    One key works 3 deadbolts I needed to replace a Kwikset dead bolt that had become damaged (by me) - reading about the Kwikset smart key, I figured I d give it a try. After reading the reviews, pro and con, 5 Star vs 1 Star, I figured I d give it a shot. If a person is determined to get in they will, and a lock is just a deterrent, but having one key is a plus. After doing the rear door, and setting the lock to the old Kwikset key and finding that it really worked, I ordered 2 more, 1 to replace the front lock and 1 for the garage door. All now work with the same key, but save the key that comes with the lock, mark the keys to the locks they were paired to, do this should you ever need to rekey them, but we re very happy with the purchase. (You get keys with lock to initially set the tumblers, which you need to save). Questions, send them to me. 5This is a must if you have your own short term rental unit Great deadbolt and easy to rekey. I have several smartkey locks and usually rekey the front and side doors when we have a house pet sitter staying here. This is a must if you have your own short term rental unit such as VRBO or air b and b. Please mark my review as helpful if you found it useful for you. 4Five Stars I cannot believe this deadbolt learns an old key you have! But it worked, and it looks gorgeous. 5The 2nd one worked Great idea. A good way to have multiple lock open with the same key.The lock came with a key and the lock worked with that key. After I tried to rekey the lock, I was left with no functional key. I followed the directions precisely. Either the lock was bad or the directions were poorly written.I called the manufacturer who agreed (with no argument) to honor the warantee send me a new lock. The new lock has not yet arrived. They did not have one in stock and said that it would take about 6 weeks.Meanwhile, I purchased another identical lock at Home Depot. A technician at Home Depot rekeyed the lock for me. He did not do it exactly as the directions said to, but it it easy to understand the confusion. I recommend that any other purchaser call the manufacturer and have them walk you through the process or have a technician at the place of purchase do it for you. However my son has several of these lock and reports that he had no problem.The second lock works well and has been properly rekeyed. 4Great Safety Feature Love these. We replaced all of the locks on our outside doors with these locks. They are keyed on only one side. To get out in case of fire, or for a guest to open the door, he or she only needs to turn the knob on the inside. No need to get out the key, Easy out with no key needed. We have people come to clean, and it s not safe to leave the door unlocked or leave the key in the lock. I can lock the door for safety, and when they are ready to leave, they can just turn the knob. A great safety feature. 5Smooth Operation Replaced old Kwikset lock when I forgot my keys in another state and was locked out. So I drilled through the old lock and replaced with this one. A new lock costs a lot less than a locksmith or other entry damage. Anyway, 5 minute installation and smooth operation since. I have always loved the rekey feature, so nice to have. When I have guest I just rekey the lock, give them a key to my house, then when they leave I rekey the lock back to my original keys. Nice feature. On rental property it's a nice cost savings when switching tenants. 5The Smartkey feature is pretty awesome. Yes it's not extremely difficult to have ... The Smartkey feature is pretty awesome. Yes it's not extremely difficult to have your locks re keyed, but that costs money and time. With the Kwikset Smartkey thing it takes about 5 seconds.Important.....1. Don't lose the flat wire thing they give you as you need that to re key.2. Kwikset claims it only works with their keys. I'm not sure about that but my other locks were Kwikset I'm not sure if that would be an issue.3. Follow directions exactly when re keying or you have to go the more complicated route of re keying a partial keying. Directions aren't hard to follow, just read twice re key once.4. To re key you have to have the original key inserted and half turned so don't be worried someone with the flat wire can re key your house while you out.5. You dont have to re key as the lock comes with keys. 5Useful with potential, but...have concerns. Not crazy about this item, though it is easy to rekey and easy to instal, which I like. The items look good too.My issue is with the rekeying mechanism - it is "fiddly" and you can easily render your deadbolt useless, and then you have to buy a new one.I recently bought 5 of these for a house, and after rekeying them all to a single key, some of them didn't operate smoothly...you have to jiggle the key a bit. I'm worried about long-term lifespan and wondering how long it will be before the tenant calls me because he/she can't open the front door. 3Easy install, works as intended 3 days ago, I found myself locked out of my house and surprise, apparently these locks can't be picked due to having a gear mechanism instead of pins. The locksmith had to destroy my deadbolt in order to regain access to the house. They offered to replace the deadbolt and re-key it to match our existing keys, but being the cheap person I am I politely declined and said I'd take care of it myself. Much to my surprise, I was able to find the exact deadbolt I'd had before on Amazon for just $18. It arrived less than 24 hours after ordering and I had it installed AND rekeyed to match my existing key in less than 9 minutes. I couldn't be happier with the ease of installation and overall cost. 5Good affordable mid-grade locks. Love the smartkey feature I got these because I use the smartkey system throughout my home. While these aren't the strongest locks (they are grade 3, the lowest), they are more than sufficient for deterrent. Please note these are NOT the same ones you get at the big box stores. Those are the grade 1 locks, which are a bit more expensive. Having just replaced some old locks, the Grade 3 lack some of the cylinder protection compared to the grade 1 that I replaced.These were very easy to install and I had 4 locks on two doors installed in under an hour. If you need a basic lock and aren't terribly concerned about needing super high security, then this model will work just fine for you.
