Customer Reviews

Always having Connectivity Problems I took a chance on this drive even though it had less than stellar reviews and I do have to say it deserves the bad reviews. I have found it to be a very unreliable backup solution. The drive always disconnects, missing critical data backup. Recentally an new problem started with a drive connected to one of the USB ports it never connects. Sorry to say I would not buy another one of theses drives. The customer support is very slow and the people I worked with so far seem less than knowledgeable. Sorry buffalo but I do not think I will be buying any more of your products. :( 1Worst NAS I've used. I've used a lot of NAS units, both for work and for personal use. I must say that this has been, by far, my worst experience with one. I had to jump through way too many hoops just to be able to update the firmware. When I first plugged it in, the software wouldn't allow me to configure anything, just telling me it was in emergency mode(because the firmware needed updated). Instead of the included software being able to update the firmware, I had to find the software that did. It didn't work, to the point where I had to edit the .ini file of the software to allow it to work. After a few hours of working with it, I finally got it to work. Since then though, a week now, the device will lose connectivity randomly. This is specific to the Buffalo NAS as the other three NAS units I have never have an issue. I have to power cycle the NAS to get connectivity back.I thought I would give Buffalo a chance... but did they ever blow it. I am ready to purchase 8-9 high end NAS units for my work and after this debacle, they will not be Buffalo brand. 1Worked at first, then nothing. I read all the reviews, especially the negative ones. Still, thought I'd give it a try, given my network experience level. Product arrived on time in excellent condition. The instructions were easy to follow, hook-up was a snap. Software installed without a glitch. Was able to add folders, etc. Interestingly enough, the other workstations on my network "saw" the device immediately, without software., and could access it. The NAS showed up as a network item just like a PC. Unfortunately, the workstation the software was installed on could NOT access the created files and folders (fortunately, NO DATA had been transferred to the device). Additionally, the workstation the software was on showed the device as a "Media device", and NOT as a network device. Spent hours troubleshooting the device, using the factory website, internet forums, etc., and NOTHING solved the problem. Worked until after no o'clock in the morning & gave up. Figured a fresh start in the morning with fresh coffee would work out. Hahahahahaha! Now, the other PCs on the network showed the device as a "Media device" and couldn't access it; all it showed was some LAME media streaming crapola, just as the workstation with the software on it. Further internet research came up empty; plenty of people talking out their behinds, but no serious solutions. Spent more than enough time on this device, and have returned it. NOT WORTH WASTING MY TIME ON. Unless you have a magic wand or know the secret to these devices, I wouldn't take a chance on one. It was almost like Google, Facebook, and twitter locking out opinions that don't fit their narrative; it's like Mr. Bill has his OSs deny access to devices he doesn't like. 1Good, basic unit. My needs are simple...all I want is a place to safely store my media, backups, etc. where they can be accessible by everyone in the house. I wasn't looking for anything too fancy or loaded with features...just a low-cost NAS that offers RAID1 capabilities. I know these can do a little more than just serve as a storage appliance, but that's all I need from them. This is my third Linkstation 220 (first diskless one) and all have been working well since I got them.If I have one complaint, its that the setup can be challenging if you're using previously-used disks. I had a couple of 3TB Barracudas available so I bought this diskless unit to expand my network storage. There are some prep steps that you have to take with the drives (delete partitions) and you need to download a utility to perform a disk format / firmware update on the unit. Oh...and you have to manually modify the .ini file to get the utility to run properly. Thankfully, a bit of Googling led me to the solution. So my drives are spinning, my RAID is configured, and I now have enough storage to last another 6 months at least. 4Never worked, returned it. I have no intention of spending my day trying to get a simple product to work i returned it. i put it on the network and my up-to-date mac never found the device. First the software install had an issue because the software is 32bit and macs prefer 64 bit software. when it didn't find the device i looked on the website and it was useless. the instruction insert and the online pdf had no troubleshooting informationif you enjoy tinkering to get a product to do what it should do right out of the box this could be a fun hobby for you. But if you just want it to work the way it's supposed to, this isn't the product. Not at all sure how it would work with Windows 1Great system once it works. But configuration is not explained explained very well at all. The setup instructions are basically AWFUL. It took hours of research to discover what is missing from the install instructions. They want "unformatted" drives, that's pretty easy. I use Windows and an external Drive Caddy, run CMD prompt, then run DISKPART that loads a program to list drives. Then LIST DISK and you get a listing of drives. If you turn on the external Caddy power, and do LIST DISK again, it will be obvious which disk just got found. Then SELECT DISK n where n is the number shown next to the DISK you want to Clean. Then type CLEAN and all partitions removed from the drive and no drive letter is assigned, etc. Now put ALL 4 drives in the LS0441DE, Hook up to a network, then push the power button. I also tried holding the Function button while turning on the Power, waiting 3 seconds, un-press the function button while the white LEDs blink, then push the Function button again, both LEDS blink white for a while, and in my case, eventually I saw the RED LED lit, which means the system is NOT formatted, and is in EM (Engineering Mode). Now for the fun. Unpack the latest firmware and in the file where you find LSUPDATER I had to open the LSUPDATER.INI and change the last two entries from[Flags]VersionCheck = 1NoFormatting = 1to[Flags]VersionCheck =NoFormatting = 0Prior to this, the system did not behave at all. 5Unreliable NAS! Poor Customer Service! - LinkStation 220DE I used to think that this maker was good that's why after my first one broke after 3 years of use, I purchased another one. This new last lasted me 10 months! I replaced both my hard drives to completely isolate the problem, new HDs still did not fix the problem. (Will does not see NAS on my network). Called in for support. I worked with different individuals for 3 freaking weeks to no avail! Every time I would call in after they asked me to do certain things, another individual will ask me to do other things. I finally got fed up and asked them that this NAS is worth $100 and still under warranty, yet they were unwilling to replace it with a new one BUT would rather waste 3 weeks of my time troubleshooting with them! I asked them that my time wasted was well over the price of this NAS that was worth $100! They did not care about the warranty period and resorted to giving me a crappy excuse saying and I quote, "We, most of the time find that even the new hard drives being purchased end up defective therefore we need to troubleshoot further." I expounded the question and said, "what you are saying is, even though I've already purchased 2 brand new hard drives (I switched from my old Seagate to the new WD), that it is more likely my brand new hard drives are defective rather than your NAS that we have been troubleshooting for 3 weeks?" Sadly, the incompetent (Diehard loyal technician that will probably retire with this company) said to me, "Yes more likely your new hard drives are bad." (Both drives?) That's when I lost it and took this NAS and tossed it in the trash can! If they are too cheap to replace a warrantied item (Less than a year) and would rather waste peoples time troubleshooting, they have no clue what "Customer Satisfaction" truly means! They would rather waste and pay their technician their hourly wage in wasting peoples time than making a wiser business decision to replace an item that probably would have saved the company money. I have no problem having to work with customer service to troubleshoot. However, there has to be a limit on how far they should do this and have an understanding that peoples time are precious! NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS!!! 1Too many glitches and constant problems. I bought two of these units, one to serve files and one to be a backup. They were working ok (not great) with only occasional glitches. Then they came out with new firmware and both units are basically unusable now. They constantly crash, won't complete a backup, and one won't transfer large files at all because they hang up about half way through.I've gone round and round with Buffalo tech support, both on the phone and via email. They only want to blame my network or my other machines and devices (which all work perfectly), or my router (which also works perfectly). It's no coincidence that the only two failing devices on my network are these two Buffalo drives.I've already bought a replacement backup system from another company, and now I'm going to try to get these replaced under warranty and sell the replacements.UPDATE: Rather than continue to deal with Buffalo's increasingly frustrating and seemingly incompetent "customer service", I decided to pull the drives out of these units and use them in a diskless NAS unit, for use as additional storage and backup. The disks inside were Seagate Barracuda drives. If you've made the mistake of buying one of these units and let the return period lapse, you also might want to just cut your losses and scavenge it. 1Great overall home NAS with better than expected transfer speeds I purchased the 2 TB version and love it, instant setup quiet operation and its perfect with a RAID 1 already enabled. First start-up only took about 2 min and all it took from there was an install from the provided disk and few selections for its initial setup. It has a lot more options that I expected and is a heck of a value loaded with two drives.Hard drives installed: (2) TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 1TB 32MB Cache SATA 3Transfer Speeds (GB wired network tested with Lan Speed Test each packet size listed, 10 packets used)1 Mb Upload - Average 391 Mbps / Max 434 Mbps1 Mb Download - Average 434 Mbps / Max 464 Mbps10 Mb Upload - Average 364 Mbps / Max 407 Mbps10 Mb Download - Average 351 Mbps / Max 395 Mbps1 GB Upload - Average 233 Mbps / Max 327 Mbps1 GB Download - Average 350 Mbps / Max 355 Mbps9 GB Upload - Average 245 Mbps / Max 245 Mbps9 GB Download - Average 350 Mbps / Max 350 Mbps 5This is old technology, find something else. I needed a backup solution that would integrate with Active Directory (AD) for security and backup Windows Server 2012 R2 drives. This NAS requires SMBv1 to be turned on to make the AD integration work. The problem is that Microsoft has deprecated SMBv1, which means; don't use SMBv1 because Microsoft intends for it to be removed from Windows in a future release. Because of this requirement I decided to send it back and look for different device. As far as the configuration of the NAS goes (other than Active Directory) it was pretty easy to figure out if you already understand networking but if not, I would recommend something other than this device. It does include a copy of NovaStor Backup but that is also an ancient version. 1
