Secures thermostat from unwanted changes. This was purchased to keep my 97-year old mother from constantly changing the thermostat up and down causing the emergency heat to activate. It mounted easily and was tamper proof. However, there was not enough ventilation holes or slits in the guard which made the thermostat temperature reading inaccurate. I drilled many more ventilation holes in the top cover (it is plastic and difficult to drill without causing cracks) which helped a little, but did not fully solve the problem. Then I put washers between the guard and the wall on the mounting screws to raise the guard a little over one-eight of an inch from the wall all around which let the air move freely around the thermostat and in and out of the guard. With the washers the thermostat temperature reading with the guard installed matched the temperature reading with the guard removed. The one-eight distance from the wall is still "tamper proof" too. With these modifications the guard has worked great for two years now and my mother's electric bill in winter and in summer was cut in half because she could not raise and lower the temperature up and down many times each hour during the day. 5Easily Opened This guard is easily opened without the key, which completely defeats the purpose of buying a guard. It hasn't even been a day, and the thermostat has already been tampered with. The reason why this guard fails is that there are only two parts holding it together: the lock and the hinges. The lock is poorly designed and can be turned using a small tool, such as a paper clip. The hinges do not fit together in a secure way, so someone can just pull up on the cover and lift it over the grooves in the plastic. The guard did not meet my expectations, and I regret spending money on it. 1Works perfectly I have a few teenagers in my house that think they can control the thermostat even though neither of them pay the power bill. In Texas when it is 105* outside your a/c shouldn't be set at 65* when your parents leave the house to go to their jobs that pay for that a/c. Anyway, cover was super easy to install, plenty of room around the thermostat for proper air flow/temperature reading and the best part? The kids haven't figured out how to get it off (yet. I'm sure it is going to happen, but for now it works.). It has slots at the top for the face tabs to go through and then the lock is on the bottom. Pretty heavy duty plastic so I think bending it to get the face off would be kind of difficult, but I'm sure it could be done if someone wants at the thermostat bad enough. All in all great product and I can't wait to see the power bill this month because the kids have been "sweating to death" while I'm at work and the a//c is on 77* :) 5Not perfect, but does the job nicely. These are great covers. I ordered 4 of them (3 medium and 1 large) and they all came with the same key. This is convenient; but I'm not sure it was intentional, or if all these covers just universally have the same key. Anyway, they're easy to install and they look nice. My only complaint is that the two pieces fit together SLIGHTLY loose, meaning there's just a little bit of play between them when it's locked. This doesn't create a bit issue, but it would be nicer if they were a snug fit, which I think would discourage tampering. The plastic is durable, though I will say that the reason I purchased these was to replace some that had been tampered with and were broken, so the plastic certainly isn't break-proof. If you're looking for something to prevent access, you may want to look at a metal option or something stronger. If you're just looking for something to discourage people from trying to tamper with the thermostat, this is a good, affordable option. 4Clearly a Good Choice The guards are larger than what the picture had shown. The picture says "Medium" and indicated a more rectangular-shaped box...so I had expected something conforming closer to the shape of my medium-sized Honeywell thermostat. What was sent, and what actually matches the part number is a "Large" square-shaped thermostat guard. I think what me as the consumer was expecting was a medium-sized guard. But what Honeywell was intending was a guard that fits medium-sized thermostats...which it does....and...also fits large-sized thermostats. So, it is actually a large guard. The quality of manufacture is fine. The lock is fine. It is not meant to be a bullet-proof vault. It is only meant to keep most wandering fingers from adjusting the temp. Yes, if you wanted to, you could just pull it off the wall...but if that is your problem, then you have larger problems with your customers. The guard looks nice installed. It is not grossly too big. It was easy to install. Other reviews are correct that it is not "hinged" per se. It has tabs on the top that fit together...but when you unlock it, the cover does just fall right off. I think it's still ok because we are only intending on changing the thermostat twice a year...once for heating mode and once for cooling mode. It is also a great price! 4THIS THING IS A MIRACLE WORKER - MY ENERGY BILL ... THIS THING IS A MIRACLE WORKER - MY ENERGY BILL SOMEHOW MANAGED TO GO FROM 3-400 A MONTH DOWN TO 120-150 WITH FOUR PEOPLE LIVING THERE.INSTALL THIS BOX, PROGRAM YOUR AC, AND LITERALLY - MAGIC WILL HAPPEN AS YOUR HIGH COST OF ENERGY DISAPPEARS FROM YOUR BILL! 5Suits my needs, fits over older Thermostats. I was quite concerned that this wasn't going to fit over an older and bulbous mechanical thermostat, but this box is perfect. It's quite sturdy. 5Adequate to the task -- but bad photoshop job in the "stock" photos *Always* read some reviews before purchasing. I wasn't paying close enough attention to the product photos nor to the product dimensions, and thought that this box would be a tighter fit around my thermostat -- which is identical to the one in the *badly photoshopped* image from the vendor. (Ironic, considering that Honeywell makes both the thermostat and this box. Why didn't they just dig up an actual thermostat, for the product photo?)Mind you, the box still meets the base requirements adequately; it just looks huge and unwieldy. Additionally, the design of the box is such that the interior dimensions of the rear section just barely fit around the sides of the thermostat, which is a very peculiar contrast to the overall size.(I've attempted to attach photos of my own installation as a proper point of reference, but they aren't uploading for some reason. I will reattempt again later, after I've received a response from Amazon tech support.) 3Does what it,s supposed to do. Solved a big problem. I have tenants in my house and they were always adjusting the temperature on our 3 thermostats to crazy temperatures costing me a lot on my energy bill. So I replaced all three with Honeywell RTH6580WF Smart thermostats and locked them up with these. Problem solved! Paid for them selves in the first month. Now if they want to change the temperature they need to text my wife or I to request a change and we can change it from our smart phones. HA HA. FYI all 3 lock boxes are keyed alike which works for me. 5Keeps my gas/electric bill down. I like it! I sublet rooms in the home I lease to other women. I was having problems with one tenant cranking the heat up to 80 degrees F because she wanted to walk around in the middle of winter in nearly no clothing. As her lease did not permit her to do this, a fact she couldn't seem to comprehend, and she didn't care about anyone else's comfort, I decided to buy a lock box instead of investing in a remote-controlled thermostat for a home I don't own. Easy enough to install (there are no instructions even online, and it took a few tries), easy to use, and just the right amount of petty for my purposes. 4
