Customer Reviews

Secures my data as advertised Have bought a number of these drives from Amazon over the past few years. ALL have worked without any flaws. Sent them to family members with critical information and did not worry about compromise. Easy to set up and I have changed the passwords each year, no problem. I realize that a five star rating is my usual but if I have issues I usually get them solved via Amazon or the dealer so I dislike hurting a seller for what may be a one off. 5Great concept! Drive protective cover falls off and not key ring friendly This drive does what it says it's going to do and I love that feature about this product. It will back up my files to the could flawlessly and that cool. But for some reason, It's always working its way out of my key ring which is a mystery. Luckily I always find it in my pocket, also the protective cover that sheaths the USB port is weak and no long will stay on. The last thing that bothers me is if you go into your cloud and upload a file from your computer directly to your data traveler cloud folder it will not update it on your USB. Basically, you can only go one way USB to Cloud and never Cloud to USB. 3Be careful...I received a drive with an old rev # doesn't workHere's the deal...mine did not work on Win 7 or Yosemite, but worked on Win 8 drive. Contacted Kingston support, and they said this drive shipped with an old rev of the software, and if it's under warranty (it is - I received it today), they would replace with new rev. This normally would sound great, but I need the drive for something specific in 2 weeks, and what are the odds they're going to move that fast? I'd return to Amazon, but they'd just ship me the same outdated drive. In short, NOT happy. So, everyone says this drive works with their computer, but they drew the long straw and got the current rev. I got an old rev, so I'm out of luck. NOT HAPPY, Amazon (or Kingston).1Highly secure and easy to use. Great little device. The all metal case feels sturdy and the USB plug makes a connection every time. It's solid in your hand and feels slightly heavy for its size. I've had the drive for a month or so and it works very well. The security was easy to set up, and works well on all the versions of Windows I've tried it on -- Windows XP and the way up to Win10.As an IT person, I use this frequently -- I often need to place sensitive files on this device and feel secure that the 256bit AES encryption will protect them in the event it is lost or misplaced. (AES256 is approved by the NSA to secure classified documents) As long as you use a good, not easily guessed password, this should be more than enough to protect your files. Don't forget your password though -- you have 10 attempts to type the correct password, after which it will format the drive, destroying the contents. The only "negatives": I wish the security unlocker program would launch and unlock a bit faster, (takes about 5-10 secs on most relatively modern PCs). It would also be nice if there was a way to tell it to "trust" certain PCs. But these are in no way deal-breakers -- but perhaps something Kingston would add as an enhancement in future versions. 5Secure, sturdy, and fast.Purchased the 32GB USB stick, and overall, no disappointments. The USB 3.0 functionality is a great upgrade in both read/write capabilities, allowing you to move data fairly quickly between devices. The security on this drive is great, providing a strong degree of with its encryption software. And although it is a great security measure for highly sensitive data that you never want to have accessed by unauthorized parties, keep aware that this flash drive will wipe your data after too many consecutive failed attempts in entering the password. This can be a disastrous fail-safe for anyone having a bad typing day!It is well-built w/a solid feel to it. The cap sits firmly on the stick and can be pegged onto the back side when using, similar to a pen cap.5How to use itI stumbled a bit on how it works, and thought I would let some non-techie types know my experiences. When you click on the "This PC" or "My Computer" icon, it is listed as "DVD RW Drive". That initially threw me off, because I wasn't expecting this to be called a DVD. But it is easily recognizable with its red icon with the Kingston symbol. Once you click on that, the way you initiate everything is by clicking on the .exe file. That executes the password functionality. Once you are successfully in, it shows you the files on the drive. So another problem that I ran into was that my Word files were all "read only". I am used to just double clicking on a filename in order to open it. But here, you need to right click on the file name, and then select "edit" if you want to further edit a document. So maybe this was obvious to some, but it wasn't for me. Hope this helps someone out there. One last note, the drive tends to get warm/hot. I think this is normal.4Inexpensive data protection on the goThis is a good solution for people who need to carry personal data outside their computer to public places and are looking for an easy way to prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing that data. There are pricier options like keypad operated USB sticks that tout 'military' grade encryption, and physical casings that will destroy the device if someone tries to open it. Since these types of devices use a lithium battery, I wondered what would happen to your data if the battery eventually dies...Anyway, I don't need anything that heavy duty, so I opted for this Kingston USB stick. It runs a built-in password verification program when you plug it into a computer's USB port - the first time you use it, you set up your password. Simple, and works like a charm.Every time you subsequently plug this USB stick into your computer, it runs the program, and prompts you for the password. If someone tries repeatedly to access it without the correct password, the device will reformat itself after the 10th failed attempt. You can also easily change the password any time you want. All this is plenty enough protection for my needs. This stick also has an activity light, and the metal casing gives it a good bit of heft, so you're not as likely to loose it in a pocket.I did not check out the optional cloud storage, and I am using this on PCs (apparently it can be finicky on Macs). The only reason I knocked off one star is because like most USB sticks, you get an adjusted amount of usable space from the advertised capacity (I got the "16Gb" size, but somehow there's only around 14Gb usable. Whatever.) Plus, the metal case does get pretty warm when in use, so longevity remains to be seen. I will update my review if problems arise. :)4Safe USB for transporting important documentsI like to use a USB stick to sync my important documents between my desktop PC, and both PC and Macs laptops. But it would be a disaster if anyone got hold of the data. This USB drive is a bit complex because everytime you insert it, it will only expose a generic public drive with an application to decrypt the rest. Windows isn't always great about running that app, so you may have to manually launch it. But then it's a straightforward matter of giving it a password the first time, and supplying that password on future uses. After giving the password a second USB drive appears on your computer with the full decrypted volume. This is superior to software solutions because it's fast due to hardware encryption, and more importantly, you can access the decrypted volume as a drive to all tools. I use a tool called TREECOMP (PC and Mac) which will compare two directories and allow you to sync them up, and it works great with this drive after you give the password.I've used a MemoryMaster USB stick in the past which actually had buttons and lights on it but this is superior because it had a battery in it and eventually the battery died and made the USB unaccessible. I don't think this one has a battery in it.5Good Backup & Identity Protection This device was recommended by our computer club to securely store sensitive personal data files. It's easy to travel with & if lost (because of it's password protection features) no one would be able to access any of the data on the drive. I now use this device for all my working financial & data files.I back up the files from this USB drive to the Cloud and my desktop, but the backup files have been encrypted with AxCrypt. This provides security for the backups & allows me to recover my data in the event the drive is lost or damaged. 5MAC users should not buy thisRight out of the box this device did not function with the latest (as of June 27) version of the MAC OS. I contacted support. They told me that an update would be available sometime in August. In August they said the release would be available in Sept, Their update is not here as of 9/12/19. Meantime MAC has updated their OS again. (Incidentally, the tech support chat operator explicitly said that Kingston is a "PC centric company". And how's this for a kicker? When you do install an updated driver it reformats the drive so you have to be careful back it up before applying any updates. The Bottom line - even if they provide the update necessary to work with MAC, they will not keep up with the MAC updates and at some point they will stop supporting this drive altogether so you have to buy a new one. Has already happened to me with a previous purchase. I've not had this kind of difficulty with any other secure drive. I hope I can get some use out of this one for a while, knowing full well I will need to migrate to another device eventually.1For compatibility with Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11, download and run Update Utility from the KIngston website. UPDATE for Mac OS X users: The Kingston website has an update utility to make certain Kingston devices compatible with OS X El Capitan 10.11. I downloaded the file and executed it on a borrowed Windows machine to update the flash drive. It runs very fast.IMPORTANT:#1 Backup data on the device before executing the utility. The utility will reformat your device and wipe out your data.#2 Please note that the update utility needs to be performed on a Windows machine. If you don't have a Windows PC, you'll have to borrow one. However, the result is that the updated device will be compatible on OS X El Capitan. I am currently on Yosemite, but wanted to update the device before upgrading to El Capitan. I can confirm the updated device is also compatible with Yosemite. At some point I will upgrade to El Capitan, but can't confirm the updated device work on that version.BTW, I do not have any financial interest in Kingston... unfortunately. Just sharing this tip to the community. After reading reviews about the issue, I called Kingston who told me about the utlity. I can say that customer support was good. Although this was somewhat inconvenient, I'm satisfied with the end result and the fact that the manufacturer provided a solution at all.------------Here's some text from their website:"The changes Apple made in MacOS 10.11 disabled the functionality of our secure USB drives. It enables you to create a password. Because it is hardware encryption, it is more secure than software encryption. This is my understanding, but I am no expert on this topic. In general, it works well, but with my Mac OS X, I need to navigate to find and launch the executable that opens the password dialog. I believe on some platforms/machines, the password dialog launches automatically. Also, the device stopped showing up in Finder so I need to open the device from my Desktop. These problems may be isolated to my machine/OS X so your mileage may vary. (Please add a comment if you know the problem.) Other than these inconveniences, it works OK and is worth the added security.PROS:- Adds security- Quality and esthetics look goodCONS:- Does not seem 100% compatible with OS X (at least on my machine) 4Works as Expected - AlmostI purchased this as I wanted a secure USB drive to keep confidential files I need to have readily available. There are a few nuances to be aware of which I am not sure are consistent with all users, all systems. On my laptop the drive first shows up as a DVD RW Drive when the thumb drive is mounted and no application launches. I like this but it fooled me at first as I didn't think the drive was mounted. When you open the "DVD" volume there is an app entitled DTLplus_Launcher. Again, on my laptop this does not automatically run. Double click and you can set up the security on your drive and from then on it is also necessary to run this app in order to enter the password for unlocking the encrypted drive. Once you enter the password the full 32GB thumb drive will show up as a new drive letter. I have also heard that on some machines the encrypted drive will not mount if you don't have two consecutive drive letters available but I have not had that issue. I have found that the drive will always automatically lock when your system goes into hibernate or sleep mode, or if the drive is removed while it was in an unlocked state - all of which I like. I have given this device 4 stars instead of 5 because it comes with no printed directions - I had to go online to figure out how to properly use it. Note - if you realize that the device shows up as a DVD drive there is a PDF users manual stored on that unencrypted partition of the device.4Does not work on some PCsBought this and it worked great for a few months. The one day after two months, clicked on the program, and got error message: "A problem has caused this program to stop functioning." No access to files. Fortunately I'm only using it for backups, no data lost. I called technical support, and they sent me a new identical unit.Same problem. Program crashes before I can do anything with it, locking away files. Turns out these same devices work fine on other PCs at work (Windows 7 and 10). Fault must lie somewhere on my main PC (Windows 7), which otherwise works fine. Still, that's where I need it to work. If only there were some way to update the software on the thing (there is an update for Macs, not for Windows).2Good quality flash drive, but bad software that needs to be fixed before the product is sold again. I use this flash drive to hold most of my passwords for multiple local accounts and online resources. The build quality is superb and feels like stainless steel that's wrapped around a plastic cover to prevent damage when falling or getting bumped into when connected. This works like any other flash drive, but I purchased this due to the software that is provided with the drive. I have found that initially the software works fine and allows your drive to be password protected and encrypted. However I've noticed after the first month the software is barely functional now on any computer I put th flash drive in. The software either crashes when booted or freezes when I try to launch it again. It seems the only fix was to reinstall the product which required me to contact Kingston and have them send me an updated firmware for the drive. This seemed to fix the issue, but only time will tell. Overall, good product. 4Great transfer speeds, good first impression. As with all new flash drives I get, I do a read and write test to the drive to make sure the drive is functioning properly and I didn't get a counterfeit or defect. So far, this drive works great as you can see from my tests on a USB 3.0 port, I was able to get 137.73 Mb/s read speeds and 23.41 MB/s write speeds. This was done using a flash drive checking tool and I ran 3 full write and read cycles. The software screenshot shows I only ran 1 because I accidentally closed out the results of the first 2 tests, but they gave almost the same results as this 3rd test. There was absolutely no write errors in my testing. This is actually faster than most of my other USB 2.0 flash drives which is expected since this is USB 3.0. While the write speed is not that fast, this is a good speed for the price you are buying this flash drive at. I found that when writing lots of data for a long time, the flash drive does kind of get warm to the point where I feel it might start to overheat. I actually got around this issue by sticking on a USB fan (ARCTIC Breeze Mobile, USB-Powered 92mm Portable Fan, Portable Cooling Solution, Quiet Fan, Mini USB Fan, Mini Gooseneck Fan for laptop and PC - White). Maybe it is a little bit overkill, but I do get paranoid pretty easily. You can see my set up in my photo of my flash drive. The USB stick is secure, although I wish the drive would stop asking me about USB to Cloud. Clicking decline makes the software put a text file in the drive storage itself which takes up room and also looks horrible. You could mark the file has "hidden" but I have my computer display all hidden files because of some of the work I do so the "hidden" flag on a file doesn't do anything. I wish Kingston just never included that or at least offered a firmware update that removes the functionality. I bought this encrypted flash drive to encrypt my stuff, not to share them on the internet where it could be potentially hacked. As for unlocking the flash drive, it does take a few seconds for the unlocking software to start up like 5-10 seconds. It isn't fast, but once you type in the correct password, it mounts your encrypted partition fast. Also I found out that my drive does not need 2 consecutive drive letters to mount. I'm not sure if Windows fixed this issue or if Kingston fixed it, but that is no longer required. When you first get the flash drive, I recommend you go to the Kingston website and get the Mac update for the flash drive to insure that this drive can be used on a Mac in the future. This firmware update will wipe your drive, so I recommend you do this immediately after buying this drive so you don't have to mess with it at a later date. One last thing I love about this drive is how the USB protective cap can be capped on the other end of the drive sort of like a pen cap. This is good feature because the USB protective cap is one of the things people tend to loose. This is a great design feature. You can see this feature in action in my photo.Due to the few quirks of this device, I decided to take 2 stars away on my review. The USB to Cloud thing is one of the major downsides to this flash drive. If Kingston releases an update that gets rid of this, I may up my rating, but as of right now, it stays at 3.3Promises, promisesUnfortunately this does not work with MacOS Catalina (32 bit vs 64 bit as I understand it) -- Kingston keeps promising a software upgrade to 64 bit but it has not appeared (and I'm on their email notification list). Very disappointed in their treatment to Apple users. Would not purchase again.Update: Kingston has finally released a 64 bit update for the device, but the update can only be done on a Windows machine. Still disappointed with their lack of their overall support for MacOS.1
