    The Patriots is an Eye Opener!The Patriots by Jean Alonso"The Patriots" is an eye opener! This is a powerful, personal story of what everyday life is like for folks working in a defense plant dominated by military culture. There is a prevailing mindset of keep your head down, don't rock the boat, don't complain about hazardous workplace conditions and above all don't talk to fellow workers. The individual voices of nine men and women who work at AMERICAN and who meet together with the author to discuss problems and grievances are vivid and moving. There is also relevant, fascinating material about the history of the labor movement, and the thinking of economists and religious leaders about workers rights. Towards the end of the book, I was heartened to learn that the former vets working in this defense plant were not only anti-war but spoke up strongly against the rampant "machismo" that often hurt women workers.Suzanne Hodes 5
