Customer Reviews

Good American Standard Replacement The instructions on the back of the packaging only include the easiest part - connecting seat to toilet. It does not show which hinge goes where. My old hinge was corroded and fell apart. So I could not figure out which piece went where. There is a short and long hinge. A simple diagram on back of package would be best. Also, manufacturer couldn't do a one minute video? Its not rocket science but please save me time and frustration! 4These hinges were the answer to corporate apathy. No thanks to American Standard for making a non-standard product. These fit my American Standard "Antiquity" PERFECTLY. They appear to be an exact replacment in terms of size and alignment. This product was a really good answer to a problem created by American "Standard". Despite the implication of the name, A.S. made this particular product FAR from standard. When the hinge on my seat broke, I attempted to simply replace the entire seat with parts from the local big box stores. Neither the elongated seat nor the round seat options fit the, now out of production, "Antiquity", high dollar, one-piece toilet made by American "Standard". When I contacted them, A.S. did not offer the slitest assistance or any attempt to reconcile the problem they created by making an odd sized bowl/seat combination and then offering no parts support. They did not even suggest that replacement hinges and bumper pads may be available. Thanks to some detailed pictures and information on Amazon, I decided to gamble on making these work. It turned out to be a good decision -- no modification required -- everything lined up perfectly. The only reason I gave this product 4 stars rather than 5 is that the plastic these hinges are made if feels much more flimsy than the original. However, for less than $10 dollars I would have no problem replacing them with this set again when needed. 4Good hinge at a good price with a few caveats So I bought this hinge as a replacement for the Jabsco 29098-2000 for my boat. It does work, but it is not a direct replacement, it takes a little longer to install and you end up with one of the old screw holes being visible under the seat cover.Another potential issue is that the supplied screws are not stainless, probably not a huge deal and maybe you can use the old ones. And one more thing: Due to the design of these hinges, if for some reason one hinge comes loose or comes off, the other hinge can slide off and the whole seat cover will come off. With the Jabsco part, this would not happen. BTW: I am not associated with Jabsco. If you really want to save time, buy a whole new seat with hinges already installed, it is only about $7 more than a set of hinges and it should take all of 3 minutes to install. 4Seat Repair Although there was a slight difference in the height of these replacement hinges, they did the trick. The seat I used them on ison an American Standard toilet and replacement hinges are no longer available from the manufacturer. Saved a bunch overthe cost of a new seat. The hole centers on the top and bottom hinge pieces were exactly the same as the originals. 4Its hard to get excited about toilet hinges, but I shouted with joy when this product worked! We are having a 4th of July party, and as I was cleaning the toilet which guests will be using, the toilet seat hinges broke, and I was thinking, what will I do, buy a whole new toilet seat locally? I went on line to Amazon and did a search for toilet parts for an "American standard" toilet (which is the one that broke, and this product came up. It didn't claim to fit an American standard toilet, on that it had parts. I thought for the price, and the urgency of the matter, that I would buy it and try it out. It arrived today, and after about 15 minutes, I had the problem solved. Thank you Master Plumber and Thank you Amazon.com 5Only a temporary solution In short, they work. I used them to replace the rusty screws and nuts on the toilet. However, they are flimsy. The toilet seat can still move under some pressure. The build quality of these screws and hinges is not very good. If you need to extend the use of your current toilet seat for a few months, then buying them makes sense. For longer time period, you need a new toilet seat or better hinge. 3Fit American Standard Champion 4 Toilet - but see update, a part is different This product works on an American Standard Champion 4 toilet seat -- the seat that comes with the unit. Except for the color: this is white, my unit is Bone or Linen. I looked fairly hard to find similar hardware in bone, linen, off-white, but could not find hinges except for white or chrome.. I have some spay paint in the correct color, which will work on plastic it says, so will try it. These hinge parts appear to be identical to the ones used on the original AS toilet, EXCEPT: these have quite a lot of 'mold' marks from the manufacturing process; the original AS ones are smooth. Even the screw holes match. Since I plan to paint mine to match I intend to carefully remove the mold marks with fine sandpaper. I wouldn't say that the quality of these 'match' the AS ones, but of course, one broke after a few years anyway. Easy enough to remove and replace-- again.Update: I didn't look hard enough. The part that broke on mine is the 'bottom' part of the hinge, that is mounted on the bottom of the seat. The part(s) in this package DO MATCH this part, (Except for color). However, the part of the hinge that fits to the toilet seat LID is not the same. The screw holes match, but the 'arm' that fits into the roller part of the hinge is 1/2 inch longer than the original. Using this part would 'push' the front of the lid past the front of the seat by 3/8 or 1/2 an inch. Wouldn't look that great.I didn't notice this at first, since the part on mine that was broken is the bottom part. Upon further inspection I note that the other side on the bottom of the seat is also cracked and ready to fail. I will use the 2 bottom hinge parts from this product, but retain the rest of the original hardware. 2Toilet hinge replacement Replaced hinge parts on an American Standard toilet (1.6 gpt) elongated lid. I only needed to use the hinges since they were completely compatible with the existing bolt and nut hardware. The white color didn't match exactly with the slightly off-white color of the seat, but looked fine. Just removed the screws to remove broken hinge and reinstalled the new ones. Screw holes lined up exactly. Easy job. Also installed LASCO 02-3307 replacement bumpers. They also fit the holes but were about 1/4 inch thicker. Had to replace both, but they work fine. Color is white. Just pry off the old ones and push in the new ones. 5Missing Part and a Wrong Part as well! Missing Part and then a wrong part as well. Poor quality control. This might have worked just fine, but couldn't even send the right part for the other hinge to be installed. Noted this before I even started assembly. You need to get a better supplier because it is quite obvious they don't care about doing their job correctly, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to place all parts in the container, and maybe just a little bit more intelligence to put the correct parts in the package. Give me a break!!! Will not buy from this party again. 1WILL NOT PROPERLY FIT A KOHLER TOILET OR SEAT Before I get into this I would like to state that this Hinge replacement part will not properly fit a Kohler Toilet that uses a genuine Kohler Toilet seat. Honestly, this was not worth my time to make this work, I should have just bought a new seat. Anyway, if you have already purchased this part and need it to fit a Kohler toilet please read on, I have listed the mods required to at least make it fit.I recently had on of the hinges crack on my Kohler Toilet seat. After checking around and finding a replacement seat would be over $30.00 I thought why should I spend for a new seat when only the hinge was broke. Not only that but the current seat was like new. I could surely find a replacement hinge for much less and I came across the Master Plumber 479-56 and according to the reviews some have used on a Kohler toilet. While it is true it does fit, it doesn't fit properly and won't hold up especially if you like to use your toilet as a seat with the lid down. Here's why, First take a look at my first picture, you will see the new lid hinge has a greater angle of lift. This will cause the rear of the lid to be lifted higher then it should without any support. The weight of a person setting on the lid to only be supported by the hinge itself. This will cause the plastic hinge to crack or the screws to be ripped out of the lid (see the last picture).Next, see picture 2. The attachment hardware, IE hinge, securing bolts and nut. The black nut retainer is Kohler, the 2 white nuts are part of the replacement kit with the rightmost one that had to be modified fit the Kohler bowl. The genuine Kohler part fits into the bowl base and centers itself and the hinge as it tightens. The replacement parts as they come won't fit into the hole. Some would say turn the nut over, well you could but then the hinge itself along with the attached seat move all over the place. Also, you can't use the old nut from Kohler because the threads on the replacement bolts are different. The solution is to take the replacement nut (again see picture 2, center part) and grind a bevel on the nut. This allows the nut to center and gives you a flat spot on each side of the nut to hold with pliers to get tight. Also use the largest blade screw driver you can find to fit the bolts. Otherwise you won't be able to get them tight enough.I imagine this hinge works correctly on other Toilets and seats and for that it probably deserves more stars. The box it comes in does say "Fits most Toilets" this may be true but again I say, IT DOESN'T FIT A KOHLER. 2
