Fortunately, I caught the leak before it flooded my ... Beware! The product leaked water from the seam. I have used the prior version of this product for years, now it appears that they have a quality control problem. One of the two cartridges leaked from the seam. Fortunately, I caught the leak before it flooded my whole kitchen and cause water damage to the structure. I installed a new one and that one looks ok. If you hear a hissing sound and have low water flow with these, make sure it is not leaking. I now keep the unit above a plastic tub, as I expect it will leak again based on other reviews. I hate to switch to another brand because I have been happy with these in the past. 1Good But Expensive Filter Cartridge I have been using this kind of filter for more than 5 years, it worked pretty well (minus 1 star for the ever increasing price and general filter cartridge replacement availability). I am very sensitive to water taste (I would prefer to drink distilled water if I can afford to), and my taste bud told me that this filter does a good job in removing enough dissolved matter for me to like drinking the filtered water out of it. My filter housing unit use a pair of this filter cartridge connected in series. Here is how I tried to save some money using these filter cartridges in pair (with slot 1 filter cartridge is the one receiving the incoming water source directly and slot 2 filter cartridge receiving water from slot 1 filter cartridge):1. replace the filter cartridges only when the water flow slow to unbearable rate;2. move the slot 2 filter cartridge to slot 1 and replace slot 2 filter cartridge with a new oneThe reason the water flow slowed down over time is because slot 1 filter cartridge did its job in filtering out dissolved matter and thus getting clotted. But slot 2 filter cartridge receiving cleaner water remaining mostly not clotted. We don't want to waste slot 2 filter cartridge as it can still do some useful filtering job. So when it is time for filter replacement, it is time for slot 2 filter cartridge to move to slot 1 to do the first stage filtering and let the new filter cartridge do the second stage filtering, so you only need to use one new filter cartridge at each replacement cycle. 4Had been a money saver. Filters all our drinking water and ice maker for the last 6 years. We had been using this same filters for the last 6 years (and on two models of GE's Faucet filter) and they had served their purpose faithfully.I replaced them after 6 months of usage (or, when the light indicator at the base of the faucet blinks) together with the CR2032 battery - if needed. These filters used to cost a lot in that big hardware chain store but I'm glad to see the prices come down here at Amazon. Make sure to shop around as there are various sellers of the same filters. They are very easy to replace if you follow the instructions carefully (specially lubricating the rubber seal with food-grade oil). These filters had saved us a lot of money (instead of buying bottled water) for the years it had been in use. It's perfect for a smaller family. 4GE FQSVF Drinking Water System Replacement - Better Specs than some of the cheaper brands I replace these in about 10 minutes so extremely easy to use as I have been using for years. Also as one of the other folks pointed out, these filers take out more then taste and other contaminants as they take out a lot of VOC and an assortment of other harmful chemicals. So to me, not worth saving $12 - 15 over the course of 10 - 14 months We live in CA so state law all the water coming in has to be tested but we have had our city water tested before and some chemicals may be over the "suggested" PPM levels. Also they tell you to replace every 6 months or when the red light comes on the filter reminder which is on a 6 month battery timer which can short out or not be accurate, I replace them when the water flow starts to slow down, then you know you know your filters need to be replaced. That is usually 10 - 14 months for our household of 3 people since we have a filter at the sink and the the filters on the drinking water coming out of the fridge. My only gripe is that GE tells you to lube the gaskets with food grade silicon grease which they DON'T include so you need to buy a tube of that separately. Why not include the tube with the filters?? They still work fine without putting the Silicon grease on but it may be tougher to get them off later on. 5Super Slow Flow We have been using GE Smart filters (model FQSVF) for many years. We recently purchased a set of filters from Amazon LLC (not from some no name sellers) & the water flow is several times slower than our pre-existing GE filters. Evidently, the center hole on top of the new filters are much smaller (see attached picture). Can this be the reason why waterflow is so slow? Am I getting genuine GE filters on Amazon?Amazon website suggests that I contact GE directly for support. Don't waste your time. I spent several days going back and forth with GE. The following is GE's final reply. Bottomline, GE doesn't warrant its products sold on Amazon.com.GE's Reply:You will have to contact Amazon in regards to the filter you purchased from them. We are not affiliated or warranty filters purchased from Amazon due to we can not guarantee they are genuine GE Parts.Best Regards,GE Appliance Parts Team 1Bad Customer support from GE but This set WORKS WELL with GE FQSLF This set WORKS WELL with GE FQSLF - I cannot understand why the manufacturer creates such a mystery around this topic when so many people bought the FQSLF which is now discontinued: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000G35L3W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1The GE page has conflicting info. at the top of the page says that this model DOES WORKS WELL with GE FQSLF, but the Q&A section explains that it will not fit and the literature detail also omits the fact that it is indeed compatible. I hope this review helps others that are wasting their time trying to find replacement cartridges. 3Defective water filter broke and flooded our house This water filter broke after three months of very light use in our second home. Luckily we were in town, only out for three hours, when it broke and flooded our kitchen, dining room and living room. If we had been out of town it would have destroyed our house. When my husband dragged our large water-soaked rug outdoors to dry he fell and injured himself.GE only guarantees these filters for one month but they say they are supposed to last six, and then to only need changing for optimal filtration purposes. But the mechanical structure of the filter canister should last much longer. We plan to change our water filtration system in that house so that we don t ever have to use these filters again. 1GREAT filter but does not last 6 months. Quite expensive compared to comparable replacement cartridges. Absolutely one of the best "under the sink" filter system you can buy. Without going into a complex filtration system, that is. The blinking "time to change" light never worked. However, if you drink water as much as humans are supposed to and have a family(my family is 4 and a dog, the dog gets filtered water also) you will know when they need to be replaced without a light. We use ours for cooking even boiling water for pasta. It is also diverted to the freezer ice maker. The water tastes like nothing. Like water is supposed to. It is just perfect, crisp and refreshing. My tap water smells strong like chlorine or bleach from the processing. These filters take care of that easily. The water will begin to get sort of slow, then really really slow when it is time to change the filter. They NEVER last 6 months. Maybe 3 1/2 months to 4 is realistic. Any more than that and you will have such a slow flow rate you'll be at the sink for hours for a glass of water. Like I said my family drinks a lot of water. Eight cups a day give or take for each of us and a bowl a day for the dog plus cooking for 4. I love the filter but the price is expensive, at least for middle class family. If you drink a lot of water and use it for cooking you will be replacing them much more often than six months. 4Replaced FQSLF w/no Issues & They Meet NSF/ANSI 42 & 53 Standards These replaced GE FQSLF filters on a roughly 8 year old GXSL55F undersink filter system.Since FQSLF filters aren't made anymore I considered those various off-brand filters Amazon carries but they seem to only meet NSF/ANSI 42 standards; those are, per the NSF site, "the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants."According to the instruction sheet with the FQSVF filters, they meet NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 standards; again per the NSF site, the 53 standard "establishes the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in public or private drinking water." So, regardless of the extra cost over the cheaper filters, for me these were the way to go.There was no problem installing them; they easily twist in like the FQSLF filters. First few minutes running the water to purge any air in the system they were kind of noisy; very gently tapping the filters and unit to purge any trapped air helped clear that up. So far, there are no leaks, water flow seems OK, water is crystal clear with no funny odors or tastes. Now that I know the FQSVF filters work with my filter system (and I won't have to replace it; Yay!) I'd buy them again, but I'll shop around first: When I looked these filters up on the GE website, it showed the price as $45.99 (as of 9-26-17) so Amazon's $71.99 list price is apparently bogus. 4Works great but pricing on the replacement filters are making it harder to keep using the system I got this FQSVF filter set for our GE Drinking Smart Water Filter System because the ones we always get for it FQSLF has been getting harder to find and twice as expensive as they used to be. This filter set was too high too so if when it comes to replace them again the price is so inflated we are going to start looking for a different system. We've had the system for years now and the filters really work and make a big difference in how our water tastes. I just wish they'd make the replacement filters more reasonable in pricing. 4
