Customer Reviews

the bands provide nice tension and holds my little gadgets in place very ... Arrived promptly as usual, wished I had gotten a size bigger. This is about the size of a 10" tablet, I normally carry a XPS 15 so size is not an issue for me. This thing is a lifesaver, it significantly de-cluttered my backpack as I can now have all the cables, memory cards, charger all gathered in one location. It is made out of quality material, the bands provide nice tension and holds my little gadgets in place very well. I can see this become super handy during travel. Highly recommended! 5Great way to optimize bag space! Nice way to organize random small necessities in my backpack! This size fits perfectly in the front pocket of my Osprey Celeste backpack, and is great for when I need to switch to my messenger work bag! It's holding things like my iPhone charger, comb, nail clippers, headphones, travel sized Tylenol, eye drops. There's also a zippered pocket in the back for something small/flat/low-profile (I put a Macbook Pro HDMI attachment in there). It takes a bit of trial-and-error to figure out the best configuration to fit what you want. I love that I can just pull the whole unit out rather than have to dig around in my backpack for these small things. I also love that all my small items don't just sit at the bottom of my bag and cause the bag to bulge out. The Cocoon helps to manage and optimize bag space! The one thing I don't like about it is that the whole organizer does bend forward from the elastic tension holding your stuff. I wish it were a little more rigid to keep straight/flat... but it's overall very much still functional. 4I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I wanted to like this. I really wanted to. I was hoping this would be a nice solution to my problem of organizing chargers and other accessories to make switching between one messenger bag to another easier. Everyone on the internet seems to think these Cocoon Grid-Its are totally awesome, so I bought two different sizes. However, as much as I tried to like it, I just can't. First, I don't like having cables exposed, particularly because the rubber webbing isn't quite tight enough, and things constantly work their way loose from the friction/jarring of being carried around in your bag. The webbing works fine for something big that can go through multiple bands (like an phone charger cable), but for something small like a USB flash drive, it's just useless. It doesn't grip tight enough and it will fall out before you know it. At least if you put the drive in a small pouch-type of thing, you know where it is. Secondly, I feel like the Cocoon Grid-It takes up a lot of space relative to what you can fit on it. Once you realize that things need to be held in place by multiple bands in order to be secure, you discover that this thing holds less than you think it will. The pouch on the back of the Grid-It is a nice touch, but it makes the grid-it protrude awkwardly in the back, and if you put something that is bulky in there (like a charger) it can actually pull on the sides of the Grid-It and make the whole cardboard backing bow a little. While I'm sure this would work fine for some people (hence two stars instead of one), I find it to be more hassle than it is worth. 2Seemed like a good idea at the time If you use it to organize all those little electronic things you need when you travel ( in my case, charging cables, power adapters, presentation pointer, etc) make sure you get a larger one. The small ones are just too little to be practical. Still searching for the ideal solution to organize all those little electronic knickknacks for travel, but in the meantime this simple item serves the purpose.Update: After trying it for a while, it's really kind of useless. It's a pain to find the right size places to fit the things you want it to hold, and if you put in in your computer laptop or bag, everything falls out anyway, 2March 7, 2014 - My Review of the Cocoon Grid-It Organizer (CPG8RD) The Cocoon Grid-It Organizer works well organizing my Apple devices accessories. I wanted a good and effective way to neatly store items in my Thule carrier and I found it in the Grid-It Organizer. Now all my cables, plugs, ear phone, notes, pens, etc., are neatly held in place. The Cocoons design is made-up of various lengths of elastic. These elastics crisscross each other to form various pocket sizes. My Thule Bag holds my iPad Air, Macbook Pro 13 , and the Cocoon Grid-It Organizer (CPG7RD and CPG8RD); items are neatly organized in its proper place. The Cocoons designed appealed so much to me, that in addition to this Cocoon GRID-IT Organizer Red (CPG8RD) Dimensions: 0.4 x 7.5 x 10.5 inches ; 8.5 ounces I purchased the 3 other sizes:Cocoon GRID-IT Organizer Red (CPG5RD) Dimensions 0.4 x 10.2 x 5.1 inches ; 6.4 ouncesCocoon GRID-IT Organizer Red (CPG7RD) Dimensions: 0.4 x 7.2 x 9.2 inches ; 7.4 ouncesCocoon GRID-IT Organizer Red (CPG10RD) Dimensions: 0.4 x 12 x 8 inchesIn conclusion, the Cocoon Grid-It does what it is designed for and I give it a five star because it does what it is supposed to do. 5Saved My Sanity! This product has saved my sanity. I carry a small messenger bag instead of a purse, and I am forever digging in it to find what I need. This organizer fits perfectly in the messenger bag, and holds everything I need so that I don't have to dig and dig and dig. It has saved me so much time. When I need something, I know exactly where it is. I know this is technically for computer supplies (tablet or laptop bag), but it also works very, very well in a personal bag. I am able to keep my cell phone there, asthma inhaler, hand wipes, portable cell charger and cord, bottle of aspirin, wallet, lip balm, and much more. There is a nice zippered pocket on the back that I use for cash. Every time someone sees me pull this out of my bag, they want to know where I got it so they can get one for their purse. Most purse / bag organizers are huge, this one is flat so it doesn't take up much space at all, makes all your important things immediately accessible, and stops the stress of, "Do I have my phone? Do I have my wallet?" which used to consume me! I plan on getting the larger ones for traveling - having all the important travel items in one would make traveling a breeze. 5Not what I intended it for but I think I like it I really thought this would hold more. I'd intended to use it to organize an admittedly unreasonable writing utensil collection in my work bag. It's worthless for that. However, I also carry a fair amount of cables (usb to usb c, usb c to usb c, lightning cable, usb to micro usb, plus when traveling a smartwatch cable and an aux cable), wired earbuds, and a power cube. All of these things tuck very neatly into the straps, plus my giant flat power bank (aukey pb-y14) fits perrrrfectly in the flat back pocket. It's pretty great to be able to pull this grid out and have everything laid out neatly and easy to find, honestly. It doesn't hold the volume I'd hoped, it doesn't serve the purpose I'd hoped, but it DOES serve a purpose, and does it well. 4Nice device but bowed early on. This size is perfect for me traveling (med) and it does have a pocket on the back. I use that to keep wipes for the airplane for the table. Mine has bowed a decent amount which is more annoying than anything and doesn t affect it s utility at all. It keeps things nice and organized (though I can t fit nearly as much as they do in the picture), but does take up more room in my carryon than just having cords sitting at the bottom of the bag. It s a trade off for space v organization. 4The best. These things are as great as everyone says they are. I bought one of the knock off ones, and everything seemed to always be too tight or too lose. I store all my cables in here. 5Excellent organizer, ideal for someone who switches between multiple bags/briefcases/purses! [UPDATE 8-22-2016: Just a brief update to say that, after a few weeks, I stopped using this organizer. Although I stand by what I said in my original review about its convenience, I decided I don't like the added bulk/stiffness when carrying this organizer in my briefcase or messenger bag. Also, perhaps because I'm a detail-oriented person (evidently, a little obsessive-compulsive in this case), I found myself wasting time perpetually re-organizing and/or re-tidying my gear. At first, it's addictive like Tetris as you try to find the optimal layout to save room and hold all your items neatly. That much I expected. However, even after I settled on a layout that I liked, I found it just takes time to find the right loop and tuck everything in again neatly, especially with loose/sprawling items like headphones. Ultimately, I decided it was more convenient and less bulky to just use small ziplock bags to wrangle my headphones into some kind of tidy order, and then stuff them in one of the pockets of my briefcase/messenger bag. It's faster to stow/retrieve items that way, and feels like less of a hassle than using the Cocoon Grid-It. Your experience may vary, but that's my two cents based on my personality and actual usage.]The Cocoon Grid-It 10.5 x 7.5-Inch organizer is a great way to efficiently organize gear in a briefcase or messenger bag (or purse, I suppose--but as a guy, I don't have one of those). The elastic straps are considerably higher quality than I was expecting: not only stiff and ruggedly stretchy, but also lined with rubber grip bumps that help to hold equipment surprisingly securely. The grip bumps work particularly well on smooth plastic shelled equipment, such as pens, chapstick, a portable computer mouse, and other such items that would normally slip out from under a normal elastic strap. In that regard, I am very pleased.WHAT IT'S GREAT FOR: This item is ideal for someone like me who switches between a fine leather briefcase for the office and a messenger bag on weekends for carrying items like diapers, wipes, a Kindle, headphones, etc. (I am a dad of three young girls all under age 6). By placing my everyday items in this organizer, I not only can keep them securely organized in each case, but I can easily swap them back and forth between my briefcase and messenger bag without having to move the items one by one (nor "reorganize" them) each time. I just lift this insert out of my briefcase and pop it into my messenger bag, or vice versa. In short, if you're swapping between bags often, this is a phenomenal, uber-convenient solution. It also excels at holding small items secure and stable in your bag, especially if you have a structureless (floppy) style bag like a canvas satchel or messenger bag. Whereas those bags are prone to letting small items spill out when you set them down carelessly, this insert keeps them tightly in place and even lends a rectangular structure to "fill out" the bag (assuming you pick a size that matches your bag's dimensions relatively closely) so that the bag is less floppy as well. That's the purpose of this organizer, so it's good to know it works very well at its job.THE SHORTCOMINGS: I'm satisfied with this product, but a few shortcomings bear mentioning. First, it is slightly heavier than expected. In one regard, that's good because it means a more durable construction. However, if you're aiming for the lightest load possible, know that this organizer will add approximately 4 ounces to your load (i.e., a quarter of a pound). While that's not too bad, it may be important to some people. I've decided the convenience is worth the weight, but if I were considering this for ultralight backpacking, for instance, I would probably pass.Second, although the elastic straps are fairly varied in length and placement, it takes a fair bit of thought to plan out how to use the organizer most efficiently. As I began filling it with gear, I found myself having to rearrange it many times to get everything to fit in a convenient arrangement. I also found (predictably) that it is most stable when you secure the heaviest items (e.g., a full tin of Altoids mints, a portable computer mouse) along the bottom of the organizer and stow lighter items (e.g., chapstick, earbuds) higher up. That makes it less prone to flop over, as well as less likely to "teeter" back and forth inside a fairly spacious, stiff-structured bag like my leather briefcase. Once you find a configuration that works for your gear, it will be time well spent, as everything rides nicely and stays put thereafter.OTHER DETAILSUnbeknownst to me, this particular divider--possibly all of the models--has a zippered case on the backside. It's quite thin, so it won't work for stowing items much thicker than a USB/flash drive, and may be difficult to access if small items slip to the bottom; however, it would be a good place to stow some spare cash for emergencies or something like that. The small zipper also looks to be of dubious quality. It works fine, but it gives the impression that it would break easily if stressed or if not handled with care. I probably won't use this zippered area for anything except spare cash, as I mentioned, since I wouldn't care to access it very often.CONCLUSIONThis is a great way to organize a briefcase, messenger bag, or purse--especially loose/floppy style bags that don't excel at holding items securely anyway--as long as you don't mind the added quarter-pound of weight. It is ideal for someone swapping numerous items between different bags on a regular basis. In the latter instance, I would even go so far as to say this is a must-have item, as it really does add enormous convenience in that regard. If that sounds like it fits your needs, then I recommend it without reservation. As for long-term durability, only time will tell, but having seen it in person, I do trust that it is rugged enough to yield years of reliable service. 4
