Customer Reviews

Great buy for the money. Bought it. Like it a lot, especially for the money. No, it's not a $250 Veritas and appears to be a SOBA made in India and marketed by a few folks including Shop Fox and Woodstock. I followed a youtube video "SOBA (India) 3-in-1 shoulder plane tune-up and review" to tune it up out of the box and it is truly a very nice hand tool that shaves continuous thin ribbons.Gave it 4 stars only because of the work needed to tune it up. 4Arrived with cracked casting The title says it all. The casting was cracked above the mouth. This makes me wonder what quality of iron was used. I certainly don't want to own it. 1Good value if you want to spend the time. The first one I received had a defective lever cap. It was drilled very crooked. The second one was better, but still not great. I was able to compensate by filing the edge that touches the blade. Aside from the lever cap, the plane is well made. The bottom is flat and the sides are square. The blade is square, but the bottom was not flat. It took some time to flatten. Once I tuned it up, the plane worked great. So, for a bit of work and the hassle of a return (which Amazon makes easy), I ended up with a plane that meets my needs at about the third the cost of a Veritas or Lie Nielsen. If, however, you know you will make a lot of use of a shoulder plane, definitely pay the extra for a Veritas or Lie Nielsen. 3Extremely good for the money, if you tune it up a bit first. The finish is a bit rough on this, but man, does it do the job. Sharpen carefully and get the angles right. Cleaning out and perfecting rabbits in picture frames was a snap. 5Clean straight out the box Mine was very well machines out of the box. The blade was really good also but cleaned up better than I expected. The body while maybe rough where it doesn t matter is machined VERY WELL! Very happy with purchase. I will update if product fails 5but mostly because like any tool Seems to be machined well although careful adjustment always helps. I think I'll use the bull-nose or chisel form more than the full shoulder plane, but mostly because like any tool, it takes getting use to. The frog, blade, and adjustment mechanism are good, but probably reflect the reasonable price. Quite pleased with the purchase. 4Good value and decent quality! Good value in this shoulder plane and I've already had occasion to use it in all three configurations. I put a square on it first thing out of the box and it was good. 5Not as it appears The unit I received was a "shop fox" and not a "Woodstock". The size and basic design are the same, but the visual appearance of the unit received is "as machined" and not polished in any way. The small depressions on the side are absent. (This was purchased using my phone and I did not blow up the pictures to see "shop fox" laser marked on the side.)The unit was packed in a box that was about a 1/2" too small in length and width which was odd. The plane also has a distinct manufacturing oil smell to it. With some cleaning I'm sure that will go away.If I did not need this width for a particular project I have going on I'd return it and purchase something else, probably the Hock shoulder plane kit. 1Nice plane, but.. She Fox plane came in packaged well, covered in packaging oil of some sort that I had to clean off. I used Boeshield T-9 to protect body (it works on all my other steel - squares, etc.). I am new to woodworking (1.5 years) and this is the first "expensive" plane I purchased. I read other reviews of it coming in machined subpar but figured I would give it a shot. As you see in my pictures the machining is subpar, with a large nick in the body. It does not effect the performance as far as I am concerned and it shaves soft and hardwood very nicely right out of the box. The steel is sharp. The steel doesn't sit completely flush in the shoe (?), seems like a machining issue, but still it works nicely for me. It is very heavy and after cleaned looks pretty good, it feels very nice in the hand. It wasn't worth it for me to send it back although I showed my wife and she told me I should, especially when she knew I paid $75. Anyway, thought I would share the info, and confirm at least some are shipped with subpar machining. I know there are woodworkers out there that would not find the plane I received acceptable. 3arrived broken I knew that I would be buying a cheap Chinese tool and I was not wrong. The tool was poorly machined and, if that was the only issue, I would have kept it. However, the tool also arrived broken. I returned it and did not purchase a replacement.Don't fool yourself. If you want woodworking tools that you can use, find the money and buy tools from proven manufacturers. Preferably of American, Canadian, or European make. 1
