Need a full sized multitool? Buy this one, NOW!I bought this, as I needed a full sized multitool, to do jobs the smaller ones can t do. This does not disappoint in that regard. If you get the black oxide version, you will need a lightly damped (in a light oil) microfiber or lint-free towel to wipe the tool off. This process took me about an hour or two, as I m a bit OCD when it comes to my multitools. This aside, the tool works perfectly with all of the tools I ve tried. I would highly recommend this, or any tool from Leatherman, to anyone. However, I do need to address a few concerns. Because this tool had full-sized pliers it is going to be heavy compared to many other multitools, and may be too much for you to carry on your belt. I manage to carry it when I need it. Since it works with Leatherman s bit kit, there is no shortage of bits, or other tools that will work with that kit and the optional bit extender. As for the bit extender accessory, it will also work with standard bits, too, and not just Leatherman s. If you need additional bits, I d suggest just getting the extender, and using standard bits with it. You can get a lot of standard bits far cheaper than Leatherman s kit.5Field Mechanic's best friend. Second owend Surge. First was lost. I was attached to that tool in bad ways. I am a diesel technician, and it saved me a ton of footwork. The new tool has a couple features I like and don't. One, is that I can replace the cutting edges on the pliers. That's nice. Only down, is that they replaced the tine driver attachment that was good for things like eyeglasses. I didn't need another flat blade attachment. But, I bought the tool kit/driver set and it's even more versatile. After losing my Leatherman Surge, I bought a SOG multi-tool. I own and enjoy several SOG brand knives. But, they just can't match the Leatherman. Unless something serious changes, I won't stray again. The surge has been the most used and versatile every day carry tool I have ever owned. Yeah, it's a bit bulky and heavy for some men. Well worth the cost and weight for everything it's saved me. In probably $50k in tools, I use this the most. 5- Just okay - terrible finishing and assembly ...- Most small blades needed dressing (VERY obvious curl on a couple), NO WAY could I open ANY blade with my thumb - needed a screwdriver to pry open the blades, pliers to pull them open (either get that device calibrated or stop using it). ALL blades/tools are WAAAY too tight. Thennn - whoever allowed the drivers needed to adjust the tightness to be the same size - needs re-training on deign. Whn you turn one side, the opposite side turns (should be anchored -or- two different sizes used) - these were 'reeded' and so tight I could not get any hold on any of them - even with small tools - they should be squares or maybe have opposing holes so you could use a spanner on them for adjustments. As it is it now - the terrible assembly - for a 'pocket' tool costing OVER $100 (regardless of metal quality) makes this a 2-star, at best, as it is virtually un-useable as it is. Trying to figure out how to 'fix' it versus sending it back - as, at this moment, have no confidence a replacement will be any better. Heavy, substantial in-hand, but BELOW average overall.2Sturdy and High Quality. Leatherman delivers a superior product. I love my leatherman. I had a Leatherman "Wave" (not this product) for about 8 years and I used it until all the blades were dull and the little screwdriver busted. I've tried Gerber models as well as a few others, but nothing has the solid feel and smooth action of the leatherman. The Surge is a solid tool that works very well in almost every circumstance. The blades are sturdy and came extremely sharp out of the box. I love the little screwdriver that flips from Flat to Phillips head. I bought a separate set that extends that screwdriver by adding a 3" extension that fits the leatherman standard screwdriver head as well as standard "drill bit" hexagonal heads. In addition, I purchased a set of flat leatherman style heads so that I have a full set of compatible allen wrenches that slips right in my pocket. I don't need them every day, but when I'm helping someone move, or doing any kind of household maintenance, I use them regularly. Between those two optional purchases my leatherman does a lot more than advertised. 5This Indispensable Multi Is AWESOME!Well, it's been about three months now since I picked up my second Leatherman multi-tool, the SURGE (I lost my first, the Supertool 300, but that's another story). And I must say, I am not surprised at how much I love this thing. What DOES surprise me, is how quickly I have grown to love this new and improved model over even my previous Leatherman-- cuz I really loved that one, too! Not a day went by that I didn't find one or more (several, typically) uses for it, and this new SURGE is no different in that respect-- just... that... much... better. The look of it in black; the quality build, the precise craftsmanship, its ease of access (especially the one-hand, thumb-assisted outer blades), its portability (yet with just the right amount of heft to not feel flimsy or like a toy or knockoff)-- it is a great piece of equipment, and as such goes with me wherever I go, always right there at my side.If you are in the market for a great multi-tool that you can use for everything from DIYing, and stuff around the house, all the way up to hiking, camping and survival, then I can't say enough for this compact yet very sturdy number. Do yourself a favor and invest in one. IMHO, it's worth every penny of the 100 bucks I got mine for.5Bunk ShipmentTool arrived very quickly, Amazon is amazingly fast I own many leatherman tools with little to complain about. However, the Surge I received was lacking in many ways. The tools are loose and are able to flap out even while another is in locked position. Most deplorable is the condition of the interchangeable saw, which even after being locked into position, wobbles more than several degrees back and forth and clearly is unstable. Aside from this this tool being hurriedly assembled and uninspected; there is a larger problem. Two of the same handles were used to assemble this Surge. The ruler starts at 6 on both sides.....measurements 1-5 on the tool are non-existent...much like my faith in this product sadly .1Cavalry scout/every day guyFirst of all I own lots of multi tools for various purposes from military to my EMS load outs to my hiking climbing load outs.I've been using my SOG assist multi tool for my military purposes I added a saw to it to use it for making dig ins for OPs but I got the surge and it took the SOGs spot on my belt I love this multi tool it's a little heavy but it's well worth it since you get that real tool feel and it packs so much plus I love how big the pliers are big blades and great scissors. Yes the black oxide coating does need to get wiped off a little but it's no issue just use a paper towel and now you have a non reflective tool and that's important in my line of work as a scout. The saw on this bad boy is a beast. The screw drivers are great! If your a backpacker I'd get a wave or something even lighter. For EDC I use a either my swiss Spirit or my juice just cause this things to heavy doesn't mean I haven't thrown it in my bag though. Love this tool I would defintly recommend it great for handy house or car work you'll find some use for this someway somehow you'll have it in your hand and be like hey I'm glad I bought this.5ATTENTION: Please consider this before purchasing the black version. Others have talked about this. I almost took a star off**** I encourage you to read the entire post because it's important and will save you frustration. But, to summarize this post, IT NEEDS MAINTENANCE RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! If you want it to operate smoothly, please take heed to my advice. If you're going to purchase the black version, go right now and buy a tamper-proof torx bit set as well as hoppe's cleaning solvent, gun oil, cleaning patches, and q-tips because you will need them to properly adjust the tightness of the screws and to clean off the excess coating & apply proper lubrication (because it did not really come lubricated at all).. It's a good idea to have these maintenance items on hand anyways because you will eventually need them to periodically maintain its condition, but the condition it came in brand new was frustrating since it is a top-of-the-line tool.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Here's my full message:If you want a review of the tool itself, there are already enough reviews out there to study and I can verify that they are accurate because this tool is everything what you want in this class of multitool. However, I want to accentuate the condition this tool came to me brand new so that you are aware and understand. I am not talking about sharpness of tools or build construction, those were perfect. I am specifically speaking for the coating and lubrication of the black version only and would assume this would have been different with the regular stainless model.First, all of the reviews talking about the coating coming off (and having black hands) were accurate. I discovered this for myself but realized that it's not the coating that rubs off, it's that there is a lot of excess residual paint sitting on all surfaces of the tool. You WILL need to remove this, and I'll talk about that below. But, the coating is actually very durable. Also, the reviews stating that some tools were too tight or loose were also accurate because I needed to adjust mine right out of the box. Please read below because you need a special tool to do this.*YOU NEED A TAMPER-PROOF TORX BIT SET TO ADJUST THE SCREWS. Normal torx bits will not work because they do not have the tiny hole in the middle of the bit and will not allow the screw to loosen. These are security screws that hold the tool together, which is great but it means normal torx bits don't work. So go right now and buy them along with the leatherman if you don't already have them because some of the tools require excessive force to open right out of the box which could result in injury or death (halfway joking).*YOU NEED CLEANING SOLVENT AND LUBRICATING OIL TO GET RID OF THE EXCESS COATING AND PROPERLY LUBE THE TOOL. Apparently, leatherman did not care to make sure their product was properly lubed or free of excess coating after manufacturing. It's kind of disappointing when a premium tool like this needs maintenance right out of the box. The operation and deployment of tools was a bit grindy and crunchy. BUT, this is nothing to fret over because you will eventually need to maintain its condition when it starts to get grindy and crunchy. I like to think of this as a friendly reminder by leatherman that you should have tool cleaning products on hand in the first place.I personally used hoppe's cleaning solvent and gun oil that I had on hand, and it instantly made the world of difference. I'm assuming most people who buy this tool are likely to have hoppe's somewhere in their house (because most multi tool owners are probably gun owners too!), but I would still recommend you use hoppe's even if you do not own a firearm. I use hoppe's on all tools because the stuff is just magical. Not only does it make the leatherman smell heavenly, it actually 'loosened' it up and now operates like it should; nice and smooth.I recommend you use gun patches or q-tips soaked in the cleaning solvent and scrub in every nook and cranny to get all the excess coating off, then put small drops of oil in ALL of the pivoting points or areas of friction (such as the liner lock and plier storage area of the handle) and work it in by opening & closing each tool several times. Again, if you don't have cleaning solvent and gun oil on hand, go right now and buy them along with the leatherman because this is a necessity to keep the tool in great shape. You'll be surprised at how much excess paint comes off, almost like a gun that hasn't been cleaned in 1000 rounds (extremely dirty and you will use lots of cleaning patches). This was very disappointing to me and I almost took a star off because leatherman doesn't seem to care about shipping their amazing tools in proper shape. It's kind of frustrating when you get a new expensive tool and immediately have to do some maintenance on it. But again, you'll need these things to take care of it over its life anyways so it's not a huge deal. I left the star on because it still deserves all of them. It's a 5-star tool that came in a 2-star 'operational condition', but the tool is so awesome that I kept all 5 stars."Take care of your tools and they will take care of you." - someone5Disappointed..Read onThe Leatherman Surge I received had a hard time releasing the pliers tool from one side. I mean it s really stuck in there and I had to use a lot of force to get it loose. When I did open the pliers, I notice that it was used and had worn down areas on the teeth of the pliers. Then I started noticing more areas that s been used and had a lot deep scratches. This is not my first Leatherman so I know it does come with minor scratches from the factory but these are more daily used scratches. Also I know Leatherman s from the factory is very stiff and you have to break them in but this one seems like one of the screw driver tool is bent and it s pushing against the plier head. I m very disappointed to receive a USED Surge rather than a new one that I paid for.1Great tool and even better customer service from NetRush Purchased this tool to replace a Wave that was taken by TSA (my bad forgetting it was in my laptop backpack). The Surge is considerably heavier, but sturdier, than the Wave. I decided to splurge for the Surge because of the interchangeable t-shank blades, the replaceable wire cutters and the better scissors. While the cost is a bit steep, I m a firm believer in you get what you pay for. These should hold up well for many, many years with proper maintenance (and making sure I don t leave it in my carry on!)The reason I mentioned the great customer service is that the item description mentions a leather sheath; I received a vinyl one. Not a huge deal, but I have always had great luck with leather in the past. So a short email to NetRush requesting a leather sheath in exchange for the vinyl one was met with a very courteous reply and they told me to keep the vinyl one. So five stars to the seller :)Pros:Legendary Leatherman qualityInterchangeable bladesReplaceable wire cuttersGreat scissorsCons:Blade exchanger a bit hard to open, even after using some 3-in-1 oilNo micro driver (was one of the most useful tools on the Wave) 5I Love It, but, nonetheless, there is an issue....Pros: Large, sturdy, tightly engineered. The one hand operation is just a nice feature. The black powder coating to the metal is a nice touch. The tools lock open, and are without issue. It holds to the standard leatherman quality.Cons: The only con to this multi tool is the first few times you use it, you will get some of the excess black coating on your hands you'll want to wash off. It's from where they oiled the different areas, and is no need to concern, it's just annoying for the first few times.Other Thoughts: The molle sheath is comes with sucks majorly. This tool is a stand in for my Super Tool 300 currently sent to Leatherman for repair. It's about the same size, listed as "Heavy Duty" on Leatherman's site. So, you'll want to buy accordingly. The Premium Leather Sheath available elsewhere on the site is a perfect addition, as well as the bit extender. I'd save your money for the bits, as with the extender, normal size bits will work perfectly. The bit extender is listed as being for the Wave, but it's a standard across all Leatherman products.5I love it, but...So I want to say if you're considering this tool definitely go for it. It is excellent. This tool has practically everything I used to use on my Swiss Champ plus quality pliers and a full screwdriver set if you order the "bit kit". It is generally very well built and very well thought out. Crimpers and the wire stripper are something my Champ didn't have. I really love this tool. Here's where the "but" comes in, it is stiff, very stiff. After a week of working it constantly it has loosened some. If you have weak wrists or hands this might not be the tool for you. I'm 215 and built like Mr T, I am not a weak man and I definitely found the stiffness frustrating for the first little bit. Mostly I find this to be a problem because it prohibits one-handed use. But after a week of just absolutely constant working the joints it has loosened to the point I can kind of open it one handed sometimes. I could very much see how this would be a problem for anyone that might be a little frail. Other than that minor problem it's a great tool and I can see myself getting probably decades of use out of this thing.4This thing is a beast! This is the King of multitools! Some people complain about the weight, but I don't find it cumbersome. It's a heavy duty tool that comes stacked with a full set of useful gadgets. Both blades, scissors, file/saw are accessible without opening the device. Which turns out to be a handy feature. It is an incredibly sturdy unit. Unlike less expensive models, there is no flex or twisting when heavy pressure is applied to the pliers and cutters. It feels like something right out of your tool box. Although a lot of tradesmen carry this model, it's works just as well in the woods. There is also a hidden tool. At the butt end of the file/saw slot is a lanyard loop. Take the saw blade or file and push it out. I add a 3" loop of 550 cord to make a 2 finger lanyard and it also makes it easier to draw. The sheath is well made and replaceable at a low cost, as well are the file and cutters. The saw blade is interchangeable with Bosch T-Grip blades available at any hardware store. This is an expensive item, but take my advice. Just buy the additional driver bits and extension at the same time. You will want them too.5The Best I've had many Leatherman multitools. Before this one, I had an old charge that I carried everyday. I got this when I sent it in to be repaired (replaced actually...at no "charge".....compliments to Leatherman.....with a newer and imo, not as good model). Now I carry this. the scissors are the best, the blades are large, you can swap out the saw blade with many different kinds of other brand name jig-saw blades. It's big, so it's difficult to use with just one hand, which I do miss about the charge. Other then that, it's great. I use it literally everyday. I like the new sheaths that snap closed (hay-ted the velcro.) Get it....worth every penny. 5
