Description

The person addressed was a pale, sickly-looking child about nine years of age, who, on the deck of the vessel Windermere, was gazing intently towards the distant shores of old England, which were fast receding from view. Near her a fine-looking boy of fourteen was standing, and trying in vain to gain a look at the features so securely shaded from view by the gingham bonnet.

Customer Reviews

IndescribableThis is the most amazing book I have ever read! I never thought anything could beat the Little house series but I was wrong! This is sweet, romantic, adorable, beautiful, any good word in the dictionary. I could not put it down. Any time I had a chance I read it. It made me cry. This will be a book recommended by me to many many people. There are many more things to say about it, but I can't put all of them down. I am very sad it is over and will definitely be reading it again at some point in time!5an old fashioned storyThis is a story that would be appeal to young women who like to read and to others who just like a good clean story. The orphans in this book have a range of ages which is revealed as the story progresses. The main character, Mary, is especially sympathetic as she progresses from a poor orphan in a poor house to a servant in a widow's home to a young adult who has worked hard for her education.4Engrossing storyBeing such an old story I read it for the purpose of seeing how it would be written but soon found myself caught up in the story. Except for a few words that are now used differently, I could have been reading a recently written book.It is a female book as it relies a great deal on the relationships between people and the good guys coming out in front but I love this stuff. Most of the characters have good and bad traits except of course for the main heros/heroines.There is romance but not over the top it is more about the misfortunes, hardships and the overcoming of these hurdles.Great for those who like Catherine Cookson, Josephine Cox etc.5good bookMy favorite author is Charles Dickens, and Mary Jane Holmes writes in the same style. Only difference is it didn't take me so long to get in the mode of reading her than it does with Charles Dickens (if you read Charles Dickens you will understand what I mean). I very much liked this book and have now downloaded and read Tracy Park (slightly preferred The English Orphan but perhaps it was because it was the first). I plan on downloading more of her books. If you give her books a try I don't believe you will be disappointed.5Reminiscent of Charles Dickenson "Little Doritt".Great story! A story filled with all the emotions, all the details, all the struggles that keeps the reader involved and turning pages. I recommend this book and author for those who appreciate a clean, full story.5From the poor house, Mary is adopted by a kind ladyComing to America from England, First her husband, then Emma dies, leaving her children destitute. Daughter ,Emma is adopted by a rich lady, but Mary goes to the poor house, working like a slave. Mary's appearance is better after 2 teeth are pulled, and Mrs Mason adopts her and gives her a loving home. She goes to college and becomes graceful and a favorite of many, yet despised by Emma and rich girls who are jealous. She has not seen the wealthy and handsome George Moreland for many yrs., yet George appears on the scene and takes an interest in her. But will love ever come to Mary. One of best books l have read with so much happening and who will Mary fall in love.5Simply wonderful!I absolutely love this book! I am so glad I found it and wonder why I never heard of it before. It was just as exciting as my discovery of the Anne of Green Gables series and had a similar feel to it. The English Orphans was written around 1855 and is a classic rags to riches story. I was glued to my Kindle for two solid days and enjoyed the story and the characters immensely. I experienced both tears and laughter. Highly recommended!5I originally read this book when I was a little ...I originally read this book when I was a little girl. My stepmother had the original leather bound print. I was excited to find it on Kindle and quickly bought it to read again but as an adult. This is a charming story and compares well with titles such as Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. A must read for anyone who enjoys those books.5A little like a less witty, American Jane Austen novelI enjoyed this very much, and was surprised that I did. It was a nice slice of life from the 19th century which didn't concern itself with politics, the "Indian problem" or how technology was conquering the west. It was just a sweet story about young women in 19th century New England, and how a virtuous spirit bests shallow appearances. It was nicely written and sometimes a bit funny and wry. The characters are well drawn, likable, fairly believable and consistent.4She was the Victorian Jackie Collins! This has everything! Purple prose, improbable situations and deathbed confessions! You have to read it.5
