Customer Reviews

Good for the price, but not something I'd want to use every day. It does what it says, it measures angles. Pretty accurately too; it doesn't seem to drift or vary too much. My biggest problem with this thing is that the attachment/pivot is a circus. If I tighten the pivot so that it has some friction and I can find an angle and have it hold that angle, all it takes is a sideways glance and the pivot is loose and on the verge of falling off. Can't believe the pivot nut hasn't made a break for it yet. The sliding portion of the gauge is also a pretty low-quality steel, store it with the slotted portion in the body of the tool or it'll get bent. 3Easy to Read and Handy Features Exactly what I expected, this tool is accurate, makes setting proper angles for cuts. Love all the features on this gauge, especially the large numbers, makes it easy to read when you wear eyeglasses, Auto shutoff is valuable since I sometimes forget to turn digital gauges off. Also like the flip feature. Awesome little tool, in my humble opinion. As I make a lot of frames for painting and photographs, I find it easy to set the angle of cut, and then recheck it again after the cut to ensure the angle is turn. 5Not worth the money When the digital gauge worked it appears to have been accurate, though it was a bother to have to calibrate it every time I used it. Unit is cheaply made and a bit on the ugly side, but as long as it works, right?Well, the digital gauge died a couple months after I bought it. Started giving erroneous readings, wouldn't hold an angle, jumped all around. Thought it was a bad battery so I replaced it. Same results.I still use it like I would an old-fashioned bevel gauge, but I have to use a compass to set it if I need an exact angle. Wish I had just bought a regular bevel gauge to begin with.I definitely would not recommend this gauge. 2Plastic body, sloopy, inaccurate. The body is silver colored plastic to appear as if it's made of aluminum (and maybe was in an earlier version?), but it's cheap ABS plastic. Only the blade is metal (steel).Tons of slop and wildly inaccurate readings if it's not almost completely tightened down to the point where it's difficult to move.Even tightened down, I can wiggle/move the blade quite a bit before the readings show any deviation.Tightening it down enough to hold an angle well feels like it's going to stress/break the plastic. This is not a tool I expect will last long even in a home shop. The extremely thin-walled plastic body just isn't up to the task. The design really appears like it was engineered for the body to be made of aluminum, but some bean counter down the process changed it to plastic without re-engineering the body design. That's a huge mistake and it shows. 1Like Regular Square, W/ Double Check This is nearly exactly the same as every plastic body, steel blade adjustable square you might find anywhere. And like any of them, it's perfectly accurate enough for anything reasonable you'd build. You can't layout the taper in an aircraft wing, or the space shuttle mating bushing, but you could certainly transfer angles from stairs, out of square walls etc. Anything you'd do with a non readout square.I utilize the digital part to "Check my work". If I locate an angle on THIS part, then transfer the angle to THAT part, the readout gives me a quick verify to know the blade hasn't moved.I wouldn't try and expect too much accuracy by "Setting to reading", like setting the thing to 22-1/2 degrees and scribing that angle on the work. It's quite a long refresh time and the flexibility of the plastic body isn't going to let it narrow down to anything less than about a degree and a half. And that's typically fine for stairs, gates, shelves etc.I gave it 4 stars only because I'd really like to see an aluminum body instead of plastic. But that would likely take it out of this price point. Thanks - Lumpy 4Good T-Bevel, Poor Protractor As a t-bevel, it is of decent quality and works, as expected. I can easily transfer known angles with it, without issue. For that aspect, alone, it is five stars. However, as far as a digital protractor goes, it is only worth one star to me. To test out the accuracy of the protractor functionality, I zeroed on a known flat surface, and then compared against two known 90 degree angles - one being a carpenter's square and the other being my Jevon 3D squares. Both of them consistently were off within half a degree, either plus or minus. Each time I reset zero and remeasure the angle of the known surface, it would still read zero. I verified that the reference surface was truly flat, as well, by trying to insert a feeler gauge between the perpendicularly placed carpenter's square and the flat surface (a granite countertop) to confirm that there was no irregularities.I then set zero against both the carepenter's square and the 3D Square reflected the same 0 degrees. But, when I would go back to measure the angle of the flat surface, it would again be off. A little bit of math, and a half of a degree over the length of the blade would mean that there should be around .05" gap somewhere, should that be correct, on either the 0 degree or 90 degree measurement. On neither, could I manage to even fit a .0015 feeler gauge into either. 3Handy little device This is a neat little device for the price. If you want high accuracy you will find yourself chasing precise measurements because it is a little flimsy and the sliders are short on these types of gauges. You should expect +/- 0.5 deg or so repeatability. It's accurate enough for most measurements and it should function as a regular bevel gauge as well as any other in this price range. It does have a zero reference (one reviewer said it did not). The instructions are very clear and it is easy to zero. You can flip the display, flip the angle reading and save a reading as well. The controls are intuitive and it has a large easy to read display.I give this 4 stars because it is a bargain at this price. It does feel flimsy and delicate but that doesn't always mean it won't hold up well - time will tell... 4Sloppy design Ended up returning this one. The end could move a couple of degrees back and forth without the display changing.. 1Effective for use as a jig for non-standard angles, but easily loses calibration when measuring or setting an angle This is a potentially useful tool that can be set as a jig for non-standard angles (ones for which you don't have a fixed measure like a square). Unfortunately, it easily loses its angle measure as you rotate the blade and you need to zero it before every measure. To zero the device you lay it on a flat surface with the blade closed and press the zero button. If you then rotate the blade 180 degrees (carefully, since when the butt end re-enters the slot, the device tends to lose the angle), you will get some idea of accuracy (my readings doing this ranged from 179.7 to a perfect 180 - that indicates you can trust the readings within 0.5 degrees and is within the 0.3 degrees the manufacturer claims). When rotating the blade, the device is much too likely to lose the angle reading and you have to start over. This is particularly true if you pull the blade out while rotating, which you have to do to use the device as an angle jig. It helps to turn the knob enough to provide a little tension. There is a hold button for retaining a reading, useful since when turning down the knob the angle measure will probably get munged. For measuring an angle, multiple reads should be taken before believing the result and for an angle jig a small protractor should be used to get an approximate double check of the angle. This would be a great tool if it retained calibration once zeroed and if it didn't so easily lose the angle measure as the blade is rotated. 3Still some things to work out before it is a five-star tool. Seems to be accurate and repeatable. Appears well made and sturdy. That said, there are a couple of opportunities for improvement.First is the location of the buttons. The buttons are located right where thumbs and fingers end up while in use. This makes it all too easy to press the zero button while the blade is out of the base which then produces wild readings. Also too easy to hit the lock button and think that you are getting consistent readings when in fact the display is locked on a single value. Don't know if a cover could engineered to protect the buttons from accidental presses or if there is another solution.Second item is kind of a special case, but it created difficulty for my on my first use of the device. The geometry of the round (hinge) end can make it difficult to get a measurement when the components are in a tight spot. I am restoring a wooden drift boats and wanted to record the angles at the end of some ribs that I'll be replacing. Just could not get both the body and the blade tight against the ribs and sides and get the device tight to the apex of the corner.Overall a great step forward from a traditional sliding T-bevel for measuring and recording angles in most cases. But still some things to work out before it is a five-star tool. 4
