Perfect EDC light This flashlight offers a well balanced performance between size, price, and quality. For less than $30 you get an exceptionally bright light in a durable, water resistant shell. I first purchased one of these years ago in Walmart; that light survived drops, dunks, being run over, weather, etc. The only reason I decided to purchase another was that I read that Maglite upgraded their LED technologies, therefor making an already bright light even brighter. The new LED offers execlent throw and flood capabilities. I can easily see about 80 yards away on the high setting and about 50-60 yards on the low setting. I must admit that I don t use the strobe too often, but it is blinding and would be excellent for tactical applications. If you re in the market for an affordable light that packs a punch, then buy this one. 5A nice well balanced flashlight, that is well made I have a lot of different types, brands, and styles of flashlights, and I think I like this one the best.The body of it is made out of all aluminum. There are gaskets and seals at all openings, so you can even use this in the rain, and not have to worry about water getting in, and shorting it out, or ruining it. The handle is ribbed for texture, so you have extra grip and do not have to worry about it sliding out of your hand while using it. The black, or whatever color you get, coating on the outside of it is pretty durable too. It does not scrape, rub, or wear off easily.The beam on this is a fixed beam though. Meaning it is stuck on a pinpoint type of beam. Unlike some other models, and types, you can not adjust the beam on this at all. It does have some radiant light though. I would say, in all the lights that I have used, I would say the radius of the radiant light, is about down the middle is how far the light spread is outside of the pinpoint beam.This flashlight was not designed to be used as a lantern type, but if you take the lens assembly off, you can use it like one. Or, if for some reason you need a wide angle beam up close, you can take the lens assembly off and use it that way too. But if you do, you will loose the long range or pinpoint beam for distance.The light turns on and off very easily by a simple click of the button on the bottom (opposite end of where the light comes out) of the flashlight. To switch between the settings, just click it multiple times, all at once, or in a row. 1 click, high beam, 2 click, low powered beam, etc. This is one place where I love this one. I have the XL100 or XL150 version too.. That one, I think to switch between the settings is a pain in the ...... That one, looks almost exactly the same as this, XL50 one, and really, the biggest difference between the 2 is the button and how it works to change settings. I highly recommend this on to the 100 series version.The assembly that holds the 3 AAA batteries is very easy to remove, and reinstall. The batteries are very easy to replace in it too. The quality of the battery housing is pretty much all plastic, but is very well made.As with all maglite flashlights, this one is made here, in the USA too.While this does come with 3 batteries in the case, if you are not planning on using it for a while, I suggest leaving the batteries out of it until you need it. The reason, One of these, I put the batteries in that it came with, and it sat there for a few months not being used (I guess I should say that I had 5 of the XL series ones so you can not use them all at the same time), and then when I went to use it, I found that the batteries started to corrode and leak. While this is not the fault of mag, better to be safe. Another option would be to get some good rechargeable that hold their power over a time. For example, I buy the Enloop batteries for mine. They are rechargeable's, so I know I can use them over and over, but more then that, they do not have the tendency to leak like the disposables do, and this particular brand will keep most of their power for years, even when not being used. Standard NiMh batteries loose 1% of their power per day, 30 days, 30%, 3 months, dead batteries.. Not bad if you use it day after day, but if you put it up for an emergency, and use disposables and they leak, then it will do you no good, or if you put it up and use standard NiMh batteries months later, they will be dead. There are other ones like that out there, so just think about what you are using in it. Remember, this flashlights may have a warranty, but it does not cover battery leakage damage.In durability, I have dropped mine, bumped them and knocked them down, etc dozens of times, on everything from carpeting, to hardwood floors, to concrete and blacktop, and I have never had any of mine fail from this. Scratch, gouge the surface, yes, but fail to perform, no.As with any flashlight, they all have different designs, styles, and uses, and have different things that they are best for. So just take into consideration what you want to use it for, as to what is best for you. Personally, I love the button on the bottom for turning it on and off. Just know, this flashlight is about 1" in diameter.In brightness, I feel that this is a good mid range light. Meaning, it is plenty bright for normal use, but also, is not over bright either. The beam will go hundreds of feet. But as with any flashlight, going brighter also usually means sacrificing battery life. This one has good battery life, but also, is plenty bright for most people. So in the end, I really have no complaints about this one. 5Great flashlight recommended it's a great flashlight very bright and useful in the house in the car for an outdoor sports, The 200 lm version it's a great option for outdoor, battery life runs up to six hours on high, and 36 hours on low, for me it's a great flashlight for the money you spent, very useful you just need three AAA batteries and that's it, FYI The LED code is 19 for the 200 lm version 5The right light Definitely one of the best palm-sized LED flashlights I've had the pleasure of using. Pre-purchase i wasn't excited about the multiple 'modes' of operation but now that it's in-hand I can tell that Maglite did their homework. Instead of cycling modes one at a time, the user selects a mode at power-up and the next press of the control button powers down the lamp. After so many torches with compulsory switches between lamp, LASER, beacon, flashing and/or S.O.S. it's real nice to be back to light on, light off simplicity.The grip and water-resistance are nice but I do miss the ability to put the torch on a lanyard. 4Mag is back in the game I LOVE this flashlight. I (and my family growing up) had been Mag Lite fans for a long time. Back in the '90s they made just about the most dependable flashlights in their price range. But after LEDs became mainstream, Mag seemed to lag behind. Eventually, I bought myself a Surefire (also an excellent flashlight and U.S. made, so no regrets there). But more recently I wanted a flashlight that took easy-to-get standard batteries instead of the 123 3-volt batteries, and I eventually decided to give Mag a second chance. This XL50 is awesome. It takes 3 AAAs and has hi and lo modes. This is my favorite feature, because for some close-up work (think reading a map or whatever) 200 lumens is way beyond what's needed or even comfortable. The lo mode (toggled by double-clicking the switch) is 20% power, which makes this light super versatile. The beam is clean, adjustable (as we expect from Mag) and BRIGHT. I mean, wow. Gone are the days of a huge 3 D-cell weapon. This thing fits in your pocket. Great for backpacking. Glad to see Mag is catching up again instead of sitting on their laurels. It still features the typical Mag details like the serial number, aluminum casing, and o-ring seals (just no spare bulb in the cap, because, well, with an LED you just don't need one). 5A convenient little maglite I got this light for around the house, camping, and general use for when I am traveling from Maine back to Tennessee to have in my car in case of an issue at night.I love it, it is small, convenient, and very bright. If you have never had a Maglite before you need to know that they make QUALITY products that resist the test of time. If you have had a Maglite before it performs like the big ones but in pocket size!I bought the Tactical Pack and I love it. If you are camping or outside at night you can put the red filter on and not mess with your night vision. The blue and green filters are nice too even though I doubt I would use them that much. Great pieces but I could see how they could possibly be lost easily if you aren't careful. 5XL50 Now = 200 Lumens Maglite XL50 LED 3-Cell AAA Flashlight, Black. The output ratings for these lights seems to be all over the place. For the XL50, the manufacturer description says 200 lumens while the Amazon description says 139. The XL200 listing at Amazon says 172 lumens. The packaging for my XL50 today says 200 lumens. I suspect they have been upgrading the LED output on each model. Before getting another one I already had an XL50 (gray/silver) and an XL200 (blue). I've had them both for several years, and they've been great. They replaced the old three AAA cell one they used to make that was very long and had the batteries inline. Those units all failed as the batteries would corrode and you couldn't get the tail cap off; if you could, you couldn't get the batteries out. This new design is far superior. I have no idea about the lumens output of my old XL50. I know the new one appears brighter than the old one, but that's through old, tired eyes so I wouldn't put a lot of credence in my conclusion. I chose another XL50 this time because the two extra features of the XL200 are not useful to me. Obviously, these are products I would (and do) buy again -- whether I actually need them or not! 5I really like it when it works I give up! I've had 3 of these due to returning defective units. I really like it when it works, and since I only wanted two brightnesses, it fit the bill. However, all three failed, They started off working well, but then the difference in brightness between hi and low became less and less until there was only one brightness. And then the run time became shorter and shorter until they wouldn't turn on at all. I returned the the first two to Amazon because the time to fail was short enough, (still under warranty, but Maglite wanted me to pay shipping to replace). So I have decided to go in another direction. 1Great flashlight, all considering I have both, the black and silver version of the XL50. Since they are both the XL50 version, and I really have not used the silver one much, I will tell you about the black one I have.These lights, have a good brightness. I can light something up to see it with no problem from over 100 feet away.. If you just need to see if something is there, like where trees or people are, you can see that from many hundred's of feet away. Just do not expect to see in great detail at that distance. The beam is a nice, bright white light, and so far, it still works as good as the day I bought it. It also is pretty durable. I have had it out on the sidewalk, sitting in the direct sunlight (don't recommend doing that), for extended lengths of time, in the middle of the summer. I have dropped it many times on to the concrete and blacktop, and so far, it only has some scratches, nicks and dings in the side. The button in the bottom is easy to push and use, and has a very nice feel to it. Even with all the use I have put it though so far, the switch still feels as sturdy as the day I bought it. I like rechargeable batteries, so I am not putting a lot of money into batteries, so I use some NiMh batteries in mine. Personally, I don't think that I noticed any difference in the brightness between the NiMh ones, and the alkaline's. If there is a difference, it is very small, almost un-noticable, unless comparing side to side. But I do not think that there is a difference.This uses 3 AAA batteries, that all sit in a plastic insert, that slides easily in and out of the flashlight, so changing batteries is very easy. It is very comfortable in your hand, no matter your hand size, but is also small enough to fit into your pocket if needed. I have the solitaire, the 2AAA stick type, this one, the XL150 (which is close to being like this one, but a different switch, which in my opinion, the one on the XL150 sucks), and even some 2 AA with the twist top to turn it on. Personally, as long as you don't need any extra settings, this one, the XL50, and the XL150 are equal. But because of the settings on the switch being a pain on the XL150, I like this one better. My opinion, overall, I like this one the best of all my flashlights.As for the cap, or lens assembly, while they do not advertise this one as a torch type of feature, if you need to, you could take the lens assembly off, and set it down, facing upward, and light up a room enough to see around it, to get around, in a situation, like if the power went out.. or say if you went camping, and to light up a tent. It will work like that in an emergency. Also, say you needed to light up a wide area, you could take the lens assembly off, and use it to light up a wide area, since the lens is fixed, and not adjustable, that is what you would have to do. but you would loose you fixed, hundred feet down the road ability to light things up. But great for smaller areas, like in the same room.Like with any flashlight, they all have their limitations. No ability to focus, cant replace the lens, short battery life, not being bright enough, and even times where things are too bright. I would say that this light is a nice balance between all of them. It is bright enough to see down the road, but also, not too bright to use close up. Small enough to put in your pocket, or easily to use in your hands, but not too big that it is hard to carry around. The button is easy to access, and the battery life, you can get many hours of use out of one set of batteries. No where near as long as some D sized flashlights, but hey, I have seen some AA LED ones that only got around 2 hours max, and that is out of a set of AA batteries. So even at the 200 lumens, version, which has a lower run time on a set then the 100 lumen version, still gets almost 7 hours on a set of batteries, on full power. That, I would say is good power management, and they can get that by using good quality parts. add in that this uses a very easy to find size of battery, and the option of using rechargeable's on top of it. Overall, I think that this is a good, well rounded flashlight, that is one of my favorites, because it has the most balanced, well rounded, features. and add in that it is made in the USA, not china, like 98% of the flashlights out there. There really is not too much that I can say bad about it. But like any flashlight, it still has its limitations. But that does not make it any less likable.I would like to point out, this is a comparison between all the types, and brands, USA and china made, ones that I have seen, used, and tried out. I have never tried the XL200 version, so I can not say anything about that one, which is also about the same type and design as this one. 4Don't buy it in black. I like this flashlight, because I can being working on a project that goes for a few days and not have to replace batteries every 2 hours, like most cheap flashlights. When the batteries get low, it just starts using low setting until depletion. It's got a very bright led and focal point is about the size of a basketball at 5 feet and about the size of tennis ball at 6 inches. It doesn't have that stupid zoom where you can change the focal point.For last two months it has been dropped at least a hundred times, and has held up with no problems.The only thing I would recommend is to not buy it in black, it won't stick out when you're searching for it. I've wasted a lot of time searching for it because it blends in with everything. 5
