Customer Reviews

this is a great backup. The dial mechanism is much more precise ... With my various bike hubs, etc. seeming to take the exact size cone wrench that I don't have (or only have one of), this is a great backup. The dial mechanism is much more precise and solid than on a typical adjustable wrench. Little chance of stripping something if you're careful. 5The slim part of the jaws are not long enough ... The slim part of the jaws are not long enough. Or to put it another way deep enough to reach. I needed the really slender jaws to reach a lock nut on a set of castors so I could tighten the nut on the other side of the leg mounting. It was a very slender lock nut, and the diameter of the structures around it prevented me from getting the jaws of this wrench sufficiently onto the nut. The quality of the wrench seemed ok. But the skinny jaws are too short to be effective in tight spaces, which is exactly where you need the really skinny jaws. 2Poor build quality This is my second copy of a Channellock 804S adjustable wrench. As with the first copy, the movable jaw's thickness is smaller than that for the fixed jaw - in practice this means that the jaws when closed are not flush (as they should be by design). As with my first 804S wrench, this one, too, has uneven general machining of the jaw components. Also for the current copy (the one I'm providing a review and rating for here): (1) the adjustment knurl stubbornly jams at several places when opening the jaws - it takes a lot of pressure to turn the knurl when that happens and (2) The knurl itself is quite sharp to the touch at both ends - the ends should have been filed at the factory to be smooth. I will be on the hunt for a better solution for this type of "slim jaw" adjustable wrench. 1Good for the money but not a great tool. Main usage case: backing wrench for large compression and VCR fittings in tight locations. I am sure I ll also use it as a more general purpose wrench as my other adjustable seem to have grown legs.Pros:1. Slim jaw means I can use it on nuts that are between other surfaces that may be inaccessible to larger wrenches (read: everywhere on semiconductor tools).2. Stubby for tight spaces. This is a thin jaw tool, so I won t be putting too much torque on it anyway.3. Comfortable grip with high visibility.Cons:1. As mentioned in many other reviews, the jaws don t line up properly, they re about 200um off. Sorry, this bothers me immensely. This is an issue with the way the tool is made and likely not just a defect. Expect a lot of wrenches to come off the line like this.2. The screw feels okay but not nearly as nice as 30+ year old Craftsman that I have at home. There is a bit of stop but it s miles better than a Husky or other bargain brand that goes as far as seizing up at times.3. There s a bit more play in the jaw than I d like. Not a big deal for the really big work pieces, but can be dangerous if you aren t paying attention on smaller stuff. Related to above issue with screw.Like I said in the headline, it s good for the money and will get the job done if you re in the market for this sort of wrench, but it s not an heirloom tool. 4Great tool First the differences between Channel Lock's flagship, the 440 tongue and grove pliers. These are made in Spain, and not the USA. The metal is much shinier than the tongue and groove pliers I've bought in the past two years. I've not had the opportunity to abuse them, so I can't speak for the quality of the metal. I don't have any reason to doubt these will outlive me unless I do something really stupid though. The blue rubbery material is completely different from the insulative sleeves on their tongue and grove and linesman pliers. Its thicker. It feels nice. However I am not one of those tool guys thats very picky about their insulated handles. On to the particulars of this model. The numbers are easy to read. The jaw opens slightly larger than the biggest tick mark. On the inch side the numbers go right to left. in the format 1/2 1 1/2 0. The leftmost 1/2 is actually 1-1/2". Minor nitpicking, but not a big deal to read. You can only use this as an outside caliper. Since the slim jaws are 3/16", wider than the teeth of most bolts, this is really handy for measuring the outside diameter of bolts coarse thread bolts when your calipers fit between the threads. This is not as thin as most thin wrenches though. I own a set of SAE thin wrenches that only have 1/8" increments. They are 1/8" thick. This is thin enough for my purposes though. The knurled adjustment screw has 1/2 more of a thread than most standard adjustable wrenches. It has 4 threads at each point in the screw. It does turn very well, but I don't know if that's due to the factory lubrication and the fact that its brand new.The lubrication was a surprise. It seems to be around the viscosity of 3 in 1 machine oil. I was expecting grease or dry lube. I am actually going to question Channellock about this. There is a set screw with a slot to disassemble this like 99% of the standard adjustable wrenches on the market. I have not attempted a teardown of this. Depending on what Channellock tells me I will likely disassemble, clean and relube with PB Blaster teflon lube.If you have an immediate need for either this or a set of thin wrenches, get this. The slightly thicker jaws will take more abuse. I've yet to find thin wrenches cheap enough where a set of SAE and a set of metric will be cheaper than this one wrench. If you want to make an extension bar out of some scrap metal pipe, you need about 1-1/2" interior diameter on the pipe. 4All Size cone wrench for bikes I have seen questions about the use of this as a cone wrench for bike wrenching. I have used this on multiple bicycles and it works well as a cone wrench. The wrench does have some play to it and is not a precision manufactured tool, however, it will do the trick for a wide array of sizes. I did not want to buy and store a full set of cone wrenches that I will use once or twice per year, so I went with this to save space and money. While it could be built better, it did what I needed quite well. 4Not the quality I used to know Was disappointed in build quality. Jaws did not align. Like the thin profile, but if jaws are mismatched the profile is slightly thicker than it should be. Especially, if you are using the tip for finesse work. Expected better from Channellock. Should have been ground finished as an assembly so jaws would align perfect. 2So far so good Open up a little more than 1 1/2"Open and close flawlesslySlim jaw is perfect for jam nuts and tight spacesIncluded in the pictures are a side by side next to my 12" Proto wrench, you'll notice that these guys open wider than the 12" Proto's, IMPRESSIVE!I've only had them a week so I have limited field time with them but thus far I'm impressed and happy with my purchase. Will update in a few months to see how well they hold up. 5Perfect When No Other Wrench Fits Anyone who does any kind of plumbing or automotive work, BUY THIS! It's unique combination of large jaw capacity and short length have made these my new favorite tools. Compression and hydraulic fittings are generally pretty big and unusual sizes, and stacked close together. There never seems to be enough space around the fitting to effectively use a 10" adjustable wrench, and the fittings aren't wide enough to fit two adjustable wrenches on either side. This little wrench has the large jaw capacity of a big adjustable wrench, but is short enough to work in tight spaces. The skinny jaws make it possible to grip compression nuts and bulkhead jam nuts that can otherwise be impossible. You won't need to resort to using pliers so often when your normal wrenches just wont fit.It is a good quality tool, made in Spain (not China). Definitely unusual, but the Spanish have a history of making very high-quality steel blades. The rubbery grip is thick and ergonomic, fits nicely in my hand and gives better control than a slippery uncomfortable metal handle. 5Needs work! Could be great! Awesome design idea. This tool could basically be a crescent wrench for all sizes. The problem is that it repeatedly slipped where it was about two or 3 m larger than where I had originally set it. This eventually stripped out the boat I was screwing in. It s made of sturdy materials because it was strong enough to strip the bolt. It s the gear mechanism that slipS. With a little work, this could be one of the main tools that every single person has in their toolbox because it s that close to being back good. I hope they get it worked out because I would love to own one that worked properly. Maybe have it made in the USA, if you re having it made elsewhere? We are known for making great tools! I really want to see this be one of them! Wherever you have it made! 1
