Customer Reviews

Works well but instructions incomplete This device has worked well, but the instructions have a critical omission. I received the correct instructions for this model, but they are incomplete. They fail to say that in addition to setting the time (hour, minute) it also is necessary to set the day of the week using the same method as setting the time: viz., hold down the "CLOCK/DST" button and adjust the day-of-the-week with the "WEEK" button. This may explain the problem some reviewers have reported with the device performing unpredictably. Also, when programming the device, it is necessary to set the correct day-of-the week individually for each "on" and "off" time. If, for example, you set an "on" time for Monday, the "off" time will not automatically default to Monday. This is an advantage if you want to program an on-off cycle over more than one day, but is easy to forget when programming multiple on and off cycles. Finally, the "RND" function worked well, but be aware (as is stated correctly in the instructions), that setting the device to "RND" will delay the cycle by up to 30 minutes, not change it randomly around the set time. So, if you want the device to turn on at, for example, 7 p.m., +/- 15 minutes, it is necessary to set the "on" time to 6:45 p.m., and activate the "RND" function. 4I'm in love.... Many evenings I sleep in my reclining lift chair because of medical issues and the lamp on the table next to me has a timer on it. The timer was an older model that ticked every second and I couldn't fall asleep with that in my ear. I purchased this timer and I'm thrilled. Silence. Nothing. Easy to set up and plug in. Exactly what I needed. I have it set to go on and off at the same time every day but it has the ability to be set for different times on different days of the week. Well worth the money if you need a new timer. My old timer was a bit big because of the rotating dial, this timer is small. Definitely recommend. I just ordered 3 more for other uses in my home where I have the older model timers. Don't hesitate to purchase this. 5GE Digital timer This is a decent digital timer. It allows 20 different daily on/off hour/minute settings. Each of these on/off settings can be applied to different weekday and/or weekend combinations so that I can have different daily program with some or all of these 20 on/off settings for each day of the week which means it can have at most weekly 7x20 on/off settings. It has internal chargeable battery so I don't need to worry about the power outage to mess up my settings, or replacing batteries. If not used as a timer it can be simply used as a digital clock. It is specified at 8 A and 125 V for general use which means you cannot connect it to an appliance that consumes more than 1000 W. It is also specified at 125 V and 5 A for Tungsten, which equals to 625 W. I am not sure about what Tungsten is, maybe some welding thing? Anyway, before connecting an appliance to it, make sure it doesn't exceed its specification. A lamp or a cooker should be fine, but for a heater, it may burn this timer. Also, this timer has only polarized 2-prong socket, which means if your appliance's power cord has a 3-prong plug, then this is not for you.One thing needs to point out is the instruction paper is not accurate about how to operate the timer. It mentions three settings: ON to remain on and ignore user's setting, OFF to remain off and ignore user's setting, and AUTO to follow user's settings. But actually when I click "ON/OFF" button, it will recycle the operating modes as ON, AUTO ON, OFF, AUTO OFF. There is no "AUTO" mode but either "AUTO ON" or "AUTO OFF" modes. If you set the operation mode to "AUTO OFF", although your lamp is off right now, the timer will turn it on when your next on setting time arrives and keep following any future on/off settings. If you set the operation mode to "AUTO ON", then it is on now, and will be turned off when the next Off setting time arrives and then follow any future on/off settings. I am adding this comment to avoid any confusion that you may have. In addition, before clicking "ON/OFF" button to set "AUTO OFF" mode to let timer be in charge of your lamp or other appliance, click "ON/OFF" button to reach "ON" mode to see if you lamp can be turned on to avoid a mistake that you forget to turn the switch of your lamp on. Also, you'd better carefully check all your on/off settings to make sure AM/PM of the setting times are that you intended because it's easy to make mistakes. Overall, I highly recommend this digital timer based on the build quality and all the features it has. 5A very flexible, quality, quiet timer, but with incomplete instructions This timer seems fairly well designed and constructed. The instructions that come with it, though, are limited and incomplete.Notable features: The timer plugs into a three-prong grounded outlet and it has a single three-prong grounded outlet for a timed device. The outlet rating is for 15 Amps (pure resistive load - not a lamp with a heater element), 10 Amps (1250 Watts) Tungsten (e.g. an incandescent lamp or ballast lamp with an initial electrical surge when first turned on), or 1/2 (0.5) horsepower (e.g. for a motor). It is fairly easy to program the unit with the buttons following the provided instructions, although see below to understand some of the buttons. I will not replicate the instructions here. Google "GE 15150 user instructions" without the quotes to get a PDF copy of the instructions. Each program can be activated for a selectable set of days of the week - any one day, weekdays, weekends, all days, and a few other subsets of the days of the week. This is not documented in the instructions. While in programming mode, press WEEK successively to choose the day(s) on which this program will activate. The unit has an internal battery to maintain its settings. It must be plugged into a wall outlet for five minutes before setting it up. The instructions say nothing about how long it takes to fully charge the battery or how long a charge lasts! The On/Off button can be pushed to set the unit to On (always on), Off (always off), On/Auto (switch on and in timer mode), and Off/Auto (switch off and in timer mode. The unit has a Daylight Savings Time (DST) feature. It is not documented in the instructions. Pressing the Clock/DST button for a few seconds activates DST mode. Pressing it again turns this off. It sets the hour ahead or back one hour, making it easier to adjust for DST. When on there is a TINY +1Hr indicator on the display. Set this on or off according to whether you are on DST before setting the clock. The unit has a Random feature although as of this writing I have not tested it. It is not documented in the instructions. While the unit is on with just the time of day displayed (NOT in program or clock-set mode), pressing and holding HOUR/RND for a few seconds turns RND on or off. A TINY RND indicator in the display indicates the mode is active. I found a YouTube video for a different GE timer that also has a Random function. On that timer, activating RND mode will cause the timer to turn lights on/off in a +/- 30 minute window around your set time (up to 30 minutes before or after the set time.) Hopefully it works the same way on this unit. It probably makes sense to have at least a 30-minute on time if using this feature.I recommend the timer although you may want to print this review and keep the notes with the instructions! 4Incomplete instruction manual, but the unit works fine. *UPDATE 2014-06-16*I bought another one last week, and the instruction that comes with the unit has all the latest information. It says this about the Random Setting:* When the timer is at clock display status, press and hold HOUR button for 3 seconds or more to turn on or off the random function. "RND" will be shown in the LCD when activated.* Random function is only valid for the programmed setting time period.* Random ON/OFF time generally will be 2-30 minutes postponed based on programmed setting time. If programmed setting time duration is below 10 minutes, RND will be shown in the display, but in fact, it is not valid, the appliance will be switched ON/OFF as per programmed setting time only.Disregarding some grammar weirdness, I think it's fairly clear, although I still wonder if it'll postpone things past the OFF time. For example, if ON at 10:00 and OFF at 10:10, will it start as late as 10:30 and end as late as 10:40? I'd guess so. Obviously, if OFF is set to 10:09, random function won't take effect because the duration is only 9 minutes.--original review below--The manual it came with only describes the old model (15150), even though it states both model numbers (15150 and 15154). Note the old model doesn't have "random" and "DST" features.I had to search the web, cross-reference with other models, and experiment to figure out how the "random" feature works.First, you can toggle "random" mode by pressing and holding HOUR/RND button for 3 seconds. A tiny (RND) indicator is visible on the LCD display when the feature is enabled. In random mode, it distorts your programmed ON/OFF time by +/- 0 to 30 minutes. For example, if you set the unit to turn on at 9PM and turn off at 10PM, it will turn on at a "random" time between 8:30PM to 9:30PM, and then turn off at a "random" time between 9:30PM and 10:30PM.I am not patient enough to figure out what the unit does with all the possible conflicts in programmed times and random mode, but the basic "random" mode does work on the 15154 model I got. Also, the newer model has Daylight Savings Time feature, as can be seen by CLOCK/DST button. To toggle DST, press and hold the CLOCK/DST button for 3 seconds. A tiny (+1h) indicator is visible on the LCD display when DST is enabled.I've uploaded an image to show the newer model. 5erratic performance after 6 months This timer worked just as advertised for about 6 months. After that, the timer began to randomly fail to follow the program. Sometimes it would fail to turn on at the correct time. Last night it turned off at 10:27 pm when it was supposed to turn off at 10:00 pm. Woods timers that I bought at the same time are working properly. I wouldn't buy another GE. Amazon won't take it back after 3 months.Favorable outcome. I contacted Jasco Products, explained that the timer had become erratic within the 1 year warranty period, and they sent me a replacement without hesitation, and did not ask for the faulty one back. Excellent customer service by Jasco Products. 2Excellent reliable timer - not that difficult to program as others describe This is a perfect timer for my application: holiday lights connected to an exterior outlet located in a dry location under the roof eaves where the holiday lights are connected. The outlet is switched from the inside the garage.Even though this is for indoor use, I believe it is safe to use in this dry setting as there is no exposure to water. The key is if someone turns off the power switch by mistake, the battery backup retains the power. It arrived in the package powered up, so I assume it lasts for many hours.I've used this for 3 years and it is a terrific timer. No issues with the connections.I'm surprised there are some many negative comments about this being difficult to program. You press the program button to set it to turn on - set the hours and minutes, press it again to set the off time. You can program up to 20 different timers settings, but anyone who needs 20 different settings should probably get free counselling. It is true the RND and DST features are not obvious to figure out, but it will take you about 2 minutes to figure out. For RND, just hold down the HOUR/RND button for 3 seconds until the indicator disappears. For DST, hold down the CLOCK button for 3 seconds. If you can handle that massive complexity, you're good to go.And for $15 from a credible brand of GE, it's a good value. Much better than the cheap mechanical ones with the annoying tabs. The picture in Amazon is incorrect. It does not show the RND or DST buttons. If you get lucky, you might get the one they show because who needs the RND and DST feature anyway. A NASA engineer must have been hired by GE to put in as many features as they can. 5PERFECT! Ok agreeing with everybody on here... The user manual is kinda whatever. There is no 12/24 hour mode.... Lets talk setup, i'm in Socal. Summer so I set DST on so it adds that extra hour... I am using this for an LED strip lights that illuminate my bar. This is a 6AMP 12V adaptor, this is rated 5 AMPS, but I know that its barley pulling 2 amps.Setting it up is very simple. First push program, it will say 01 in the corner, and ON then use week ( which is actually day ) then hit hour and minute to set the time as desired, remember PM appears on the right side of the screen. Hit program again once WEEK, HOUR and MINUTE are set, it will say 01 OFF. Then do the same thing. Follow this procedure as needed. I needed 7 days, programmed to business hours. My bartenders will forget to turn it off even if I paid them $20 an hour. Shoot I might periodically myself as its not with any light switches. Here is a must know, I am going to contradict the guy who posted this.AUTO ON - means your program is running, and you currently want the outlet onAUTO OFF - means your program is running, and you currently want the outlet off (HAVEN'T TESTED IT JUST ASSUMES)OFF - is just offI put the timer on AUTO OFF as suggested by his review however it was during business hours and I wanted them on, so I I put it on AUTO ON and since then its been working fine. I am assuming AUTO OFF is just starting it as OFF.Being a bar and closing at opening at 3PM on say FRIDAY, and Closing at 2AM. Simply make sure you change day the when you goto the program OFF. So I would put under program 1 ON Friday 3PM then program 1 OFF at Saturday 2AM. 5Works Well We wanted something that would control our television - it's easier to get everybody to move from the tv room and on towards bed if the tv just shuts itself off. The timer is battery-powered, and comes with a battery, so I simply removed it from the package, followed the (slightly confusing) instructions, plugged it into the wall, plugged the tv into the outlet on the side, and it's worked perfectly. You can program up to 20 different on/off pairs, and you can set the times differently for days or for groups of days. Tapping the "Week" button cycles through different days - the whole week, any single given day, just the work week, just the weekend, all days but Sunday, and a few other combinations. One quirk: You have to hold down the clock button and then press the hour/minute buttons to set the clock time. But holding down the clock button for five seconds /without/ pressing the hour/minute buttons switches in and out of a daylight savings time adjustment (+1 hour). 5Terrible product and instructions I purchased this product to turn on a light 3x per week. The instructions are unclear and not user friendly. They seem translated from another language or written like a technical manual written by an engineer instead of instructions to an end user. After spending a frustrating hour programming the timer- I resorted to trial and error while reading the instructions (Yes, they were that unclear). I plugged it in and... It doesn't turn the light on or off when set on auto. The program menu is difficult and not user friendly and the instructions unclear and confusing. I have a PhD and am technologically saavy. However, this item truly is a disappointment on every level. 1
