Customer Reviews

Not coarse enough It's a good plate, flat, durable, measures up to the good quality I've seen from DMT. But I got this for lapping hard sharpening stones, Norton India/Crystolon stones, Spyderco ceramics. And it works for that, just rather slowly. In retrospect I would've gotten the extra-extra coarse instead, or preferably saved up for a cast iron lapping plate for use with loose abrasive. 3An affordable flattening plate for your sharpening stones I use this plate primarily as a flattening tool for my other sharpening stones. In this regard it works very well. It is about a 220 grit plate, so for flattening it works best on stones over 500 grit. If you are planning on sharpening more stones in the 200-1000 range than the 1000-30000 range, consider getting the XXC plate instead, it will work faster for those.I find it easiest to place the plate in a bath of water maybe 1/2 inch deeper than the plate itself and then rub the stones on top. The water bath will keep the diamond grit on the plate from clogging with material. 5Uneven surface wearout This stone came out good but after flattening a couple of chisels and a plane iron, the surface has worn out rather unevenly. Half the plate is still quite rough but the remainder has gotten really smooth. As smooth as my coarse plate. I have other stones from DMT which do not display this behaviour. Sadly, I found this out only after the 30 day period so was unable to return this item. I did however try to contact DMT for a replacement but the customer service has yet to come back to me. It's been weeks. That's disappointing but then again it will probably cost me a new plate anyway to ship it back to DMT in the US from Malaysia. I would suggest to use the sand paper on glass method for flattening chisels and such. 2Short-lived This review is for the extra coarse stone. It was awesome for quick material removal the first 30 min or so of sharpening/lapping of plane blades but thereafter my 300 grit stone from another manufacturer removed material much more quickly. The DMT simply felt worn out and would barely produce any metallic slury. I always use diamond stones with water when sharpening and do not apply much downward force. Disappointed. 1Short life The other finer grain stones from DMT work well, but the extra course fell apart a few months after I bought it. I do not use much pressure on the stones, and since the other DMT stones I have seem to be fine, I suspect it is something about the extra-course that is not working.I only need the extra-coarse when I am fixing a chipped bevel (usually on a plane blade), so I fortunately do not this stone often, and I use one of my old coarse water stone instead. 2My personal opinion is that while it is a fantastic product, I do think it is quite overpriced EXTREMELY well made product, and heavy as heck. I use it to level out Japanese water stones to make sure they are perfectly flat before use. My personal opinion is that while it is a fantastic product, I do think it is quite overpriced...but I would buy it again. 5Highly recommended I bought my first dmt diamond sound a couple of years ago, and I have since phased out all of my old traditional stones. They are always flat, cut quickly, and leave a great edge. With the exception of a leather strop or the occasional polish on a translucent Arkansas, I don't use anything else anymore. I have five different dmt products, and I have had zero issues with quality control or longevity. 5a revelation to me I use three sharpening plates; the extra coarse, the fine and the extra fine. The extra coarse has quickly gone from too coarse to just right where I expect it to stay for a long time. About fifty years ago I was using oilstones. About forty years ago I switched to waterstones and they were a tremendous improvement. Recently I finally switched to diamond plates and I'm sorry I waited. They are a vast improvement over waterstones; far faster, much cleaner, and virtually no maintenance. The three DMT plates that I bought seemed virtually flawless. There is a very small bare spot on my fine stone, but it is of no practical consequence. I can't compare DMT quality to any other brand because I have tried no other, but I can say they are flat and effective and I hope they will be durable. Sharpening is no longer a chore, so now I keep my tools sharper than I did and of course that makes a tremendous difference in one's work. They are the best thing I've done for my woodworking in a long time. 5Almost a good review - Another with QC issues... I ordered the D8X extra course stone about 3 weeks ago to flatten water stones and as the first step in flattening chisel and plane iron backs. I use water stones for further refinement of backs. I use a Tormek for bevels. In use, the D8X cuts quite aggressively right out of the package and after several hours of use, gradually becomes less aggressive. I tested it dry, with water and with Simple Green and it worked well with each. Dry gives the best feedback, as you can actually hear and feel it cutting. Wet, there isn't much feedback to speak of however, it does continue to cut. The stone requires frequent cleaning. I found myself cleaning it about every 5 minutes, as the surface quickly becomes contaminated with swarf. The advantage to using Simple Green is that it works double duty as both a lubricant and a cleaning agent when rinsing the stone off in the shop sink. I use a plastic brush to gently agitate the simple green into the cutting surface, then rinse with water. It works very well.My generally positive review does take a bit of a turn at this point. My workflow for using waterstones involves rotating the stones after each pass across the face of the stone, similar to how you would flatten a board with hand planes. I find this aides in keeping the stones flat for a prolonged period and reduces the frequency of lapping. In use, I found that rotating the diamond stone in a similar way enhances its cutting ability. I use a pulling stroke across the stone which gradually after a dozen or so strokes becomes less and less affective at least in terms of feedback. Rotate the stone 90 degrees and the feedback returns. I rotate the stone four times then rinse and repeat. What this workflow exposed was an edge of the stone which was slightly proud of the rest of the nearly dead flat surface. Each time I passed over this edge of the stone, non uniform scratches would appear on the face of the chisel opposite the cutting edge. This raised edge also caused the chisel to lift slightly out of plane, rounding the face of the cutting edge ever so slightly. This is an unacceptable defect so, I have begun the exchange process. I will update this review once I have received the replacement and had a chance to use it. Sure seems like a lot of QC issues with these stones... 3A great diamond plate A great diamond plate. The course stone works very well for bringing nicked chisels back into shape. I have also used it on plane blades, re-flattening whetstones and for flattening up my own marking knife blanks. So far every use I have put to it, it has done well. 5
