Customer Reviews

Updated - working well for now. Hoping for the best. I really wanted to like this product. At first it did exactly what I wanted it to do. The HDMI out went to my projector, the audio went to my Sonos sound bar, and the 5 HDMI in went to my PS4, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV, Chromecast, and one for SNES. It worked flawlessly for about a month. Set on automatic the sound was perfect and picture great. After about a month the picture would intermittently get glitchy. At first I thought it may have been a setting on my projector - but after playing with the projector the glitching never went away. Mind you, the projector is a brand new high end model. At two months this Port Switch started having issues with things plugged into all HDMI in with exception of HDMI 1. Now, it will not even recognize HDMI one. No other settings have been changed. It lasted in total only 4 months.Edit:I received a replacement for this product within the last month. So far so good. No issues. I like that the company offered a replacement that was new and without fuss. I'm not sure what happened with the first switch but I am hoping that it will not fail again, as I really liked it prior to having issues. Will update if anything goes wrong. But for now I am satisfied. 4worked perfect first 2 months, 2nd unit same problem they sent When I first installed this product it worked awesome a few months later device number two Port stopped working I had to move it over to Port 5 :( for the price I'm very disappointedin quality now. UPDATE: THE SELLER CONTACTED ME DIRECTLY AND OFFERED A REPLACEMENT UNIT AT NO COST AND SENT IT OUT QUICKLY. CONNECT TO THE NEW DEVICE PORT TWO STARTED WORKING FINE ON OUR XBOX 360, THEN LATER THAT WEEK. BACK TO SAME PROBLEM AGAIN: ( SO WE MOVED THE XBOX360 TO CHANNEL/PORT 5 AGAIN AS WE DID ON THE ORIGINAL DEVICE AND NOW IT'S WORKING WE JUST CAN'T USE PORT TWO. WE TRIED SECOND UNIT SAME PROBLEM.2Nd UPDATE , I TRIED TO GIVE THERE SECOND UNIT ANOTHER CHANCE WHEN I MOVED THE XBOX 360 FROM CHANNEL/ PORT 2 TO 5 WE HOOKED UP THE PS4 IN CHANNEL 2 WORKED FOR ABOUT 24 HOURS AND THE SAME THING AS THE XBOX 360 DID IN CHANNEL/PORT 2. I CAN NOW SAY I GAVE THEM THE BEST CHANCE I COULD, VERIFIED IT WAS NOT THE DEVICE IT'S DEFINITELY THE HDMI SWITCH DEFECT SECOND UNIT. WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER ONE!!! SORRY BUT IT'S NOT WORKING EITHER ON CHANNEL/PORT 2.AFTER 2 BOXES STILL HAVING ISSUES NOT GOOD QUALITY PRODUCT FOR THE MONEY WONT PAY OVER $20 FOR THIS POOR QUALITY. 1Perfect for use with soundbars and older receivers I got this to clean up the mess of connections between HDMI devices and my older surround sound receiver that only has optical inputs. It does the job perfectly, taking the sound from all HDMI sources and providing it to the receiver via a S/PDIF optical cable. However, I noticed that the switch I got has a different configuration from what's shown on the Amazon site. It has the optical output and 2 RCA stereo connectors on the front of the box, not a 3.5mm stereo jack and S/PDIF on the back as in the description and photos on the Amazon site. I contacted J-Tech on this and got a very prompt response saying that I had the new model of this switch. Amazon has both in stock, and they're not changing the images and description until the old stock is depleted. If you order this, make sure you get the one you're expecting or understand it might look different.I took a star off because hanging audio connections off the front of the box is not ideal in my view, but I added the star back because of the excellent support response. If you get the new box, you might consider getting one of the new thin TOSLINK cables to minimize the visual impact of the front connection.I use a Harmony remote to control all the devices, and, although this switch is in the Harmony database, their codes don't work. I suspect that too is due to the new version I got. You'll need to put the Harmony remote in Learn mode and use the remote included with the switch to teach it the correct commands. Easy enough to do because commands are few. Once that's done, it all works perfectly.Another caveat is that if you have any Roku device other than Roku Ultra, you may not get surround sound because the lesser Roku devices do not have decoders/transcoders for the Dolby Digital Plus format used by many streaming services such as Netflix. You'll still get sound via the optical cable, but it will be stereo only. This is a limitation of the Roku devices, not of the switch, since you cannot pass DD+ over S/PDIF. My understanding is that Roku Ultra includes the decoder/transcoder for DD+, so you should be able to get full 5.1 surround from that, at least based on what I've read. Apple TV 3 works fine.Overall, this switch is a great way to extend the life of an older surround sound receiver and neatly connect all of your HDMI gear. I am very happy with it. 5Had issues with first switch, but replacement worked great. No tech support. My first switch had issues and I ended up returning it for exchange. The replacement has worked perfectly, but the lack of tech support warranted the 4-star rating. The first one would periodically lock up and stop responding to input from the remote and sometimes would just shut down completely. When I contacted J-Tech "Tech Support" I provided all the diagnostic info I could (connected devices, cabling, etc.) and was disappointed to find that all they had to say about it was "Sorry for the issues, we recommend you return it." So there appears to be basically no tech support. After trying to diagnose it myself and failing to make any difference, I decided to go ahead and swap it and hope for the best. Others have mentioned that they received a different replacement box and it cured their problems. Fortunately for me I did receive a slightly different replacement switch with a completely different remote. This one has been up for a few days and working flawlessly. The attached photo shows the old vs. new remotes (old on the left, new on the right). If you have the one with the flat buttons and no SPDIF button you have the one I had issues with (I assume it's an older design). If you have that one and have issues, swap it out and hope you get the new design. I didn't take photos of the switches because they essentially look identical except for the way the labels are printed. If not for the issues with the first one, this is a 5-star device all the way. The optical output has allowed me to keep my dated but once top-of-the-line Onkyo home theater receiver working with all my new devices even though it doesn't switch HDMI. If I were to purchase today's equivalent receiver with the HDMI switching I'd be out $700+. 4Finally!!!! As unbelievable as it may sound I have trying and returning audio extracting HDMI switches via Amazon since 2010. What seemed like a simple (and likely common) goal kept ending in 'FAIL after FAIL'. A word about my scenario for context:Bose powered Cinemate system (i.e. no Amp/receiver needed)Single HDMI 1.4 run to TV (35' high quality cable in wall)Multiple sourcesI had found a simple non powered HDMI switch that worked but I was still changing audio manually with another switch. Not elegant - hated it but lived with it after auditioning several aforementioned failed Audio Extracting HDMI switches. When ROKU dumped audio out on their 3 and I needed to upgrade to the 3 to capitalize on 5ghz WiFi I was forced back into my search. Another few failed attempts then I just started buying them two at at time from Amazon figuring 'one of these has to work'. This is the one that worked. Perfect signal quality, auto switch feature, full IR functionality (working fine with my IR repeaters and mapped programmable remote).Attaching some before and after pics so you can visualize the rats nest this eliminated - enough said. Supplemented with some wife an house guest (i.e. infrequent user) proof source labels - done and done. A positive end to my personal saga lol. 5Definitely Underpowered with a Few Design Shortcomings! ***Edit***12.28.17***I'm happy to write that J-Tech Digital contacted me. After a bit of conversation, they concluded I might have a defective unit and agreed to send a replacement. It arrived and I plugged it in...works great! All the issues with the original unit are gone.--But why 4 stars?--This is a bit delicate. I purchased this unit, primarily, to allow my HDMI sources to run through a mad series of audio components (I have a DBX Compressor/Gate & Behringer Audio Exciter hooked into my audio system...for, reasons). The RCA outputs and Audio Splitting capabilities were important to me.The new unit uses a mini-headphone plug for its "audio out", rather than the RCA outputs of the original...this kind of sucks for me. I like minimizing the number of connectors I'm running through. A minor thing, I know...but it matters to me. Otherwise, the replacement unit is great!**********This has been running for over a month...so here's my sad conclusion.I have my Xfinity, Roku, Xbox and NAS feeding into this box. From it I have the RCA outputs connected to an audio processor, then to my amplifier;and the HDMI output running to my TV.Unfortunately, this little box has a difficult time keeping up.*Switching often results in a black screen (no signal) for several seconds. - My NAS often never gets a signal unless I unplug the inputs/output and plug them back in*Jumpy audio for several seconds*NAS seems to cause a loss of resolution information, making the screen jump*Sometimes it simply stops responding, forcing the unplug/wait/plug in proceedureThis was a stopgap until I got a new TV (with proper audio outputs!), but if I have to get a new Switch/Extractor, might as well just go ahead and get a new TV! 4Cannot be more pleased! Perfect fix to get 5.1 sound to Sonos Playbar I ordered this item because of my Sonos system. The standard Sonos setup is to route all the HDMI to the TV, then use the optical cable out. However, my TV was only capable of passing through 2 channel stereo, not 5.1 surround. After spending money on the whole Sonos playbar and other speakers, I wanted to ensure that I was getting a 5.1 surround sound experience. So, enters this little gem. It allows you to hook up the HDMI cables, and allows you to split the audio and video feed. I.E. the HDMI goes to the TV and the optical goes right to the Sonos Playbar. It works great, and allows me to get 5.1 surround on Sonos without having to buy a new TV!It allows you to either let it auto-detect inputs, or you can change them manually with the remote. I just set it up with my Harmony 650 universal remote, and it works great.I really could not be more pleased with this product. Even if I didn't have the Sonos playbar, I would still use it with whatever other sound system I chose. It makes the setup simple, and works great. 5Just what I needed to hook up multiple digital sources in with a analogue out to my Bose Home Theater Sound System First let me start this review with a comment about the seller since many may not look at the feedback I posted for them. I am a seasoned Amzon patron, and have become a online shopper with hundreds of orders annually for the last few years. In no way am I associated with this company and have only bought one product from them. The reason I am taking the time is this seller knows how to build a customer base by taking care of the customer, not just have an excellent product. One of the best, if not the best experience to date on Amazon. Now to the review:Background: I have a home theater in my home that has a Bose Lifestyle 12 home theater system that was a gift from my wife in 1995. Yes 1995, the thing will just will not break so I can upgrade. Anyway, it has only RCA hook ups for audio and has no HDMI connections. Not even a digital or optical hookup. I needed something that could combine multiple HDMI sources and convert it to a analogue (RCA) out to go into my Bose system that is wired into the walls, and still does a fantastic job. I have added a ton of items, such as Amazon Fire Stick, PS4, Apple TV all hooked up to this switch with a single out to my theater sound system.Pros: I am not a electronic engineer, so I have no idea how all this works inside, but I plugged all the HDMI sources into the "In" slots and connected my good ole RCA outs to the Bose System and it automatically found the sources and worked just like I wanted. It is very well constructed and the LEDs on the front are not so bright they blind you while watching TV or a movie, etc. The remote works off IR line of sight I believe so you have to have it facing forward. I really don't understand everything about some of the buttons on the front since it automatically senses what I am trying to use and switches the sound to that source. The thing just works right out of the box.Cons: Really not a con, but more of a wish. I do understand why there is a DMNI in on the front of the unit, and I do like it, but I wish there were one or two more HDMI in connections on the rear to handle more. I really couldn't find one with RCA out during my research. Even if I had to compromise a little on size. The customer support for this is superb and as I noted above the thing just does what you want it to do. Thanks for a great product at a reasonable price. If and when I have any future needs, J-Tech Digital will be my first stop and if necessary, I will even pay a little more for a High Quality item but unsurpassable customer care. 5Overcomes SONOS Playbar integration issues with older TVs/AVR's which down-convert HDMI audio through SPIDF/Optical I was looking for a solution for the audio limitations of the SONOS soundbar, and this fits the task.I have a ROKU3, Verizon FIOS, and a PS3. My TV, like most, will down-convert any HDMI source to stereo when output through the Optical out. The same was true with my Pioneer VSX 1120 unless the audio was coming from an OTA souce. This splitter works perfectly! I run the Verizon Box, Roku3, and PS3 into this, run the HDMI out to the TV, and run the SPIDF optical out to the SONOS Playbar. I set the EDID selector to 5.1, and when I check the SONOS app on my phone, it says 5.1 is being received. So, if you are looking to use the SONOS Playbar, and overcome its input limitations and the limitations of your current TV, this is it.You will need to set your ROKU3 and PS3 to output Dolby Digital and *not* "HDMI Auto" or whatever, as the Playbar will not play DTS.If there is any con to this, is that 1 of the HDMI inputs is on the front, but, minor issue. Also, I was able to configure my Harmony 1 to work with this switch/splitter. While the switch will automatically switch to the input that is receiving a signal, the ROKU3 is 'always on'. The Harmony has been programmed to switch the inputs as needed, and power the switch down with turning everything off from the Harmony. 5Issues with PC & remote didn t work This seems to be a nice device to switch between HDMI devices but I did have some issues that couldn t be resolved:1. Since my TV did not support 5.1, it sends its edid to the computer as stereo. This creates a bit of an issue since Win 10 now only gives you the choice to output as stereo through HDMI, apparently, because it thinks that s all that s available. And as such, it did not matter that the switch gave me the option for 5.1, only stereo came out. Sound came through all speakers but no distinct channels (right and rear right would be the same, for example) and it had some sort of weird echo effect on top of all that. I can output 5.1 through optical directly from my pc just fine but that sort of defeats the purpose of a switch. If I had kept the switch, this appeared to be the only real way of correctly outputting sound to my receiver. I don t know if this a limitation of the whole edid and HDCP handshaking but the point is that it doesn t work. Keep in mind that the switch is just that, if your device doesn t support 5.1, your PC won t know any differently even if the switch does allow it.2. That would have almost been OK, since I was going to be switching with an Apple TV anyways. But the remote that came with the system didn t work. The remotes quality was a little meh. I m sure if it worked it might have been fine but crawling behind a cabinet every time I had to change the input wasn t going to work.I wished the switch would let the PC know that there is a 5.1 option but I guess with HDCP it would be impossible for the manufacturer to do that. That s not their fault at all, just a byproduct of using HDMI I guess. I wished it was clearer in the description though, while it is not their fault, it s always good to know how things are going to work before hand. The hardware failure was a bit more of a let down, since crawling under a cabinet to switch inputs really would be been unworkable for me.Note, that even though I was returning it due to hardware failure, the seller did not provide a paid return label until I filed a claim with amazon and even then it only provided a partial refund. Of course, Amazon came through and gave me a credit for the balance. But it s something to keep in mind. 2
