Customer Reviews

Just the right size for my needs I recently got a dog and started walking him 5-10 miles a day. Sometimes we stop for lunch where I like to read while my four-legged buddy enjoys a treat and toy. I needed something to carry a few thing without being overly bulky or uncomfortable. Buying the right backpack was important to me. I ve obsessed over this and held off on buying one for months because the exact size was critical. It needed to be big enough to hold up to a 13 laptop/tablet, a book, glasses, dog treats, and a few other accessories but not much bigger. I was surprised to see how few backpacks fit within this narrow range. I found messenger bags and slings that were the right size but wanted maximum comfort too; being balanced on my back was a must so that ruled them out. When I searched for small backpacks , the results would bring up bags that either didn t have padded laptop compartments, held much bigger laptops, or were pink with Hello Kitty written on them. When I discovered the Kensington bag it immediately caught my attention. It seemed to be the right size, nicely padded straps, a sensible number of compartments that are properly sized, and well padded. My biggest reservation was reports about bad zippers but everything else sounded just right so I ordered it.I couldn t be happier. The size is perfect. It can hold an iPad 12.9 in the laptop area, a smaller iPad in the second padded compartment, a notebook of paper and a few other things in the main compartment ( I carry a collapsible dog dish and treats there too). The smaller compartments are well sized also. The top compartment is made for a phone but there s room for a lot more than just that. The lower compartment can hold electronic accessories, pens, etc..The two features I think could be improved are the bottle holder and the zipper (but not for the reason others have stated). I doubt that I ll use the bottle holder. It s small and not very convenient. It may be handy for very small bottles but nothing substantial. I haven t had a problem with the zipper snagging as others have reported and I m pretty careless with zippers. What I noticed though is the zipper handles have a tendency to stick sideways in their rings. It s as if the handle receiver is just a little small for the handle. Not a deal breaker but it takes a second to straighten it out before zip-unzipping.If you re looking for a backpack that will hold a small laptop safely as well as a few other things without being so big that you look like you re hiking to the summit at Everest, this is a great choice. It is well made, well thought out, comfortable, and appropriately attractive for men and women. 5Exactly what this female grad student was looking for! *Edit, January 2018I am still loving this bag! I ve used it as my everyday backpack as a high school teacher for the past few years, and still find it absolutely perfect for my needs. However, a few weeks ago I messed up - I tried to squeeze too much in the bag (it is definitely a small backpack, which is what I love most about it) and the zipper seam ripped. But come on...after years of constant use, I just can t be upset. And really, it was my fault. Everything else about the bag is still holding up beautifully. And I can t say enough about how much I love the size. Perfect for carrying a laptop, tablet, and a small stack of grading. No extra space means I stay organized and only carry what I need. I ll honestly probably buy another of these if I can t get the zipper fixed on this one. See my original review below for a full description of the backpack - I still agree with every word! Even though I sound like I was paid to write this, I swear I wasn t.Original review, August 2013Here's the deal: finding a backpack online is hard. If you're like me, you spend hours looking at potential purchases, agonizing over the fact that you can't see, hold, or try out what you're considering spending money on. Since I know how difficult it is to find a backpack online, and because I'm so pleased with this product, I'm going to try to give a very comprehensive review. Note that I am a female grad student who uses this bag to carry an ultrabook, iPad, small paperback philosophy texts, and a notebook or two to and from campus every day. With that said, here goes:The price and quality:I was a little apprehensive about the price of the Triple Trek, since the other backpacks I was considering (Case Logic 15", Belkin Slim, and Belkin Core mainly) were all $25-40. While it may not be a lot to many, to someone in grad school $58 is a lot to spend on a backpack. In my opinion, though, it was worth the price. The backpack is both lightweight and sturdy-feeling, and appears to be of good quality. The padding is very good, and the weight distribution is fantastic. I wouldn't pay too much more than what I did for this bag, but that may just be because I'm cheap. All in all, I think it's a good price, and if you can find it for less, even better! The appearance:I wasn't quite sure what to expect here. The other reviews said it looked great, but the pictures are just not good quality. The bag sorta looked like fake leather to me, but I decided to believe the other reviewers when they said it looked good. They were right! I really like the look of the bag. The material is not fake leather but is that woven nylon material that many backpacks are made of. The black zippers, zipper pulls, and logo give the back a really sleek look, as does the size. And speaking of the size...The size:This is honestly my favorite part about the bag. I absolutely LOVE the size of it! I'm a 5' 5" woman, so it's not like I'm super tiny. But even so, I'm so sick of backpacks that are so long that they cover my butt! I tighten the straps as much as possible, but the bags are always still so long. Not only is this uncomfortable (a backpack should lay flat along your back), but it looks silly and is just a waste of space! I spent hours looking on Amazon and other places, trying to find a backpack that was roughly the length of, you know, my back. And here, I finally found one. When I saw that the Triple Trek was only 14" compared to 18" on almost all of the other bags I was looking at, I knew I had to at least give it a shot. And I am so happy I did! Ladies, if you've been looking for a small backpack (that you don't need to carry giant textbooks with), please try this one!The compartments:The laptop pocket perfectly fits my ultrabook in its envelope-style case, so I'm certain it would fit a non-ultrabook that's not in a case. The tablet pocket also perfectly fits my iPad in its smart case, and would probably fit one in a slightly larger case as well (an Otterbox would definitely be a stretch). These two pockets are very nicely padded and I don't feel the need to gingerly set the bag down every time. The space between the two padded pockets inside the main compartment is perfect for what I was looking to carry, which is just a couple paperback books, a planner, and a notebook. To give you a size reference, I'd say you could squeeze (and I mean squeeeeze) 2 3-subject notebooks in there, and 3 of those if you don't have a laptop or tablet in at the time. The front pocket has a couple spots for pens, plus another small pockets and a small mesh pocket. In front of these you could fit another paperback if you needed to. There's also a clip to attach keys in this front pocket. The top pocket is soft and would be perfect for a cell phone or game device, and has the headphone pass-through. The hidden water bottle pocket on the side is just genius; it's there when you need it, but tucks away when you don't to keep the bag looking neat and streamlined. I'd imagine you could shove a few pens in that pocket as well, if you never plan to use the mesh water bottle holder. Finally, there's also a hidden on the right side of the bag right next to your back. It's about 8" or so, is very flat, and is held closed by a 3" strip of Velcro. I actually don't know what I'd put in that pocket, but its so flat and inconspicuous that it doesn't detract from the bag whatsoever even if it's never used. I imagine that if you use the bag as a carry-on that this would be the perfect place for a passport and boarding pass, as it is very easy to access. Conclusion:I love this bag! After so long searching for the perfect backpack, I think I can say that I found it! I would absolutely recommend this bag, especially to ladies. It's perfect for school or business, as long as you travel light. 5Wanted to like this bag, but there were problems out of the gate. EDITED 5/1/2017 I bought this bag as a small pack intended for a cruise and then later for day to day commuting. While I enjoyed the very svelte size of this bag and enough pockets to accommodate just the basics and a small laptop, it proved not be a very sturdy bag. After three weeks of use (after initial receipt of product) the seams started to fray along one of the arms and two other locations. This bag has not had any major use and only washed once.I really like the profile of the bag as it is professional, yet portable (something traditional briefcases just don't have). However, the quick unraveling of a $50+ bag isn't acceptable. Please consider this before purchasing this bag.EDIT -After a good number of months from use, washings, Gorilla glue and heavy duty stitch jobs from my mother in law (she's *amazing* with a needle and thread) this bag is still good looking (ish). I might have paid a bit more for water resistance (doesn't shed water from the outer shell very well). The travel 'footie' at the bottom back for sliding over the handle of most extended handle luggage is a nice touch I didn't mention before, but its usefulness is offset by the lack of a top stabilizing strap towards the top. To be fair, this might change the size of the bag a bit but could have been engineered somehow (I am neither an engineer nor laptop bag specialist). If you have wider shoulders or wear bulkier outer jackets you may want to skip this back and look for one with more strap for the arms. With a simple shirt and not too much in it, it's a great and comfortable bag. Add a suit or jacket, topcoat or anything thicker and you may have issues putting it on. I generally wear a 44 in a men's suit jacket for reference.I have upgraded the review to 3 stars for the current 3Best Bag of the Year - Quality, Utility and Style Best Bag of the Year?? Definitely a keeper. Low profile off the back, all available room inside is accessible. Only corny feature is James Bond Hidden Zipper Pocket that will only fit a small plastic bottle. The main compartment is divided into three sections, two of them micro fiber fleece lined. The zippers are nylon and the shiny steel grey finger grips are an attractive detail. The pocket on the strap side is for the laptop and its snug against your (padded) back, with a velcro strap closure to boot, the center, an expandable bag floor to zipper top cavern, and the outside another velcro strap for a pad. There are two other outside pockets, other than that silly waterbottle, the top one fleece lined with a place to string your headset through, if you are so inclined, and a flap that opens up to the usual wallet, key, pens storage that I rarely use, I keep that stuff in my pockets! It is intended for the slimmest of laptops and my Dell Inspiron would fit only without its sleeve, in a seam stretching tight fit. My iPad 2 with case flops around in the opposing pocket. So one velcro strap barely reaches across my 'oversized' Dell laptop, while the iPad strap is as tight as possible and it flops around in the pocket. Maybe this is really for the Mac machines?I will probably carry the laptop in the main compartment in a sleeve and use the padded laptop pocket for power brick and cables. I puit my Anker Micro Mouse in the fleece line pocket. It's very stylish when stuffed and looks good on too.The only thing is the grab through handle, between the straps, is made for a smaller hand than mine. Four fingers were crunched up, so maybe three. All in all a very good small back pack that you can slip over one shoulder (and not look like a 7th grader), or carry like a bag into a meeting. 5Ripped stitching in under a month! Terrible build quality. Less than 2 months old and 3" section of stitching failed on one strap.Edit: Left a 1 star review on Kensington's website but and I quote, "Our staff has read your review and values your contribution even though it did not meet all our website guidelines. Thanks for sharing, and we hope to publish next time!" I met every guideline on their site and left doubly disappointed that instead of trying to make it right they simply covered it up.Customer service is as bad as their sewing quality, seriously keep shopping. 1One star :( Have had this backpack for 6 months. Backpack is falling apart near the zippers. I paid $60 for this, which was way to much as now this pack is like $25. Please see photo. Daily use. Carried a laptop, so wasn't too rough on it. I do not recommend. I usually purchase highly rated products on Amazon but this backpack was not one. It could have just been mine but I don't know about that. 1Fantastic for minimalist student with small laptop If you don't carry much to class/work besides a small laptop and few other items, this bag will be perfect for you! I used a very large backpack from high school that was simply overkill for my needs in college, so I decided to downsize. I usually only carry a small laptop, a large planner, a small collection of writing utensils, a calculator, and various accessories and I occasionally take a textbook to class. Everything is nice and snug, but not cramped! Both the laptop and tablet slots are made with a scratch-free material I couldn't mind having a pillow case made from. The tablet slot is not large enough to accommodate the width of of my 11.6" laptop, but I wouldn't expect it to. The tablet slot is large enough to fit a reading book or even a small textbook comfortably so that the pages don't get creased. Between the two slots is enough room for my large planner and a large textbook, or my large planner and up to two small/medium textbooks. The top accessory pouch is surprisingly large and is made from the same scratch-free material the laptop and tablet slots are made with. The bottom writing utensil pouch is large enough for a small collection of writing supplies, a standard calculator, and a few other items stored at the bottom outside a pocket.I cannot yet review the durability of the bag, but it feels sturdy enough for a bag $50. The straps are connect at the top through the handle, which I think would improve the life of the straps. The material feels semi-water-resistant, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in the rain for too long with it while riding my bike.My only complaints are that the straps are mildly uncomfortable under heavier loads and that the hidden water bottle pouch only accommodates small diameter water bottles about the size of a spray-paint can, but slightly larger can be squeezed in. Overall, I highly recommend this bag to anyone wanting to minimize how much they carry with them everyday without compromising too much. 4I should have read the reviews!! I received the bag at the end of July. It was a great size, wonderful for airline traveling also to and from the office daily with a Lenovo X240. I primarily used it for airline traveling for carrying both my 13" MacBook pro, a Lenovo X240, a few USB cables, and a mouse. The zip out bottle holder is great and small pockets are good for the little items such as cellphone chargers, portable battery backups, USB drives, etc. After about month of usage the zipper in the main compartment started messing up, it would not close properly when it reached the headphone pass-through slot so there was allot of zipping back and forth to get it closed properly. Now, fast-forward 3 months and the stitching in one of the shoulder straps is starting to tear. Good looking bag, just don't expect it to last more than 3 months.Edit: 9/5/2016So I got sick and tired of this expensive bag looking like a cheap knockoff and decided to call their customer support due to the 3 year warranty on 3/2/2016. Within 24 hours they called me back to get more info and set up a claim online. Same day I submitted the requested information, photos of the damage, the serial number of the backpack located on the tag inside the main compartment and the receipt. Within 24 hours they processed it and shipped out a new backpack which I received about 5 days later. It is now 6 months later ive been using the new backpack same as the one before it and it still looks brand new fresh out of the box. It has been through the airport 4 times already and still use it as my daily back and forth laptop bag to and from the office. I changed the review from a 1 star to a 3 star due to the positive outcome and the replacement is holding up after 6 months. When it breaks ill update this review again. 32 of the zipper tracks came completely a part from the fabric which revealed its poor quality. I contacted customer support to r I purchased this backpack just over a year ago. 2 of the zipper tracks came completely a part from the fabric which revealed its poor quality. I contacted customer support to replace the backpack, which was a terrible experience. I sent them pictures of the backpack and 3 versions of the invoice just like they requested. Every time they responded that "they could not clearly see" when I had purchased the item. Which is a lame excuse because it was very clear in all three versions. Finally after 1 week of back and forth emails and a few phone calls they pretty rudely made it clear that they were not replacing my backpack, (Which now I am thankful for because I don't want another backpack from them now anyway). I am disappointed because I was hoping that Kensington would be a company that stood behind their products. Heed this warning, do not purchase Kensington products. 1Great looking backpack, zipper has issues. *** Update on this review after few months of owning and using this backpack ***I am sorry to say, I definitely can not recommend this backpack. Save your money and buy something else instead. It does look good, but what's the use of good looks of the backpack is un-usable? After just a few months, ALL of the zippers are having problems. I can't open or close the zippers without issues. I was hoping this backpack at least lasts a year, being that it is cheap and a year would at least been not been terrible for this price. But I am already in the market looking for something else. It is embarrassing to try to take something out or put something in the backpack, and have the zipper not open or close at all and get stuck half-way in the middle. You then have to try to go back and forth a bunch of times, hoping to get it to open/close, and even then, the zipper does not line-up right, which means the next time, it will do the same again. This is not due to abuse of the backpack. I am very careful and have only used it for a light Dell laptop as mentioned in my original post. The backback zippers are just cheap and not designed for daily use. Disappointing.--------------------The Kensington Triple Trek Slim backpack looks great, and holds a lot for its small size. I have my small Dell XPS 13, my iPad mini a notebook, all the cables and chargers I have, and bunch of other small things in this and it looks super slim and appears to still be empty. Unfortunately however, after just a couple of uses, the zipper started to get stuck in one place. I can always get it to still close, but it bugs me that I always have to go back and forth a few times with the zipper to get it to pass that one spot. Others have also complained about the main zipper, so I knew this could be a problem before I got the bag, but was hoping Kensington has fixed the zipper issues by now. 1
