Customer Reviews

Good garage radio / bluetooth speakers I was biased against this item from the moment I received it - as it had obviously (based on the re-taping history) been opened and returned at least twice before coming to me.That aside, there is really nothing I can fault it for other than it lacks FM station presets. It has a 42" antenna wire (actually measured) and receives FM far better than the old GE Spacemaker cassette player / FM radio it replaced. The bluetooth pairing was simple and the FM setup was obvious. It's quite compact and the speakers are decent to my ears (though I have lost most high frequencies due to years of sonic abuse). 4Too many things wrong. Very poor design. Was replacing an old Sony under cabinet radio/CD player. The problems with this iLive unit included:1. Bad reception. Most stations came in fine. One station that we get on other radios did not come in on this radio. Unfortunately it is one of our favorites. So that alone would cause us to return it, but its user interface is terrible and would be another reason to return.2. The screen that shows time/station/timer time has a limited angle of view. I am only 5'8', but from my eye height, if I am close enough to see the words on the controls (which are ridiculously small ... problem #3), the numbers just disappear. I back up a little or crouch in an uncomfortable position, they reappear (think of the old cheap LCD screens that you had to look at straight on to see the images). A 5' tall person probably does not have a problem. And if you are 5 or more feet away, it's probably not a problem. But, I cannot control any of the functions on the unit without having to bend down in a very uncomfortable way.3. The control descriptions are ridiculously small. It's approximately Arial style, at 4.5 point. And that may be slightly generous. I literally printed smaller and smaller examples to compare directly with the words on the unit and got very close at 4.5 point. The letters are a very dim white on a black background, and at a 4.5 point font, I have to be within inches to see the words. UNUSABLE!4. The timer. Nothing intuitive about it, and no indication (beep or flashing light) to tell you if it started. I found I could not tell if it was running. It also takes a lot of button pushing (A LOT of BUTTON PUSHING!) to set it to where you want. Painful to use. Sony had a dial to set the time, which worked really well. Had a beep when the timer was activated and you could see it counting down.Never got around to using any other features. It went right back into it's box and back to seller. 1Good for the price, just a couple minor complaints This does the job as far as I'm concerned, and the price is reasonable. I mainly use it for the radio alarm, but sometimes use it with Bluetooth, too. The radio reception isn't perfect, but it's pretty good (it has one of those little black wire antennas that you can string around), and the sound is decent for the price range, though it gets a little boomy at high volumes.I only have 2 complaints, but neither one's a deal breaker.First, the unit is specifically designed to be installed underneath a cabinet that you can access from the inside -- in other words, whatever it's going under, you have to have access to the top of it to do the installation. I'd planned to install this in a pass-through between my kitchen and a sun room, which are connected by what used to be an exterior wall, so the pass-through just has wall above, there's no "inside" to access. Since this is an "under cabinet" radio I'd assumed it was built to install from below, but instead I had to improvise something with shelf brackets to mount it. Not a huge problem, but something to be aware of in case you have a similar plan.Second, the radio automatically has 20 spots in its station memory, and you can only switch up to the next station in memory, not down to the previous one. Personally I don't have 20 stations I like to listen to, there are basically 2 that I switch between, so that means that if I want to switch from 1 to 2 I'm fine, but from 2 to 1 I have to flip through 18 other memory slots. There is a work-around -- I just programmed one station to all of the even-numbered memory slots, and the other station to all of the odd-numbered slots, so they alternate as I flip through. Of course it's a little bit of a waste of time to program each station to 10 different memory slots, but it saves a lot of clicking in the long run. 4Simple and sufficient radio I purchased this radio to use in the mornings and evenings for fm radio. My husband and I were able to easily install this radio in about 15 minutes. It came with a helpful paper drill template and easy to read instructions. It requires 3 holes be drilled into the cabinet. My list of pros and cons is as follows:Pros:easy to install, small, legible clock, fm radio works, volume is good, Bluetooth was easy to connect to and worked great, dimmable clock screen, alarm & timer capabilities (although I doubt I'll use it). Has a place for cord to wrap on the back to it doesn't just hang.Cons: wall plug is large and black, has place for batteries but won't work on just batteries so seems pointless, requires some antenna adjustments for some fm channels, long antenna, buttons arnt the easiest to push, slow scrolling through stations, I prefer a volume knob over buttons.Overall, non of those cons were deal breakers for me when I considered the price. It seems like decent quality and hopefully we can enjoy it for years to come. I would recommend this to a friend. 4Why people don't give this excellent reviews baffles me... What a great little product! It plays music. The sources are FM radio and Bluetooth streaming.I've read other reviews where people complain about the audio quality? What...you must have an audiophile experience while doing dishes? Give me a break! The unit is small and easily installed. You need a drill and a Phillips head screwdriver. Read the instructions, tape up the guide doc underneath the cabinet & drill. Insert the screws from above and make sure you put the spacers in. Screw. DONE! Make sure you drill an extra hole in the back of the cabinet so that you can surreptitiously snake the built in antenna up the back of the cupboard. How easy is this? The clock? Meh...I bought it for the music not the quality of the clock. The sound? It's great! Is it audiophile quality? No...but who cares. Pairing the unit to any Bluetooth is easy and painless. Read the instructions on how to set the clock and set the presets for your FM listening. That's it! It's simple and sounds great!Don't listen to the naysayers and don't read the snobby reviews either. This is a wonderful, low cost way to add a nice, simple, small and clean audio unit to your kitchen. If I can do it...YOU can do it. 5POS This had poor reception (despite following directions) out of the box the 4 months later the Bluetooth quit working. Called tech support, reset it, still didn't work. Tech support offered I could send it in and get a new one for $20 plus shipping. Not worth it to have a buy a new radio after 4 months. DON'T BUYThe light is poor as well. 1Great radio with two major issues. 3.5 stars Installation was a breeze and the sound is great for the price. A 12 year old would have no problems installing the radio to the cabinetry. Just tape the cutout to the bottom and drill 3 holes. Not audiophile quality, but the sound is crisp and clear. Wife loves being able to stream music from her iPhone to the radio.Instead of drilling another hole to string the FM antenna (small black wire) in the kitchen cabinet, I wrapped it around the radio and had no issues with radio reception. YMMV though. However, the unit has two major issues and is only deserving of 3.5 stars (amazon won't let me give it 3.5 so I'm giving it a 4.:1) LCD display is HORRIBLE. Difficult to read the time with any ambient light. If you are not looking directly at the LCD head on, forget about it. Since bottom of our cabinet is not eye level, I have to stoop to see the clock. Bad choice and crappy LCD. Would much prefer the old digital clock.2) don't know what BT version the radio uses, but make sure you turn the sound down if you switch from bluetooth to radio. All our music is 356kb+ (not lossless but still above average quality) and no matter how high the volume is from the phone/tablet, volume on the device has to be cranked up pretty high. When we switched to radio, I thought the speakers were going to blow due to the high volume. Now we lower the volume before switching sources. One final minor complaint, the buttons on the radio are a pain in the ass. But not a deal breaker. 4This is an On going issue with this model.. Not hard to install. The unit itself sounded really good! As read in a few other reviews, the bluetooth did not work.. They had sent me another unit, I tried it right out of the box and the same issue. For the money it sounded great, just wish the blue tooth worked! UPDATE -> this company did a refund and charged me for a restock fee for a DEFECTIVE product..They had stated that I didnt know how to turn on the bluetooth..Ok HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOULD IT TAKE TO TURN IT ON CORRECTLY? I had 2.. So unless you have more people to try and work this radio, dont bother..I took a chance n i got burned.. 1LOVE IT! LOVE IT!! Husband bought this for me because he knows how much i love listening to music while i cook. I already own a GE Under cabinet radio but I wanted one that I could connect with my ipad or iphone via bluetooth. Its much smaller than i had originally thought. Since my previous radio was on the larger scale. I actually LOVE the smaller size. Its takes up less space and looks more seamless than my previous radio. You can almost over look it but it packs a loud sound. I have not experience any static when i do listen to the radio. The sound quality that comes out of this little machine is incredible. I would stop my search right now. Just buy this radio. You will like it. 5Disappointing I was disappointed almost right away. In order to navigate the station presets you can only move in one direction. For example, if you are listening to preset station two and you want to switch to station preset one you have to hit the preset button twenty time moving up through all the presets past number twenty and back around to preset one. This is bad design. The quality is also terrible. Within six months the light failed. Shortly after that, the clock stopped working. I m not sure if the Bluetooth ever worked. The cover on the power button fell off. And now finally, the radio has stopped working. Time to put it in the trash. 1
