Customer Reviews

A good device with improved functionality Some of the reviewers seem astonished to find imperfections in a tiny device that allows a swimmer to hear music under water. I'm an early adopter of this technology (first one back in 2005, I think) and I remain awed that it is possible at all.I deducted one star for the decision to remove the playlist feature and having to worry about exposed electrodes, but added it back because of the other improvements. Finis? If you're listening, please do a firmware upgrade that allows playlists, and consider changing the design to have a removable rubber cover that could keep the electrodes dry. Of course we know we're supposed to dry the device and clean the electrodes after use, but the task will get neglected. The new charging dock has positive and negative aspects. It's good that there is no longer a capped USB plug hanging off the cable, just waiting to get caught in your suit straps. I have more confidence that the electrodes are dry before I connect them to the charger. But a magnetic dock is never ideal with a laptop; most of us move the computer around, dislodging the connection and getting that snitty computer message about improper disconnection.I checked with the company and was assured that wall charging is fine. I have a multi-slot charger that delivers the correct voltage, amperage and so forth, so I've used it, thereby solving the problem of having the device fall off the dock. For the people who said the device does not hold a charge, I wonder if they followed the instructions to charge for 24 hours before first use? One of my tech-savvy friends gave me the full lecture on that, complete with finger shaking, so I'm careful to do it.The new button configuration is more intuitive and operation is simplified. The old layout was on a vertical plane, making it hard to remember whether "up" was louder/advance or softer/back up. And now you can back up to a previous song as opposed to just going back to the beginning of a song that's playing. Instead of clips for goggle straps we now have a more complicated track into which the strap must be coaxed. Good news: this device is not going anywhere. Bad news: attaching takes some fiddling. So don't wait until you're standing poolside, blind without your glasses, and watching the lanes fill up while you curse. I'm leaving the device connected to the goggles for recharging. At least my goggles are getting washed more often. As for the reviews saying that the computer does not recognize the device or that songs won't play, I suspect the song problem lies in the encoding, and device recognition may be a user problem. I used the first model of the SwimP3 that came with an instruction manual clearly stating that the device was not Mac compatible, but I was able to work around it. I used Disk Utility to reformat it, which allowed recognition. And I had to convert all my songs to a more basic file type. So I have gotten used to a different music management system: instead of using iTunes, I keep a folder of songs that are properly encoded and use them when I want to change the music selection, although frankly the device holds so much music that I doubt I'll be making changes. Another word to the wise: the old devices did not recognize the removal of a song. You had to erase the device and then reload. I haven't had to do that yet, so I'm not sure, but if you get a message that the device is full, you may have to reformat. The Finis customer service people have been helpful to me-- I still feel guilty about getting a replacement unit because I insisted there was something wrong with my player and only later figured out it was my fault.Sometimes it feels like the sporting goods industry only recognizes cyclists and runners. Good job, Finis, and thanks for paying attention to those of us who swim for exercise. 5good concept | bad product | poor customer service Bought this underwater mp3 player last week with high hopes, despite a lot of negative reviews of unit failing within three to six months.Received the unit last week, after charging and attempting to load songs, was very surprised to see preloaded with a handful of songs from a very famous artist. Thoughts of receiving a used item had crossed my mind.Contacting finis customer service was a challange. Tried reaching them during their business hours/time zone through phone, no answer from customer service so left a voicemail with contact info - never heard back. Attempted again through their website's 'livechat' option. Waited over two hours, Status 'waiting for operator' never changed. Finally, left a note through their 'contact us' section of their website. Eventually, got a canned email reply stating issues with website chat portion. Was really surprised their customer service never offered to exchange or contact them to make things right for all the hassle.Product AND customer service failed. Returned Finis Duo and just ordered a product similar in concept from different company.product rating = 0/10 (didn't work out of the box)concept = 8/10 (like the fact no headphones are required, used bone conduction)customer service = 0/10 (not responsive to customer. Not standing behind their own product to offer exchange, etc.) 1What they don't tell you... I've used every SwiMP3 model Finis has come out with since the beginning. It's addicting in the sense that once you get introduced to this style of patent pended bone conduction audio, it's hard to imagine going back. And, with previous models, there have been many shortcomings as it relates to product durability and the infamous ability to connect your device to the computer much less a USB charging hub...Here is what they don't tell you because they probably don't even know- the contacts on the unit are prone to mineral build up- to the point of no longer being able to connect or charge the unit. I've had conversations with their tech support department and they have sent me replacement chargers and even issued a RMA for a replacement. NO NEED- if you are having connection issues- here is the ultimate tip I can share...Go to a hardware store and buy some CLR- the calcium, lime rust stuff you use for other things. Fill it in short glass just high enough to submerge the side with the contacts (only about 1/2 inch or so deep). Soak your unit for 4-6 hours and then rinse- the contacts are as good as new!!! I stumbled across this solution when I was using CLR to clean the spray nozzle of the kitchen that had a lot of build up- who knew. No more need for a RMA, and the unit connects to the dock (magnet or no magnet) every time (make sure it's dry of course). As for their rubbing alcohol method with a qtip- tried it- does not work. But think about it- you wouldn't use alcohol to remove your mineral build up on anything else, so why use it on your unit you are swimming with?!Other tips- loop just one of the 2 straps to the unit of your goggles that have double straps. That way- he unit is secure enough to be stable through flip turns but does not mess with your goggles leaking depending on how they are positioned on your head. In past versions and even in this one, my goggles are prone to leaking if I put both straps over the unit.I have done the infamous Big Shoulders 5k open water swim and the monster swims (100x 100s on set interval) with this unit and never had an issue following the tips I shared above. I swim masters and hit about 4-6 practices a week depending on if I'm doing doubles for part of the season. 5UPDATED I bought the first one they came out with..loved it!! Swam with it for years until it died. I didn't buy the second one as I seen all the problems it had, plus i didn't like that it sat on the back of my head. I did however buy the Duo....well it worked great for awhile, then it wouldn't charge. I came back into this site to do a review for that, and found there was a "new docking system" one that had a magnet. Finis sadly did not let me know about this problem or the fact that they took care of it. It was up to me. So I sent in for the upgrade, giving them my numbers on the unit as they asked.I used this for a few month, and now as I try to get it to charge it just won't charge. The best solution was a gentleman's idea of using a clip to hold it together and NOT move it. this worked, THANK YOU. Now it's time for some new music, different music.....l now my computer won't recognize it. There is NO icon to be found. I can't get it to work on any computer. So here I am again....... saying DO'NT BUY THIS!!!! I don't like giving reviews like this. I really like the concept of it sitting on the bone, as I don't like things in my ears, I don't even like a cap over my ears when I swim.So for now I swim w/o music. :( Until someone comes up with a better one, I am tired of messing with Finis. Sorry Finis you had a great thing going with your first one. I shouted that one to the roof tops and my friends bought it, this one I tell them not to.unhappy customer,Sandra LeeUpdate, I still use a clip to charge it, even w/the stronger magnetic charger that FINIS sent. now the on/off button don't work. It does..sometimes. I will mess w/it before a swim, not getting it to work, only to come back and find it playing. :( This has been worthless to me.3.17.17 I contacted FINIS, because again I had problems with my player. Finis asked me to send them the product. They (FINIS) sent me a new one. SO far, I have not had any problems. BUT today is only the 18th. :D I was able to get it to charge, it held well in it's charger, I was able to up load songs to it w/o a problem. It turned on and off well. It plays well... now if it will do all that while I swim. :DMAYBE JUST MAYBE FINIS has gotten all the problems fixed. :D I up my starts to 3.... i'll come back in a few months and let you know what I think, as I swim w/it and keep playing with it.7.5.17 - I am back for an update. Again it won't hold a charge, either that or the on off button don't work. I again can't get it to play. Dropping down to ONE star. 1they said it was a bad batch "making me pay to return shipping" and sent ... Got the 1st one, worked for about 1 month with minor use, then stopped being recognized by laptop and stopped charging. contacted Finis, they said it was a bad batch "making me pay to return shipping" and sent me a new one with "same batch number, 031215" ! this new one also worked well during 1 full charge and had stopped being recognized by laptop and being charged. Finis solution? rub it with alcohol and brush and soap and you name it... still does not work? spend another $10 to ship it back to us and we will test it.if your product is not working and you know there is something wrong with it that everyone is aware of of stop shipping it back to people. Also, why do you I have to pay for return shipping of your defected product? It is like a monthly membership program... 1Dock is awful, don't buy this. I swim about four hours per week, and prefer to listen to music while I do. I have been using the Finis Neptune for a couple of years, and I like it. The one flaw with the Neptune is the clunky player that has to be attached to the goggle strap. I was excited to see that the Duo got rid of this. I used the Duo for about three weeks. At first, it was hard to find the right fit, as the new attachment mechanism gives less freedom to the goggle strap. The effect of this is that when you are swimming, the drag on on the "speakers" moves them around, pulling on the goggle strap and letting water in or pinching your nose. But eventually I figured out how to arrange the straps and put them on in a way that fixed this issue. The biggest problem with the Duo is the docking mechanism. It just doesn't work. It's a good idea, but it was not functional. I don't know if mine was defectively produced or it's the design, but the docking occurs by a magnetic connection between pins on the USB cable and contact points on the player. On mine, the two middle pins were recessed, or about 75% of the length of the two outside pins. I don't know if this is what caused my issues, but it was incredibly difficult to get mine to connect. Maybe one out of every ten times I tried to connect it actually worked. But then when it did work, the slightest nudge disconnected it. On two occasions I had to spend fifteen minutes just getting the player to connect--thirty minutes of precious time that could have been used swimming. It was so bad that if it was sitting on my desk plugged into my computer and I ever so slightly nudged the desk, it would disconnect. So, I'm returning this and recharging the Neptune. Don't buy this; you'll just be wasting your time until you return it, too. 2Great way to pass the time in the pool! This is a really solid upgrade from the Neptune and a great way to pass the laps. After owning a Neptune for several years swimming without music is torture the few times I forget to charge before practice.Pros:1. Got rid of that stupid screen on the back of your head (who needs a screen on the back of their head???)2. I was very skeptical of the new goggle clips but they actually work very well once you get them figured out, much harder to remove / attach than the Neptune's clips but like most others I just ended up leaving them attached to my goggles permanently.3. Great sound quality and durability (I've had mine for about a year with zero issues).Cons:1. You still press the button closest to the back of your head to skip to the next song while you hold the button closest to the face to increase the volume, seems really backwards to me but not a big deal at all once you get used to it.2. Why god WHY don't these have Bluetooth, how does that not make sense?3. The wire between the "pods" is very long for what I need but I understand you need to fit a variety of heads and it's better to have too much than not enough. 4This would be a great product except for the electrical connection corrosion issues. I had the predecessor to this - the SwimP3 for several years. I decided to replace it because the o-ring had been leaking and the connectors were heavily corroded. So, since I had such good luck with the previous product, I decided to go with their new generation product, the Duo. This would be a great product except instead of using an electrical conductor that is resistant to corrosion (gold plating maybe?) they apparently chose something that does not do well with chlorine. After 20 hours of swimming, my computer would not recognize the unit or charge it. Turned out not to be a PC problem, but corrosion on the contacts between the charger and the Duo. I have found that I have to use a drop of vinegar on the contact and then rub it with a toothpick to clear off the corrosion so that it will work again. This would be a five-star product if it weren't for this problem but after many years of producing a swimming mp3 player, they should know better. 3Great device, but no longer connects to my computer. This is great for swimming laps, it is nice not to worry about earplugs falling out of my ears, but after a few swims it no longer connects to my Mac. It still charges, but doesn't connect to either of my computers even when fully charged.I sent an email about my problem with this device and got no response, don't be fooled by the comments from the company, they are not anxious to resolve problems. 1Great concept, VERY BAD QUALITY! This product line is horrible. The concept is great, but the quality is extremely poor. I've bought several in the past so I'd have music while I swim (which is great), but I've become tired of having them break down. For me, the problem has usually been the wiring which seems to get damaged and stop sending a signal to one ear or the other. I've owned the first generation to the last, and none of them lasted even as long as a year, and they aren't exactly cheap. I've had to send several back for repairs, only to have them break down again. This company has had quite a bit of negative feedback because of the poor quality, and just doesn't seem to get the message that they have to make a BETTER QUALITY unit, not a unit with more features. It would even be worth spending a bit more money on a unit that could actually last for two years, but the company doesn't seem willing or capable of doing so. I do not recommend wasting your money, until they can make a quality product, and I don't know how I'd know if they did, because I've given up on them. So be it. 1
