Customer Reviews

You can't kill this drive!!! Outstanding usb drive the reads are awesome however the writes are a bit slow at 18mbps most of the time reads are always over 100mbps. The plastic cover thing just rip it off and throw it away it's cheap and gets in the way and makes this otherwise premium product appear budget. Also keep it formatted to either FAT32 or FAText otherwise your phone or tablet won't read it unless you have a windows phone or tablet. I plug this directly into a projector and watch movies and it runs flawless never gets warm. Only time it gets warm or hot is during writes so adding files will make this drive get really hot it's all aluminum so that is to be expected. Great drive though I'll definitely be buying another.*Addition I accidentally left this in my pants pocket and washed and dried my clothes and this drive still performing like I bought it absolutely outstanding product. 5Very small! Like other reviewers, I knew going in that this would only cap at one end, but I plan to leave it in my laptop about 90% of the time. My cloud has been acting up and I'm old school and still don't 100% trust everything on the cloud. If I was to transport this around, I'd be very wary of losing it as it is very small and again, with only one end capping off it could lead to debris or breakage for the unprotected end. My laptop didn't have any more USB-A ports available though so I needed a USB-C drive and this fits the bill. Plus I like that it is small enough I can leave it in the laptop. The capped end sticking up does sometimes get stuck on the lid when opening/shutting but it's not something I'd mark off for as again, I read the reviews and I expected it. I would think the seller could do from adding a small clip with a fabric tassle option to attach it to a keychain or something if desired and to fix the capping issue but for me, it'll do. 5... these a few months ago and have been very happy. Today I bought 2 of these a few months ago and have been very happy. Today, I came back to order 2 more and decided to leave a review while I'm at it.These are very inexpensive, very reliable, and, as other reviewers have mentioned, very *honest*. The write performance is not great, but they don't try to lie to you about it. But for the price they're unbeatable, and they work equally well with USB-C on my MacBook and USB-A 3 on my desktop PC. They are VERY small which can be both good and bad: they're easy to store, but also easy to lose.My only real complaint is that there's no good way to label them. They're so small that there's no real place to put a label, and since the cover is clear it's not easy to write on either. For the first two, I used a black marker to mark the inside of the plastic so I can tell the difference, but I really have no idea what I'm going to do for the next 2. 5Failed after 8 months, which was sad because I was quite happy with it -- when it worked. It worked perfectly well when it did work, but it failed after 8 months. I carried it daily on my key ring (with the included tether) but actually used it no more often than once per week. This past week it suddenly became unreadable and, when plugged in to USB-A, too hot to touch!I hate to leave a bad review for a product which initially did what it was supposed to do (speeds were comparable to my other low-end USB 3.0 drives), but there you are. Luckily, I did not have crucial data on it. (Well, it wasn't luck. I wouldn't keep crucial data on a drive like this.) I will try another product. 1So far so good, will update after several months use 64gig. Love this little guy. Only had a few weeks, so cannot address the longevity of the product (will come back in 6mo to update how its holding up). But I keep 2 backups of everything, so even if this guy fails (hopefully not) I still have another backup. Very small! If you have a iPhone and use a BulletTrain case (not sold on Amazon you'll have to google it, best case for iPhone 5/5s/6/6+/6s/6s+), it will fit in the 'secret compartment' of the case - BONUS! I use the USB side for my iMac, and the USB-C side on my Macbook. If you format it correctly, you can also use the USB side with Windoze and Chromebooks to access files on Mac/PC/Chrome. 3 pictures attached showing size comparison to Penny and Nickel, as well as the lanyard loop available if you want to string it to something (I just put a twist tie thru it to make it easier to see). But I keep this guy hidden away in my BulletTrain phone case. 5Write speed is a little slow I have been waiting for a USB type C flash drive that was reasonably priced to come out. The SanDisk 32Gb is $50 and this Kingston 32Gb is $17. When I saw it I snapped one up. I thought I should put it through a basic read write test and here are the results.Using 5Gb (67 files) writing to the flash drive from my fully SSD iMac took 5 minutes and 41 seconds. I thought this was a bit slow so I copied the same files to a Transcend Jet Flash 3.0 drive and that took 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Just for comparison I copied the same set of files to the Kingston and Transcend drives from the laptop and both drives scored amount the same as copying from the iMac. So the write performance of this drive is underwhelming.I placed the drive in my Macbook 12 and it took 43 seconds to transfer the files to the laptop. I used a USB to USB type C adaptor to copy the 5Gb of files from the Transcend drive to the laptop which took 48 seconds. The Kingston was slightly faster.Although the write speed of the Kingston drive is a bit slow it is way cheaper than the SanDisk and the read speed is on par with my USB 3.0 flash drive. All things considered I gave it 4 stars. 4GREAT drive. exactly as advertised, for good or ill. Small and useful!pros:standard usb 2/3 connector + usb c connector.very versatileREAD SPEEDOS installs from this drive are wicked fastsmall: i have this attached to a lanyard and it is very small and light. great addition to my bag of toolsaccurate specifications: read/write is dead on as advertised. i used this in a heavy read environment and it works GREAT. i wish more companies truthfully advertised a device's capabilities. i know where to NOT use the drive.future proof and legacy happy: usb C will likely dominate all future devices. small and fast.cons:WRITE SPEED: good grief, it is exactly as advertised. SLOW. i have generic usb 2 drives with better write speeds. kudos for accurate specifications and no stars docked. see abovedon't use this for lots of writes.i pull the usb C cover everytime i remove the drive. once inserted into a standard usb 2/3 port, it is nearly impossible to remove without pulling the cover for the usb c port. seems pretty sturdy, but i have to push it back down after i pull it out. i tried removing the cover, but there is even less material to grab from the usb c port alone.other:i have 2 already. i will buy more as needed for boot disks and other heavy read conditions. this drive has no peer for OS installs at this price. 100+mb/s reads for such a cheap price. 5Works Well For IT Pros (and regular people too) Build Quality: This device is fully metal with just the cap for the USB C cover being plastic. That being said that cover, after just a few day of use, started to become pretty lose and just have this drive on my keys and walking will cause the cap to uncover. I does have a little metal ring on the bottom of the drive so you can attach it to a key ring (see images).Does It Do What It Says?: Yes. This is a very good combo drive for those who have upgraded to a USB C laptop but still have to occasionally work with USB A devices. Also, the read write speeds are as advertised (see images) and at times can be a bit faster than advertised. The reason I gave this 4 stars is because I wish the drive was just a little bit larger. It being so small sometimes makes me feel like I am going to lose it. Also, the cap on this drive is ok but could do with some better engineering, but that is me being picky. 4Good Sequential Read Speed / Disappointing in Write I tested the Read/Write speeds of this Kingston Data Traveler Micro Duo USB 3C Flash Drive (DTDUO3C/32GB ) on two different computers, using the benchmark program 'CrystalDiskMark 3.01 x64':- When plugged in to an USB 2.0 port: Sequential Read=34.5MB/s, Write=12.8MB/s- When plugged in to an USB 3.0 port: Read=122.5MB/s, Write=19.6MB/s(See my uploaded screenshot for details)The product description claims "100MB/s Read, 15MB/s Write". So my measured results are actually better than advertised.Just for reference, my SanDisk Ultra Fit Series USB 3.0 Flash Drive gives a more impressive performance. Its Sequential Read is similar at 148.4MB/s, while its Sequential Write is twice as fast at 39.4MB/s. But it is not a duo-port drive. On the other hand, my SanDisk Ultra Micro USB 2.0 OTG Flash Drive is a duo-port drive, and its performance is much worse: Read=20.7MB/s, Write=9.6MB/s. The Sony Microvault USB Flash Drive is slightly better with Read=23.4MB/s, Write=12.9MB/s[Bottom Line]Although the Write speed of this Data Traveler Micro Duo is not as good as that of the Sandisk Ultra Fit, it is actually better than advertised, and faster than my other dual-port drives. So I still consider it a good product at its present low price.[Other Remarks]- The smaller port of this drive is an USB Type-C port, not a micro-USB port. If you are looking for the latter, consider the Data Traveler Micro Duo USB 3.0 Micro USB OTG drive instead.- The clear plastic cover over the smaller port feels flimsy. It slides out every time I unplug the drive from my computer. I hope it does not break off too soon.- The capacity of this '32GB' drive, according to my computer, is only 28.8GB. Now I know all about the difference between what is called one Giga-Byte for computer people (2 to the power 30 bytes) and for marketing people (1 billion bytes). But the discrepancy is too large here, as 28.8*2^30 = 30.9 billion bytes only. The Sony 32GB Microvault USB Flash Drive, for example, shows up as 30.2GB on my computer. 4don't forget your strap! I almost tossed the packaging away right after I took out the drive, but then I found a strap hidden inside the warranty slip (see picture). It's a great bonus for the tiny device. Don't forget yours. 5
