He was really excited to use it. However, he ran into a problem right off the bat and there really isn't enough detail in the documentation or online to help an inexperienced person figure out what to do. With better documentation, I would have given it a higher rating. 3This is excellent!I had a great time with this kit teaching my grandson how to solder. He was delighted to find that his hands were steadier than mine, and that his project worked the first time. We had no problems with the foil lifting from the board that others mention. Likely that problem is technique-related.Unless there is a source for replacement tips, the iron itself may not be a lifetime item. The kit comes packed with one spare tip, and the tip's plating seems to only be good for a few hours of use. 5Decent beginners kitEasy to follow instructions to teach yourself how to solder. Iron its self works well, it's evident it's a beginners model. He likes it very much. 5Great learning kitBought this for my 10 YO for Christmas. He was really excited to try soldering. The instruction book is good - really helpful for someone who doesn't know how to solder. The solder it came with is pretty hard to use - from reading online, the general consensus is that all lead-free solders are difficult to work with. He also ran out of the solder that came with it before he finished the basic project. It also doesn't explain how to use some of the tools that are included.Overall, he's happy with it and it's been a great learning kit. Plan to buy extra/better solder. 4Five StarsVery good instructions and fun kit to build. 5I learned to solder, but now I am hesitant to buy the AM radio kit because I did not learn any theoryIt's okay, but maybe my answer is heavily biased because I am only starting with electronics. The iron works, but I cannot figure out how to change the tip. Nothing in the instructions about changing tips and youtube videos show that this iron has a different type of tip than most (I think).As far as learning to solder, the kit does good because you have to connect a variety of components on the printed circuit. However, this kit does not teach you anything about the theory of the actual multivibrator that you are making, just how to put it together. I looked through the description and it does not say that it will teach you theory, but come on; a paragraph on transistors and capacitors and etc. is not nearly enough for the electronics newcomer to understand it.I wanted to get into AM radio theory and Elenco seems to have a kit to make your own AM radio. The description for that says that it does teach 'basic theory of am radio operation.' I was thinking of buying that kit but now I am hesitant, if the 'teaching' is anything like this kit then I probably won't learn s*** and will have to resort to external means... 3
