    A good deal for anyone who uses a telescope. I'm using this on a Celestron 102mm F5 telescope. While heavier than a standard eyepiece, it eliminates having to change out eyepieces with the chance of dropping one. (I have a old 40mm with a chipped lens from just this). On the Celestron it gives 21x to 63x. Eye relief is ample for eye glass wears at the 24mm end, but shortens down to where you won't be able to see the entire field of view (with glasses) at 8mm. I haven't had much chance to use this yet under the stars, but on things that I could view, the view appeared just about as sharp as with a regular eyepiece.The one major difference you will notice when you receive this is that it is larger and heavier than ordinary plossls. The rubber eyeguard can be reversed so that you don't need to turn it down if viewing with glasses. You may have to rebalance your telescope due to the somewhat greater weight compared to ordinary three and four element single power eyepieces. Stated weight is 4.8 ounces. It also comes in a real nice case with a screw top as well as a rubber top cover and a plastic slip on cover for the bottom.The image appears sharp over the field of view (an F5 telescope is a bit more demanding of eyepieces than say an F10 refractor). So this is a good eyepiece considering that it zooms from 24mm to 8mm. Apparent field of view is 40 degrees at 24mm and 60 degrees at 8mm. Refocusing is necessary in going from long to short or vice versa, but it isn't too much trouble. Much easier than swapping out eyepieces in the dark anyway... 5I've been in the market for a spotting scope when it was suggested to me that my refractor might work pretty well in that capaci I bought this to use with a small Televue Pronto 70mm refractor with a 480mm focal length. I've been in the market for a spotting scope when it was suggested to me that my refractor might work pretty well in that capacity. I realized that this eyepiece in my scope gave me a zoom range mimicking the 20-60x zoom range in most spotters. I fitted it to a 45 degree correct angle diagonal and took it outside. It works remarkably well and the quality of the image approaches the alpha glass scopes out there. It's not a Swarovski ATX-65 but it very close.Problems with this eyepiece for me (I don't wear glasses) is the overly soft rubber eyecup and the pretty fussy placement of your eye to prevent kidney beaning/blackout. That's a problem with many cheaper eyepieces but I'm spoiled by my Televue and Pentax eyepieces that cost significantly more money. All in all, however, I think this eyepiece performs better than its price might indicate. I don't know how it would perform for astro duties but I bought it, specifically, for daytime terrestrial use. 44 eyepieces for the price of one. I love this eyepiece. One thing not noted, or shown in the pictures is that there are markings on the side to show the strength. I am providing my own photos to show this. I noticed some of the other zoom lenses had it, but couldn't find info on this one, but I took the chance anyway. So yes, there are markings on the side for 8mm, 12mm, 18mm, and 24mm. 5Clairity not as good as a single lens Clairity not as good as a single lens. The ability to use one and switch magnification, amazing. For the money its fantastic. Its also the lens i have used since i bought it. 3 years and still my go to lens. I gave it 4 of 5 just because its not as clear, but i would have given a 4.5 if i could for convenience. I would buy it again! I bought on a budget and i think it was the right choice. Mated with an astromaster 90. I have a 2x barlow and a kit from celestron with different lenses 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 14mm, 20mm with filters. Had a 25mm laying around, maybe came with the scope. This lens is all you need to get out to saturn with a cheap scope. If you want to see the moon get a moon filter...its really bright. If you use this with a 2x barlow you can get in really close, just remember the adjustements get touchier the higher the mag, and saturn will be huge but run away really quick. If you are new and on a budget; get this lens, a moon filter and maybe a 2x barlow from celestron. Amazing customer service from Celestron btw. Broke a support, out of warranty. They sent a new one for free! 4Not bad for a Zoom eyepiece Views are good with an 8" SCT, an 80mm refractor and a 14" Dobsonian. There is a slight vignetting as you rotate the eyepiece, but that is expected in these style of ZOOM optics.The rings of Saturn and the moon showed very good views in the 8"SCT and the 80mm. In the 14" I was able to separate double stars in Cassiopeia and get a good view of the Ring Nebula. Attaching a phone adapter was a bit of a pain due to the size of the barrel, and that you need to twist the barrel to change magnifications. Very minor point to bring up for those using cell phones to take pictures.For the price, this is a worthy consideration for a new telescope looking for something more than the included eyepieces. 5Large aperture, nice bright images, but hard to clean Overall this is a nice affordable zoom lens. The aperture is nice and big offering great light collection. Used with my Celestron astromaster 130EQ, it doesn't maintain focus across the entire zoom range, requiring about a quarter turn of focus adjustment from 8 mm to 24 mm. And yes mine does rattle too. There are four lenses total, and the spacers and mechanisms aren't well-matched. But none of this really impacts the quality of the images. I unscrewed it all and tightened it which helped some, but not much. I use some basic eyeglass lens cleaning wipes which unfortunately introduced more lint than it removed. The Eclipse cleaning solution works well combined with a lint-free pad. The focal points across the range typically focus precisely on at least one of the lens surfaces. Which means that any tiniest piece of lint or speck can foul an image, especially bright ones. So be prepared for that, and if the internal lenses are clean and you're trying to fix a slight rattle by opening it up, my advice is don't! This aside, the lenses themselves are good quality, and I'm pleased with the bright sharp images and large field of view I can get with this zoom lens for the price. 4Great choice for the money I have several fixed focal length eyepieces and some of them were actually quite a bit more expensive than this one but my variable celestron has become my new favorite eyepiece. It is just so convenient to be able to dial in or out on the fly when stargazing. The pluses just outweight any slight loss of clarity in this eyepiece so I use it all the time now. I have a nexstar 8 and this is a great match. Use it for everything from close in objects like the moon or bird watching to planet viewing, etc. If you can accept a slightly less sharp image, this is a great choice and the convenience of a simple twist to zoom in or out can not be overstated. It is literally a game changer. I like it so much, I am tempted to invest in a higher dollar version just to see what they can do. For the money, this is a no brainer... just buy one and you can thank me later! 5Great eyepiece replacement! Very happy with it + 6SE Great replacement for the eyepiece - affordable, lot of bang for the buck. I'm using this with a Celestron Nexstar 6SEIf you're reading this review and trying to decide on this eyepiece then, you're probably, like me, a bit of a newbie in learning about this, so here's what my experience was like with this. The telescope tube (optical tube assembly, or OTA) collects light from the sky and creates an image that you can explore with the eyepiece. The magnification of what you're seeing in the sky is easy to calculate by taking OTA length / eyepiece length.My 6SE (1500mm focal length) came with a standard 25mm eyepiece, so 1500/25mm = 60x magnification. This zoom eyepiece starts at 24mm, which is nearly identical magnification (62x) and zooms to 8mm, or 187x (3x greater magnification). But you're just doing an optical enlargement of a section of the image that was created by the OTA, so the image you'll then observe *is* larger, but it will also appear a lot darker, you'll start to quickly realize that you don't have suitable optics to easily focus and get a nice crisp image, and I find I start to notice the slight vibration that I introduce to the telescope when my head touches the eyepiece.I sometimes use this zoom eyepiece with the similarly priced Celestron Barlow extender and I like that combination and am able to explore more, but it's just thinking through what this can and can't do. I've included two pictures simply taken with my phone peeping through the eyepiece looking at Jupiter at 24mm (zoomed out) and 8mm (zoomed in) to give a sense of the magnification. This doesn't give any sense of the image quality or crispness. 5Don't confuse the nature of optics for the quality of the equipment. This zooming eyepiece does a great job, but you need to be aware that somethings do not appear as well as others when zoomed in. This is an inescapable fact of life. Additionally, as with any zooming optical piece, the more you zoom in the smaller the field of view becomes. This means that the object can become too big to see all of it in the eyepiece when zoomed in depending on how big it appears to start with. The moon, for instance, will go from filling the whole eyepiece to just 1/6 of it filling the whole eyepiece. This is, again, just the nature of optics and is no fault of the manufacturer. But for viewing much farther away objects this zooming eyepiece is excellent at making them appear larger, which can greatly increase the detail visibility.Note: there are many objects for which the optimal view is a finite point in the range of zooming. For those objects, it's best to find that sweet spot and not try to zoom in too much. Also, it's best to turn the barrel, the zooming, slowly to find that right spot. The main reason for having a zooming eyepiece is to avoid having a dozen different sized eyepieces, any eyepiece within the range of this eyepiece becomes redundant. Thus, it's fine to have a 4mm eyepiece as this one only goes down to 8mm, or to have a 32mm since this one only goes up to 24mm.The base of this eyepiece has a threaded adapter which allows filter inserts to be mounted to the eyepiece. And, it comes with its own nice protective container. The container has a threaded lid that screws on, and the lid has an extension that fits the bottom of the eyepiece -- the eyepiece fits in the container upside down. The bottom and the top of the eyepiece also come with rubber dust caps.All in all, this eyepiece is very much worth buying for its convenience, function, and the fact that with it one does not need a handful of specifically sized eyepieces. 5A value upgrade to any 1.25" eyepiece telescope (+1), however... Unboxing this and wow, it's actually a large and weighty piece with huge eye relief. I'll try it tonight with the full moon and report again, but at first glance, the zoom action and internal lens movement is overly tight, non-lubricated and I can hear the guides grinding metal to metal, so that will be the first thing I have to do is apply a little precision grease to the zoom lens guides. Couldn't this have been done during assembly?Three Stars.Update- Unscrewed the top eyepiece and lightly applied an aerospace-grade bearing grease (Mobilegrease-28) and only applied it to the zoom slide guides, then turned the zoom piece in and out about 50 times. A whole lot better! I use this primarily on my Celestron D70 400mm spotting scope for bird watching and I really like it! Crisp image, wide eyepiece and now a lot easier to zoom with one hand.Upgraded to four stars, not five since the zoom is still overly tight and the guides were unlubricated during assembly. 4
