Customer Reviews

Great for Barbed Wire. Grabbed the barbs and never got stuck.I bought these in XXL a little over a year ago but finally got around to using them this past winter. I had to run 4 strands of barbed wire through woods on the back of my property. I think for everyday use that extra strip of leather would get in the way but for fencing they were great. I put up 4 barb barbed wire and would pull and tug the wire by hanging on to the barbs with these gloves. I never got stuck through the gloves. I could have used some arm guards though. Between barbed wire and briars I was scratched to pieces. But I like the gloves and would recommend them. 5Doubt They Would Last Long For FencingI just used these gloves (second time using them) to cut branches from several pine trees and then hauled them away. I was disappointed to see that my left hand glove had a tear between the thumb and forefinger. The right hand glove won't be long to follow. If these gloves were originally designed to do fencing work, I can't see them holding up very long. I'd like to send them back but they are used now. All the other leather gloves I have bought in the past have lasted a very long time. So it's a bummer to have these gloves fall apart so soon. 23rd pairI recently received a third pair of these Carhartt Fencer gloves. The first two came successively from my local tractor store. The ones I bought at the tractor store were far, far softer. The leather was very supple. They were quite a bit more expensive at twenty bucks, although I bought the second pair during a 25% off sale (fifteen bucks). Both lasted about a season and a half, maybe six months of light weekend use. I wish they were more durable, but they are comfortable and protective while allowing useful dexterity. I used them for heavy mechanic work (not spinning little sockets, but stuff like changing tires, installing control arms and axles, replacing shocks, coil springs, brake rotors, and steel bumpers) as well as for picking up scrap/litter/junk for the dump truck, besides regular yard work. The ones I got from Amazon were packaged differently and the leather is stiff as a board. I'm guessing they came from a different supplier in China but they're cut to the same specs. I hope they soften up because they're so stiff there's no dexterity with them. Instead of bending and following the curve of my fingers, they sort of fold like they were made with stiff cardboard instead of a soft fabric-like flex. 3Poor quality leather.Maybe it was just bad luck. Maybe this pair just happened to sneak past quality control. The pair that I purchased from Amazon was to replace a very useful pair I purchased from a retail store located near Peoria, Illinois while on a road trip. They were both Carhartt Fencers and the same size. The first pair served me extremely well for over two years, and I was only replacing them because a seam on one of the fingertips finally gave out. They seemed to be constructed of heavy leather and strong stitching. The pair purchased from Amazon was made from much lighter, softer leather. These gloves were put through the exact same type of work as the original pair, but began tearing at the seams of the palm within the first few days.I'm in the process of exchanging them with Amazon with the hopes of receiving a stronger pair this time around. 1Not to be used for installing fences! Before purchasing these gloves I read through the reviews and noted only a couple that were negative. Based on the majority of good I reviews I purchased the gloves for my husband who is currently installing fences. On the first day of using the gloves a hole developed between the thumb and the forefinger. On the next day, a tear developed along the wrist. By the third day a tear had developed along the side of the glove. It appears that the leather used for some areas of the gloves is thicker than others. In the areas like the palm and fingers the leather is thick while all the adjoining leather is so thin that it tears easily. My husband has tossed these so-called fencing gloves and reverted back to the welders gloves he was using before. They are bulky but he does not risk a hand injury while installing fences. My advice? Do not buy these gloves to install fencing or similar work as the gloves do not hold up. If you want a pair of gloves that make you look like a rancher these will do, but they will not endure working like a rancher. 1they look good, they seem strong but they have one major ...Received the gloves today. They fit okay, they look good, they seem strong but they have one major flaw. The thumb is super large. The length is okay, but the width is super large. And I always buy a size smaller, because I know leather gloves always stretch and I like my gloves tight so that they feel like a second skin. But the thumbs of these gloves are ridiculously too large. Might fit a "mutant" though? For that price and brand, the design should be better. 3Good gloves for weekend/occasional useThese gloves come pretty 'dry' and a little stiff. With a little leather oil, however--I used an ounce of Filson's boot oil--these gloves break in nicely and become much more usable and probably more durable. I've had them for over a year now and they have become by go-to for household and DIY chores, from gardening around cactus to carpentry, moving cinder blocks, pruning thorny trees and shrubs, etc. Waterproofed with the Filson oil, they have proven very handy for mounting tire chains for winter trips to the mountains. The tips of some of the fingers are finally wearing a little thin; would be nice to have reinforced patches there. But for weekend rather than daily use, at least, these have held up much better than similarly priced leather gloves I wore through from Home Depot. 4Depends Upon PriceLIKE: I use about four pairs a year (for the last decade), and buy several when the price occasionally decreases to around $12.00. They are a great deal at this price!DISLIKE: I agree with reviews that describe the declining construction and material quality, like weaker leather and thread, in recent years, the stitching tearing out, etc. Its as if these gloves are a "knockoff" or "replica" of what they were years ago. So, I definitely would not buy them at say, a $21.00 price, and think twice at buying them for around $16.00. 4Tough enough for thorns and wire. Leather failed before the stitching. My wife and I have been using these gloves for clearing out old barbed wire fence overgrown with blackberries and roses. The are tough enough that neither the wire or the thorns get through while we are working. We have tried a number of other brands but we find the stiches come out or the leather is not strong. They are comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time. I will say that after a few months the thumbs did start to wear thin and we had to buy replacements. However, because one right thumb and one left thumb wore out we are still using the pair that was created. 4Failed in first light duty use.Large tear in palm-side right forefinger upon first light duty use. I can't believe it. I bought two pairs of all leather gloves, this pair of Carhartt gloves for $15.99, and a pair of OZERO gloves for $9.99. The Carhardtt gloves failed right away. The OZERO gloves have smooth leather palms and fingers, and are much better quality and are holding up fine after several uses. 1
