Very Annoying Tool First and foremost, wear gloves so you won't tear your hands up on the sharp sheet metal like I did. A couple of problems. First, the wrench doesn't fit very tightly over the element - there is some wobble. Second, as soon as you apply pressure and try to turn the wrench, it jumps off the element. That's the part where you'll cut up your hands. This is caused in part by the loose fit and in part by the fact that the wrench should be a couple of inches longer to give your hands some clearance. The hole for the screwdriver is pretty small and you won't get much of a screwdriver through it.Here's how I finally did it: After fitting the wrench on the element, I had a friend push (toward the water heater) on the end of the wrench with a piece of 2x4. That kept it from slipping off. At the same time, I gave up on the screwdriver and put a large pipe wrench on the body of the wrench. I got the old element out - no thanks to Camco. 2Don't buy! Normally, the RV items you get from Camco are worthwhile. This is an exception. Almost impossible to use. It would have been excellent if it had steel welded to the back with a 1/2" drive hole. The hole in the side is worthless if your electrode has been in for a while. there is just no room to turn it and expect it to stay on the electrode. I even tried a pipe wrench to get my electrode to move using this. Do yourself a favor and go to Lowe's and get a 1 1/2" socket for a 1/2" drive. 2There is no way in the world you'll successfully use this to replace water heater elements When I purchased this product top rated reviews stated that buyers successfully used it for replacing water heater elements. When I look at reviews today situation is much closer to reality - that for 98% of cases you simply can't use this wrench + screwdriver to get element out.Sure, if your water heater element is new or screwed in lightly you may succeed. Or if you have 24 inch bar that will fix through holes and not bend - maybe that will work. But in 98% of cases you'll strip this wrench. It's simple physics (leverage) + the fact that this wrench made out of cheap metal. I've tried my best to use this wrench for hours and only managed to strip it a little bit (see attached pictures).Then I gave in and went shopping for 24 inch breaker bar + 1 1/2 socket. If I knew what trouble it is finding those two items in stores (Home Depot has sockets up to 1 inch... Autozone is place to go) I would've ordered them from Amazon in the first place and saved both money and time. And sure enough breaker bar + socket did the job in seconds.So, do yourself a favor and get right tools for the job. Sure, you'll need to pay more than $5 for breaker bar and socket - but again - there is no way you are getting water heater element with this wrench in 98% cases. Plus, you can eventually use breaker bar for servicing Anode Rod.If you have any questions - feel free to ask it in comments, I'll be glad to help and share my experiences with servicing water heater. 1Not Worth It Don't waste your time or money on this. The socket doesn't stay on the hex head and you have no leverage to loose the bolt. I ended up going to the local auto part store and purchasing a socket for about $9. Used with a breaker bar, and I had the heating element loosened in about 15 seconds. Not worth the time, effort, or frustration. Use the right tool for the right job. 1Don t take your chances It was too loose to remove the part. It drove my husband crazy and started stripping the element and the tool. We got another one, another brand, from Lowe s and it worked immediately.I also got the same brand universal replacement elements. The threads didn t match up so they wouldn t screw in.When I returned the tool and parts they charged me $7 to ship them back. Don t bother with this. It s not worth the trouble. 1Works fine if your coils aren't torqued too hard. Cheap, soft metal. Worked fine for the first coil which came out easily. Stripped out while attempting to loosen the second coil. Had to run to the hardware store to buy a 1 1/2" socket. 2Won't Work for RV Water Heaters I agree with most of the other comments. The tool is so short that you can't get a large enough diameter with a long enough screwdriver to make this work in RV applications with recessed elements, at least for Suburban. There's no room to turn the wrench without banging a water heater part or your knuckles because its not deep enough. The wrench is also a little bigger than the nut on the element so it moves around and easily falls off. I could not remove my old element to get a new one on. 1Not a happy camper The shaft itself (with the two holes through one end) was too short for my RV hot water heater and consequently the wrench did not stick out far enough from the heater compartment to put a rod through...like the shaft on a screw driver. This is important as you have to be able to supply sufficient force to the rod that goes through the wrench shaft to loosen the water heater electrical unit, and in my case the side wall of my RV was in the way. One inch longer on the wrench shaft would have done the trick. Also, the wrench "end" was a little oversize so it did not fit tight properly, that is until I hammered each side of the hexagon down ....just a little bit. Instead of this being a 15 minute job, it took about an hour to complete. 2Did not work Multiple things about this made it not work. The length needs to be a little longer, it barely clears the edge of the water heater housing when on the heating element, making any leverage very difficult. Then the stamped steel is not very true to size and fits too loose, so when you finally get a decent angle to put any leverage on it the thing will slip right off anyway. The element is not easy to break loose. Very frustrating. I ended up using a 1 1/2 inch socket with an extension and breaker bar.Simple job with the right tools, this is not one of them though. I usually read reviews before ordering items but this one came up suggested with the heating element purchase and I just added it to the cart. Bad idea... 1For my use, garbage I've used these stamped steel sets before to get out shower valves and what not so I thought this one would work to get my stuck RV hot water heater element out of the suburban brand hot water heater. It could maybe work, if it wasn't stuck. MAYBE. The overall length of this is about 5", which puts the hole where you put the screwdriver right at the very edge of clearance (or read: not enough clearance). This makes it very difficult to turn. Then you have to keep it tight, and flat, to the element nut, while turning with force and holding a screwdriver in place. Just all kinds of bad. Basically don't waste your money, find something else. I immediately exchanged this for the CAMCO brand socket ($5 more) that's supposed to do the same thing that this does but hooked into your drill, so we'll see how that works. 1
