Very useful tool to have around when needed. I had a need for this AGPtek SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for Hard Drive Disk when the booting HD of my computer started to die. Just before total death I was able to copy most of my user created data off it. After it completely died I saw this adapter and ordered it. The SATA to USB adapter did help the computer (which now had a new booting HD in it) see the old HD but insisted it needed to be formatted. I selected full format instead of the quick one because I wanted whatever bad sectors to be isolated and so not used. Because USB 2.0 is very slow it took 24 hours in an attempt to format but failed at the end. I used the SATA cable from this SATA to USB adapter to connect the bad HD to the motherboard of a scrapped out computer that had Windows 10. This time it was successful and much faster. Then I used the entire SATA to USB adapter to connect the reformatted HD to another booting HD I had damaged and copied all the files I could from the older booting HD to the reformatted HD. 365 GB of info. The adapter worked like a charm and I recovered everything I had almost lost. So it is good to remember the limits of this adapter but it can work great on simple copy and paste jobs. I was also happy with the low cost of this adapter. 4It Worked for Me It worked reliably. One thing I liked was that it had a 2A power supply, good for older drives that need more power. I did see a couple of external (visual) quality issues related to the build , which worried me, but it worked reliably with various SATA and PATA (IDE/EIDE) drives I tried with it. I read the negative reviews and was worried. But my experience with this product has been positive. I m glad I have it. (Note: the data USB cable is short. Not a problem when I had it right beside my laptop. It could be an issue if using with desktop CPU.). PS. I paid for this product and received no incentive for this review. 5I bought this because my old laptop decided that it ... I bought this because my old laptop decided that it didn't want to deal with it's charging port anymore and was therefore a brick when the battery died. I hadn't backed up my data in I don't know how long and I needed a current copy of everything on my hard drive. This product allowed me to plug in my old hard drive (easily removable from laptop by accessing its own panel and two screws on the bottom of my machine) directly to my new computer USB port and move all my files over as if the hard drive were any other storage device. This doesn't come with instructions so you'll just have to see what plugs fit where. The setup looks ridiculous and wrong, but just keep plugging in options until it works. The build quality is subpar and there are hot glue strings and gobs of glue attached to all the wire connections, but this is (hopefully) a one-time use product and was under $12.00 and it allowed me to save my files without shelling out hundreds for a professional. I'll call this a win. 4A Great Tool For Sifting Through Old Hard Drives A great tool for connecting hard drives of many connection formats and access data on those old drives you have laying around. I used the included power adapter and it immediately fried my hard drive. There was a pop and a puff of smoke, and the hard drive would not spin up even with a real power supply. It works fine with SATA drives, and I can't say anything about 2.5 inch IDE drives. Also it does not support PATA drives. 1Easy plug-and-play on Windows 7 Works great. Easy plug-and-play on Windows 7. Allowed me to spin up an 11 yr old IDE drive to copy files. Not sure how durable the IDE connector is, or how robust the circuitry might be, but this was a purchase made specifically for a single rescue mission. If I happen to need it again in the future, then great. 5Saved my life actually Used this on old WD external hard drive when it wouldn't power on itself. This works great and easy to use. I used this to turn it on and get it working again to take my important stuff off and use a new hard drive. 5Nice idea... didn't work at all. Didn't work. I tried this on several different PATA drives and not one single one was recognizable on Linux or OSX. I was unable to use this to inspect these old drives for data before I finally destroyed them.The drives would spin up and you could hear them initialising the heads, but not one single drive was readable over the USB Bus on my computers. Disappointing. 1Need to access an old hard drive? Try this. I used this kit to test a few old IDE drives I wanted to get rid of. It's nice to be able to pull off old files and also format old drives before getting rid of them. While using this kit I discovered that two of the drives I wanted to pull from were defective. For a bit there I was wondering if my kit was defective, but further testing proved that the kit was fine and the drives were bad. I noted some reviews where complaints were made about a sloppy glue job. I inspected my cable and found that what is being complained about is some hot melt glue that is being used to secure and provide strain relief for the wires in the large 4 pin power connector. Having that done is actually a pretty good idea so I wouldn't be too quick to criticize it. After testing several drives I was happy with the results. This little kit worked out fine and for the money, I really don't think you can beat it. 4
