Customer Reviews

The best purchase of mine! Wow, the first time I put it on... booom! It was like, the thick blanket around my ears through the years had finally been lifted. Everything is so clear, I can really hear the singers inhaling, moving their lips and tongues, and the fingers caressing the strings.I listen to all kind of music, ranging from classical to rock, metal (think of Dimmu Borgir, Wintersun, Amorphis...) and everything in between. My quest was to find a detailed, revealing headphone, and I A/Bed several headphones in stores, using Fiio X3 2nd gen as I tried to find something efficient enough without the need of amplifier:* Sennheiser HD598: smooth, but boring for most rock with virtually no bass.* Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: overrated, the sound was too constricted and the bass was bloated. It gave me headache just after 5 minutes of listening.* Grado sr80e: Gosh! It was like somebody was using chainsaw right beside my ears. Couldn't stand 1 minute.* Grado sr325e: smoother than sr80e, OK but a bit too metallic to me.* V-Moda M100: OK, good thumps, a bit less detailed than HD598 and sr325e. Looks good too.* Sennheiser Momentum On Ear: the bass was very good, detailed, strong, fast, but the mids was a letdown, too distant and overwhelmed by the bass. I could not enjoy any classical piece with it.* Audeze Sine: perhaps the Fiio X3 2nd could not handle that, because this headphone sounded like a $30 to me.I also own Sony XBA-A3 - a hybrid IEM with one 16mm dynamic driver and two balanced armature ones, and Skullcandy Grind. To me, the DT 880 is clearer by a wide margin, to the point that I use it to see the differences more than to enjoy the music. You can find the frequency response graphs of DT 880 and equalize it to achieve a smoother experience (that is, increase the bass and decrease the treble around 8kHz for better thump and less sibilance) without losing detail.I use the DT 880 mostly for films and classical music, and when my head is strong enough, rock and metal. The details are sometimes excessive, so to listen to music to relax, I use the XBA-A3 for a stronger (but slower) bass and smooth treble. The Skullcandy Grind is only for audiobook on my phone, merely because of the convenience (easy to put on/off, has button on the phone) as the bass on this phone is too much for any kind of music (good for those who want Beats bass but lack the money). 5Are you kidding !!!!! This kind of sound for this kind of price ?! Are you kidding !!!!A lot has been said and written about these cans but the fact is that it may be the best offer there is for analytical, precise and neutral sound. What that exactly is, is indeed a long story, but let me say that you will hear things with these that you probably never heard before.First of all, my set-up is an Audeze Deckard Class A headphone amplifier (I believe it s 4W class A), which obviously is more than sufficient to drive the 600 ohm versi n that I have. I actually have two pairs of cans and yes, the amp drives them both at insanely high levels at the same time with a cable splitter !The comfort can probably not get a lot better. I use them for movies late in the evening, and after two hours or so, they re still very comfortable, soft, right pressure, not hot at all.The built quality is sincerely 4/5. You don t get a remarkable headphone for this price, but that said it is solid, nice metal work, all in all very very good at this price point. Yes. Metal. Wow.And the sound.... we all hear different, but what you should be able to hear is... detail. This baby will separate details, keep the mids and low end tight, and that s already incredible at this price. Most people seem to worry about if it sounds shrill or the bass is missing . I d say that you should check what recording material you re listening to. People tend to forget that there are so many poorly recorded albums out there and these cans with tell you exactly that. So detailed, so revealing.Initially I found the low end lacking in punch but after experimenting endlessly with different music material and EQ settings, well, the conclusion is that the low end is there, in fact, it s all there, just in a very controlled way. Difficult to explain, but let s say neutral for lack of a better word. Very studio-like. In fact, I own Yamaha HS8 studio monitors and sub, so I do appreciate neutral sound. So, who should buy these ? First of all, if you don t have an amp, stick to the 30 and 250 ohm versions. The 600 ohm NEEDS an amp, period, otherwise you ll not be able to have a decent sound level and the control over the cans that you need. These cans are for serious music lovers who don t mind being served the truth instead of soup. While you may be disappointed in discovering that certain music that you previously thought sounded all right suddenly sounds so-so, the real reward is discovering so many new things while listening. With good recording material, you will be amazed to hear the vocals, the instruments. Sound stage is so-so, but I think we have to be fair and not compare these cans with 5-10 times more expensive ones.My favorite music for these are jazz, classical, lounge, blues recordings and watching a movie with these with blow your mind ! I do listen to a fair share of electronic / house music which sounds great, but don t expect the kick you get out of that with a solid pair of speakers - but that s merely the nature of that kind of music. These are half-open headphones, so you will have to avoid noisy environments, plus it s possible to hear what s playing even if you re sitting a fair bit of distance away. On the plus side, which I like, you can hear what s going on in the world outside, e.g. if someone s talking to you.Fantastic cans for an unbelievable low price. 5The perfect home stereo headphones. Excellent home stereo headphones. When I first put them on I quickly took them off, since I thought I had forgotten to turn off the speakers. That is how good they sound. They sound just like your speakers. The sound is quite neutral with no emphasis on the highs or lows, perfect for most listening situations. The headphones are quite plush and quite comfortable if you wear them tightly on your head and not loose, although I did not find them as comfortable as Bose Quiet comfort. There is no problem with the cord coming loose since it is quite thick and well attached. I would not use these at the gym, since the cord is 10 feet long. Neither would I use these on an airplane since the carry case is about the size of small backpack with thick foam protection inside. In comparison the Bose quiet comfort case is about 1/5 the size. I found no decrease in the volume of these headphones compared with my normal earphones with use of my Sony Flac player. There is some noise penetration to the outside environment but not enough to distract other people in the same room unless they are within one foot of your ears, so you can certainly use them in the same room as someone looking at TV or reading a book. These headphones are well made with very little plastic and mostly metal. They look and feel like they will last a long time. I find the sound quality excellent and they are certainly worth the money. 5I'm a basshead and I say it's great! For the 250ohm version (I am using an amp/DAC with these, but have used with and without)I've been looking at getting into the audiophile scene for quite some time, but haven't ever found something that appeared decent and was within my price range. I didn't want to blow a lot of money if I wasn't going to be impressed, but I didn't want to get the cheapest "audiophile" headphones I could find.I broke my former headphones (Razer's Man O' War) along the headband which made them EXTREMELY uncomfortable to wear even after 10 minutes so I decided to buy some higher quality headphones this time as my budget has significantly increased over time.I spent a couple days searching around looking for the best headphones for me, and I eventually settled on these. To preface my use for headphones, I'm a gamer and though not an audiophile, I listen to music a LOT, and the type of music can range by the hour. Typically though my music tends to center around electronic and pop, and anything with a lot of bass (I'm a basshead with car rattling subwoofers).Overall: Very satisfied with these headphones. The bass is not as strong as what I'm used to, but it's not their design. Everything is very clear. Well built frame. Comfortable to wear for at least a couple hours straight, long sessions can lead to heavy pressure from the headband. Recommended.Bass: I was skeptical in buying these as I read reviews about muddy/unclear or missing bass. Which is totally false. Perhaps already having my expectations of the bass lowered, I received these and tried some bassy songs and I was not impressed but not disappointed. These aren't marketed as having "great bass" so it's unreasonable to say they disappoint. From my personal headphone research, open and semi-open backed headphones lose bass quick, and I'm more accustomed to hard, beating bass in closed headphones. If you're a basshead like myself, these probably aren't for you I'll admit outright. However, if the most extreme bass isn't important to you, these headphones DO create clear (I suppose more accurate) bass, which I've found to be just as enjoyable, as many other headphones have too strong of bass that blasts the rest of the audio into the realm of static.Mids: I don't really know what to say here, I'm a newb to big audio. But comparing to other headphones I've owned (I've never bought trashy or cheap headphones, but never amazing either) these are just crisp overall. Even at high volume where most headphones begin to blur with distortion, these remain crisp and each individual sound is effortlessly identifiable.Highs: Highs generally sound very tinny to me, but honestly with these headphones I cannot say that. Compared to the other audio devices I have around, these are SIGNIFICANTLY clearer at high frequencies.Outside world: Due to the semi-open back design these do let a lot of outside noise through. Previously I've used a lot of noise cancelling headphones and for me this is the only real downside to these headphones. But noise cancellation isn't at all what these are made for, but if you don't like to hear the outside world, these may not be for you.Build quality: I'm not a fan of the loose cable design on the headphones (there is a cable running through the headband to connect each side). I'm not a fan of the loose headband adjustment system chosen for these (it's not unreasonably loose, but I prefer a stiffer adjustment that locks into place with a decent force). I do like the overall construction of the headset however, they are very light compared to other headphones I've used and distribute the weight pretty well around my head. They do get heavy on the top of my head after ~3 hours of straight use, for most people this is probably alright, you'll know your own comfort level and general length of time for which you may use them, so decide as you will. As far as the ears go, the cushioning on my headphones was STIFF when they arrived, but after only a few days they have softened up to a level I like, but they haven't gone "mushy". The velour padding is very soft on the skin and (ignoring the top of head heaviness) is very comfortable to wear for hours on hours on hours. They keep my ears warm, but they don't get too warm at all, and unlike other headphones I've had, sweat is not an issue at all. I also have larger than normal ears and the large ear cups fit nicely around them. As for the structure of the headphones, they are very flexible but very sturdy, and despite dropping a large heavy steel pocket knife on it, the (presumably) aluminum portions seem to resist scratching fairly well and if you get something on it, you can easily wipe it off with a finger and restore it to it's natural beauty. As a lesser important side note, I do wish the connecting cable wasn't so long. I personally have my amp/DAC on my desk top a foot from my left hand, but using the included twist ties (that hold together the cable in package) I've found my own solution...Honestly just including a picture so nobody can claim "fake"... -_- 5Accurate I am a musician and producer/engineer. I got these mainly to use for editing and programming as well as a mixing reference. They are extremely comfortable as I often do hours of editing...headphones allow you to hear consistently without keeping your head in one position. These make bad edits very easy to hear as well. The clarity of these headphones makes bright distortion and over-limiting very obvious. Same goes for low frequencies....you can hear overloads and you can hear separation between low instruments like bass and drums for instance.A lot of negative reviews are from people that don't understand impedance matching and are used to bass-heavy cans.I hope mine don't BREAK though :) 5Excellent pair of semi-closed headphones for monitoring/studio work The Beyerdynamic DT880 impressed me right out of the gate with its professional, German-made build quality, and lightweight comfort. The first thing I noticed when removing them from the box were that they were much lighter and more flexible than I expected. I purchased the 250-ohm "Premium" model in black. I understand that there is a "Pro" model with a coiled cable and a snugger fit. I have relatively large ears, so I was a little concerned about the cups being too small. That proved not to be the case at all, and I think they might be the most comfortable pair of headphones I now own.I landed on purchasing the DT880 because I recently got a Line 6 HX Stomp guitar modeling system, and the variety of budget and reference headsets I had weren't a great fit for guitar frequencies. The two best options I had were the venerable Sony MDR-7506 (a great all-around set of headphones with flat response, but tends to sound "fizzy" with guitar) and a Sennheiser HD280PRO (better for guitar, but a bit heavy/awkward and still not ideal sound-wise). Several people recommended the DT880 to me because it is a semi-open design, which I had not used before. Closed headphones are great for sound isolation and booming low end, but they tend to lack depth and realism in how they sound. It's difficult to describe, but you can immediately tell a difference with a semi-open design. I found them much more comfortable to wear for long periods, and the sound had a "3D feel" to it almost as if I were in a room and could hear and feel soundwaves closer and further away from my ears. That being said, the DT880 really does not compromise on low end or overall sound quality. Particularly on guitar, where a booming low end is either irrelevant or undesirable, they accurately relayed modeled guitar tones to my ears, without sounding stressed or "fizzy". This set immediately becomes my go-to for all guitar-playing needs, and in a quiet environment, I think it would be a great set for sound production/mastering, though I'll definitely keep around the MDR-7506's as a closed-back alternative. 5If you love headphones, you owe it to yourself to hear these I've read tons of reviews on these. Some very pro DT-880, and some very very against. ( Highs too high, anemic bass..) Here's my take on these. First of all I own some pretty awesome STAX headphones, have owned several Hifiman planar phones, have auditioned and returned AKG models, B&O phones, Sennheisers ...currently own the T-1 1rst gen that I use on the "Bottlehead crack" speedball equipped amp. , So you see I've been around the block..I've also sold high end headphones in retail.. First, yes everyone hears differently, second, most higher end headphones totally will give you back what you put in. ( Put in a crap source or amp..you'll get exactly that back at ya!) If you have a high impedance set, use an iPhone or tablet..forget it. You really need a quality amp to make these phones shine, regardless of make or manufacture. ( Actually most headphone amps in a quality receiver or surround sound processor will be OK) I'm sure a lot of you know this. I'm here to say I was astounded at how close these get to the sound of a headphone that costs about 6-7 times or more than what these cost. As good as the T-1??? No way! Good enough sound to be very very impressive?? You bet! I used the Bottlehead amp, and I was blown away by how flat a response and how accurate these are. They, in many ways give you a window into what a "Flagship" headphone can do. Tight bass ( no..not a basshead phone.. but accurate! I was floored at the quality and quantity of bass.) Midrange?? Stellar! Especially on female vocalists.. High end?? No sibilance that I could detect, just incredibly detailed high end. ( Perfect for jazz or classical) These truly seem to stretch the distance between the lowest and highest notes so you can hear ALL the music. No "veil" here!.. For the price, I've convinced myself that these are a keeper, also..the German build of these cans is clearly meant to last as long as you wish. Yes..take care of the cord!! Not replacable ( unless you can solder!) but earpads and everything else is replacable. I would have had no qualms about returning these, but they really are a good as the more favorable reviews you can find. One of the reviews ( Rockwell) says that this model (600ohm) is the "best dynamic transducer he's heard" surpassing even the Sennheiser 800! Well...that may be a slight stretch, BUT.....we do all hear differently. If you are in the market for some incredibly revealing headphones, ( especially if you've tried many makes and models like I have, forget the trash reviews, and give these an audition. I don't think you'll be disappointed..I know I wasn't, and I'm keeping mine! 5Excellent Open Back Headphones for Music and Gaming This is my first set of 'audiophile' grade headphones, so I was not sure where my expectations should be to begin with, but I must say there are few headphones I have ever seen which come even close to these. I am using a Mayflower O2 DAC+amp to feed the headphones. I purchased these with the intention of gaming and listening to a wide variety of music. The build quality is superb. The cable feels thick and durable and the gold plated connector looks great. The ear cups are very sturdy and yet they do not feel like bricks on your head. All of the connection joints are strong and give me no reason to feel they may break, however if they do break it will not be difficult to repair them as they are removable with screws and Beyerdynamic offers replacement parts. The adjustment system seemed a little odd to me at first, but after using them for a couple of months I have never had any mechanical issues with them. They always stay where I adjust them to and the way they function allows the cups to pivot a small amount. The headband is very sturdy with a steel band wrapped with fake leather. While I wish it was real leather it's not a deal breaker, given that the padding is ultra comfortable and has never become uncomfortable even after long gaming sessions. The soft pads on the ear cups are also very comfortable and allow your ears to ventilate naturally.I really want to stress the comfort of this design. I have never worn a set of headphones capable of the same ergonomics as these. The ear cups are big enough that my ears do not feel squished or any kind of pressure. The clamping force of the band is a little on the weak side which means you cannot head bang with these, however this is likely what makes them so easy to wear for long periods of time. The other factor to consider is the softness of the ear pads, as they are just the right stiffness to maintain shape and yet they are soft enough to prevent any irritation. Excellent comfort overall. The audio quality is simply astounding, though I must admit I do not have a massive collection headphones to compare these to. I have tried these headphones with a few different amps and systems just to see what kind of differences I can hear. The headphones sound great on any system, but nothing has sounded more clear and precise as when I listen through the O2 DAC. In general I notice these attributes: The high range and mid range sound incredible. Particularly when listening to high quality music the vocalist comes through the mix perfectly clear, not muddy and with too much bass. I could try to describe the sound more accurately but overall it can be summed up as 'extremely clear and precise' which can be extremely useful for positional sound. This is part of why I like them for gaming, but with high quality music you will notice the difference as well. It feels like the musicians are in the room around you. There is one flaw I suppose that may bother some people. The bass is not very deep and boomy, which for me is perfect as I do not like overly bassy sound, but my roommate and others are on the complete other end of this spectrum where they enjoy as much bass as possible. Don't get me wrong, the bass is there, but it's not 'movie theater' bass that rumbles your chest. For me this is perfect, but for others it may be unacceptable. Something else you should consider is that these are open back headphones, so there will be sound bleed into the room as well as sound bleed from whatever else is in the room. This hasn't been an issue for me, but if you live in a noisy area you may want to consider a more isolated system.I give the product 5 stars because I can't find anything I don't like about it. I am confident that these headphones will last me many years. 5My Favorite Beyers! Let me start off by saying I m a huge beyer fan. I ve owned every version of the DT880 (250,600 and now 32 ohm). In addition I have a DT770/80, Amiron Home, DT1990 and A20 amp. The DT880/32 is probably my favorite. Their presentation is almost electrostatic in the highs - super light, airy and not harsh at all. The bass is very deep but on the accurate side rather than being boosted, which I also prefer. Then the mids. Oh the mids. They re dry, but beautiful. I ve never heard a headphone that I ve personally enjoyed as much as this one. This particular one. The 32. It sounds nearly identical to the 250 and 600... but I can run it off my iPhone. That s a huge plus. The sound improves slightly with the amp - but man it s negligible and if I didn t have it to compare directly, I wouldn t miss it.I love headphones that I don t have to use a bunch of equipment to make them sound good - and these fit that bill. Boy, do they ever. Just buy them already. 5Bright, balanced sound that brings smiles...how I expected the DT 990 to sound! After owning the DT 990 Pro 250 for a year, I decided to get these to compare and obviously keep. While I read that the DT 880 are light on bass, according to my ears, they're only light on impact. The bass is there, ALL OF IT, but it's not felt...doesn't fill the ears like the DT 990 Pro. So by result, the bass is more detailed and nuanced. The trade-off is worth it. The DT 880 600 ohm are what my ears expected of the DT 990, which has too much treble for my liking. My Schiit Asgard 2 rounds off that treble nicely, though. The DT 880 are BRIGHT on their own. If you have heard them and consider them too piercing, the DT 990 are DT 880s on steroids. The bass is big and also the highs...while the midrange is thinner. That is what I like about the DT 880...that they are as revealing as the DT 990 but without sounding so thin in the middle. They're flatter, while the DT 990 sounds V-shaped.Lots of people say the DT 880 are the boring ones and the DT 990 are the fun ones. While I get what they mean by that, I don't consider the DT 880 boring at all. They're flatter sounding, but they do not sound...flat. They're way livelier and more intense than a lot of headphones. If you want to experience truly boring headphones, try the super flat and revealing Senal SMH-1200. Those make any music sound boring and lifeless with their empty, dry sound signature...but are awesome as audio loupes.Anyway, I agree with beyerdynamic's descriptions: the DT 880 are for reference monitoring and the DT 990 are for critical listening and mastering. It makes sense, and their sound signatures are the proof. Thanks for reading. God bless you! 5
