Customer Reviews

It works...most of the time. Not as easy to use as the red Light Keeper (for incandescent light strings), but if you follow the directions carefully, it does resurrect most of your defunct LED strings. I had seven or eight strings that didn't work at all, or only half the lights worked (you know what I mean). At first, try after try, I simply could not get it to work, so back to the instructions -- and VWAHLAH!!! There's a note to keep your hands well away from the part of the string you are testing, because your hands can provide enough conductivity to give faint, intermittent beeps...and you just can't find the bad bulb. Of course, it's natural for you to want to hold the string exactly in the wrong place, so you get very frustrated with inconsistent, intermittent, faint beeping. When I finally learned to keep my ham hands at least six inches away from where I was testing, suddenly the thing worked perfectly. I did have one string where I just could not find the fault...I think there may have been several bad bulbs or a broken wire. But all the rest are now working.Where the problem isn't a bad bulb, but a bad socket, you can cut out the faulty socket, and they give you a couple of "pods" you can use to jump the wires across the gap. SECRET: two pods don't last long. They'll gladly sell you more for about $2 a pod. Forget it. Use cheap screw-on wire nuts. The ones I had were a little to big to screw down tight, so I inserted a piece of toothpick into the hole in the nut, and it tightened them just dandy. 4Life Saver I honestly think this was a life saver. Anyone reading reviews before purchasing this product has to know that this requires patience at first. Once you get the hang of it, troubleshooting stringed LED light failures will be a breeze. Here is how i used it for my icicle led lights.1) Plug your light into a socket and identify a section where the lights don't work.2) Use the clamps to identify the section.3) Plug the light into the Repair tool's socket and pick a random section between the clamps4) I prefer to use the last led found on the icicle light as it is easy to isolate a single wire to do the testing.5) Once you position the wire and pull the trigger observe if any lights light up. If it doesnt find another spot to test within the section.6) If a portion of the LEDs do glow, then you move the clamps closer narrowing the section that doesnt work. Repeat steps 3-57) Once you are down to a single icicle and observe 2 or 3 that never lights up, you can bet one of those LEDs need replacing.I've repaired four 70 inches long in hour replacing around 10 micro LED lights. The first one took a good 20 to 30 minutes. 55 out of 5 stars, works awesome... Okay to start with I don't review very many things. I believe the problem people are having with this product is they're not pulling the trigger far enough to puncture the insulation. In a matter of 30 minutes I fixed over $100 worth of Christmas lights. It comes with directions that are very clear. I would definitely buy this product again, and I would have a friend buy it. 5it took more than four hours due to poor design and craftsmanship Overview: While the tool did manage to fix three strands out of 10, it took more than four hours due to poor design and craftsmanship. The bad: The trigger is way too stiff to use comfortably and after a while the metal piece that juts out to poke the wires started moving down. This resulted in me getting several false tests until I realized it had to be pushed back up. With strands with numerous defencies or lights out this is way too labor intensive to be worth it. Worse, it doesn't give off a red alarm when there is a frayed wire so I went through several strands only to realize they would never work again.Good: If you have a strand with only one or two lights that are out this tool may be helpful. 3works for net lights, too DH just "saved" 3 sets of LED net lights that had lost a section of lights. There's more trial & error than in tracking down the bad bulb in a string, as the lights in the nets were arranged with a logic that escaped us. We dealt with it by grabbing a silver metallic sharpie to mark the "good" lights as we went along. When you think you've identified the culprit, be sure to check both wires coming in/out of that light -- if it doesn't light up with either one, that's your bad boy. The "remover" tool at the end of this tool works great! But it could use some assist to hold the handles closed on the wire while you poke around, especially when working with net lights (like the doohicky that clicks into place to hold the nozzle of my garden hose in the "on" position. Squeezing the handles of the device so it pierces the wire takes a good bit of hand strength. The price seems high for what it is, but it quickly paid for itself -- I'm pretty sure there's no other way we could have identified the bad bulbs and saved these net lights, and replacements aren't cheap. 4Complete piece of junk I sent this back after two days. I watched the videos and followed instructions to the letter. I could not get it to work on my broken set so I tested on a strand I know that works and it would not light up the lights either. I also tested a working bulb in the bulb tester and again nothing. The only thing that worked was the fuse tester. Thank goodness for amazon refunds. Back to checking every bulb by hand like Clark Griswold! 1Amazing - and here are two photos to help you... Just repaired 8 strings of GE lights that I thought were goners. Some strings had a bad section, some strings only had a short good section. Looked like a nightmare, but wifey said, "Let's at least try that tool." Fair enough.Plug a set into an outlet.Mark the start point and end point of the section that won't light.Unplug from wall and plug into the tool. Now, let's say you identified a dark section of 30 lights.Go to the 15th light and squeeze the tester on the wire to that light. In most cases, either lights 1-15 will light, or lights 16 through 30 will light.Let's say lights 1-15 light up. Excellent. Now you KNOW that your naughty LED is hiding among lights 16-30.Time to test again. Where? Split the difference: which in this hypothetical scenario would be around light 23.Squeeze the tester on the wire going into light 23 and... the lights before it or the lights after it will light up!Aha. So your naughty light is hiding among the dark lights... and all you need to do is keep narrowing it down until you hit it.Sometimes you find it quickly, sometimes it takes a little longer. Some of the strings I fixed had 4 or 5 bad lights - which meant doing this process several times, each time on a different section. But I look at it this way: $30 for a tool that just saved me 8x$20=$160 worth of lights.NOTE!! What does a "GOOD" light look like vs a "BAD" light? The bad bulb often (not always) has a bad wire on it. To help give you and idea what I mean, take a look at the pictures: One of the wires has burned off of the bad LED. Compare that to the good LED in the other picture: two wires, both intact. Every once in a while (1 out of 15 in my case) you will find a bad LED that looks perfectly good. Fortunately, the tool has a little socket on it so you can test 'good looking' bulbs. 5Should be sold with ALL LED light strings What an outstanding product! It fulfills a pressing need if you have bought LED string lights.I was not aware that LED christmas light strings were still being wired in SERIES like the old nightmare style of incandescents which had tormented me for 15 Christmases. I switched to all LED last year and loved them. But, getting them out for this year over half of my strings didn't light completely.Searching the web, I found the LED Keeper. It is an excellent designed product which exactly performs as advertised. It is so rare to find just what you need and for it to totally meet its claims. And, thanks to Amazon prime, I had the product in two days. After it arrived, I quickly read the instructions and had 6 sets of lights working completely in less than 1/2 hour. 5Great Product! I really hate dealing with Christmas lights that don't work. I have thrown out many a string just to save myself the headache of trying to find the problem. This year I had a segment of an LED net light that stopped working after it was on a bush in front of the house. I decided to try this product to see if I could find the issue. I tried it first on a regular string of LED lights that I pulled a bulb out of and followed the instructions and it worked just as advertised. I figured the net lights would be a bit more complicated given the grid and all. It was. The trick for the net lights was figuring out the wiring pattern. It was basically just a zig-zag line. Once I figured that out, it was nothing to find the offending light. Once I found it, I tried trading it out for a light that I knew worked and...that did the trick...the previously bad segment worked and the previously good segment stopped working (because I put a bad bulb in it). I replaced the bulb and it works fine now.Since the net light was on the bush when I was doing all of this, I had to use an extension chord between the product and the plug on the lights. The addition of the extension chord did not hinder its use at all.All in all, it took me about 15 minutes to find the problem. But now that I know how the net lights work, I think the next time would take a small fraction of that. 5impressive tool, impressive customer service from the manufacturer. wow this thing is awesome and so is the company. i bought a string of 200 led christmas tree lights 3 years ago - they cost about $25 at the time. they worked great for 2 seasons then this being the third i plugged it in and about 30 bulbs in the middle of the string were dead. i did a google search on "how to repair LED x-mas lights" and found this - watched the video on how to use it on the manufacturer's site and then ordered from amazon. followed the instructions (the video is great), found the bad bulb, used one of the pods (my mine does not have removable bulbs) fixed the string in about 20 minutes. i also ordered extra pods and i am glad i did because i now i can fix this same string in the future. might get a few more years out of this one string of cheap chinese LED lights - and think about how many strings of LED lights you could go through in a lifetime if you didn't have this tool to keep them working. the company is saving thouands if not millions of strings of lights from ending up in our landfills. pretty impressive. one last thing - i was slightly confused at first when i opened it and started the video - i called the 800 number at 6pm on a weeknight (December 8th) and a super friendly man answered fast like he was just sitting in his livingroom taking calls - he clued me in quick and i went back to the video and successfully fixed my lights. buy it. a tool every home should have if you're using LED christmas lights. 5
