Customer Reviews

Cheap cable with high claims Good thing I didn't expect much from this cable for my use. First impression after I got it is that it's too light, too cheap and too fragile. Yes, the cable sleeve can be torn off by thumb nails quite easily.I was curious why it's so light and has little weight as I have handled typical CAT5/5e often, this cable feel like its not even real. I looked inside the cable and it has tiny "straight" wires (non-twisted pairs!).Of course, there were enough 8 wires but each of them is so flimsy I think it may break if you yank too hard. Fortunately, I used the conductors for LED lighting extensions. So I could careless for signaling quality in my case. I cut it up and do some quick soldering to extend my RGB LED strips around cabinets and kitchen under lights. Voila, good use for long extensions with low price for materials.Seriously, I doubt its signaling quality. Just holding it, you can feel that it's not right.3/5 stars for 8 wires present inside the cable and it works for my purpose. 3Purchased two I should start by saying that I purchased one at first to see how well it would work out. After using it for a week, I decided it would fit my needs perfectly, and ordered another. Both came within 5 business days (ordered on Monday, received on Friday). Both cords were the correct length, even slightly over which is nice. Both were clearly new, had not been used.I only have two negative notes. On the cable which I use for my laptop (constantly plugging and unplugging), the clip that latches the cord into the Ethernet socket has broken off. This really doesn't hurt anything, but I can see it being an issue for some people. The other thing I noticed was that both cables were shipped in a envelope. Since neither were lined with anything, a misguided nail or screw could have harmed the cables. I was lucky and had no issue, but it's something to keep in mind when ordering.Overall I love the product and it works perfectly for my needs (going upstairs where my router's signal will simply not reach). I would not recommend using it for construction purposes however, not very durable. 5GReat cable.. great price.. cant ask for more great cable for me worked like a charm I plugged in my xbox and worked at full speed.. no more lagging from wireless.. price was great also that was the main reason I bought this cable was worried that it wouldn't be a good cable but worked out great..been using the cable for 3 years now still no problems even thought half of the cable is going outside from one window and going into other part of the house.. still works great.. 5Yes, it is Cat 5 and has twisted pairs I used this cable to wire a home network and therefore had to put new connectors on the ends of the cable. I found the cable to have twisted pairs unlike what others have found apparently. The cable inside is copper stranded. This means that each individual wire inside is made up of a couple dozen individual copper threads instead of a single copper wire. A previous reviewer attacked this as being nonstandard but the truth is that it's a common practice to have stranded wire to use in tight spaces because it's more flexible especially in applications like a networking cabinet with many short connections. If you are going to be putting new connectors on this cable just be sure you have the connector that is designed for stranded wire instead of solid wire. Stranded wire connectors are designed to pierce each individual wire straight up the middle and therefore make it's connection in the middle of the strand. Solid wire connectors will be designed to cut the sheath of each wire with something like a V-shape in order to make connection with the solid wire at the bottom of that V. I wired my home and found this cable to work great especially in one area where I had to go under the carpet. I was able to get it to lay very easily between the pad and the tack strip and I can't even tell it's there at all. 5THIS WAS NOT A CAT5 CABLE This product might have been updated to a CAT5 compliant product making my review no longer relevant.I base my belief on this review by member Lights On: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3ETVFUT5LRZED/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm and on her/his product imagine which shows a 1GB speeds being attained with this cable.Below is my ORIGINAL review for the product I received at that time (March 2011):The requirements for a CAT5 cable call for single twisted pair wires to cancel out electromagnetic interference : "Each of the four pairs in a Cat 5 cable has differing precise number of twists per metre based on prime numbers to minimize crosstalk between the pairs, on average 6 twists per 2 inches." (See Wikipedia)This product does not have twisted wires and that makes it, by definition, NOT a CAT5e cable, not even a CAT5.Since it's a patch cable, it does use stranded wires, which also means, as another reviewer observed, that you cannot cut it and put new connectors on it, since the flexibility of the wires make it hard to push it all the way in.On top of that, I don't think the wires are copper, since copper is not supposed to look silvery (see picture). But wait, it gets worse - I don't think it's 24 AWG cable either. Of course, since it's stranded it makes it a bit more difficult to measure it, but as far as I can tell, the diameter is closer to that of 26 AWG than 24. My caliper read 0.42 mm; 26AWG is 0.40mm, which is closer if you account for the stranded wires, while 24AWG is supposed to be 0.51mm.All these factors are bad enough by themselves, but if you add that to the length of the cable, it makes for an abysmal quality item.Out of the box this cable only connected at 100T speeds, gigabit connection was not possible. On the plus side, the wire is pretty flexible, which in theory should make for really good wiring around the house, but running untwisted cable over a 100ft is just asking for trouble. 2Just what i needed I needed this cord to wire my Xbox from my basement to the room on the floor above on the other side of the house. just bought a new computer that has wireless interent but for some reason my router gives off a weak signal to both my xbox and computer when ran wirelessly while my brothers lap top runs at full speed, when i ran the connection wired to either systems it runs great. So until i figure out the problem im using wired connections for both my computer and xbox. This cord is wayy too long for what i need it for but i wont complain, its exactly what i needed and for the price i wouldnt turn it down. The cord feels and looks well made. 5Fast Access wired internet connection I have used both a wireless connection and a wired connection for my desktop PC many times over the years. With a laptop a wireless connection is a slam dunk with a wireless router. However, using a Desktop PC things are a bit more tricky. I know, I know there are wireless adaptors for Desktop PCs but with a little effort and using the 100ft long ethernet cable I obtained from Amazon dot com I am very happy. No software to load or have to update using Windows XP professional nor signal strength issues. Just a fast, secure and problem free connection to our cable modem and viola!.......All is well. Thanks for reading this.Bill P.Conyers, Ga.USA 5Very good as long as you aren't plugging/unplugging the connector a lot. Very good with one minor exception. The 'living hinge' (of the latch which keeps the connector locked into the socket) fatigued after only a couple hundred removal cycles, so the little tab broke off. I use this cable to connect to my laptop, so it gets connected/disconnected a lot. I ended up having to use a digital switch, so that the broken tab connector stays plugged in all the time (and manually secured so it won't pull out), then used a shorter cable with a more durable connector from the digital switch to my laptop. 4Terrible cable - not even cat5 Just steer clear of these cables. I bought several of these cables as a relatively cheap way to wire some rooms in the house for Internet access. You get what you pay for.First of all, as another reviewer stated, this isn't even cat5 cable. None of the wire pairs are twisted. Wire pairs are twisted to reduce crosstalk. Twisted pairs are part of the cat5 spec. No twisted pairs = no cat5.Second, the wires are probably 26AWG, instead of the 22AWG or 24AWG required. That means that you can't cut the ends off these and expect to wire the cable to a wall jack. The wall jacks I use require a punch-down tool to push the wire into a couple of metal pins. The pins typically cut through the rubber sleeve on the wire and make contact with the wire itself. Since these wires are thinner than required, the rubber is never cut sufficiently, resulting in inconsistent contact.Third, the connectors on the end are just crap. They are small, so they move around in the RJ45 port on switches, routers, or computers. This causes any connection you might have to drop in and out. Also, the pins on the connector are smaller than on a known good cable connector. The pins are about half the width of a good cable, again resulting in bad connections.Fourth, the wires are not copper. Reading up on cheap cat5 cables, I see that copper-clad aluminum is being used in cheap wires. Copper is used in wires for a reason. It conducts the signal much better than other materials while still keeping a good price point. The copper-clad aluminum will pretty much rule out using these cables for gigabit ethernet connections. You'll be lucky to get 100Mbit connections.Luckily, I only ran a couple of these wires before discovering all of this, so I don't have to do too much work to rewire those rooms. The price on these cables was too good to be true and now I know why. Don't waste your money. Buy some better quality cables. You'll spend more up front, but you'll be happier in the end. 1DOA with gash in the rubber This would've been a fine cable but it arrived with a big gash through the rubber casing and it did not work when tested. After searching the cable we found the open area and located a spot on one of the wires where it had been sliced in half. I repaired the wire myself and closed the rubber with electrical tape but if you don't know how to do this kind of repair you would be stuck with a non working cable. Also, now it doesn't look very nice but luckily that does not matter for my application.Other than that is an OK cable. The rubber is supple (perhaps too soft to protect it!) and it works fine as long as none of your wires are sliced in half. If you receive a non damaged cable I'm sure it would be a good value at this price. 2
