Good Lock, but SmartKey can be touchy It works fine, but a word of warning, I had to buy 2 of these because I screwed the first one up. I bought this to install on the house and re-key to match the other Kwikset locks. Unfortunately I failed to properly follow the procedure to re-key and ended up with a lockset I could not open with either key! There are videos online that seem to show that you can fix them, but I could not do it. I had to buy a another knob. Before I tried the re-key on number two, I binge watched videos on how to use the Smartkey system; it works. 4Re-keys in seconds! These smartkey locks make replacing existing locks a breeze. You can easily re-key the lock in seconds to match others in your house - assuming you already have Kwickset locks.Only issue is when the keys are not included in the box. Yes, I ordered 2 and one box did not have the keys, they fell out somewhere between Kwickset and Amazon s distribution warehouse as the boxes are rather cheap and anything can fall out of the slot on the bottom. With he help if a YT video I was able to disassemble the unit and reset the pins to re-key without having to deal with Amazon customer service to return and order another. The first photo shows everything that is included in the box. The second shows the barrel that I had to manually re-key since it did not include a set of keys. 5Check keys before you install I've used kwickset for years and have yet to have a problem. Well, until the day this one came in. Unfortunately for me, one of the keys didn't work and the next key turned roughly to one side and never turned again. Guess who was locked out of their house. A locksmith got it turning and the key was changed. I assumed and didn't check before doing the 5 minute install. Shame on me. The product price is a value until you add professional help for a key set that didn't work in the door. 2Good idea and not very expensive Since we have moved to a new house, we wanted all the entry locks to be the same. I have purchased several of this type with no problems. This one time the package came without the master key which means you can't re-key it. Amazon was GREAT about exchanging this for one that worked. With service like this you can't go wrong. For those of you who have rental houses, all you would have to do to re-key the house for the next renter would be to insert the original master key that came with the lock and use any other Quickset key. 4quick easy install, quick easy smartkey reset, decent product so far Pros:- speed. as long as you're not installing with a deadbolt, you may be able to do a speed run of uninstalling your old knob and installing one of these knobs in 5 minutes or less.- value (got mine here for around $12)- availability (can be found here, Home Depot, Lowes, wherever)- SmartKey re-key thing is wonderful. Lose your key? Stolen? Who cares. Re-key the tumblers to a different key. Stick your old key in, rotate, stick the smartkey tool in (or anything of similar size), take out, take out old key, put in new key, rotate, done. New key now works, old (original) key doesn't. Can be done in 10 seconds or less. Vacationing? re-key 1 lock to an alternate key and give to neighbor. when you come back, re-key back to your key. you can let them keep the one you gave them or not, doesn't matter, it doesn't work any more...- lock cylinder rotation tool free (at this time) + free shipping - have to call to order- SmartKey tool includedNeutral:- sturdy enough but not ultra-strong.- aesthetics. they're not particularly fancy. but it's a doorknob so who cares. most are utilitarian.- smaller size cover may not cover larger openings- will the re-key tumbler reset function cause the lock to fail over time? I might not know this for years to come. Other reviewer(s) had immediate fails. I haven't had this issue...yet...- the SmartKey resetable tumbler concept could possibly allow locks to be easily defeated by criminals. There are YouTube videos cracking this TYPE of lock (due to the SmartKey function itself) in seconds by use of a blank + screwdriver. Note any dummy can kick down most dead-bolted doors since door frames are little more than plywood and a child of sufficient size could simply break a window. The dude in No Country For Old Men used a simple canister of some kind of pressurized gas and to knock out all the locks in that movie...On and on. I called and asked Kwikset if the YouTube videos are of CURRENT models and they say NO!!! Do you believe them? Are they still easily defeated?? They say no. It's possible you only want to install these INSIDE your home as I have to lock up certain rooms from kids...Obviously it isn't in the best interest of the manufacturer to highlight flaws in it's own products. Kwikset do have SmartKey products (deadbolts) that supposedly offer the ANSI/ BHMA level 1 (highest) rating but this isn't one of them.Cons:- the 2 screws that hold the lock side and key side together can be a tad difficult to align at first. if you bought a bunch of these, you'll probably get the hang of it after doing 1 or 2 of em. fairly annoying though...- as others have noted, there is no simple, easy, immediate method of reversing the lock. whether your knob is on the left or right is a crap-shoot. Kwikset simply could have 2 options for purchase here (preset left of right - simple as that). I get why they don't. some people would be at a store, see 2 options and have no idea or not remember which side of the door the knob is on (left vs right), then leave the store without purchasing or purchase something else (and no business wants a customer to do that). Another solution could have been a more simple hardware solution of being able to rotate the lock somehow. but there isn't with this knob. this means you'll either have to install upside down (not a big deal to some, but it would bother many anal retentive people such as myself) or you'll have to reverse it by using their Kwikset 81467 Cylinder Remover Tool (or a long screwdriver of approx similar size). there are YouTube videos that show you how to do this. This is especially lame for deadbolts...At the end of the day, the price and SmartKey re-key function (as long as it doesn't decrease security of the product) would make this generally superior to other brands. 4Simply Amazing This entry lock is amazing. When I ordered it I had no idea what "SmartKey" was all about. I re-key locks myself by removing the cylinder and replacing the pins to match the key I want to use so I thought this was a new and simpler way of removing the cylinder. All I had to do was insert the key that came with the lock and turn it 1/4 turn, insert the little tool that came with the set, remove the key and insert my house key. The lock was instantly re-keyed to my old house key without taking anything apart. I love it and will probably install these on my rental properties to make it easy to re-key between tenants. 5So-so quality lock - but good customer service from Kwikset While I love the option of keying my own locks, I am not a huge fan of the quality of this Kwikset lock. I had a problem with the barrel being loose on first lock I purchased. However, I must say that Kwikset was excellent and sent me a replacement after I first sent them a couple of photos of the faulty lock. Great service like this is getting rarer these days. The easy key function is excellent which avoids having to have the locks re-keyed by a locksmith if a key is lost or stolen. I have four locks keyed alike so loosing a key can be expensive. Now if someone in the family loses a key, I only need to replace the keys.I think for most applications this is an OK lock but if you live in a high crime area, I would recommend a more sturdy lock. I will note that I purchased Kwikset's top security deadbolt with the easy key function and it was much better quality than the older Kwikset deadbolt that was not their most secure lock. So, if you are set on Kwikset, spend the extra money and get their higher security locks. 3Great Mid-Grade Lock. Love the smartkey feature! I got these because I use the smartkey system throughout my home. While these aren't the strongest locks (they are grade 3, the lowest), they are more than sufficient for deterrent. Please note these are NOT the same ones you get at the big box stores. Those are the grade 1 locks, which are a bit more expensive. Having just replaced some old locks, the Grade 3 lack some of the cylinder protection compared to the grade 1 that I replaced. These were very easy to install and I had 4 locks on two doors installed in under an hour. If you need a basic lock and aren't terribly concerned about needing super high security, then this model will work just fine for you. Please don't get me wrong, they aren't cheap locks by any means, they just aren't as heavy duty as the Grade 1 certified locks. Here is some info from Kwikset:Product DescriptionAs the industry leader, Kwikset has provided trusted security for over 60 years and has become synonymous with security, peace of mind, style and innovation. Price is good but the description said "Universal handing; fits both right handed and left handed doors" which is not exactly true. If the key hole is upside down like mine is now it was keys for the door opening from the opposite direction. If when you enter your doorway the hinges are on the right hand side this is the correct configuration.OK an update is that Kwikset sent me a tool to turn the lock the right way. I haven't done it yet but there is a video on their website showing how it's done.I have used Kwikset for years and now all my doors are the SmartKey sets. 4Feels somewhat cheap and small. Some positives. Purchased the entry knob through Amazon warehouse. Will preface the review that my doorknob came slightly used and the keys that came with it did not work (must've been rekeyed and returned with original keys) so it was installed and then promptly uninstalled. The knob and locking mechanism felt cheap (Light weight, thin metal) in comparison to the older knob I removed and the kwikset deadbolts I was also installing, and I was hesitant on using it for a primary front door entry. I will likely order the juno model as it appears to be more robust.Positives: installation is relatively easy and if you have the original key, rekeying is a breeze. Would use it for internal entry points (garage, etc.) without much reservation. 3
