Customer Reviews

TRY IT. YOU'LL LIKE IT. I seldom post reviews of products on Amazon (and I buy A LOT from Amazon) but for this product I have to make the exception. My wife & I cut the cable cord about a year ago and have been streaming everything and when Aereo arrived on the scene we jumped right on it. Thought our cable days were over for ever. When the Supreme Court put Aereo out of business last week the horrible thought occurred to me that I might have to go back to cable (God forbid). I thought about indoor antennae but didn't think it would work. I live on the upper east side of Manhattan (Yorkville) on the 11th floor. My apartment is on the north east corner of the building and faces east. I'm surrounded by high rise buildings including a 40 story one directly across the street to the south which completely blocks the view to the south (and the Empire State Building from whence just about every OTA TV signal originates). I figured there is no way I going to get any kind of decent signal through all this concrete and steel. Hell, I had to buy a WiFi booster just so I could get a decent WiFi signal in my living room because the router was in another room. So I started to research indoor HD antennae. The price range is absurd, anywhere from $6.00 to $100.00 or more. The reviews for this product on Amazon and other places seemed promising but I slightly gagged on the price. But I thought: a hundred dollars is still a whole lot less than a never ending cable bill. I bought it with the thought that if it didn't work out I'd return it and eat the the re-stocking fee (if any) and the return shipping costs. Needless to say the item arrived lickety split as always from Amazon on Monday. Yesterday I hooked it up. Let me just say that hook up is quite easy with one or two provisos. The coaxial cable that comes with the unit has typical screw on/off ends. MY TV (Samsung) has a RCA type plug for the antennae in. Fortunately I saved all the cables & adapters that came with the TV (quite a few) and sure as hell there was the adapter to covert the screw on end into an RCA type plug in end. So check the back of your TV to see what type you have, screw in or RCA plug in. It's liable to save you some aggravation. The instructions tell you to then scan for existing channels. I hope you saved the manual that came with your TV cause you're gonna need it. After about a half hour of looking through my TV manual, I finally found the tiny paragraph that barely explains how to scan for channels. That being said I started the scan (takes a couple minutes) and low and behold it came back with about 58 channels. Let me say here that unless you're blessed with ability to speak multiple languages including Spanish, Chinese, Korean and others many of these channels will be useless to you. HOWEVER, the ones your are looking for (CBS, NBC, ABC, WOR, NET) are all there and the reception is SPECTACULAR. I cannot express how stunned I was. I stood there in front of my tv with my mouth opened. The picture was better than anything we previously got through cable. Here's why: I learned that the cable companies have to compress the signal before they send the signal over their wires. OTA broadcasts are not compressed; so, you get a truly high definition picture. The difference is amazing. If I can get this kind of signal where I live (surrounded by concrete and steel with no view of the south) then unless you live in a bank vault in a basement, I don't see how you couldn't do as well or better if you live in Manhattan. Cannot give this thing enough stars. Yeah, it's one of the most expensive ones out there but think of it in comparison to your monthly cable bill. No contest! (One sad note: I got to watch the USA loose to Belgium on channel 41 [Univision]. Yeah, it was in Spanish which I don't speak, but it was the World Cup and IT WAS FOR FREE!) 5This Antenna great in the SF Bay area! I bought this antenna to replace my comcast cable connection in a room I rent. My primary goal was to use the cable cutter antenna to view local news and sports. I checked the quality using tvfool to see what channels I should get before deciding on this antenna. I placed the antenna about 20 feet away against a wall facing out our back yard in Fremont, CA. The channel sources are from 15 to 35 miles away. My results are very good and all of the channels like FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, and others like KQED work very well. This has allowed me to move away from comcast completely and use my Roku and this antenna for all my movie, news, and sports needs. 5Works VERY well in sub-optimal conditions. Very pleased. It's been about 7 months since I got this and I wanted to wait to give a good review. But wow, this thing is great. I live on the base of a pretty big / wooded hill and on the other side of this hill are my cities towers. I was really concerned that this would cause me to not get a good signal. My towers are pretty much directly east and another set of towers are just north of east. So having one antenna that's able to get signal on all towers is tough. But this thing works well. I did get an antenna amplifier to help. Without it I got about 15 channels, with I get around 38.Also, I constructed a small tower to raise the antenna about 10 feet off the ground. The base of the antenna connects to the tower through 2 U-Bolts and is very sturdy. The make of this antenna is solid. The box it arrived in was all beat to hell and as a result the antenna had a slight warp. Some gentle coaxing with a precision instrument (hammer) proved to solve the problem. So, what are you waiting for, cut the cable package full of crap you don't watch and get this thing!!! 5A great HDTV antenna. I've had very good luck with this HDTV antenna. I first got this back in Dec. 2014 ($99), and I bought another in June of 2015 ($79), because of how well this works. One for the living room, one for the bedroom. What I had before was a cheap $30 RCA antenna. Around 50 miles west of Chicago, I get so many stations. Although, truth be told, a few stations are repeated on a few channels. So the overall numbers can be misleading. But for sure, I did pick up more stations than that cheap RCA antenna. For some reason, CBS was always a problem. Not any more. A gentleman I work with, who has cut his cable too, bought one on my recommendation. Not having cable for more than 4 years now, and I really don't miss it. At the time of this review, I see the price has come down to ($69.50). I might just buy a third one. By the way, made in the USA, so that is great. 5Went from 2 channels to 18 overnight. I was tired of the rabbit ear shuffle in the living room. We live 40 miles from the nearest broadcast networks in a rural area and are "off the grid" and wanted a decent looking antenna that did not draw power. We first tried the antenna inside the house and got our same two channels we got with rabbit ears. Then, last weekend, we mounted the Cable Cutter outside with a piece of wood drilled into the eve of the house. We now get 18 channels! If the weather is right we get 21 channels. The antenna is nice-looking and well-constructed. It mounts easily indoors or out and is unobtrusive. I highly recommend this antenna. We have never had cable or satellite and are actually kind of annoyed at having 18 channels. If it doesn't work immediately just be patient and retry your channel search after a couple of minutes or a second time and you will not be disappointed. 5Perfect Crisp Clear HD Images After researching for a long time and having tried the antennas with power amplifier, I found that this antenna is the miracle of technology. I live in NYC in the middle of the concrete jungle. I set it up and searched for channels. A good 40 channels resulted from the swip. Impressive considering that my tv is far from the window and located in a corner in the center of my living room. I got 20 additional channels just by positioning the antenna in a more open space. The HD channels are better than cable. Worth every penny. If you are in NYC, don't waste your money with those high tech HD antennas with amplifier. They do not do the work as nice as this 5Works great in Mountain View, CA This antenna works great. I am about south 35+ miles from transmitters in San Francisco and about 15 miles north-ish from San Jose. I tried the Mohu Leaf 50 (amplified) but I had variations from day to day in the number of channels that I received. This antenna received 72+ channels from the first day on. That includes all of the main stations (FOX, KRON, CBS, ABC, PBS, NBC, COFY, CW, ION). I had to place this (and the Leaf) 25 ft away (cable length) from the TV and near or in a window to get a satisfactory number of channels. Mine is at siting about 5 ft off the ground and there are buildings and trees that block the path to the transmitters. In addition, I asked a question via their website and got an immediate answer from a support engineer who was very helpful. 5Beware the max is 50 miles I bought the 60 mile option, but when you read the details and the box it states max 50 miles, which is the true distance. It was very easy to install (I hung in attic and plugged into my existing cable line). I received HD channels up to 49 miles away (FOX was around that distance), and I thought why doesn't everyone do this! However, you quickly learn that bad weather conditions or other interference will disrupt your connection... so you can't always count on it. For reference I found that CBS is the major network with the strongest signal (even though NBC was actually closer), it was the only one that had perfect reception no matter where the antenna was in the house. NBC & FOX were only picked up when it is in the attic, and ABC I didn't bother with because I already knew it was too far from me and I hear it has the most difficult reception. This is based on East of Orlando. 4Happy to have gotten rid of cable Glad I cut the cord.Surprised at how many things there are to watch - and I say that for people who can't afford cable.I don't live in a city with a lot of channels, I live in a suburb and get about 12 or 15, but there are generally 3 movies, 2 sports, 3 PBS, 2 old sitcoms and Johny Carson, plus the networks. Channel 8 is the only one I don't get. If I got an attic or rooftop antenna, I could probably get it, but it isn't worth it to me.What I have learned with these antennas is that each place that tested them had different results.I opted for this one and am happy enough, I get most of the channels in my area, but a man who lives closer to the border of another State put an antenna in his attic and doubled his channels. 4It Works Great... May Need To Locate Sweet-Spot 35 miles from broadcasting area, but I am in a heavily wooded area. So I had to try out different locations in my backyard. At one point, the connector on the antenna just popped off. I decided to just strip the wire and reconnect under the screws and it still works... But still that wasn't very secure for it to fall off so easily. It works.. the higher up the better.. try different locations if need be.For us, we had to set in the backyard AWAY from the house, as the trees near the home were a contributing factor in blocking the signal. But in the back, the trees are further away, allowing the signal to reconvene into something that could be attained. Now I'm waiting on a 25 foot pole and signal amp as I couldn't get NBC (no huge loss, lol) and some get blocky at times. I'll add, when we tested it (17 feet up a pole weaved in a ladder, 100 foot cable to TV) we experienced a HEAVY thunder storm. We decided to just leave it and watch the quality and not one glitch the entire time. So, this will definitely be a major factor in us cutting the cable. It works, but depending on your situation, you may need to figure out placement to find that sweet spot. 4
