    Cheap but useful Let's say you just bought a new Mac. And you realize it has a Firewire 800 slot. And you have a few Firewire 400 hardrive enclosures you'd rather not get rid of.Instead of going out and buying a new set of Firewire400 to Firewire800 cables to use with your mac and existing Firewire hard drives, this is the economical solution to your problems. Just buy this and you can continue to use your old FW400 cables and save yourself some money.The adapter has a FW400 slot at one end where you plug in your existing FW400 cable and a FW800 plug at the other end which you plug into your Mac's FW800 slot. The adapter itself is chunky, and is a tight fit in the slot right next to my mini DP to DVI adapter but it does fit and it works.There have been no random disconnects or data dropouts during my usage of the adapter to connect my external hard drives and transfer data to and from my mac. I have two of these and both work perfectly on my computer.Considering the fact that other companies sell a single Firewire 800 to 400 adapter for prices ranging between 10 to 12 dollars, this is definitely a good value buy at $6.99However, if you're looking for a flexible product that fits more easily next to your Mini DP to Mini DVI adapter, the moshi FireWire 800 to 400 adapter may be an option you should consider.Hope this helps! 4this solves the problem There are two kinds of FireWire, 400 and 800. And especially if you have "older" computers- and by older I mean you did not buy them yesterday- you will run into this problem. This little device will solve those problems: just plug it in. Since this was ($8?) well within what I was prepared to spend, I didn't price-shop. I did notice that the $20 option offered at my local big box electronic retailer (which is almost never your best buy) is $20 something and comes with a cable- why? Obviously, since you have owned a computer for a while, you HAVE a FireWire cable, what you don't have is a cable with 400 on one end and 800 on another. And now you do. So this little thing added to your existing cable is all you need. 5It may work for something, but didn't work for me. I have a small Iomega FW400 drive that I had photos on, that I wanted to hook to my new desktop Mac that has FW800. Although the adapter is advertised as plug-n-play, the drive did not show up on my desktop Mac using the adapter.I hasten to add that I am not an expert peripheral connection, but I tried my darndest. The drive works fine (tested on another computer); there appeared to be no missing drivers (searched for them); I tried shutting down the Mac and starting with it plugged in; I tried to use Disk Utility to mount it; and this was the second item of this kind that I tried. No luck. The light on the drive lit up, it whirred for 30 seconds, then stopped spinning; never showed up anywhere. Amazon tech support agreed with me that if it didn't work after all of that, it wasn't a workable connection, and I got my money back.Just a heads up. Perhaps for some machines and some peripherals it will work fine. It didn't work for me.Just to add: had good tech support,and appreciated the help. 1Great for using those older Firewire devices through the newer Firewire ports. Mine connect external iSght cameras to some of my Macs.The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that they stick out from the Firewire port a long ways (almost 2" long) and thus are candidates to be banged, hung on and broken. I was using the ones from Apple, which were identical in size, shape and function, but cost 4 x as much. I Apple adapters all died because of sticking out and being accidentally banged too many times. 4It Works. This product works. I was able to convert my old mini dv camcorder tapes to mp4 on my Macbook Pro. I used amazon brand IEEE 1394 cable then connect it to this product then to Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter. I was so happy, that I was able to view videos of my wife giving birth to my first son, my son first day home from the hospital, etc. tears of joy after seeing the video i created 10 years ago. Thanks to this product, the video was converted successfully and in high quality. I recommend this product. 5Excellent for Legacy Cameras I'm using this adapter to connect a professional Panasonic camera from the late 2000s that utilizes firewire. This adapter is necessary if you want to connect a legacy piece of hardware using a firewire 400 cable, which is what I had, to a device that only has a firewire 800 port. Using this in tandem with the Apple thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter allows my camera and my iMac to communicate flawlessly. Does exactly what I need. 5Kept my old audio interface running I bought this adapter to use with two other adapters so I could use an older Firewire 400 audio interface with a new Mac Mini. I have never had much luck in using more than one adapter in series, but this worked flawlessly and does not appear to have introduced any additional latency. It is connected to a FW800 > Thunderbolt 2 adapter, which is attached to a Thunderbolt 2 > Thunderbolt 3 adapter which is attached to the Mini. Again, surprised it worked but am glad that it did, saved me having to shell out a fortune for a comparable rackmount interface. Have been running it 10+ hours daily for about 6 weeks now, with no issues. Highly recommended. 5Just what I needed. Needed this to connect between older external drive and newer MacBook Pro. I purchased an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, an elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter, and a Tripp Lite FireWire IEEE 1394 Cable (6pin/6pin) 6-ft.(F005-006) all together, hoping to connect my old kerosene-powered LACIE external hard drive (Firewire 400, 6pin) to my 15" Macbook Pro Thunderbolt input.Connected one end of the 6pin Firewire 400 cable to the old LACIE hard drive, plugged the other end of the 6pin Firewire 400 cable into the elago 400-800 adapter, then plugged the Firewire 800 end of the elago adapter into the Apple Firewire 800-Thunderbolt adapter, and then plugged the Thunderbolt output of the Apple adapter into the 15" Macbook Pro (all hot).The LACIE drive immediately appeared on the desktop, and both reading and transferring files has worked perfectly from the first try. The Macbook Pro is a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7, running Mac OSx 10.8.5. I'm thrilled that this actually works, and very quickly too. 5Hassle-free and BINGO! Okay, I use windows, Linux and Mac. For various different applications.And I want to continue using my excellent Canon Vixia HV-30 MiniDV camera that is ONLY 5 or 6 years old. To me that's NEW!I upgraded to a new Mac machine (which is my film- and infotainment only system) iMac 2,9 i5 and came upon Mac's backwards compatibility issue, this one of having NO FIRE WIRE PORTS at all. To say the least, I was sceptical.So I chained up the Thunderbolt to FW 800Then this little "elago" adaptor FW800 to 400And into it I stuck the old FW 400 cable to the camera. I had to "shove" it in, but that was ok.> BINGO! 5
