Customer Reviews

Horrible product, worse support Would give this 0 if I could. I had 2 of these. Both would lock up after a few days to the point where you couldn't even access their web config page from the same network. Only choice I had to get them running again was to unplug them and plug them back in. Not easy when using them as surveillance cameras mounted high up.I contacted D-Link customer support and they tried to blame the issues on my ISP not having high enough upload speed. Sorry, but if I'm on the same network and cannot access it's web config page that means the issue is internal not external. And when the only devices that cannot communicate on the network are the cameras it means there's an issue with the cameras. I wasted weeks with them blaming my ISP. The cameras are now in the trash as it's too late to return and D-Link doesn't seem willing to accept the fact that the cameras are faulty to do an exchange (been too long to return to Amazon). While all this was going on, I ordered 2 more to setup at a friends house thinking I just got a bad batch - it happens. Nope. One camera has the same issue locking up, the other had a faulty day/night sensor and wouldn't automatically switch between day and night modes which lead to 100% black night-time images. There was enough ambient light in the room where if I manually switched modes the picture was perfect but we needed an auto-switching camera so this was useless.4 of 4 back cameras. Horrible customer service on the D-Link side of things. Will never buy a D-Link product again after this. 1I would like this camera if it worked. I would like this camera if it worked. The main problem with it is that the video signal randomly just stops transmitting quite often. You have to reboot the camera to get it working again. It isn't that the camera shuts down, goes offline or disconnects from wifi, it is online and you can connect to it... just no video. This makes it very unreliable and frustrating. I am able to connect into my home from work and reboot it so it is more of a huge pain in that respect but what is worse is when I am traveling and want to use the phone app and it just doesn't work. All I get is a black screen. I can tell this is not a problem with the phone or web app because if you log on to the camera's web connection from the local network it is not displaying any video either. This happens at least once or twice per day and sometimes as many as ten times in a day. Since the main purpose of me having a camera is to be able to view a live video feed whenever I want, this issue makes it pretty useless. This camera has maintained this issue from the start and throughout many firmware updates. If it would just function it wouldn't be bad. It wouldn't be fantastic as I find a lot of other issues with it.. but I could live with the rest if it would just work.I thought the setup instructions were terrible and the whole setup process quite difficult. I had to call tech support to get it going, which may not sound that abnormal but I have worked in IT for 30 years. Technology is usually my friend and the amount of times I normally have to call support while setting something like this up is extremely rare. The reason for the initial call was because the instructions were missing a vital piece of information needed for setup which was actually to be found hidden in some obscure spot ON THE BOX. However, as it turned out it was good that I had called support because they then walked me through the rest of the convoluted setup process that would have no doubt had me struggling anyway. The video/sound quality is nothing to write home about but decent enough. The phone app is great if I'm only streaming video but when I turn on the sound both the sound and video get very choppy. Having the website connection is very nice as I like to monitor it while I'm at work and I just leave it up in my browser and check on it every once in awhile. I tried using the sound/motion alert settings initially and spent a lot of time fiddling with it but they just never worked quite right for me. Which is too bad because those were one of the main reasons I chose this model. Now I just leave them off, when at work leave it connected in my web browser and check it every once in awhile. Since I do that I leave the sound off in the website app, however, that annoyingly does not function some of the time. Even though the sound is turned off and has been off and the little icon shows that it is off, it seems to forget it is supposed to be off and then randomly sound will still come through. It is very embarrassing when my dog starts barking and my speakers are on and super loud barks start streaming out of my computer at my office. Then you have to click the sound on and off a few times for it to turn off again.I usually feel that you get what you pay for but this instance does not follow that rule. I paid WAY too much money for this product assuming I was getting a good quality item. Instead, I got a really expensive hunk of junk. I bought another camera for half the money that has the same feature set as this camera as well as better quality sound and video, is able to pan, tilt and zoom, two way sound, has a slot for a MicroSD card for recording, was a much easier setup, and so far has functioned flawlessly. My advice.. buy ANYTHING else. 1Decent Wi-Fi Camera with Some Flaws ** Update **I tried to use and like this camera however there are too many flaws, too many issues. I'm returning it. The camera does a decent job at motion detection (when it works, which is maybe 40% of the time). However, there are many false positives and missing of events. The max recording is 10 seconds, which is not enough time to capture something happening. Also, there is a bug when filming outdoors, the video goes completely white. The fix was to disable the "Frequency" option, but even when disabled, the white-out still occurred (including a video). Too much fighting with this camera with not enough functioning is causing me to return it.I was looking for a network camera that used wifi 802.11AC, supported mjpg and rtsp streaming, 720P resolution, infrared night vision, FTP upload support, remote viewing, and cost less than $100. I also wanted the option not to push my footage into the cloud. I came across the DLink DCS-935L.Network configuration was easy; I hit the WPS button on my router, then held the WPS button on the back of the camera. It got on the network quickly, and I was able to connect to the camera webpage for configuration. The camera configuration web interface is decent, however there are a few flaws. As others have mentioned, the web interface uses Java and ActiveX, which are security risks. Also, the camera has an internal certificate which expired on September 3, 2015. This means the plugins will not load in your browser without changes. I called DLink Support about this and spoke with Briegan (AR004214) who walked me through disabling browser security. This allowed the plugins to load properly. I can see how this process would turn many users off.Once I was able to load the plugins, I could configure the camera. I enabled Motion Detection, and set up an FTP server. I'm still tweaking the motion detection sensitivity...I'm at 85% right now. When the camera detects motion, it uploads an MP4 video clip to the FTP.There are some cool features regarding ftp upload, image manipulation, automatically rebooting the camera, and backing up configuration. I'm glad these options exist because I wanted to avoid the cloud configuration. The DCS-935L gives you the option to use the cloud, or keep it local.Once the camera was setup, I was impressed with its performance. The Java and ActiveX plugins are a security risk and should be changed. Also the expired internal certificate makes configuration difficult. However, the video quality, features, and cost make this camera a good buy.FYI, here are URL's to access the camera's feed (change "camera_ip" with the IP address of your camera):Realtime Image Snapshot: http://camera_ip/cgi/jpg/image.cgiRealtime Video Stream: http://camera_ip/video/mjpg.cgiH.264 RTSP Streaming (Port 554): rtsp://:@camera_ip:554/play1.sdpMJPEG RTSP Streaming (Port 554): rtsp://:@camera_ip:554/play2.sdp 2Pain in the A__ to setup. Save your money. There are many other cameras with better videos quality and night vision. It is one of the most difficult camera's to setup. If you don't set it up with the app forget it. It uses a WiFi connection for setup. I have been complete unable to hook to the Wifi 5 ghz side of the network. Every time I have attempted to use 5 ghz it quits and I have to reboot through the WiFi connection. Night vision is the worse! Can't see in the dark at all.I was on with support for over an hour to attmept to set it up. The concluded that is was defective when I realized that the defect was the power supply. I had to use the dlink power supply instead of a standard mini usb connection to power it up.DON'T SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT. PERIOD. 1Worth it, go for it. Reviewing: DCS-935L (Amazon, fix your review system, you slam reviews for different models together)I had some old cameras and I did look at many cameras including the over priced security camera's. Based on my budget, these were a great option. I didn't care for PTZ camera's, so these are fine.Subtracted one star because the set up didn't work (scan cards or WPS). Not that big of a deal to get around, it should just work.Got what I expected based on reading reviews. There are multiple options for viewing the camera, direct with browser, some free (and paid for) apps on Apples app store and several others (ie: spyconnect.com) on the web as well as some D-Link apps on app store.Pro's:Zero light in the basement, can see very well easily 15 feet to the door. Could do further, I'd say 20 feet would be around max.Crisp view and colors when well lit. For medium light, it seems to revert to a semi-gray scale... whatever, not a big deal.Easy setup (when you don't use the scan card), takes a few minutes but worksCon's:Hard to recognize faces in the dark, kind of expected but wanted to list it just in case.Scan card set up is garbage, neat idea, poor execution, didn't work for either of my two camera's multiple timesAmazon doesn't price match these. Got them for 89 and two days later bestbuy has them for 69 (might do the refund process, not sure)Doesn't do video recording based on motion, but makes sense. Lot's of free software on the web for that.Steps to set them up without scan card.Plug in, turn on where you have decent WiFi receptionConnect to it's WiFi (as listed on bottom of camera). After SID, password and it connects, it should open a browser to it automatically.WPS did not work multiple times, so I said "no" to WPS and did my home WiFi SID and password manually.Select your house WiFi. After you fill out the home WiFi stuff settings, here is what I think happens.1) The camera reboots2) Your phone is showing a waiting kind of icon because it lost connection to the camera WiFi3) After a certain amount of time, your phone doesn't see the camera WiFi SID anymore so it reverts back to your default (probably home) wifi4) It then connects to the home wifiBy the time this is done, the camera has probably rebooted and connected to your wifi. You can then go to your home router and figure out the IP address. You can open your browser directly to the camera to do any other settings and see the live feed.Screen shots below, taken through ispyconnect.com application. pretty sure any other way would yield same results.Camera 1: Absolute zero light in basement. Camera sitting on top of a speaker, over looking air hockey table, towards pool table and double doors.Camera 2: Sitting on fridge, wife paying bills LOL (Don't tell, she'll be pissed) 4I really wanted to like this camera I really wanted to like this camera. It is the right size and it is designed well. I found setup using the web gui to be easy. It had good picture quality and was compatible with VLC. To be short, this should be a five star review. However, the video feed on mine randomly gets stuck on white in bright environments. Per dlink customer forums, a number of people have this issue, and there seems to be no known fix. I troubleshooted everything reasonable and upgraded the firmware to latest version to no avail, so I am returning it. 1Not good for security The quality of the camera itself is good. The night shots are also good. It's unfortunate that the software in the camera is almost completely useless. The lack of an internal SD card means the only way this records is if you have an FTP server to store your video. A a live "I want to see what's going on" camera it's fine, but for security it's pretty useless. The website for the camera uses java and all of the technical issues surrounding java makes this impossible for any "normal" person to use. If you're not a geek like myself then don't even bother considering this camera. Most of the issues holding this thing back are software related, so D-link could fix all of the issues with a software update. The software looks pretty old so it looks like there may not be much of a chance of that. Like most companies, old stuff get's abandoned as they bring out new products. The mydlink portal is good but it doesn't address any of the cameras advanced functions. The setup was pretty simple too despite the instructions being a bit dated. I contacted support but have not heard back from anyone. From my home network the ability to e-mail snapshots is completely broken. I tried both my gmail and hotmail account using numerous ports and configurations none ever worked. If you're looking for a security camera I'd pass on this one altogether. I probably should send it back but now that I've gone to all of the trouble to configure it and mount it I might just try to figure out how to fix the software issues myself (which might mean I brick the camera and have to buy a new one anyway). 2Would be best bang for the buck but takes some technical prowess, has some fatal quirks (frequent false alarms) & poor support UPDATE #4: Appears to be toast. For a while it would work okay without those false alarms on the latest firmware, but it dropped off the network on a daily basis. Did a complete reset, and while it is active and the DLINK lite app can see it, it doesn't respond to controls, mail alerts or anything else.So in the end I have gone for a BLINK system. Yes, at first I thought "$100 per camera, that's crazy!" but then I realized it was actually much cheaper because you only need one sync module and the cameras are discounted if you need more. So it has ended up being cheaper than the dLINK solution. PLUS free cloud storage of alerts. And the things run off rechargeable batteries than you only need to charge less than once per year.Brilliant.UPDATE#3: Okay, finally got a response to the trouble ticket opened more than a month ago. They recommended that I change the video settings from the usual 60z to "none" as the refresh rate. I did so and so far three days later, none of the those false alarm flashes! I hope that this means it is resolved. I'm revising the start rating in that belief. (I'll update here if things change.) Note that this is NOT a viable fix if you have the same trouble with their NON-HD D-LINK cameras, since those don't see to have the option to change the video refresh rate. But so far this is working for me, so I am revising the star rating to 4 stars. Not perfect, for the reasons outlined in my original review, but workable.Full Details from the web page where support directed me:Q: How do I fix the White Screen of my DCS-935L when the camera is pointing outside my Window. [note that i had this problem regardless of a window being present and my issue was more often that a FLASH would occur based on nothing in the environment, and trigger a motion event; less often, the image would turn and stay completely white which sort of had the opposite problem -- no triggers and nothing recorded]A: If you have your camera pointing outside form a window or if you have a room with large amounts of light (direct sun light) you may have noticed the Live view window will display a white image or maybe a silhouette of some items in front of the screen, This is caused by the frequency setting allowing too much light. Please follow the steps below to change the settings of a camera displaying this symptoms:STEP 1. Log in to the camera configuraiton pagesSTEP 2. Go to SETUP from the top horizontal menu and select IMAGE SETUP from the vertical menu options.STEP 3. Look for the Frequency Setting and select OFF.STEP 4. Go to MAINTENANCE, select SYSTEM and click on the REBOOT THE DEVICE buttonSTEP 5. Wait for the camera to reboot (About 1 Min) and check the LIVE VIDEO tab to make sure the changes have taken effect. You should now see a cleared picutre of your camera.NEW UPDATE #2: Still no assistance from D-LINK, more than a month later. They have posted twice here but have not responded to the four trouble tickets I have opened (three using the link they provide and one directly on their web site). I will be sure to update the review if they assist me. For now, the TL;DR summary is: The motion detection is not functioning. This is an issue that has caused numerous support threads on their web site. Support is unresponsive. If you don't need motion detection, this might work fine for you.UPDATE #1: Amazon was nice and was willing to do an exchange. Alas all that confirmed was that this problem was not unique to one unit. The new one has the same issue.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'm a fan of these DLINK cameras. This is the third I have bought -- though this is the first of the HD ones I have.Yes, they are quirky, but since I went through the learning curve with the first two, it wasn't too bad. Here is what I learned on the older, SD models:1. Setting it up fully to make it useful for you requires accessing it via the IP address of the camera. It runs a little web server which is the interface to all(?) the settings. You need to be comfortable with configuring email clients if you want the camera to send you email. You need to be comfortable setting up an FTP client, if you want the camera to FTP photos and videos. Etc. And note that the web interface requires that you enable Java. Literally the ONLY reason I have Java (a security nightmare) on my computer is for these cameras. You can uninstall it once you have them configured the way you want -- but give it a week or two to make sure you got it right (see item #2).2. It takes a while to dial in the specifics of things like motion detection. You may need to adjust the coverage area and or the sensitivity several times until you get it right. And there will still be some false alarms on occasion.3. Unique to this model (since the earlier models didn't support AC wifi): Don't use the fastest wifi setting. Connect to a non AC source. Yes, the speed will be slower -- but the range and reliability will be higher. You don't need AC speeds. You need reliability over a long range.Once you get over those hurdles, you are PROBABLY good to go. Why do I say PROBABLY? There is still strange stuff going on, including one deal breaker:1. On the older models, when you have them send you an email with still images when a motion event happens, you would get ONE email with five images. Ideal. On this new model, sadly, you get FIVE separate emails. Wasteful and harder to manage. But not a deal breaker.2. The "deal breaker": on both of the units I have received from Amazon, several times each day, the video will FLASH white, like a camera flash went off. This will trigger it as if a motion event, and you'll get a notification, captured video and or stills, emails, alerts, i.e., whatever you have set up based on a motion trigger. This is annoying and makes it nearly useless from a motion trigger/security standpoint. In other words, four stars off for that since false alarms make the motion sensing and security features pretty useless. These false motion alarms are a known problem with various dlink camera models going back to 2013 that is still not fixed in some cases, as I have learned. You can read about it on their support forums, such as: [...] and on other topics.Changing the sensitivity down to 1% (or 99%) does not solve the problem. It happens whether in day or night mode. It happens whether both video and stills are being captured, or just one or the other. I didn't experience it until getting this particular model, and it has happened on both units of this model that I have acquired. Factory re-sets and firmware updates (and downgrades) don't help. My other older SD D-LINK cameras are operating okay and I am using the same setup for all of them -- but of course the hardware is different and the firmware is different.Until this issue is resolved, I can only recommend this camera if you do NOT want to use the motion sensing feature. If all you need is a way to dial up the view from the camera from another location manually, I think you will be fine. But I use cameras for security purposes too and this is a deal breaker. 2Like others have said, stay away from this one! Like other reviewers have said, stay away from this one. I bought my first d-link camera, the dcs-932, a week ago, and I was so impressed I wanted a couple more. I then ordered one of the pan and scan ones, and it works ok, although it loses connection sometime. Then I wanted to try one of the hd ones, and this one was at a warehouse deal, so I got it. I got it, plugged it in, hit the wps button on my router and on the camera, and it worked great. The picture was super clear and very wide angle. And then, the next day, it just lost connection and it hasn't worked since. Even right next to the router, it won't connect with wifi anymore, and the "connect" button stays lit up solid green. Not sure what that button is even for, but it just won't work anymore. I hate to say it, but all three of them that I have seem a little iffy, but at least the other two will reconnect. This one won't. What a disappointment. 1Adjustable focus ... if you remove the case I wanted a camera with very close focus. I wanted to have the camera close enough to something the size of an index card and fill the screen on the camera and be in focus. I opened the case on my DCS-935L. Removed the "night vision" filter. The lens has a focus ring on it. I rotated the focus ring about 360 counter clock wise degrees That bought the index card. (located about 4 inches away). into focus. 4
