    As good as any basic sediment filter. Had the HF-360 installed in the house for 12 years and it started leaking out the top. There are about 4 o-rings that eventually rot out and start leaking. I replaced the o-rings I could reach and it reduced the leaking, but didn't eliminate it. Fortunately, this HF-360A is the same size and footprint, which meant it was a straightforward swap I could do without a plumber. My original setup had a soldered threaded connection at the input and a sharkbite 3/4 threaded connection at the output. The Sharkbite worked great and did not leak over the 12 years. I replaced it with a new Sharkbite anyway. Installed the sharkbite into the filter head and used thread tape and wrapped at least 5 times for a leak free connection. Then, I took out the old unit and spun the new head only onto the teflon taped, soldered threaded input pipe. Pushed the shark bite on and slowly turned on the water. No more leaks! 4Yes you most Definitely need a filter, but this is NOT it! Don't mess with plastic! Regardless of where you live you need a sediment filter. It will save your appliances along with giving you better water to drink and shower in etc. I bought and installed 3 of these. This PLASTIC housing is just that, all plastic. None of the pipe threads or main internal components are metal. The only metal items are some small screws and a plate the on/off handle sits on. Therefore, as a filter housing it does its' job to hold a good quality filter inside. The problem is that it is all plastic. After less than 2 years the clear part of the filter housing cracked open and flooded my kitchen like a garden hose on full blast. Luckily I was home and noticed within minutes and ran out to the street in PJs to shut the water off to the house. If I wasn't home, even for a hour it would have been an absolute disaster! If I was gone for a couple days, the whole house would have been flooded and I would have had to redo all of the floors, lower parts of the walls and all of the new cabinets and likely appliances along with other rooms in the house. I am SOOOOO lucky I was home! Then a few weeks ago the 2nd one started leaking (drips). I tried to replace the o-ring and grease and spent way too long having a plumber trying to figure out what was leaking. This time it was the blue top part of the housing cracked all of the way from the inner valve to the surface. The first unit had the clear plastic catastrophically fail, the second unit started cracking in the blue part of the plastic housing. I never will buy a plastic anything for connecting to an all metal water system. Big mistake that could have ruined my house. I got lucky twice with 2 of 3 of the filter housings failing when I was home. Both have been removed and are being replaced with solid stainless steel filter housing. More expensive but worth it. I also realized that the handful of small metal connectors and pipe fittings needed to install this almost are the same price as the filter housing itself, not counting paying a plumber to install, then remove and replace them after a couple of years. Would have been cheaper to install the stainless steel ones in the beginning.(Original 4 star review before the plastic wore out)Installed as a whole house filter on the incoming city water. Used the 5 micron filter it came with and now changed it after the recommended 2 months. Having this clear housing is so much better than any of the ones you can't see through. You can change your filter earlier or later depending how dirty it gets. I'll probably change it more frequently (see picture). Very happy that none of that dirt/silt/rust/etc isn't going through my washer, water heater, and shower. I installed a 2nd unit under my kitchen sink and put in .5 micron filter for the cold water so the water we drink or cook with is filtered 2 times. Definitely better taste. Switching the filter was easy and only took 5 minutes or so which included rinsing out the clear part with hydrogen peroxide. Very very convenient to have the ability to turn the water off in the unit so the filter can be changed without having to install extra shut-off valves like other filter housings. 1Loose threads, okay design (A) ez leaky. Leaked 3 times: first through threads - if doing pvc, you must use pvc-compatible pipe dope, NOT teflon tape (leaked). Second through pressure relief (red button), pvc shred from cutting got wedged between washer and housing. Had to unscrew the stainless screw to fix that. Third: 10 hours after installing, a drip on the threads again. I really think the threads are poorly cut because I tightened it flush with just my hand, no tools or pipe connected.(B) After that low quality experience, I looked at other brands. They are a similar price, identical size filters, and include the filter spanner.(C) pressure locks on the filter housing. Once you've closed the valves, you must relieve pressure before it will open. 4Works... watch for leaks - you can fix the leak This filter seems to work OK. Its fairly new yet.Install was simple enough.But when I turned the water on it had a slow leak around the handle at the top (not between the clear body and the blue top)... since I had it hard plumbed into my system I didn't want to take it off. I turned the water off and did some investigating and under the handle there are 4 screws. I took those out and there is an O-ring around the handle interior. I put a bunch of plumbing silicone grease on the o-ring, reassembled it, and the leak was FIXED.So be advised... If you get a leak coming under the handle you can fix it. Just be sure to turn the water off first!I downgraded the product to 3 stars since I had to fix it. Now it seems to work OK.*********************************UPDATE - 3may2013This filter housing is still going strong. I've probably changed the filter 4-6 times.I have had no issues with leaks. It seems the initial fix is holding fine.Maybe the problem was a twisted O-ring and when I removed it and greased it the reason it stopped leaking was that it wasn't rolled?Anyway, just wanted to update the review to let you know it is working.If it keeps up this good performance maybe I will upgrade it to 4 stars...BTW - I am using these filtersCulligan P5-D Level 4 5 Micron Sediment Filtration 2 Pack Replacement Cartridges 3Unless you love plumbing work, probably should pass Man what a pain. I've installed house filters before, but I tried two inline for smell and filtration. Got two of these. I have CPVC. Leaked with tape. Retaped. Leaked more. Retaped. Leaked still. Pipe doped. Leaked. More dope. Made mess but finally got them not to leak on the inlet and outlet ports.Installed the filters and pressure tested, leaked from the housing. It did finally stop but at filter change time I will dope the threads inside where the oring is.Also doesn't come with a filter wrench. 2Great quality, long lasting, dependable solution, easy to get filters for. Well, I finally had to replace my original Culligan unit with this one. Why, well nothing lasts forever, but 15 years of service and changing filters and hard water buildup from my well, it was time, mainly because of the clear plastic becoming so stained it was hard to see the filter, mind you, 15 years of full-time service. We live in the country and I use this as a pre-filter from my well to the house. Note: Install in line, after the pressure tank (on booster pump installs, you can be more flexible) not before, or simply not between the pressure tank and the wellhead. You can buy bulk filters on the internet for this size, and in any combination you want, I use this for sediment and then have a triple version under my sink for charcoal filtering and microfilter, which when tested in this manner, I was surprised that we beat a bottled water sample test comparison I sent in. 5Leaks I read the reviews about how this product leaks a lot. I know a thing or 2 about plumbing and figured that I could get it to stop leaking. I did ... after several hours of work. That was a couple of months ago. Today, I had to change the filter. I simultaneously changed the filter in my Watts WH-LD Premier Whole House Filter System. The Watts filter changed without a problem. The Culligan, however, is leaking again. If it doesn't stop by itself, I will replace it with a Watts, which is a vastly better product. Not even close. 2A leaker around the gasket. This is one of those items I was reluctant to purchase online, however most of the choices and best prices with this filter type are on line. After hours of on line searching and review reading, I rolled the dice and bought this one. When I got it I noticed right away the thin gasket in the can. It;s to small allowing you to only tighten it so far. "IT DRIPS / LEAKS!" POOR DESIGN FLAW. I spent a lot of time putting much silicone gasket lube and even another new gasket. STILL LEAKS. I bought this to replace a teledyne waterpik filter I had for years until the bypass valve failed and it only opened half way. What a hassle to replace again. Pisses me off. So many things these days are poor design, cheap material, and built to fail. Culligan will you pay me for my labor and extra package of gaskets I wasted time and money on ? 2Beware the poor assembly and propensity to leak I purchased this filter because of the bypass valve in the head. I wish I had read the reviews more thoroughly, because when I pressurized the system, water was spurting out of all joints! And this isn t my first plumbing project... not by a long shot.First off, I discovered that the big o-ring had been installed incorrectly by the assemblers and it was pinched, rendering it useless. Secondly, three layers of teflon tape on the pipe fittings was not enough to prevent them from dripping. So, after working the o-ring with a heat gun to remove the kinks, and using pipe dope over teflon tape over pipe dope on the pvc pipe-thread fittings, I finally got it to stop leaking. Or at least it appears to not leak at the moment. I ve been fooled before by this poorly constructed head. And I m only running a 30-50psi system!Like another reviewer mentioned, it appears that the female NPT fittings of the head are too deep and thus the shouldered pvc fittings can t go deep enough to match the taper, and thus they don t close and seal properly - an obvious design flaw. So, one has to fill the thread gaps with teflon and goop and then tighten down very hard - almost to the point of cracking the plastic fittings.Lessons learned: check that the o-ring has been pinched during assembly and use lots of pipe dope and teflon tape on the pipe threads. If I have to rebuild the fittings again, I will use a 3 brass nipple sunk deep into the head (coated with copious amounts of dope), and then attach my pvc fittings from there.So, four stars for the concept and price; minus 2 stars for assembly, design, and construction. 2The material used in this product does not allow the ... The material used in this product does not allow the "O" ring to seal properly due to the surface irregularity in the upper case. The coarse texture requires an unusual amount of torque to be applied to the canister.Of course high temp plumbing grease (silicone) was used, but the tool will eventually fail, and this problem will persist. 1
