Customer Reviews

An extremely good crimper, a very good stripper, and an okay cutter for wires. It works pretty well. I guess I was hoping for a miracle tool (like some other reviews made it out to be), but what I got was a very good tool with some quirks. As I read in another review, the smaller the gauge the less effective this stripper is. It will still work, but it gets finicky even on 16 gauge. I also noticed that the cutter and stripper worked like magic on my copper chord, but had difficulties with my silver cables of the same gauge and using the same insulation. It still worked, but maybe not on the first try. What I would like to stress is that this is a very good tool, and definitely worth the ~$20. Temper your expectations, though. It will get the job done but might require some finesse. The cutter would rarely cut wires on the first attempt, but I already have a nice pair of cutters so that doesn't matter too much to me. The crimpers work very well.A NOTE: The easiest way to use the stripper is to hold it vertically and feed your wires at a downward angle from slightly above the stripper clamps. If you do it like that, the wires should rest firmly against the yellow measuring tool, and will usually strip on the first attempt. 4Struggles a bit with 10 gauge. Other than that, saves a lot of time and effort. I'm a Ham radio guy and am usually building a project that requires a lot of wire stripping. My 10 gauge stranded wire has a pretty tough jacket and these really aren't up to the task for that. I was able to strip this kind of wire 1 time, but it probably took 10 or so tries and I was unable to do it again. Instead of pulling the insulation off the wire, the 'cutting head / puller' glides over the top of the insulation, stretching it out a bit, but not able to penetrate the jacket. For wires smaller than 10, it works as expected and saves a ton of time. I've stripped 6pin mini din cables, cat 5 wire, speaker wire, solid core, and stranded, pretty much covering the entire range of gauges this tool is designed for. If you plan on stripping a bunch of 10 gauge multi strand, you'll want something else for that, likely a more traditional wire stripper. Happy with the purchase none the less, just don't buy it for the 1 wire size it cannot work well with. 4One of the worst tools I have ever purchased One of the worst tools I have ever purchased. Fails to correctly grip insulation and repeatedly fails to strip the wire, particularly for small gauge wire. I went out and purchased a classic pliers type wire stripper to finish my project. Unfortunately, I noticed too late that the "return window" had closed for my purchase. So now I'm stuck with this piece of junk. Save your money and obtain a classic stripper. 1Buy a better tool I ordered this based on some YouTube reviews and the reviews here at Amazon. I should have gone to the IRWIN tools website and read those reviews. This thing worked for the first ten wires of varying sizes within the 10 -24 gauge range. After that, I brought it to the jobsite to repair some electrical parts and run some longer wires and it didn't strip AT ALL. The teeth on the "grab" side of the wire don't have enough tension, no matter how much you adjust it so the wires just move around too much and the stripper side can't cut consistently. The wires are a jumbled mess after using this tool and are half-stripped, chewed up and totally unusable and have to be cut. I am honestly writing this review because I can't in good conscience recommend these as wire strippers I have been an aircraft electrician, avionics technician, and an electronics technician since 2003. It would have been nice to have such a dynamic tool at the ready which would have made my jobs a lot easier but it is too good to be true. I would recommend spending the extra money on a good set of Klein automatic strippers ($30+) or IDEAL custom strippers. The standard design of those I'm sure is made by other companies as well. Sorry IRWIN, this one is a flop. 1Amazing tool, can handle very large to (VERY VERY) small wires see my jpg for an example. This is my go-to wire stripper now. These wire cutters are simply awesome. This Christmas I received a few of these newer Irwin tools (linesman pliers and wire cutters). Then I saw this tool and used some gift card money to get it on the advice of a friend. I am very happy with this tool. Right after I got it I had a small computer wire break on me and I was struggling to strip the wire of the side I wanted to replace. I tried a couple times with my standard wire cutter (because I thought the wire was way too small to use this tool on) but I couldn't get a good strip because the wire was actually too small. Then I gave this tool a try, AMAZING! On the very first try I got an excellent strip of the wire and I was off and soldering in seconds. I have attached a picture of the wire size. As far as sturdiness of tools go this (as all of the new Irwin blue/yellow handle tools) is significant. It also has a neat feature of a sliding stop to help you get exactly the right depth of strip. I imagine this will work very well with larger guage wire. To strip my very small wire you can just turn it out of the way and it is easy to eyeball the length. It also has nice cutters and crimpers on the inside of the grips so this tool pretty much replaces every feature of my old wire stripper cutter with the exception of small pliers on the end of those (which I rarely use anyway). You will really enjoy using this tool I highly recommend it. 5she has made life so much better and knows just how to work it How do I begin this review about Tiffany.... she has made life so much better and knows just how to work it. I never had a quality stripper in my back of tricks all to myself. She does it just how you want it most of the time. Just like most strippers, if you don t clean her up after or use them in a rush, they act sloppy or make a mistake. So my tip is to make sure their mouth is clean and free of any left over nubs from the previous job. As a cutter, Tiffany does an ok but I call a pair of dikes, Pat, for the heavier jobs. I don t use Tiff to crimp since I have others for that but she can handle the task if needed. Bottom line, if you got a lot of wires and need a good stripper to help you out, Tiffany has your back. 5I've installed about 50 home automation smart switches since buying these First off, this is for the Irwin/Vice-Grip model 2078300 wire strippers. The same ones you can buy at the box stores for more money. This had a very high rating, which encouraged me to buy it. I've used it now for four days, and have decided it is a POS. (Piece Of sugar...) I watched several videos and they were all positive. I've done a lot of wiring, but these work about 80% of the time. If you are ok with that, buy them. But... be sure to make sure your wire is straight before you try to strip it. I've installed about 50 home automation smart switches since buying these, and our wiring is 24 years old. It doesn't work on some wires. It's like they don't cut enough of the insulator. And often times the wire is pulled past the grips. There is a little adjusting screw, but I think that is for a decoration or something. Now nobody pays me to say anything, but I did buy the Klein tools wire stripper to replace this POS. It's smaller, works 100% of the time, and feels like a real tool and not some Harbor Fright junk. I am totally happy with the Klein one, I only wish I had bought it sooner. The model I bought is Klein Tools 11063W. 2THE Wire Stripper If you do any kind of wiring, whether installing a ceiling light in your house or tinkering with tiny circuit boards, you need this. I had one for years, and finally managed to break it. Thinking I could do without, I used various cheap wire strippers until I finally couldn't take it any more, and then ordered a new one of these - or at least I thought I did. Look closely before you buy one. There's a very similar-looking product that claims to be "automatic," but it's not. Instead, it has a series of grooves for different wire sizes, so you have to know what size wire you're stripping, and fit it into the right groove. That one is a piece of junk. This tool is the one you want. The jaws on this one automatically adjust to the wire size, grip the insulation, cut just down to the wire, and then yank the insulation off, in one smooth motion. You don't need to know what size wire you have.In fact, you don't even need to see the wire. I just finished connecting a new light circuit, and part of the job required splicing some wiring in a very cramped space between some ductwork and the floor joists. I could either see the wires or fit my hands in to touch them - not both. Reaching in with this tool, I fed each wire into the jaws, felt that it was in the correct position, then squeezed the handles. When I pulled my hands out and took a look, there were my perfectly-stripped wires waiting to be spliced. 5Good for some Wire, Not for all I'm an apprentice electrician and I'm constantly making an effort to save time and save me for getting any kind of injury related to the nature of the job. Most electricians will tell you about about carpal tunnel being something you need to watch out for, due to the repetitive use of your tools to strip, twist and pull wire.About the tool. Once I received it I put it to the test right away "on the field", working on a renovation at a local hospital, I work with special wire and all sizes, from 22 to 00, obviously this tool it is only rated to # 10.Some of the features of the tool as the stripping gauge seem not very useful and after trying it for a couple of times I decided to just not use it.PROS:Stripping small wire was fast and it would work almost every time, even shielded wired 18-2 or 20-2, which I found very annoying dealing with regular strippers. It would take the tool no effort to get the outer jacket and then I could some times with a little adjustment strip both wires.Stripping #12 and #10 was a different story, it was a hit and miss.CONS;First I tried with some wire with the clear jacket, the tool will not do very well, it was almost like it wanted to strip the jacket first and not the insulation. I found this very annoying and will go back to my regular wire strippers. The tool also does not like small sections of wire, so if you are making "pig tails' the tool is basically useless.Compared to a regular wire stripper, this tool does not have a hole to make a wire loop or to cut bolts, like other wire strippers, so again you have to go back to your regular wire strippers to perform these tasks.I feel like this tool is aimed to the Data or Low Voltage electricians, not to the residential or commercial. It feels solid and well built but it does not work on all wires and you definitely have to keep your regular wire strippers on your pouch. 3The unit works well on larger wire, but presents ... The unit works well on larger wire, but presents issues when attempting to strip stranded wire 22 gauge and smaller. I took the unit apart to identify how it works. The lower grip plate on the left has an adjustment screw. I noticed that this screw offers no resistance until screwer in at least 1 1/2 turns. Then once apart I found a spring and a bullet shaped hardened pin. This pin adjusts how much pressure the stripping jaw applies to the wire.On thin stranded wire at the highest setting, screw all the way in, it does not offer enough pressure to strip the wire. I fixed this issue by taking a small 2/56 screw with a phillips head and cutting the thread length to approx 1/8 inch. This goes in the bore first with threads inside the spring and then the hardened bullet sits in the hole in the back plate bullet head in first. Once this is reassembled if you adjust the screw all the way in,you should not be able to complete a compression. This means the spring is completely compressed. To strip 26 gauge wire I would try 2 to 2 1/4 rotations in from completely out on the adjustment screw. I would also advise a small dab of lithium grease on the plate. This will reduce wear from the increased pressure when stripping thinner wires. I can now strip very thin wires and still use the tool for 12 gauge house wire as well. 4
