should last quite a bit longer if stored in a protected location. 4I never felt so unsure about a ticker working when it doesn't go off on contact with 120v.I like that it may pick up voltage. Dislike the fact it goes on and off constantly at different intervals when against a hot wire. I used fluke meters and tickers for the past 10 years and I never felt so unsure of a cable being hot or not with this. I literally push it against a hot wire and it is a 50/50 on going off. Clearly you don't want to get this ticker angry. Literally pressed the ticker up against the 120v wire and it goes off when in firm contact with the wire.2Great features, necessary tool to have but has sensitivity issues. Helpful but not the fastest or most reliable.First let me say that it looks great and isn't too annoying with its beeping either. It also has a well-placed LED light to help you see what you're doing.I bought this to use on 3 different projects. Installing a light fixture, replacing a power outlet, and swapping a garbage disposal for a new one.In each project, I tested this tool to see if it would reliably detect "hot" wires to see if I could trust it. I'm honestly not 100% sure about it.Sometimes it will randomly beep and detect something that isn't even there, when not even close to a wire. This would make me wonder what happened because the power should be off and it just beeped while no where near anything. Then I would recheck everything and it was quiet.LED light on this is great, you can use it as a flashlight while looking around for the wires so it really helps in that respect. I often wear a headlamp while working in darker areas but didn't need to use it as much with this tool at my fingertips.With the power outlet installed and power ON. Placing the probe INTO the socket, it would usually not beep... **EDIT/UPDATE: After comparing it with the Klein version I learned that the probe on the milwaukee is a bit "fatter" or wider than the Klein, so it doesn't go into a socket as easily as the Klein version does. You have to jam it in a bit and then it beeps every time!Conclusion: Great looking and feeling tool, but it had a lot of false negatives (update: figured out a lot were caused by probe being wider and needing more force to jam into a socket) and false positives during my testing. I would like to try a different brand and see how it compares. **edit/update: The false positives aren't that bad and are usually just single random beeps so once you're used to using it, its easy to tell.FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm not an electrician or handyman, I am just a home owner who purchased this product to help me not get shocked during some simple projects around the house.4Works good until it doesn't These don't seem to last long. Worked great until it broke. Shouldn't be used by an inexperienced person. All these voltage detectors can giv false readings. You need to know when it's possible that it's lying. It can pick up static or stray voltage to indicate the power is on. Also sometimes it can not indicate voltage. Every brand I've used does this. I still use them for a quick check. But I always test with a real tester before working on the circuit 5Awesome Flashlight that detects voltage. May offend gangs.There are many low voltage tester is in high voltage testers on the market today I relatively low prices. I have tried several of them on the very low end cost want us to the upper high-end cost ones but my preference is Milwaukee for two reasons. First reason is but it matches my beautiful Milwaukee drill and toolset it drives the Crips absolutely crazy so I do my best to stay out of any gang affiliated zones so that I don t upset the ecosystem of gang rivalry And live to write another review. The second Reason is not because of the low voltage sensor because they all can do that but really because of the bright shiny light that it has that allows him to see inside of boxes and switch boxes and so forth. The light is small and doesn t protrude off the sides and doesn t get in the way at all and is about as bright as the light on an iPhone 8 and higher. I don t recommend it to be used on the scope of a weapon or as a tool to shine in the eyes of a suspect during an investigation but for electrical it s fantastic.5but this Milwaukee detector is the best by farI am a professional contractor and often have to disconnect outlets and switches during the process of a remodel. 20 years ago I was shocked after an electrician told me the circuit was off and I have not been without a voltage detector in my tool belt since. I have had 3 Greenlee and one Southwire, but this Milwaukee detector is the best by far. I just used this one for 3 days straight wiring 3 bathrooms and I love it. The LED light at the tip is really helpful as I can see inside of outlet boxes. If I were to give it any negative is the tool turns itself off after 5 minutes. Not really a problem, but startles the heck out of me when I am holding it in my mouth using it as a flashlight and the audible alarm goes off to let me know it is shutting down. I highly recommend this tool.5... one definitely stands out as being one of the best. The LED flashlight is a really nice additionI've used multiple NCVT's and this one definitely stands out as being one of the best. The LED flashlight is a really nice addition, as far as accuracy goes, I've had zero false positives in the 3 years I've been using it(I've had to replace it each year though). Battery life seems as long or longer than similar products which don't even have an LED flashlight. Now with all that said there is one reoccurring issue that prevents me from giving this tester a 5 star rating. That problem is the Testers's power button. Not only does it sometimes become a nuisance due to the duration you must hold it for it to come on and to turn it off but the quality of the plastic used seems to be very poor. Literally one drop from a 6ft or higher ladder and if this tester hits the ground with the button making contact first, then you're going to be looking for another tester. The button will either be destroyed or it will get depressed into the tester in such a way that it makes turning it on and off consistently and accurately almost impossible. To try and remedy the problem you will have to remove the tester's cover and try to bend the square plastic button back to its original position, but due to the poor quality of the plastic you risk either ruining the button entirely by breaking it off or you'll just ruin the plastics original flexibility creating more issues with turning the tester on and off.But like I said other than that one issue this really is a great tester and if you're more careful than I, you probably wont ever run into this issue. I work as an electrician full time so chances are my tools are going to take a fall off a ladder here and there and I know this tool wont stand that test.4
