    It is a proper 16mm bit - but not a very good one So yes, as the previous reviewer noted, the description of this bit is deceptive. People who created this listing (or any other that pertain to metric bits, screws, nuts etc) should NOT have added a fractional "equivalent" into the title because, aside from few very special cases, they won't be "close enough".I attached some photos showing the packaging, and then this bit and a Freud 5/8" bit for comparison, with calipers readout.As for the bit itself, it's not good.I am not sure whether the exalted reviewers below got better samples than I have, but the one I received clogged up, bogged down, and overheated (to the point of discoloring the cutter on one side - but not the other - which means that it's likely off-center as well). This happened at the recommend RPM while babying the bit through the piece. The Freud bit, by comparison, just barreled through the same piece of Douglas fir, at much faster RPM and didn't even get hot to the touch.I suspect the CMT bit simply lacks the precision grind that's a must for forstner bits. Lastly, even though CMT is an Italian company, the packaging leaves no clues as to where it was manufactured.For $20 this Fisch bit: Fisch FSA-134558 Wave Cutter Forstner Bit, 16mm x 8mm is a lot better. It is made in Austria, the grind is very high quality and performance is *almost* as good as Freud's Precision Shear bits.I decided to rate the CMT as 3-star, because for $8 it will get the job done - and with enough precision for those who need a 16mm hole, but if you make those a lot, get the Fisch one instead. 3Read the description closely ... this is not a 41/64 bit! Yes, this is mostly on me, I should have read the product description more closely. I searched for a 41/64" bit, selected this one because it was a forstner and had good reviews, and bought it (along with one other, see below).Of course, when it arrived, the package very clearly said 16mm. And 16mm is most definitely NOT the same as 41/64" ... in fact, 41/64" isn't even the closest standard US size to 16mm! (5/8" is) ... converting both to decimal inches, 16mm is 0.011" smaller than 41/64". That may not sound like much, but if I didn't care about the hole size I would've used a 5/8" bit from the local hardware store!This isn't the first time I've been burned by misleading product descriptions on Amazon, and you'd think I would learn. Maybe someday ...(4 stars is just a placeholder because I have no need for the bit but I want to be fair. I had the same description issue with another CMT bit that I bought at the same time, but I'm planning to use it because in that case 15mm is only 0.003" less than 19/32, so I think it will work. I'll adjust this rating based on the quality of that bit, if required.) 4BEWARE: Deceptive Picture, Poor Quality The 24mm version does NOT have teeth like the picture shows, is not very sharp, and therefore had trouble drilling into a pine 2x4, pretty sad!After drilling just 2 holes in a 2x4, 2" deep, in my drill press @ 1700rpm, using very little pressure, letting the bit do the work (what work it can do), clearing the shavings 5-6x per inch, and waiting 15min between each hole, this thing discolored from heat. It's pine, not hardwood, jeez. STEER CLEAR!The Irwin bit I got from Lowes cuts 10x better, no exaggeration. Unfortunately Irwin doesn't make 15/16 or 24mm, so I exchanged this for an MLCS.However, this is the perfect size for 3/4" conduit (making cheap lumber storage rack). 1Misaligned Bit I've had problems cutting straight holes with this bit ever since I received it. Each hole is started properly, but as the bit cuts into the wood the hole angles away from center. I, again, made sure my drill press was aligned, square and level, but the holes are consistently angled. After trying my other large diameter forstner bits with no problems whatsoever, I finally concluded that this bit is defective. I then, finally, observed the defect by turning and seeing a slight wobble in the shaft near the cutter. I guess this is the price you pay for buying a cheap bit. Never again... 1Bit is sloppy, marred, dull and hard to believe it is a cmt product at all This bit has to be either used and reground or counterfeit.I bought this for a project I'm working on. I went to drill out the door (1.25" pine) and the bit wouldn't bite. I had to put a lot of pressure onto it and it would still not bore. It got too hot so I had to let it rest. I checked the bit and the machining is sloppy, marred, dull and hard to believe it is a cmt product at all. I haven't been this disappointed in a purchase for a long time. My entire months long project is on hold waiting for a 24mm forstner bit...Beware! Do not buy!Update: I emailed everyone I could about this item, even CMT directly to ask if this item was legit or not. Never heard back from anyone at Amazon or CMT. At this point I assume it is counterfeit or used and repackaged. 1Not so great Tried it in oak and pine. It did make an acceptable hole, but was very slow and took a lot of pressure, causing the bit to heat up rapidly. I thought about sending it back, but figured it wasn't worth the bother. The design is difficult to sharpen, and the Chinese had ground it rather roughly. By using an augur bit file and a ceramic rod from my Triangle Sharpener, I got it cutting a little better, but still not very good. I have an old Irwin bit of similar size made in Austria. It is the exact same design and cuts just as poorly. The saw tooth edge is not the product I received; it has a smooth edge. The bit clogs rapidly and has to be removed from the hole often to clear it.Tried a Freud Diablo bit and it cut faster and left an even smoother hole. It also appears to be a lot easier to resharpen. I have an old router bit made in Italy from CMT that worked very well. I have to wonder what is going on at CMT. 2Sometimes you need a metric bit to get a job done right... I bought this mainly to drill some arcade button holes in a raspberry pi project I was making that required 30mm holes. Bit works great at making perfect holes in some thin plywood but I also made some step notches into a piece of wood just to test out the bit and it works fine.I haven't used this on anything other than wood but see no reason it wouldn't work on hard plastic as long as you are mindful of the heat buildup. Overall a fine bit to add to my toolset as being in the US we don't have many projects that require metric bits.I included a photo of the table I was drilling to show the holes afterwards....my buttons fit snug and true using this bit. 5Good for a few months. I've used this on 9 occasions to drill a total of 54 holes in laminated ply. I know this because I custom build arcade controller boards. After 54 holes I am back here looking for a new one. For the price, I paid $0.25 per hole, which seems pretty high. I could keep using the bit, but the points are dull and it requires more effort and time than it should, and this is with a corded 2500rpm DeWalt. I am going to look for different brand and am willing to pay more at this point. 3Image Is Not Accurate I purchased this based on the product photo. I already had a drill bit of this style purchased from some of my work working companies I deal with. But they did not work well in hardwoods. I needed the typical Forstner bit with many teeth. This bit (as I have shown in photos) is not as they picture it. After just a few cuts into oak, sappelle, and hickory, the shaft, and the bit were burnt. The other thing with this bit is that the shaft is rounded and not squared off, so there is a possibility of slipping in the chuck if not really tightened down. I'll continue to use this until it's dull and discard it. Not worth returning for the price paid. It was half what similar bits were purchased for at those work working stores I mentioned. I would not suggest this for anyone working with hard woods. 2This bit just may bite you! Be Careful!! So, be careful when using this project if you have a big job. It can get you into trouble. I had to drill about 500 holes for some railing and wasn't sure what size to get. I bought two sizes thinking I would reorder the right size to finish the job because it would probably go dull.Here's where the problems began. This darn thing lasted so long, I ended up getting about 400 of the holes drilled before it started to show it was getting dull! This had the adverse affect of giving me WAY too much time to drink beer in the garage and I missed dinner with the wife.So, just be aware that you may get lost in time because the quality of this was outstanding and I totally didn't see the problem coming!! 5
