Great solution to the design "flaw" of the classic spring ... Great solution to the design "flaw" of the classic spring bar. Bought this to go with other items in the Alteo line and they look great, and really brings everything together.Other reviewers mentioned that the side which rotates is set a little away from the wall - this is to prevent the metal from gouging your paint/wall when you rotate the bar up/down, this is NOT a defect. If anything, its a bonus. If it bothers you, return it, but it doesn't stick out that far from the wall. Can't speak to the long-term durability of the product as I've only just put in the bathroom, but so far so good. 5Easy to install Easy to install. Hardware included ensures that installation is sturdy. Item is secure against the wall. As others have said, the left mounting piece is about 2 mm away from the wall in order to allow the TP rod room to move up and down. To me this looks like an incomplete installation. Besides that flaw, I think that holder looks classy and clean. Hope this helps! 4Pretty, but --- how to rotate The look is simple and elegant. BUT.... Initially, our bathroom contractor hesitated to install this as the left hand part didn't appear to rotate. It took me a while to figure out the problem. The pivot part in the left hand side was screwed in too tightly. As a matter of fact, we had hard time to loosen that screw (even the power drill with max torque had hard time to loosen it , and the washer inside was distorted due to the tight screw). Please see my attached pictures for the problematic part. You have to loosen the screw inside the round plate so that the square post on the other side can rotate. There is no mentioning of this rotating part in the instruction at all!!! Is this intended to be a test for homeowner's problem solving skill? I was going to take two stars off from the review because of this technical difficulty. But then put back one star for the satisfaction of solving the problem. :) 4classy and functional At last! Relief from the tyranny of those worrisome little spring loaded tissue holders. This one is bold and shiny. It has to be large to accommodate the loading of new rolls. There is a small gap on one anchor so the moving arm will not scratch the surface of your wall or cabinet. [if it bothers you, choose a different holder] 5Great product... I read the reviews about this before i bought and i dont see where all the confusion is with installation. My install needed 1/8 and 5/16 drill bits. You ll need 1/4 if youre installing in to ceramic tile. 5Not recommended The fixture and design scream quality all of the way. The chrome finish is perfect and the fixture is quite robust. The mounting instructions include a template to help space the hidden disks that are screwed to the wall and used to hold the fixture in place. Miss the spacing of the disks by as little as a 1/16" and you have a major problem. The assembly will not rotate into the closed position and moving the second hole 1/16 or 1/8" is almost impossible.I would not buy this toilet paper holder again, but not for the mounting issues. In the real world, the assembly doesn't look like the picture. The inside dimension between the two brackets is approximately 7". A standard 4" wide roll of toilet paper looks funny. The first thing I did was make sure we didn't order a bracket for paper towels. Five star for quality, minus one star for potential mounting problems, minus two stars for size issues equals two stars and not recommended. In Kohler's defense, the matching towel rod and robe hook are quite handsome, but I would use the toilet paper post instead of this fixture next time. 2Advice on Installation. We spotted the Mistos version of this line at Home Depot. We haven't gone back to compare what the differences are, if any, but it is overall want we wanted. Some items, like this toilet paper holder is the same price but the towel rods - and depending on what finish you purchase - might be as much as 1/3rd the price at Orange or Blue. After reading all the reviews on Amazon, I knew what I was in store for in terms of installation. I even got the side with the swinging arm flush. Some advice:- FYI - Use the hex key provided to remove the base plate from the main part of the holder. The underside of the holder has a small hole where you insert the hex key.- I tried offsetting the distance between the holes on the template by 1mm, making it a bit closer. When I installed the second one I purchased, I used the provided template and it works perfectly. You just need to install methodically, measuring and adjusting one screw at a time.- Mark your holes based on the template, making sure that everything is level. If you feel that other reviewers are correct about the template, then move in 1mm or out 1mm - depends on whose advice you believe.- Use drill holes for screw guides for more precise placement and avoid splitting/cracking the wall.- Screw 1. Install the underlying plate of the swing arm side (left side). Mark both holes in this plate but, at this time, screw in the top screw only.- Screw 2. Install the underlying plate of the catch side (right side). Unlike above, mark only the top hole and screw in the top screw. You'll notice that the top hole is horizontally wider. This allows you to make small adjustments left and right.- Fit both the sides on and make sure that the bases are positioned properly so that the that the lever meets the catch. Because the base of the catch side can be adjusted left and right slightly, you can loosen the screw slightly, adjust, then tighten.- After you've positioned both sides to your satisfaction, mark the bottom holes, drill your guide and screw in the bottom screws. You might be all set at this point but, as others have pointed out, the left arm will not be flush with the wall. If this bothers you, as it did me, this is what you can do:- Remove the left side of the holder, leaving the base attached. Take a pencil and draw around the base plate to mark its exact position. Remove the base plate.- Using a 1 5/8 inch Forstner bit, drill a 1/8 inch recess (you can actually get away with less (about 2/3rd of the thickness of the plate) into the wall where the base plate can fit into. NOTE: This is an easier step if you're installing on the side of a vanity and drilling into wood. However, I also tried doing this on drywall and a Forstner bit can tear apart the wall if you go too fast. When I did it, the pivot was creating a messy hole in the center of the recess I was creating... so I stopped. I then proceeded to carve a recess using a Dremel. JUST BE VERY CAUTIOUS, otherwise you'll be doing some patchwork. I had to compound and paint were the recess shows underneath the installation.- Screw the base plate back into place and install the left side.At this point, everything should be flush. Mine sticks a little bit, since recessing it offsets the alignment slightly. This doesn't matter to me, since it's not a daily thing to replace the toilet paper roll (right?). Once the paper is on, who is going to notice?Hope that helps folks.Giving it 4 starts just for the extra effort to get it flush. 4How hard would good instructions be? This would get better reviews if the instructions were more clear. Don't touch the large screw in the center of each piece; you need to use the hex wrench to loosen the small pins under each piece to release the piece to install into the wall. You don't have to remove the pins. You can't "test" the unit; it has to be attached to the wall (or board) for it to work. It seems like it's defective because nothing moves, but that's not the case. Once you screw into the wall, it's fine. The template included for mine was exact. I also put one into the side of a cabinet - that works too. 4The product looks amazing and gives a really modern look! We were looking for a contemporary style toilet paper holder for our master and guest bathroom. We shopped around a little before we found this on Amazon. The product looks amazing and gives a really modern look. The holder is easy to install and changing toilet paper is easy unlike the traditional toilet paper holder. We had our handy man install it and he had no issues installing it over our tiled wall.I does not look over sized like some reviews state. Overall great looking product at a very reasonable price. We got 2 of these for our master and guest bathroom. 5Great but poor tolerances Installation went great but I ended up exchanging one of the three holders I purchased. These holders are designed to pivot on your wall and so they leave a small gap so you're not scuffing your wall every time you change a roll of toilet paper. I noticed that all three of my holders had a different amount of gap. The one with the worst gap I returned since it seemed to be a machining error.I'd give them 4-5 stars if it wasn't for the obvious differences in tolerances during manufacturing. 3
