Customer Reviews

CompassJust got my lensatic compass the other day. Product was packaged well and in good condition when I got it. Upon first inspection it isn't built to the quality of an authentic military compass but has the same look feel and function. The housing is made from what seems to be a cheap knock off pot metal that I am sure will not hold up to much use. The dial floats well but catches in a few places, the bearing marker is also very cheesy but functions. Overall for 4 bucks it might just do the trick till I give in and just spend the 80 bucks to get an authentic military grade lensatic compass. Consensus of product is... built for 4 and got 4 bucks worth of compass. 3Where's north?Junk=Compass worked when I checked it upon delivery but when I needed it today the needle won't move. with shipping it cost me about 8 bucks. If the compass worked it would be great, because it did work when I received it. I wish I never lost my Boy Scout compass. It was a round see through lucite compass that sat on a clear rectangular base. Great for plotting a course on a map. This will get you lost after walking ten miles away from the road.I guess no warantee or replacement policyI am also worried because I tapped it a few times to get it work and some of the liquid came out. I hope it was non toxic but it was greasy and smelled like kerosene. However there is no way to find out.I keep the pouch, best thing about the compass.I wanted to buy a good compass but I never saw this type before and bought it to see if it was worth buying a good one but since it couldn't even point to north I couldn't see if it was worth buying a quality one.I guess I should just always pay for quality instead of checking out a 5 dollar item to see if I like the design before you I the 60 dollar version. What was that fluid? 1High Expectations From Reviews - Product Fell ShortI looked for a solid compass for under $10 for sometime on Amazon and decided on this one because of the reviews. It was about $5 with free shipping, so I thought why not?The good:- housing of the compass seems sturdy enough for most users. This is NOT a military grade compass but better than a plastic one.The bad:Obviously for $5 it's not made by Apple. Some of the plastic parts seem like they could brake easily, but like I said for $5 why not purchase it. The compass does come in a OD green case with a belt loop. The Ugly:IT DOES NOT POINT NORTH! I thought it was me for a while, but when I put the compass on a flat service, North is pointed West? I tried it a few times and every time it points in the wrong direction. I wish there was a "reset" button so it could point North. I used my Grandpa's "expensive" compass to prove I wasn't turned around haha.Overall its a great paperweight. I'll be looking for another compass, nothing fancy, that can point north. 2You get what you pay for...I am a firm believer in shopping around and getting a good deal on something, so when I saw this compass, and read the reviews, I thought "sure, why not?"Well, after having just pulled it out of the package, and taking a good look at this, I can honestly tell you this thing was not even worth a "piece of crap" rating. The compass is horribly inaccurate, and the bezel does not hold position at all. I tried to gauge how far off it actually is, but can't even do that due to fact that tilting it even just a little bit throws off the reading. (something no compass should do)While the case may in fact be that I got the cheapest run of the lot, i still think the description of the product and the reviews are a complete joke.about the only good thing i can say about this compass, is that it makes a good paperweight.don't waste your money 1You get what you pay for?? s:The compass "works", but is constructed so poorly, it's little better than a toy.The oil-filled compass capsule is literally affixed inside the body with double sided foam tape. And mine is leaking. ):It seems like such a lost cause, i don;t know whether to try to fix it or return it.i got this because i've ALWAYS coveted the U.S. Military issue Tritium lensatic compass, but could never afford one. ;_; This is modeled after that design, and it CAN be used for orienteering, map navigation, landmark sighting, etc. It even comes with a cheap belt pouch that the don't list in the item description.Get one for your kids, or to learn introductory navigation, but DO NOT GET ONE TO INCLUDE IN ANY SURVIVAL KIT, or any serious camping, hunting, outdoor gear where your safety could depend on your ability to find your direction. 1Nice prop, decent toy, terrible compass. My daughter wanted a compass "like dad's" so I purchased this for her. It has the look of a military compass, but really does not function well as a compass at all. The bezel ring is loose and never really holds a click; the floating dial is unbalanced and even on a level surface does not balance out, it is almost impossible to read the bearing through the lense, and finally it seems to bind up easily and does not consistently point North. In the end, she is happy, it looks like dad's real compass and she can play army with it.As a compass it is a no-go. As a toy for the kid to play Army, it is OK, but would have been nice if it had actually worked as a compass to help teach her how a compass really works. 2PreparedIt was important to me that I have one of these so I'm prepared when out camping and fishing, I like to wander off. Thought about getting another as a present but wished it came with some basic orienteering instructions. Ill just have to get a book with too if I get one to give away.*UPDATE* This is not of the best quality, its not very accurate and if you are trying to traverse difficult terrain and have miles to go you will have an issue ending where you intend. It'll get you to the main area and give you basic directions, assuming you can't get basic directions from the sun and the stars. It would probably be a good idea to not skimp and get something that's built better, and that will last. 2It's junk. I expected it to be cheap and ...It's junk. I expected it to be cheap and last maybe a year, but wow!I bought this for my five-year-old to start him in learning navigation, and the engineer's compass I had as a kid is showing a frustrating amount of wear. If he lost or broke the new one, no big deal.Well, it would be OK for the task IF IT HAD A STATIC INDEX LINE. Folks, there is no static index line! Without a static index line for reference, most of the other features one might use a lensatic compass for are impossible to use.Look elsewhere. I think I paid $5 for this with free shipping and it's not even worth that without the index line.Josh SmithSmith-Sights LLC 1working compass but feels light and cheapI spent five years as an infantry officer and used a lensatic compass pretty often in training and occasionally in combat. This compass can perform most of the functions of the standard issue military lensatic compass, with the most obvious exception being this compass does not have any tritium night use capability. It does allow the user to get an azimuth with a fair degree of accuracy though. Notably, this compass feels light and flimsy compared to the military compass but considering it's about 1/6 the cost, I should have expected it. Bottomline, it works okay but it's definitely not rugged and I wouldn't trust it to last very long under field conditions. If you're looking for a toy compass for your kid who is playing Soldier and may want to learn some land navigation/orienteering, then this may be a good starter compass. If you're looking for a serious and reliable piece of equipment, spend the extra money and get the real thing. 3Would I put my life in this things hands noI made the purchase and then tried to cancel it after reading reviews further down but of course the cancel didn't work. I just knew I was going to end up with one of the ones that did not work. I was right. The little canvas case it comes in is worth the money but the compass is garbage and cannot make up it's mind. You are suppose to be able to hold the compass out in front of you and look at the needle and see your path at the same time. Well the needle just wonders all over the place. I tried to pitch the angle or lay it on a flat surface and no matter what I could not get a consistent north direction. I will try a 3 compass test to compare it with others but I can already tell you that the one I got just kind of meanders around aimlessly guessing I think north is this way. I would be better off looking for moss on trees. 2
