Customer Reviews

I prefer this over my counter I'm happy I have spacious counters, but it pains me to dirty them. I like keeping them clean. What do I use this mat for?1) I knead bread or roll out dough (for cinnamon rolls, besides pie crusts) on it. If I forget to grease it a bit, it gets kind of sticky, which can be annoying. However, I try to place the edge of the mat under my heavy kitchen aid mixer so it doesn't move around. When I first used this, the mat didn't move around, but after a few uses, it started to. I tried one of the reviewers' suggestions: to wet the bottom of it. It doesn't always work. That's why I now use my kitchenaid mixer to hold it in place.2) I roll my bread dough into a certain size, so the measurements are really useful to have. My bread looks way better now.3) I pretty much use this as my "baking counter".4) It's easy to clean, dries fast, and I can roll it up and store it away.Besides wishing it didn't move around a bit, I wish it was a bit bigger, too.Overall, if you slightly grease it, stuff won't stick. Stuff shouldn't stick as it says it won't, but it does sometimes. I think it may depend on what you're working with, though. 4Durable and High Quality I was shopping for replacement silicone mats -- my Silpat mats had become very worn out -- when I came across reviews for the Fox Run silicone baking mats. I am so happy I decided to try these out instead of the Silpat. Our household of four adults are heavy kitchen users, and probably use these mats multiple times per week (for baking pizza, cookies and veggie burgers, roasting vegetables, etc). Like many of the other reviewers here, I have found that the Fox Run mats have held up much better than our Silpat brand mats which developed frayed edges, cracks and tiny holes after a few years of use. The Fox Run mats are a bit thicker and are more durable, even though they are cheaper than the Silpat brand! I did find these mats have turned brown with use, but it doesn't effect their performance. 5Great product I just use this for rolling dough and it works great. Rolling gluten free tortillas stuck a little because they break so easy. I just lifted up the corner of the mat much like extracting tortillas from a press and it was fine. It sticks firm to the counter, and cleanup is easy. I dry it in the laundry room on a pants hanger. The eccentric circles are much easier to read than the concentric circles that make me dizzy. My wife loves the conversion tables as most of her recipes are metric. 5Incredible I've got to say, I don't think I can live without this little thing I didn't even know existed until about a month ago. I'm totally floored by how well it works! It's really nice not having to use foil, parchment paper, shortening, pam spray,or anything like that. This baking mat really simplified everything for me. Cookies, biscuits, fish, even pizza came out excellent and slide right off! It doesn't seem like you really NEED to cut anything on the baking pad, I literally just tilt the pad when I pull it out and whatever is on it slides effortlessly onto the cutting board. In fact I am kind of worried maybe I won't be holding it straight one of these days and everything will slide onto the floor. I can't get over that I don't have to grease everything up anymore, it makes me want to cry a tear of joy haha. Only thing that kind of creeped me out is that there were a few gnarly long black hairs stuck to the mat when I pulled it out. Extra incentive to scrub it extra clean before first use! Some may have mentioned these points before, but I will risk the repeat because I am too lazy to sift through the rest of the comments (yes lazy! that's why this pad is so awesome, I can be a lazy baker).First of all, it does get really hot. You can't try and grab it by the edges like you would tin foil. It also STAYS hot for a while, so watch your fingers! (and other extremities)Second, before I used it, I washed it (duh) and threw it in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 425 degrees. I don't know why 425 degrees, I just felt like it. The first time you bake with it, it smokes a bit so it may be a good idea to burn off all the stinky before actually putting food on it. It probably won't kill you not to (*probably*), but at the very least it's much nicer to smell your fresh baked yummies than fumes. I don't notice a smell to the mat afterwards.Huge fan of this thing. Saves time, money, and calories! 5It's slipped once or twice, but still serves its purpose My boyfriend has his qualms with this mat, because the math for wet and dry measurements apparently aren't consistent....but he's a math person, so we leave him to his thing.I, on the other hand, am trying to be a baking person. I need to be able to roll dough to certain sizes, and I certainly need something that is not my countertop to do it. I've used this a couple of times already: once, to make a 9" pie crust, and a second time to roll out some bread dough. Both times, it almost completely served its purpose. Unfortunately, it did slip a couple of times, but it might be the shiny, slick nature of my countertop. It's not enough of an inconvenience that I wouldn't recommend it. I feel much better having this thing around. 4Great Baking Results I have used several brands of Silicone Baking Mats in varying price ranges, from You-Get-What-You-Pay-For-Cheap to More-Than-I-Should-Have-Spent-Expensive. The Fox Run Silicone Baking Mat is comparable to more expensive baking mats, and it's very reasonably priced. In the few weeks I've had this mat, I've used it to make tofu, several types of cookies, biscotti, and focaccia. It's performed well on all occasions: nothing sticks and everything bakes evenly. It's thicker than some of the other mats I have, and I like the heavier weight. Some baking mats are very sticky-feeling, but this one is not.So far, this mat hasn't retained food odors; however, I haven't cooked anything particularly pungent on it (I keep this one for cookies, breads, etc...I use another one for foods with garlic, onions, etc). The one con that I've noticed with this mat is that it stains more easily than my others-- the first batch of chocolate chip cookies I made left telltale chip marks all over the mat. But, since stains don't affect the mat's performance, I didn't take off a star on my rating.Try the Fox Run Silicone Baking Mat--I'll certainly buy another in the future if the price remains as reasonable as it is now. 5Nice, But Not Big Enough I like this baking mat as far as it goes. It needs improvements. It needs to be a little thicker, and the measurements need to be a little bigger all around, both wider and longer. I returned the first one I got because it bubbles up almost like it has layers. This one does it also. Very strange. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, so I decided to live with it. It feels fragile to me. One reviewer said she had hers for 15 years and I have trouble believing that this mat would last that long! I use this brand for baking and love it, which is why I wanted to try the brand for a pastry mat. There isn't enough of a margin for rolling out cinnamon rolls or pie dough, the main reason I bought it. My dough goes all the way to the edge and I have a mess on the counter. I don't like that. King Arthur sells a bigger one, but it costs more and their shipping is outrageous! 3Basic Paster/Baking Mat - nice big size Feels weird. Since it has all the size circles for pizza, tarts, pies etc. I figured to get it for rolling out dough. Mostly I make shaped sugar cookies and don't like to roll directly on my counter-tops. This is only one of the uses for this item. The box it came in seems to think it is mostly for using as a baking mat to put on a pan in a hot stove -- In my book, that's what parchment paper and oil stray is for. I don't think I'd feel comfortable putting this in the oven tho it is advertised to do that. 4Super non-skid! Grips the surface on which it is placed to have great control over rolled out or cut out dough. Worth buying! It's definitely non-skid, which will make for easier management when rolling or cutting dough or cakes on it. I'd like the surface that contacts the dough to be a little less shiny/skid-free because dough sticks to this without frequent flouring. But I am very impressed with the fact that it comes rolled out of the box directly onto my work space area (solid wood) and immediately and perfectly grips the surface so it doesn't slide around on you. I'd suggest putting parchment or waxed paper on top of this so you can see the lines if needed and then make an easier transfer from this mat onto the pan or plate where the dough will be used. I'd definitely buy this specific rolling mat again. 4Never lose time baking again. I've never used these before, and I regret all of the time I've lost scrubbing baking dishes clean. Now those days are over for me. These clean up easily with soap and water, and the baking sheets are spotless. The really great thing about these mats are you can roll out the dough on the mat and place the mat directly onto the baking sheet to go into the oven. Just lift and go. It's really great for making pizzas. Roll the dough, move the mat to the baking sheet without losing the dough's shape or toppings, and bake. I even use the pizza cutter on it without damaging the mat.Bonus: everything comes out beautifully. I haven't had any dough stick to the mat. Everything we've baked has an even, tawny color on the bottom. 5
