It's a hard disk. It's for a laptop, it uses minimal power. But it's not speedy, It's a hard disk. It's for a laptop, it uses minimal power. But it's not speedy, like a 3.5" would be. But if you are running on a budget for your next build and are looking to minimize Heat and power, at the expense of a little performance and sincerely cheaper than a SSD this is for you. On the other hand with the NEW 4D TLC memory that just came out (which purports to make SSD's cheaper and faster.) the OLD SSD's based on the mature 3D TLC and is driving the price points down, way down.So if you wait a bit it may become a moot point in the next few moths.Edit - 10/10/2018 And now it's a moot point what with SSD's at 500GB able to be had for around $70. 5Very pleased! I have many WD products and have never been disappointed. They always perform, software is excellent. I'd buy another one. Excellent build quality I think. I take care with my drives though, and never move or bump them while they are busy. Don't store or use in extreme conditions, and no pets or kids to knock things over so maybe that's part of my good experience but I think overall WD puts out a solid product at an affordable price. 5Not "new". No manufacturer warranty. Seller warranty is unknown. No response from seller. Filtered on "New", and this drive was available. It was not "new" and came preloaded with OEM software. HGST offers no warranty. Altitech, the seller did not respond to a direct question regarding the warranty status. Diagnostics show less than 1 hour of use, and so far, the drive has been working fine. 2A Real Good Deal ! Unit arrived on-time with quality packaging. Drive enclosed in ESD bag envelope. This was advertised as OEM drive and I installed into a dated Linux OS installed Dell Latitude D630. This drive is exceptional value and performance for the cost! I chose Hitachi (HGST) for durability and performance reasons. Installation was a breeze but since this was a thinner drive, 7mm, I had to invert the latitude to slide and properly align the drive SATA sockets. Please be aware of manufacturer recommend drive removal/install procedures and especially follow ESD grounding procedures to prevent any spurious future problems. Used Clonezilla to transfer partition image for older drive to new HGST drive. This Travelstar for a mechanical drive really rocks with the 7200RPM and 32Meg cache! I get consistent 124MB copy speeds doing video editing work! I have never seen such high speeds from mechanical laptop drive before this. I am very impressed and appreciative that I have this drive at such a good price. 5LET THE BUYER BEWARE! HDD was listed as "NEW" but actually had 20919 hours on it. This drive had been in use for years. Contacts showed use and there was a thin film of dust on it. If you want a very used HDD this is your company. The drive was in working order and it was the right model. But when you order "new" you expect "new" not extremely well used. If you buy from this company get free software to extract the S.M.A.R.T. data from the drive and see what you are actually getting. 1Much better than OEM and at a good price Bought this as a replacement for the OEM Seagate drive that came in the Asus notebook computer I bought 3 years ago. It's unfortunate that computer OEMs have to go the chintzy route and use Seagate drives by default, especially Asus, but that's another story. I installed this drive rather easily and reloaded the software, and there is definitely a difference between the OEM 5400 RPM drives and the 7200 RPM ones. Plus, the price is cheaper than most Western Digital-branded drives. If I can get the same quality or better for less, then why not? 5initial tests - seems like a great drive This is a preliminary review as the drive was just put into use. I bought it as a play forward piece of hardware. It is being used in ancient Dell D-ought20 series laptops - either a 620 or an 820 with the idea it will eventually be yanked and put in a newer machine at some point. It works fine with these older laptops with preliminary testing. The only unusual thing I ran into is i couldn't get windows (both an old XP pro, and a win7 home premium 64bit) to see the drive. So I put a live linux cd into the optical drive of one of my desktops and hooked up the drive via and external usb drive connection and formatted with Gparted - setting up both NTFS and EXT4 for dual booting. My initial impression is that it is just a decent drive at a decent price and handy for many purposes. It appears to run pretty cool compared to a couple of old 2.5 7200rpm 1.5 gig throughput drives I have. Will try to check back in latter after it has been in use for a while.Update - 10-31-2015: Had too add to this review as this drive is now fully in use and it is exceptional! It is no SSD - but it is the fastest disk drive I have ever had in a laptop. Even though it is in an old Dell D620 - so I can't realize all it's speed - it made a huge difference over the old 1.5gb 7200rpm drive. So if you have an old computer and want to add some pep to it - but don't want to go SSD (which would make getting at least Win7 a good idea - if using Windows) then this is a great buy! 5Easy as pie to install in a 2009 model ASUS ... Very please with this HDD. Easy as pie to install in a 2009 model ASUS laptop.Wife was using laptop, and it kept crashing. I bought her a new laptop for her birthday, and she wanted me to throw away the laptop."Let me play around with it. I might be able to fix it.""NO. THROW IT AWAY."Ran chkdsk diagnostic and figured out after two days of running that the hard drive was bad. Eventually, Windows 7 wouldn't even finish loading.Bought this HDD, got it in 4 days, installed it, installed the recovery disks, spent a week updating Windows 7, and all is right with the world. One thing to be aware of if this is a replacement HDD. You need to update the SATA driver. Force the update. Otherwise, you cannot receive Windows update. It took me 3 hours to figure this out after I installed it. 5Buyer beware! I purchased three of these drives May 18, 2016. I received them seven days later and each of them had very different manufacturing dates on them. One had a date of Jan 2015 on it and which I finally got around to using earlier this year and it completely died less than three months later. And I cannot get my customer's data off of it. And of course it doesn't have any warranty which I believe should be made MUCH clearer right up front in Amazon's listing. I mean, don't all modern electronic products that cost more than a few bucks have some kind of warranty? Unless they are "used" and even used parts very often have some kind of warranty. This drive is not listed as used, although it probably should be. Unscrupulous sellers if you ask me. Amazon should be ashamed. 1Failed completely after three months, seller OEMGENUINE sells used products as new with no warranty This drive worked great - for a few months. I installed it with a clean format in late April 2017. By the end of July 2017, it had developed bad sectors that crashed the OS and caused boot problems. Today, it failed completely and the bios won't even recognize that it's there. The machine was never dropped, overheated, abused, or even heavily used.Do not trust the high feedback score - it's for the HGST product, not for this disreputable seller. Read through the negative reviews.Buyer beware. 1
