Customer Reviews

Awesome for DIY but caution if sending it as gift. This product was a five star for construction and materials. Equal or superior to my vintage lamps however i am giving it four stars because it arrived cloudy and the fluid was too color-saturated to throw the light though the wax. I have had lava lights since the 70's and am familiar with how they work. I ran it several times to settle it and nothing improved it and I thought I got duped. But then I changed out the fluid per directions I found online. If you take a few minutes to understand the simple chemistry behind how it works the you can take what looks like a bad purchase to something even awesomer than expected. Less food coloring equals better light refraction which is the true joy of having a LL. One drop should do it. If you run it for a day and it's still too pale add another drop. Plan on 3-4 hours to titrate the lava in your lamp using Epsom salts. The wax is better quality than what you can get in a vintage lamp but the fluid seems to get adulterated in transit. I would give it five stars for a DIYselfer but 2 stars if you are blindly giving it as a gift. If you fix it yourself remember to seal the top with wax or glue gun so the fluid does not evaporate. 4A decent replacement of the 90s lamps This has worked better than I had expected. I expected it to be crap, as many people had stated about it, but it works fine. It is NOT the lava lamp of the 90s, with its beautiful liquid and whatever the stuff is made up of. The contents of this one seem to be more of a chunky gel, but once melted, works great. My son has left it on for 8 hours without issue (by accident). It doesn't get outrageously hot like others had mentioned, but why on earth are people handling a metal heated lamp? (my son wondered the same thing)My son got this for Christmas, and has used it 5ish times per week, for the past 6 weeks. Still works as good as the day he got it. Thus far, I'd recommend it to others. 4So far it s a definite NO!!!! Okay.... so I used to have a beautiful purple liquid with orange/ yellow lava back in the day and it was so gorgeous and relaxing. The liquid was crystal clear but purple and the lava flowed very fast and big blobs little blobs - it was magical really lol. This lava lamp is NOT relaxing or magical or anything even close to the lava lamp I had years ago. I ordered the purple liquid with yellow lava and the liquid is completely cloudy and opaque and more or a pink color when on. You can barley see the lava due to the cloudiness. I had left the lamp on for 10 hours and again today hoping the cloudiness would clear up. It has not. I will keep updating my review if anything changes but for now I m returning the lamp. These photos are completely in focus and not blurry - this is exactly what this lamp looks like - cloudy murky water and barley any lava which you can not see anyways through the cloudy water. 1Works for us. We love this thing. This one is a bit larger than another one we have. We love them both. It takes them a while to heat up and get going so I turn them on around 4:30 PM so they re going by 6 or 6:30. While they re heating up the blobs are pretty weird, not pretty, but once they re working, they are perfect. Just be patient. They seem to work better as time has gone on. We set ours up and left them without disturbing them and that may be why they work for us. Nostalgia. Love them. 5Just Needs a Little Nudge A lot of people have mentioned in their reviews of this product that the "lava" doesn't move around in the lamp like it should.Mine has similar trouble getting started, but I have found a simple fix for it.I let mine heat up for a few hours and if the "lava" is still not moving around like it should, then I pick it up with one hand on each end of it (it will be hot) and GENTLY turn the bottle upside down, then right side up again and set it down. After the bubbles settle and you wait a while, this usually fixes the problem and gets the liquid moving around. 4Excellent--read my FULL honest review. Ok guys, I've been into lava lamps for almost 30 years now, and this one is fantastic. i got the 16" one, and i'm happy as can be--it's the real deal, not some cheap knockoff or badly-made imitation. it's a great, solidly-built product, and i'm loving it =)I've read a lot of negative reviews here. but before deciding this item is lousy, see below--here's why so many people seem to give this lava lamp a bad rating.1) "the wax refuses to melt!! i demand a refund!" these folks aren't giving the lamp enough time to heat up. on your first run, it typically takes 4-7 hours for the wax to soften and loosen. you can't just run it for 30 mins, switch it off, and say "Nope! It doesn't work!". it does work, but you gotta be patient and let it do its thing.2) "it's been 12 hours, and the wax still refuses to melt! i still want a refund!!" the prob here is likely this: the metal ring at the bottom shifted during shipping. it isn't sitting flat against the bottom of the lamp. if that ring doesn't heat up, it can't melt the wax at the bottom of the lamp.if the ring isn't flat against the bottom, let the lamp run for about 2-3 hours, then GENTLY turn the lamp on its side and GENTLY swirl the melted wax away from the metal ring, then GENTLY tilt the lamp upright so the ring falls down flat on the bottom. if you don't do it gently, you can break up the hot wax, and it'll be weeks before all the little oozy globs settle down.once you shift the ring so it sits flat on the bottom, presto, the wax should start lava-ing (new word?) within an hour or so.3) "the liquid is cloudy". well, wax is...waxy. little bits can break off during shipping, or if you handle the lamp roughly. it isn't "broken". just run the lamp for about 2 hours so the wax softens a little, then switch off the lamp and let it cool completely. repeat if necessary.this helps those little loose globs float up, then cool down and float down to the wax on the bottom, where they'll stick and become one big piece again. you can't really "break" wax. once melted, it'll reform into the usual big glop on the bottom of the lamp as intended.4) "the bulb was broken." ok, fair enough. glass CAN break during shipping. mine arrived intact, and the lamp was in perfect condition.5) "the base and cap are silver-painted plastic." what? mine is definitely silver-colored metal. if you plink it with a penny, the base rings with a metallic sound...definitely not plastic.6) "the wax/water faded!" ok guys, you NEED to keep lava lamps out of direct sunlight. the sun is POWERFUL, even when passing through windows (and sometimes drapes). direct sunlight = sucks the colors outta your lava lamp, maybe in a matter of weeks, or a month if you're lucky.to preserve its colors, keep the lamp away from your windows, or use a dark hand towel or t-shirt as a cover when you aren't using it. do NOT put anything over the lamp while it's switched on, or while it's hot!!! it needs at least 3-4 hours to cool down completely! only YOU can prevent lava lamp house fires!i've had at least 40 lava lamps in my life, and this one is stunning, vibrant, and in excellent condition. it's a genuine Lava Lamp. absolutely no regrets here, though i wish the cord were a few feet longer...but that's easily solved with a cheap extension cord =)i'm crazy about the cool purple and hot orange colors--it looks just like the West Coast sunsets i loved as a kid growing up in San Diego. that's exactly what i wanted, it's what i paid for, and i got what i wanted.my only small gripe is that the cap is a little loose--it doesn't sit snugly atop the lamp. it's fine though. it won't fall off by itself. it fits well, but it doesn't "grip" the top of the lamp.i love this thing, and i'd definitely buy another one in a different color.TL;DNR version:- totally love the lava lamp. it functions perfectly and arrived in mint condition, including the bulb.- removed half a star because the top cap is no longer designed to sit snugly at the top of the lamp.- removed half a star because it'd be nice if the cord were quite a bit longer (like the old 1960s lava lamps). 4Works Great if You Replace the Light Bulb This 16.3-inch Lava Lamp is good, but only after I replaced the bulb with a Philips 45W PAR16 Dimmable Flood Light Bulb 434746 available on Amazon or at Home Depot. (By the way, the lamp is listed on the websites as a Halogen, but the package does not state Halogen on it.) The 40 watt incandescent bulb that comes with it just doesn't provide enough heat to get the wax moving. In fact, I ordered this lamp and it worked for a day, then the wax would just sit in the bottom no matter how many hours it was on. I thought it was defective, so I returned it and Amazon replaced it with a new one. The new one did the same thing as the first one, so I figured that it was not getting enough heat for it to work properly. I tried several bulbs including a 60-watt bulb (which worked well, it just got a little too hot). I finally tried the Philips 45 PAR16 indoor/outdoor flood light and it seems to work well. It does get hot, but I can still hold my fingers on the base without it burning. The glass globe, however, does get a bit too hot to keep my fingers on. But it seems to be fine. I hope this info is helpful to others who may think the lamp doesn't work. I now really like the lamp.I gave it 4 stars because I had to fix the lamp for it to work. 4Needs a stronger bulb... Many reviewers have expressed that the wax in their lamps just sits in a lump at the bottom. This happened to me as well. What a disappointment. I tried everything to no avail... left in on for hours, cycled it off and on... nothing changed. When I gave up, my husband said it just wasn't getting hot enough to get the wax moving like it's supposed to. So we purchased a 60W ceiling fan bulb at Home Depot, put it in the lamp, and held our breath. It's the same size as the original bulb, just higher wattage. I'm sure you can get these here on Amazon too, or Walmart, Lowe's, etc. Within a couple of hours, the wax was starting to flow, and within another hour it was moving like it's supposed to. Now that I have a stronger bulb, I can say this lamp is beautiful. It did seem a tad cloudy initially but cleared up quickly. If you've had this same issue with a lump of wax at the bottom, I'd suggest trying what I did as long as you are careful and keep an eye on the lamp (which you should obviously do anyway). I don't think I'd keep it on for hours on end, though, so just be cautious and aware. While I do notice the lamp gets slightly hotter with the 60W bulb, it's nothing extreme and stands to reason that it would get hotter anyway. I finally get the enjoy the true beauty of this lamp since replacing the bulb. Having said that, I likely won't buy another one until the company gets their obvious issues resolved with these. One star deducted for having to replace the bulb and the headache of trying to figure out what was wrong in the first place. 4Nice lamp but opened box/ lamp slightly damaged/ no manual I was very disappointed when the lamp arrived because the box had obviously been opened and the lamp been cramped back inside (the box was budging). There was tape on the top to keep the box close. I did not like getting a box that was second hand when I bought a new product. The metal top also had a slight damage. After seeing the product, my main worry is that the top of the lamp (underneath the silver covering) is a bottle-type cap. So, I was suddenly worried about danger in case the lamp fall (was it under pressure, which chemicals were inside). BUT there was no Safety or Maintenance Manual in the box. Was it missing because the box had been opened or was it never included? I do not know. Customer services at Amazon were charming and help me find some info on their website (though I have not yet seen a complete list of chemicals). But it was my son's birthday that day so we decided not to return the lamp. The lamp looks great and is currently warming up, so I cannot tell you if it works well yet.Just as a note for those who want to buy these for kids. We decided that he will put it on the floor (carpeted) and not on his desk (as I originally intended) because the 3 parts (metal base, glass and metal top) do not screw together. They are just placed on top of each other, so can fall apart easily if the lamp is bumped (as I would expect it will happen in my son's room).I had a Lava lamp in my 20s and I hope my son will love it as much. I was just disappointed that it came in this way it did. 3Poor quality product. Lava lights are so groovy .... have one from 20 years ago, still works great. This one worked for 6 months. The bottom is now burnt looking and lava wax wont flow at all. I contacted customer service for a return, in hopes they would work with me to get another one or give me a clue what happened to this lamp, but they denied the request since it was over a year since purchase.... and that was it. These are fragile and a lot can go wrong between the bulbs, cloudy liquid and shook up wax. Be careful with them. I still dont know why this wont work and i dont recommend it to anyone, based on that fact. If i knew it was my fault, that would be different. The lava wont flow anymore and that's a common complaint with these. 1
