White balance is not consistent across different Fotodiox softboxesI have four Fotodiox softboxes (24x36", large octo and two 12x56"). However, sometimes I wish I had gone with another brand.The construction is okay, everything works as it should.However, what makes this particular softbox (24x36) unusable to me is that it messes up the white balance. I usually shoot with two more softboxes from Fotodiox (the stip ones) and the WB is not consistent across the softboxes. Maybe the material is different or from a different batch, but the end result is - when you photograph a white item that is lit from two sides by two different boxes, you get half-yellow, half-blue item.I wish Fotodiox would make sure that in the end all light modifiers produce the same WB when used with same strobes. 2Amazing value, unique size & shapeOk, something's going on here with the reviews - seems these are mainly for an octagon softbox, but (as of now) the item description is for a 12" x 80" strip light, which I purchased.This thing's an amazing value - Fotodiox has really gotten its act together. I'd compare this to the industry standards (Chimera and Photoflex) but neither of them makes a strip light near this size. (Chimera makes a tall strip, but it's like 20" wide). For this look, I've been relying on a Westscott Scrim Jim Frame with a custom-sewn strip light. This is far more convenient, and nothing beats the drama of a big, thin strip of very soft light - and at 6.6 feet tall, this should bring the drama.I purchased my first photoflex softbox close to 20 years ago and I've used all kinds of them in my career. For starters - assembling ANY softbox is a small war, and the larger, the harder. This one is no exception, but it did come with very complete instructions. But it takes strong hands to get one of these together.The build quality of this beats Photoflex's strobe boxes, and is close to their hot-light boxes. The hot boxes use metal rods, as does this - but these are about twice the thickness - my Pflex metal rods look like crushed spiders (and my fiberglass rods are covered in splinters). Fotodiox really wins on the rods. The fabric is thick, the silver is thick, and it's all sewn very strong. On top of that you get a VERY legit grid (a medium photoflex grid costs more than this box WITH its grid). The grid quality is an upgrade from the chinese knockoffs as well - the border is double-thick and sewn very well - it seems equal to my Photoflex grids. That alone is a shock.This sucker's taller than me, and with the thick fabric, I'd think hard about using it with a Bowens mount or on a Novatron or something - for my Speedotron BlackLine heads, it seems fine and sturdy. It came with a good-quality speedring, that's properly sized for the box (I have small strip boxes with speedrings so big, you can't close the fabric on top). Rod-holes in the speedring are standard, not the weird "one is a loop" thing that is a big fail.The instructions rate this for up to 500 watts continuous light, too - I have some mogul-based HIDs at 400 watts (they put out about 1.5k of 5500k) adapted to Photoflex Starlights, so that's a nice bonus, and there are vent flaps on the sides. Only cheap thing about this? The carrying bag is flimsy crap - exactly like Photoflex's flimsy crap bags.The whole thing was a real shock to me - I've bought some ebay special chinese boxes to get sizes I can't find from the pro companies, and they're functional but cheap and likely ultimately disposable - but damn, Fotodiox has really upped their game with this line. Recommended. 5Balcar = Buff for less moneyFor the cost, it's a well made and easy to assemble stripbox. I was expecting the eggcrate to fall apart in my hands from reading the other reviews, but they must have improved it. I even tried to tear a small corner for future reference and was not able to do so with a moderate amount of force.A screw is missing on one of the speedrings. I have extras, so no a big deal.It would have been nice to have pockets for the poles the length of the box, but it works the way it is with just small pockets at the tips. Those were the hardest part of the installation, as they are very tight and the rod would not insert easily, but perhaps that's a good thing, as they are less likely to slip out.Tip: if you're buying for Paul C. Buff lights, buy the Balcar version instead of the one's listed for Buff - they're cheaper and exactly the same thing. They fit tightly for such a large box, but I don't see any sag or pulling away from the light on my Einsteins. 4Excellent quality, builds easy enough.I needed another gridded softbox for a shoot I have planned, so I ordered this one to try it out. No reviews, not much info, but a great price and worth the chance to test it out. It arrived and I had it together in about ten minutes. The velcro around the edges left plenty of room for the grid, but easily removable in case you want softer light. I can't think of anything that could be improved upon with this except maybe the name on the side. I hate advertising for anyone. But I really do love this softbox.Pros:Great lightSuper soft with two diffusers (a smaller inside one comes with it)Easily assembledSturdy, doesn't feel flimsy at allCons:Doesn't break down easily, so it's easier to keep it assembled.Didn't come with a ring for Einstein/Alien Bee, so I had to buy one. 5Missing part, major light leaks.I had 2 issues when the light box arrived...I order 2 of these for Photogenic light heads and the product came with a universal mountable speedring that takes different inserts for different heads.One of the packages came with 2 inserts and one of them fit. The second strip box package came with 1 insert, and it doesn't fit. It came with the one with a curved lip and was shorter and was pushed up agaianst my lighthead.The photo is missleading; The lighthead connected to the softbox, In the photo is all blacked out, yet when in reality this dedicated speedring is exposed and visible and where all the light spill happens. There is no cover thats included for this problem.If you pull the material that barely can cover over it, the sharp corners will last a matter of a few uses before they rip, or the velcro gives.That the back covers don't cover over the speed ring, and only butts up below it. This causes major light spill and loss of light performance as well.I would give this a 3 Star if I didn't have the missing piece.I had a shoot following my delivery and was not able to use the softbox which killed my shoot. N ot having one makes the other one pretty much useless. These are specific lighting softboxes and not easy to replicate another lightbox without grids and duplicate the light. So now I have 1 that works, and 1 that doesn't, but not having the pair is like wearing 1 shoe!Also the photos in the listing are incorrect. The dedicated speedring that comes with the set is not a round piece thats round on the outside. It is more a star shape as all the connection points have a post sticking out. I mention this as it completely scratched the interior of my car side liners. If they were as pictured, it would not cause any scratches to get hung on.Another point which I think Amazon can correct is that these are NOT the same as rounf softboxes. The round ones actually come with the rear cover, and they should be in a separate review listing.I'm not sure if I should thank Amazon for the fast shipping as I have Prime, but I paid $14 more for having arrive early. 1READ ME!Do yourself a favor and go to Fotodiox - fotodiox.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/17000002162-pro-softbox-assembly-use - or to their YouTube channel and watch the softbox assembly video instead of following the manual. It saves time and frustration and you ll put this thing together with minimal effort. I didn t do that and wound up wrestling the softbox! Assembly challenges aside, this softbox is a great value for the money. The material is sturdy and the unit is well-constructed. The silver interior reflects light well and the baffle diffuses it nicely. There are vents on the sides to dissipate heat and the included mounting ring is strong, well-made and fits my Elinchrom strobes perfectly. The ring also allows the softbox to rotate, a feature that comes in very handy. One issue is excess fabric extending past the mounting ring which interferes with the softbox coupling to the strobe - just open the hook and loop slits, attach the softbox to the light and then close the slits again. Also, the outer diffuser cover doesn t quite meet the corners leaving small gaps through which light may leak. Gaffers tape will help, if necessary. Neither of these issues is a deal-breaker for me. Overall, this is an excellent value for the money, especially for a hobbyist, and an Elinchrom-branded 24 by 36 softbox would have cost three or four times what I paid for the Fotodiox. Satisfied customer! 4Good quality for the priceAssembly and disassembly was a little bit cumbersome the first time, I followed the instructions rather than their YouTube video which appears to be more appropriate for the larger octagons. It is very small once it is in the bag.The carrying bag is really flimsy, pretty much a glorified plastic shopping bag but it will do, other than that quality is great for what you're paying, material is thick, it almost feels like leatherete, rods are flexible but seem strong.Most importantly for me, it can be used with multiple speedlites (Yongnuo 600 ex rt II). I got the Bowens mount so I could use a S-type bracket for Bowens with the 4 speedlite adapter that is sold for this bracket (they come in Godox or Neewer). There is plenty of room between the first baffle and the speed ring to mount them, also if you don't tighten the screws that attach the speed ring with the actual Bowen mount too much, you can rotate the octagon easily so you can find a good angle for your flash so they don't touch the rods or the ring.Great product. 4Not worth the price!I got it as an "Amazon Wareware Deal" for $40. It was missing rods, extremely poorly packaged, but did get a full refund... but was told to go buy the rods from elsewhere or buy it again (which was not possible since it was the only one available for Amazon Warehouse). So it sounds like the Amazon Warehouse Deals is returned defective items or missing pieces and resale it without mentioning those details until you get it.But as for the product itself... it was difficult to find someone breaking and setting this up. Only one person did it and she couldn't set it up fully without someone else. So setup/break down... itself does not make this product $120 brand new. I'd say at best $50. I am trying to put it together now and I am in 50F room and sweating from it. I could have gotten a quick break down stripbox, yes, but not very many have long thin stripbox options, only wide which isn't a stripbox, its a rectangular softbox. 1Looks professional. Unbelievable value on these.The quality on these is excellent. They look like they should cost much more. I did end up buying the egg crate grid from a separate seller. The brand was Godox but it worked great on these too because they are standard size. The material feels durable and does not feel cheap at all. It actually feels a little rubbery which is good quality. I read reviews on how people had a hard time putting this together. Well those people probably also have a hard time with their shoe laces :-) I can put this unit together in about 5 minutes with everything on it. You just need to make sure you have the ends in the correct position because the thick end goes into the speed ring. I will definitely be buying more Fotodiox softboxes. 5they skipped the quality control on the speedrings.ordered the item in a bowens mount. It didn't fit any of my 5 bowens mount lights. the inner ring of the speed ring was beat up and tarnished.typical chicom softbox quality. Not top notch but acceptable.diameter of the inner speedring is different than any other softbox i have to include a fotodiox strip bank. It is not compatible with any of the other speedrings i have on hand.I'm really irritated. I have a shoot setup for monday and this would have been an excellent modifier for portraiture.i'll update this review when a replacement shows up.update:So amazon replaced the orginal softbox. The included speedring still sucks. It is a 3 piece design. 2 of the pieces only fit together with a friction lock. It doesn't hold it very well. It holds it so poorly that the speed ring separated causing the softbox to fall to the ground.It killed the modeling light and flashtube on my monolight. F- you fotodiox for putting such a crappy speedring with the softbox. 1
