Description

An earth-conscious, yoga-practicing twenty-something is forced to face her estranged relationship with her mother in this comic yet poignant novel about moms and daughters.

Mia Rathbun is an overworked and underpaid Chicago social worker who belongs to PETA and recycles the tops of pizza boxes. Her boyfriend, Lars, is a free-spirited freelance writer (read: mooch) who disdains the conventions of marriage but is happy to build a life with Mia. That is until Mia becomes pregnant.

Left on her own, Mia just begins to accustom herself to the looming prospect of single parenthood when her mother, Babs, shows up to “help.” The two have an estranged relationship but are forced to acknowledge their connection as Mia’s belly grows and she has few other options. The story is told with Stuart’s characteristic irreverent and authentic humor with healthy doses of poignancy and grace.

Customer Reviews

A Fun ReadThis is not your typical Christian romance. These characters are sassy with a past, which makes them immediately real, likeable, and sounding a bit like people we might have in our own lives.Mia, our main character, has a great best friend, & a creep for a boyfriend. God is mentioned sparsely, but you get the feeling He's not far from their lives. No mention of Jesus Christ, salvation, or seeking God's will in one's life.I was able to identify with some of the situations & relationship foibles...doesn't everyone have a relative who's a bit ...umm...eccentric?An entertaining story, somewhat, with no overly religious flavor.3Almost perfect!I really loved this book. My only two complaints were these:The characters were almost caricatures at times in the story. Although I do think it is representative of how most of us in this generation go off to college and become PC, all of the characters could be just a bit over the top in their stereotypical representations. My other complaint would be that Ins, who is supposed to be very into everything natural, never even looked into ways of coping with a natural childbirth. I get that she was overwhelmed and putting it off, but if she were so mindful of everything she ate and so forth, I didn't find that part very believable. Those are two really minor things, though. This author is a great story teller and has a way with words. The pacing is perfect. It's funny. It was one of the better books I've read in a long time.5Babs Is At It AgainThis book is a tribute to single mothers. It deals with family, what makes up a family, and those we love. I think that the book was believable and dealt with many of the issues that single moms-to-be and single moms have to face. This is all done with good, clean humor. I believe many people will be able to relate to at least one character in this book. It's a good, easy read.I must admit that I first decided to read this book because it had my nickname, Babs, in it. You don't see that name very often. I am nothing like the character, however. I'm glad I read the book.4A great fun readI was expecting this book to be average and I questioned its Christianity by the beginning circumstances. But I found it to be riveting (up until 2:00am) and totally enjoyable. I enjoyed the realness of the church-goer being flawed and the newly redeemed one keeping some of her liberal views. I totally enjoyed this book and look forward to reading lots more of Kimberly Stuart's novels.5Very enjoyable; hard to put down"Stretch Marks" was a fun, light read, and very hard to put down. It was very down-to-earth and realistic, but not boring or mundane. I laughed at loud at some parts, and had a heavy heart during others. My only beef was with some of the continuity errors- namely, the gender of the baby IS mentioned, but everyone acts like it wasn't. (As in, the author mentioned it, but then went on her merry way like she hadn't.)I thought the ending was lame, but where does one end a book so true to life?5I immediately fell in love with her writingThis was my first foray into Ms. Stuart's books. I immediately fell in love with her writing. She's detailed but not flowery, Christian but not preachy, wholesome but not boring. I experienced laugh out loud moments and quiet introspection. I loved that the book wasn't completely predictable and not a "sanitized" novel like some Christian novels are. This is a great read if you enjoy good fiction but don't enjoy foul language and sexual situations.5Great read for mothers and daughtersThis book is sweet on several levels. I'm planning to share it with my daughter, who doesn't have children (yet), but who I saw over and over as I read about the protagonist--young tattooed, pierced, but "all natural" Mia. I cringed, but laughed, too, at the idea that she might see the cruise-ship recreation director Babs in me (I've become a perennial cruiser in my 50's). I giggled many times at the sharp and witty dialog. The plot was slow, but always moving forward. The characters were believable and likeable. Although it would've been satisfying to completely write off the boyfriend as a nogoodnick, never to be heard of again, I have to admit that the resolution of his relationship with Mia is more like real life. After reading two books by the same author on loan from the library, I didn't hesitate to purchase this one. I just wish that the author/publisher had elected to make this one lendable, as I'd love to introduce the author to others.4keep it up, Kimberly!Christians don't live in a perfect world, nor are we perfect people. We shouldn't require any different criteria from the characters in our novels. Kimberly Stuart creates stories that land us smack in the middle of someone else's messy life. Yes, we get to escape ours while we turn the pages of her books, but when it's all said and done, the hope that only comes from the Savior of the world is what we are left with. Sidenote: I don't love it when yoga and Oprah are validated in Christian fiction, because those young or weak in their faith are susceptible to the misdirected path they entail.5Light beach read.It was an easy read with no real depth. I was hoping by the subtle mentions of God through various characters that it was going there. It didn't. I wasn't a big fan of the main character, Mia, although I did enjoy her interaction with her mother - Babs. Now that I could relate to (don't worry Mom - not in a bad way!) She was just a quirky character that sometimes said inappropriate things, but added humor to the scenes she was in and wanted the best for her daughter. The writing was fine and it was a cute story, with decent characters that I could picture in my head throughout the story. Basically Mia, the non-marriage believing, all natural, vegetarian, social worker, ends up pregnant. The father fleas, leaving her with a cast of friends, neighbors, family, co-workers, and some strangers as her support system. She seemed annoyed most of the time and not appreciative for the things/people she did have. Who knows - her situation wasn't a good one - but she doesn't make for a good main character. Maybe that is what the author was going for - I just didn't care for it.But for a free, easy, quick, read, go for it, but I think I'm moving on to something with a little more depth! (We'll see - I am still at the beach!)3A delightful and honest look at quirky mother-daughter relationshipsMia and her mother, Babs, could not differ more. Mia dresses retro, cares about the energy crisis, goes to yoga religiously and lives a pure vegetarian lifestyle in Chicago. Her mother, while morally conservative, sports plastic surgery, works as a social director on a Caribbean cruise ship and is passionate about steak. They drive each other crazy! But when Mia gets pregnant, her live-in freeloader boyfriend jumps ship. Actually, he kinda slithers off into the night. Babs to the rescue. She drops everything and moves into Mia's apartment building to "help." Can anything can bring these opposites together? The promise of a new baby, one they both already adore, may be their only hope.Delightful characters fill this book! From Frankie, the librarian with technicolor hair (Mia's best friend), to Silas, the mysterious gentleman who lives downstairs, and Adam, the hottie who runs the local grocery store. Each contributes their own charm to the story.Consistent with the author's style, this book is subtly infused with inspiration. It is witty, intelligent and funny, all while being perfectly authentic -- the opposite of preachy. You'll love it -- I promise. And so does the publisher. If you don't like the book, you can send it to them under their "Good Read Guarantee!"Final Thoughts: Kimberly Stuart's books are like chocolate: take one bite and you'll need another. I can't get enough!4
