Customer Reviews

Great tools, but watch your sellers. Crescent are good tools and function well. They are made in Taiwan, so if your looking for America steel, your going to need another brand, such as Armstrong, and your going to pay for it. I used Armstrong at home and Crescent at work. Both have guarantees and both are great brandsSmall note- the adjustable wrench is sketchy. I've always known Crescent to brand their wrenches, but this one just says made in china with no name. That being said I am picky about what lines of tools I get. I needed this older set to replace some lost screwdrivers, and was going to use the sockets in a backup bag for my temp workers. But I did not get the older set, I got the newer set. The newer set was $15 Dollars cheaper from another seller. So I paid 15 extra because the seller can't take the time to check their listing and verify which product sold, or remove a listing if it's out of stock. So, Cooper Hand Tools, ball is in your court. Let's see if you do anything about it. 3Tools and Case are poor quality The tools are substandard quality, to the point where they are innefective for even modest tasks. Using the 1/2 open-end wrench I stripped the hex nut cast into the small ball joint on the froth of a Cub Cadet lawn tractor. I can't judge this for sure, but it would seem that the corners rolled so easily under hand pressure that flex in the open-end of the wrench could have been a contributor. I then had a buddy grab the stripped side with the channel pliers from the set, so I could try to turn the other side 1/2" hex socket. Without using a cheater bar, by hand, I turned the nut and on the other side where my buddy what holding it, the teeth stripped right off the pliers. Keep in mind that they stripped on the same material that the edges rolled on from using an open end wrench. So, hand pressure, on a soft material, the teeth came right off. I uploaded a picture of this to the review. Hopefully a heat treatment set was skipped on the manufacture of this batch, rather than this level of being the designed hardness - I have way cheaper pliers that have held up on much harder circumstances.I was hoping the issues other reviewers have mentioned about the case would be manageable, however the poor fit of the case to the componenents turned out to be impossibly frustrating. Initially I wrapped the tools that chronically fell out when opening and closing the case with electrical tape to help them fit snugger. This worked briefly, but the individual slots started to just open up more. Trying to close the case without things falling out is not a fun game after the first couple dozen times you've played it.Lastly, the set turns out to not be that well thought of a package. Strikes me that they bloated up the numbers by piling on bits and sockets rather than trying to provide a complete set. Why would you have three drive sizes (1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" ) with full socket sets, yet only have the open end wrenches go up to 5/8"? How about at least throwing in one more size "Crescent" wrench?grumble grumble ... 2Great Travel Kit Giving this four stars for now. Haven't put everything to the test, so I'll edit accordingly.I did weeks of research into tool sets before deciding on this one. I wanted something specifically to go in the Durango for road trips. So far, I am very pleased with this kit. When it arrived, I was immediately impressed just by the weight. The case seems sturdy, and is a very convenient size that fits perfectly next to my subwoofer and cooler in the back of the Dodge. It has four plastic clasps that keep it closed; I have other kits with the same system and they've all held up, so we'll see how this one does after a few hundred uses. The handle seems very sturdy and I don't foresee any problems with it.The tools themselves seem sturdy enough as well(though made in China). I've only really used the needle nose and a couple screwdrivers so far, but am plenty happy with the quality. Speaking of the screwdrivers, they are magnetic, which I absolutely LOVE. Already saved a dropped wing nut from my atv air box with one. The needle nose have a nice cushioned handle that makes them quite comfortable to grip. Again, haven't really used anything else yet, but upon a precursory inspection they all look like good enough tools for light use.I did drop one star for being made in China and some of the items don't stay very securely in their designated slots. One set of allen wrenches continually comes out. Doesn't really bother me, as I'd rather have an occasional item pop out than need a pry bar to get them out. The kit comes with a piece of thin foam in the center which I highly recommend leaving in there. It eliminates rattle and keeps the whole unit tight. The only thing I would like to see added is maybe some electrical tools; dykes, strippers, tester, etc. But for the price, this looks to be a great kit for the mechanically inclined to keep in their vehicles. 4Just buy these If you are looking for a set of tools for your car, truck or around the house, you can't find a better buy than these. Not too many but just enough to do just about anything you need to do. Add a pair of vice grips and a hammer some duct tape, wire, WD-40 and you are really set. I have gone through several tool sets in my work trucks and this is by far the best choice.I like the organizer case they come in, so easy to tell if something is missing and put it back. That speeds up fix it jobs by not looking all over for the right tool. Open the case and instantly start working on your project instead of still looking for a tool to use.The quality is fine on these, not Snap-on quality (what is) but not bad at all. I would waste money on less then this set provides and then add on just a few special tools that you might need and for under 160 you have it all covered, if that won't fix your problem than you probably need professional help... but that's another story. 5LOVE THIS SET I'm not a professional, but I'll get there when it comes to mechanics. Learned from watching many tutorials, videos and reading a lot of ebooks for cars.As an Evo X owner (JDM) everything is basically in meters but I do have some USDM parts, in Inches. This set has both. It has 90% of all the tools you might need on your daily basic operations, be for a normal customization or maintenance, this will do the job.The tools are sturdy, high quality chrome and plastic rubber. The plier is showing some rust but that's it. The case material is also very hard plastic with quality, the tools sit firmly for some time and the handle is rubberized really good. Overall size is very compact and you can leave it behind a truck seat or on the trunk, it's very light (around 20lb).The quality is great and just bought this after a LONG research and finding a lot of similarities between this and big brands. Since Crescent also offers the lifetime warranty, GO FOR IT!! Cheap, all the tools you might need and lifetime?GO FOR IT !! 5Exceptional value and excellent customer service I bought this 170 piece Crescent set on a lightning deal for $79.49 with free 2 day Prime delivery. All tools, except 3, are stamped "Taiwan" and are very nice; smooth, finished and solid. The 8" adjustable wrench and 8" long nose spring-loaded pliers are stamped "China"; the 10" torque and groove pliers are not stamped but appear to be same quality as the 8" wrench and needle nose pliers. These latter 3 aren't as nicely finished as the other tools but are certainly adequate. The adjustable wrench stuck at its open midpoint on opening and closing, the latter motion requiring direct pressure on the moving part to get unstuck. I called the toll free company number and explained the adjustable wrench problem. The operator immediately offered a replacement which arrived quickly in a few days via UPS postage paid. The replacement is stamped "Crescent USA" and "the original since 1907"; it opens and closes smoothly. The case's slots, as others mentioned, are a little difficult to remove tools from and replace; a minor annoyance. The case seems reasonably constructed of adequate material. The slots for all tools, bits, bit keys and hex keys are all labeled. All in all, an excellent set for home handyman purposes. Highly recommended. 5I don't like pre-made kits since they are always missing something I bought this to use for a roadside emergency tool kit in one of my cars. As a rule, I don't like pre-made kits since they are always missing something, and this one is no exception, missing more than a couple of wrenches and sockets. I ended up buying some parts from Crescent directly to fill out the gaps where I could, but even they do not have all the missing tools. However the quality of construction on the wrenches and ratchets is surprisingly high (better than modern Craftsman). Some of the tools are less impressive, namely the screwdrivers. I would have given it 5 stars if I could have filled in all the missing tools. 4Tools will last; case will need repairs. Pros:This tool set are high quality, have a nice variety, includes several adapters, and is neatly laid out. The ratcheting mechanism feels good and the socket-lock holds onto the socket very well. The adjustable wrench, screw drivers, long nose and tongue and groove pliers are not simply an afterthought (they are well made).Cons:As mentioned by others, the blow mold carry-case is not the best quality. The door clips are weak and will most certainly wear out with age. The sockets are held in very well, but my case arrived with one of the plastic teeth that grips onto the socket already broken. There is actually a hole punched in the case by the manufacturer because because of the tight fit. I imagine when they were putting in the sockets they were too forceful and caused the puncture. I have fixed it with epoxy but I am not sure how long it will hold up.Summary:This is a great comprehensive set, good value, and must-have for any home tool set. I rated it a rounded up four and a half stars (****1/2) because of the poor case quality alone. One of the selling points for this 170-piece set is that it is convenient and should accommodate most jobs. Receiving a broken case only hints to the pains I will have as I repair the case over time in order to keep these great tools convenient.============================== 170 Piece Set Contents ==============================--------------- 1/2'' Drive ----- Ratchet Handle 5'' Extension Bar 6-pt Sockets:.. I use it probably at least once a week, and often times several times a day. This is the nicest portable set I have ever owned. Amazingly, I still have every piece that it came with (that's a first). I highly recommend it.Now for the negatives:1. I did drop the set a few times with it open, and the plastic "doors" can snap off. Luckily it has gone back on every time and hasn't permanely broken off.2. The plastic snaps that keep it shut will eventually wear out and fall off. This hasn't happened to me yet on this set, but I had a similar set that this one replaced that happened to after 2-3 years of use.3. Biggest annoyance is that the black bit holders on the right hand side do not stay snapped in that well. Not a big deal, but you'll have to put them back in every time you open it up after it's wore out. 5This is a nice complete Crescent set that is nice quality and will hold up to everyday shop use I worked at an auto restoration shop for 3 years and the boss brought this in for us to use as an organized backup to our big tool box we were using. We opened this up and put it on a nice roll around cart and I don't think this kit was ever folded back up and moved again, so I can't comment on how durable the case is. What I can comment on is the quality of the tools you get for the price. I was skeptical at first (never used crescent) but noticed right off the bat that the finish on all the chrome was excellent. The ratchets were well made and they were nice and tight. The screw drivers have what looks to be hardened tips and after years of use, they all still had great tips. All the wrenches are nice. I used these tools almost everyday and they all had their share of being dropped as high as our lift would go and everything held up great. This kit has almost everything we needed at that station (everything from a tune up to pulling full drivetrains). I liked it so much, I just purchased one for my home shop. Paid 99.95 aug of 13 and I thought is was a great deal for what you get. 5
