Customer Reviews

Only 2 lumens, don't buy this one I wish I had realized their were multiple versions of this flashlight....this one is incandescent and very dim. Not worth returning because of the price of shipping. Buy the much brighter LED version for a couple more dollars. Wish I had known. Stuck with 2 that were supposed to be christmas gifts....waste of money....disappointed 1Sometimes you really want a dimmer light At only 2 lumens, this incandescent Maglite Solitaire flashlight is an order of magnitude less bright than newer designs, including the latest 47-lumen LED version of the Solitaire. But sometimes a much dimmer light is exactly what you want, for example to look for a dropped object in the car without blinding the driver, or to find your keys so you can sneak out without waking your housemate. Just don't leave an old alkaline battery in the flashlight and then forget it in a drawer for several years, because the old battery will leak and ruin the flashlight, which is why I had to buy a replacement. Think I'll keep an Energizer Ultimate lithium battery in this one 4Lite.... light If you need a very bright light that lasts extended periods, spend about twice as much and get an led.I have been using these exact lights for about 30 years. They used to give them away as rewards for Salem cigarettes in the 90s. I personally use these lights for night fishing. They are easy on & off and I can hold it in my mouth, yes that s what I said. They give off enough light to get a fish off of hook or tie a knot. I am in my 50s so eyes not so great. Many places I fish are outlaw so I don t want a huge bright light. They are enough to get me through the woods in a black night. Beam is adjustable and the top comes off for a lantern effect. This is no light for hiking, late night dog walks or spotting deer, but it s size and light are perfect for me and others who may have like tasks. They are quality made in USA and usually last until I lose it. Kids love them too, mine have been taking them from me for years. 5Good Flashlight for Close Quarters Use It's about everything I expected it to be. I wanted a tiny flashlight to carry at work for those occasions I need some light in tight places, it is safer than always trying to use my iPhone. The flashlight is super small and light weight which is great and uses 1- AAA battery so don't expect it to illuminate an entire room from 30' feet away. I needed something to work in areas from about 6" - 4' and this works great for those occasions, if you need something brighter I'd suggest at least a single or double AA model. No issues with battery life as I don't use it for long periods at a time. Seems pretty rugged for such a small flashlight. Over its a good flashlight for a specific need. 5!!!!!!!!! Size doesn't matter !!!! This light is too good to believe for its small size !!!!!! I was looking for a small and lightweight light for my upcoming trip to Anza Borrego where we plan to got for a night trek. Also I wanted a light to try some light painting and some other kind of trick photography.I had heard about the Maglite but had never used any of their lights. Mostly because they are insanely priced. I thought its the best time to try a Maglite which is not very expensive and will serve the dual purpose.Just to clarify many questions, its NOT LED. The light is incandescent. Also many people have asked how many batteries it takes. It takes only one AAA battery and a Duracell AAA battery is supplied with this light.Another feature I liked was the extra bulb provided in the cap. Its a little tricky to get it out of the housing (you need to press the spring in and then pull it out). Innovative !!!!The good features:1. Made of goos quality steel which feels sturdy and durable2. The beam is pretty strong for a light that takes only one AAA battery3. Can be easily focussed or used for a diffused light4. The lanyard supplied with it is of very good quality and can be used to attach the light to bag, etc..5. Extra lamp is supplied in the cap6. The front part can be unscrewed completely to turn it in to a candle light mode for use during camping etc..7. Life time warranty by the manufacturer8. The specifications dont provide the weight. I would say it weighs about 20-25 grams with batteries and lanyard included. The bad:Nothing at all !!! Although I wish it were a little longer and could take two batteries. At this price, I would definitely recommend this light for general purpose and for those who repeatedly need to switch on and off their lights during trekking/hiking.!!!!!!!!!! Worth buying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No regrets !!!!!!!!!! 5Mag Lite oh the memories of when you were the best and owned the market for high end flashlights. It's biggest of the three I have, an Olight mini, a Thrunite mini and then this. This is the only one I will say with an adjustable focal lens. Comes with a keychain strap. It's just lacking on brightness, does come with an extra bulb in base though. Lacking in brightness might not be a bad thing, it means your battery will last a lot longer than these higher output lights. I don't have stats "sorry". I grew up with mag lights and this was my late night comic reader on or one close to it. For those purposes / Maps it's great. But for walking a trail you might be let down. I like the quality of it and it is a nice blast from the past for my collection of today. Seven bucks or so with battery and strap, not bad for a small child, like I said you should get hours instead of a half hour my other ones put out in battery life. 3Get set for disappointment... I bought two of these little Maglite Solitaire flashlights, one for each my wife and me. She wanted the color purple but I could not find that color in LED.If I had not bought the other light on LED, I might have been satisfied with the incandescent version. In total darkness to find a keyhole in a door or something that you dropped it is probably adequate. One of the photos is with the incandescent flashlight. The other is with an LED of the same model. With the two lights side by side, however, the LED outshines the incandescent more than I could have imagined. When my wife saw the difference, having a purple light became unimportant as compared to having an LED that could momentarily blind a potential assailant.I won't bother to return the purple incandescent light. It is what is. It just is not enough with LED available. 2The smallest and most premium Flashlight from Mag Instruments available After the my first solitaire flashlight suffered an unfortunate run in with the local street sweeper I had to replacement as far my lighting needs go, Maglite really produced the best incandescent flashlight available.Continuing in the tradition of Maglite flashlights, the solitaire is the smallest in the brand with the features that that Maglite is known for a precision-machined aluminum body, sleek and solid feel, and most importantly, a just right brightness when you need it. It s water-resistant and stands up to chemical corrosion pending you rinse it off quickly after exposure. In my case, I do a lot of detail work in small and enclosed areas where lighting source larger than my fist tends to be too much and other flashlights are either too bright or large to be of any use. The Solitaire really helps fill the void that respect, helping me light up small and enclosed areas and hold in my mouth so I have both hands-free when I have to improvise a solution. It does have its problems but where the fault lies is murky. I have to agree with most posters that the light beam is plagued by same problem that all incandescent lights in that there is large unlit spot in the center of its light beam which becomes really apparent use the floodlight setting. Powered by single alkaline battery, the light is not bright enough to be used like your average flashlight but it s not your average flashlight it s more of an inspection flashlight for those small dark areas of machinery or the pitch-black areas where this light is your only option. In general, it s great spot flashlight to have around if you can respect its limitations. No doubt others will suggest other lighting options like those LED headbands or smaller ones no larger than your thumb and powered by watch batteries, but do not want to deal with the dubious plastic feel or specialized batteries that I can only get at Radioshack with the high mark-up. 4Let the buyer beware. This is not the typical Maglite Solitaire. Incandescent is the key word. Not knowing anything about the "FL1" standard, I assumed all Maglite Solitaire were the same. After all the "beam distance shows 20 meters (actually it is the distance at which the light projects a useful amount of light, approximately the equivalent of light emitted from a full moon). The lumens is the key. This "solitaire" has only 2 lumens (approximately the light of 2 candles). A real LED Maglite Solitaire has 47 lumens.Although the markings on both my LED Maglite Solitaire and this Maglite Solitaire are identical they are not the same. 1Not bad in quality, but limited in capability Let's start off with the obvious - this is not an LED light, and if you want the brighter output or longer battery life of LED lights, there is an LED version of the Solitaire Maglite Solitaire Led 1AAA - Black Han - SJ3A016, and other brands like Fenix or Streamlight. As far as incandescent lights go, the Mag Solitaire is limited in usefulness due to its low output. It puts out about 90cd on my lux meter when focused, meaning its practical effective range is no more than 10 meters. Also the focused beam is thin, and not as useful as a broader beam. On the positive note, it's inexpensive and water resistant. With a rechargeable Eneloop AAA cell, it provides about 3 hours of semi-regulated output, and doesn't dim as fast as with an alkaline cell. When used in candle mode, it's not as bright as an actual candle, but I consider it a novelty feature anyways. What I dislike about the Maglite Solitaire is that when first turned on, the beam has a huge dark hole in the center, and requires more than a full rotation of the front switch to get the light focused. Also the beam has a bunch of artifacts which could have been smoothed out with a textured reflector. If you're motivated enough, you can put some textured diffuser film on the front to smooth out the beam. Note that the nature of the artifacts depends on the exact position of the bulb, and you will get a cleaner beam if the bulb filament is perfectly centered in the reflector. So in this day and age of LED lights, this wouldn't be my first, second, or even third choice of key chain lights. But if you're looking for a warm-tinted, low output, compact light, and don't want to spend more than five dollars, this one may just fit the bill. 4
