Description

  • Offers a license-free monitoring service - This Dakota Alert MURS BS Kit includes a MURS Alert Transmitter and M538-BS Base Station. Both employ Multi-Use Radio Service and don't need an FCC license
  • Helps monitor your perimeter - The MURS Alert Transmitter (MAT) has a passive infrared (PIR) sensor that detects large animals, vehicles, and people who are 30~80 feet in front of the MAT
  • Provides 2-way conversation - The M538-BS Base Station operates as a transceiver. It can receive alarm signals from any MAT and transmit the message to another MURS radio
  • Operates range up to 2 miles - Even if the base station is 2 miles away (open line of sight) from the MURS Alert Transmitter, it can still pick up the signal
  • Readily expandable - Dakota Alert doesn't limit you in how many MURS Alert Transmitters you can pair with M538-BS Base Station. You can install one MAT in the drive and 3 inside the house

Customer Reviews

Worked great... for a while I have the remote unit about 250 ft from the base station on our TN property on a heavily wooded hillside. It has a strong signal and doesn't miss a car or person... or dear, raccoon, turkey, etc. Basically it picks up everything that walks in front of the motion detector. If you are on flat terrain and can get it high enough to pick up only vehicles and people you'll probably have no problem with unwanted alerts. My problem is entirely due to the slope and placement of my unit. I'm working on a fix but, in the mean time, we turn it off at night. We got it to alert us of daytime visitors anyway, so we're happy with it.(Updated Review 5/2/2014) Our first remote unit worked well for almost 2 years, then just died. We spent nearly $100 to replace the remote sensor. The second unit worked intermittently at best. Then, after another year, it died. We now have a Chamberlain CWA2000 system. It's too early to tell how reliable and durable it is, but so far I can say it is a better value, easier to set up and works better than the Dakota system - for a little more than half the money. 4The unit is to slow to pick up movment I had the lower powered units from Dakota and thought it was just to far from the house for me to get dependable alerts. So I up graded to the MURS stuff since they claim much greater range. Well it turns out it's not so much the range that was my problem, it is just PIR is slow to pick up movement. If something goes by quickly, (person walking at a normal pace) the unit just doesn't have enough time to see it. Now if you just move slowly across it's vision it will pick you up. Not very reliable system. Now if you don't need motion detection so much, go with the Dakota MURS probe system. I got one of those and it rocks! It hasn't missed vehicle yet. But you won't know if someone on foot is coming unless they have a lot of metal in their pockets. 2Awesome product, pair it with some walkietalkies for a great alert network! I paired this up with some Motorola RDM2020 walkie-talkies(MURS Frequency). They cross over and work together when set right! I was so pumped to get this to work. pretty easy, just match the frequencies. When I have a customer come in, the sensor box will blast a message saying which zone was tripped on the base station(if you use it, not required) and my Motorola walkie-talkies. Great for our mulch facility, incase im in the stock room or yard our back I get alearted a customer is in the Sales Room. I assume the other Dakota burial alert product would work awesome too as you could detect vehicles entering a storage yard or entrance. We will try those next. Awesome purchase!http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-RDM2020-Portable-Two-Way-Radio/dp/B00525ZT0Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417794943&sr=8-1&keywords=motorola+rdm2020We use this product inside, the product is weather tight, but seems fragile inside. I would not classify this as rugged for a harsh snowy winter climate. I would expect to get many years use out of this inside or a couple years outside being beaten up by the elements. When the unit starts giving false alerts replace the batteries... the unit is not broke! The batteries lasted 6 months with heavy traffic in a sales office for us. I would say 2500-4000 trips of the alarm in that time period. 5Not working well for me I have been trying it for about 4 days now. You have to be almost directly in front of it and will pickup a person walking about 35 feet max. The path it picks up very narrow - 10 feet or so. I put it in a bird house they sold me. New alkaline batteries and tried two sets to be sure. Some times it works...sometimes not. All idid was put batteries in and plug in the base. Does pickup police scanner calls once in awhile. I'll try a few more days..maybe place it more in line with the base unit. I really want this work as I have storage units and would put more around the perimeter. 1Needs major updating to 2019 standards The biggest thing about this product is it penetrates thru my double-sheeted steel building. Other than that, I see a lot of issues with it. The transceivers are humongous and very hard to hide on a fence line. There is a lot of wasted space inside them; they could easily be half the size. The bird house covers they offer are an absolute joke, so I made my own, that actually keep the water out. The receiver must have been designed by someone who's stuck in the 90's, as it has a 2.5mm audio-out, which caused me it's own set of headaches. The recording it plays when something triggers the motion sensor should be easily changeable to a ding, or even or your own recording. Lastly, in today's day of technology, this system should integrate a smartphone app, to alert you when motion has been detected. If my $70 Chinese doorbell can do it, this receiver definitely ought to. 2Amazing alarm system This makes you 2nd set. Our last set, we bought over 6 years ago, still works just added more. They work extremely well. Our furthest one is almost a quarter of a mile away from our house. Set up is super easy. You can select up to 4 different detectors even more if you don't mind hearing the same alert for more than 1 zone. Our old ones are in a male voice, the new ones are female. It was Alert Zone 1 or 2, 3 or 4. So ours are set up with 1 male and 1 female set to Alert Zone 1...they are set probably 100 yards apart, that way we know there really is someone coming in our driveway and not just a bird. Worth every penny. 5Seems to work as advertised, directions need help We have a driveway a half mile long (around 900 yards). I placed the transmission sensor unit in the wooden "bird house" made for it. The sensor is two feet off the ground on a fence post, 600 yards from the house in direct line, but the house is brick and it works...and it even works in the basement. The Base transceiver receives the signal with ease...sounding off with three verbal statements of: "Alert Zone 1" It picks up all automobiles, tractors, horses with riders, and even a herd of deer that decided to pass by. I plan to add a second sensor soon. The system allows for the addition of 4 sensors and their respective discrete zones. However, here is where the whole thing gets a bit murky. The instructions for the Alert PIR sensor transmitter were fairly on base, however the diagram of the dip switches and settings information inside the unit bore no resemblance to those in the instructions. I did find the Zone setting (1-4)on the processor board, but little else seems to correspond. The unit is preset to be Zone 1. Thank goodness it is pretty much plug and play for installation of one zone alert sensor. The transmitting PIR sensor required six AA batteries. Once they are in place and the unit warms up for a few seconds...it detects. The receiver, once it is plugged into an AC outlet receives....and those are good things. HOWEVER, if you have to change anything...it might be a problem. The instructions, as is so many times the case, are written either by someone who knows nothing about the operation of the units, or more likely, knows so much about them that they just can't lower themselves to user level. Don't know how long it will last, but after a week, it is doing fine...rain or shine. 4Great Range, Annoying Alert I live way out in the Boonies and I have a quarter mile driveway. I like to know when visitors arrive so I can get my pants on before they reach the door.I used to have a driveway alert called "Reporter" made by Chamberlain. It worked well enough but occasionally missed a car coming down the driveway. It barely had the range needed and I had to compromise on the placement of the transmitter. The MURS-based Dakota Alert system is a much better product. The range is outstanding and I can place the transmitter where I want. It's been completely reliable so far and hasn't missed any cars. I do get alerts on dogs and other animals as well. Unfortunately, there's no adjustment for sensitivity other than to move the unit further back.My only other complaint is the annoying repetitive voice announcement - "Alert zone one. Alert zone one. Alert zone one." No choice of alerts on this model. However, there is a set of connectors on the receiver that you can use to wire to a DC bell or buzzer. I plan to connect it to a standard doorbell and turn off the annoying verbal alert when I have time.Be sure you get this MURS-based device. They have a similar model with alert choices, but that model is not based on MURS and will not have the extended range of this model. 4MURS disappointing I love the product concept and the fact customer service is live people on the same land mass as me (US). I wish the product was of better quality and lasted longer than the warranty period+1 day. Quality control and production are disappointing as many units come defective from factory.Works OK but range is much less than advertised.Figure re-buying each device every year.Use Duracell or Energizer alkaline batteries only. Keep them fresh. A mothball inserted in case will keep insects out and seal the antenna base with silicone to keep moisture out of the antenna hole. Heat Shrink tubing will seal telescoping antenna sections from leaking moisture. Woodpeckers like to peck through the sensor membrane so a 1/2" hardware cloth screen will help. Any moisture inside of case will destroy circuit board. Despite best efforts, moisture WILL get in. I think a little increased QC and engineering would result in a much more dependable product, but they would not be able to sell all the replacements, Test regularly to find defective units before warranty period expires. 3Not very good on a number of levels. Customer service is great though. It didn't work out of the box. I talked to tech support a few times over a week or so and ended up sending it in to be checked/repaired. It came back in a week and seamed to be working fine. I went out to install them. I tried to put one about 1,200 feet away. The signal wasn't strong enough to be received inside the house by the base station. So I move it closer, about 150 yards away and that worked. BTW, the 1,200 away local did not have line of sight to the house. I could see the house but at the sensors level, the house was just behind the rise of a grassy knoll. It worked fine for a couple months. But instead of a low battery alert, the message just kinda starts dying out. Which is ok because it is the same annoying statement, "alert zone 1, alert zone 1, alert zone 1" 3 times in a row when tripped. Though they do allow you to change it to zone 2-6. After 2-3 months of use it was dead. I was surprised that it was so short after having specially bought the expensive energizer ultimate lithium batteries for it (6 AA). When I went to go change the batteries, upon opening the case, there was water inside it and the the batteries were corroded. I'm not sure where water was getting in but all the case was properly and securely latched shut. All in all I'm rather disappointed and recommend you look elsewhere. 2
